The 4f-3d heteronuclear complex Co3Gd2(EDTA)11∙9·5H2O was synthesized by the "block" synthesis method using protonated ethylenediaminetetraacetate Co(II) and Gd(III) nitrate. The complex was fully characterized by means of elemental, thermal and X-ray structural analyses, as well as by the methods of diffuse reflection spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic system (space group C2) with lattice parameters a = 15.8142(3) Å, b = 14.5875(3) Å, c = 14.6808(3) Å, α = γ = 90°, β = 116.5009(10)°.The complex is a 2D coordination polymer in which each Gd(III) ion is connected to with three atoms Co(II) atoms through tridentate bridging carboxylate groups of EDTA, and each Co atom has two neighboring Gd(III) atoms. The polymer layers are packed in parallel, outer-sphere water molecules are located between the layers, forming a branched system of hydrogen bonds.
