Abstract

No criteria have been universally accepted for the classification of certain nonsporulating anaerobic bacteria which we call Bacterium necrophorum.1 Earlier work was concerned with their morphological, cultural and biochemical properties but not with their antigenic relationships until comparatively recent years.2,3'4'5,6 Studies of strains of Bact. necrophorum, isolated from cases of chronic ulcerative colitis, have shown the presence of specific antibodies in the serum of patients from whom they were isolated.7'8'9 There was evidence that certain of these strains were related serologically. In this investigation the problem of antigenic relationships among 12 strains, selected from different sources, was studied by means of agglutination and agglutinin absorption tests.
