The first was described by Moschcowitz1in 1936. Additional single cases were reported by Mallory2in 1947, Jensen et al.3in 1950, and Frenkel and Groen4in 1954. In 1955 Mandelbaum and Bryk5described two instances in a series of 108 cases of chronic ulcerative colitis autopsied at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, over a 20-year period.
