Human Resource Empowerment Regarding the Operation of TPS 3R Assets

This article provides an overview of the empowerment of Human Resources that have TPS 3R Assets. Berat Kulon, Kemlagi District is one of the villages that has the potential for the best TPS 3R asset management in Mojokerto Regency, which was originally able to rise with the large amount of waste in the operation of Village Assets, namely TPS 3R. Precisely since the Corona pandemic in early 2020, there has been a spike in the amount of waste in this village which then resulted in piles of garbage everywhere, however, there are also small groups of residents who take advantage of this momentum to increase the economic income of residents around Berat Kulo Village, one of which is by managing waste into handicrafts in the form of bags, but this business did not have time to develop, after the pandemic, residents returned to sugar cane farming which has indeed been very much pursued by residents. The purpose of this service is to emphasize building awareness of empowering Human Resources (HR) through the operation of TPS 3R Assets. Utilizing the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the results of the community service are 1) Implementation of human resource empowerment for the operation of TPS 3R Assets and 2) Assistance in the operation of TPS 3R Assets through, a) Waste Management Education Seminar through TPS 3R, b) Implementation of the August 17th competition in the context of environmental cleanliness creativity, c) Procurement of garbage signs, and d) Procurement of garbage bins.

Effect of Flood on Poverty Status: Evidence from Sugar cane Farmers in Kwara State and Osun State of Nigeria

In Nigeria, sugarcane is a prominent crop and the primary crop used to produce sugar. However, floods have been a major tragedy that has troubled Nigeria's small-scale farmers. The bulk of rural poor people are these small-scale farmers, and as poverty rates have been rising over time, corrective action is required. This study was therefore carried out to assess the poverty status of sugar cane farming households (affected by flood, and unaffected by flood) in Kwara/Osun State of Nigeria. The study employed two-stage sampling technique to select 120 sugarcane farming households in the study area. Descriptive statistics, the Flood Loss Estimation, Logit Regression and Foster Greer Thorbecke (FGT) are the empirical analytical tools employed to analyze the data collected for the study. The results of the poverty index analysis revealed that 46 percent of the respondents are relatively poor, the poverty depth was 0.16 which implies that 16 percent were below the poverty line and the poverty severity was 0.07 which implies that 7 percent of the respondents were severely poor. Also, it revealed that flood shocks, gender, household size, household income, access to credit and membership to social organization were significant determinants of poverty. The study then came to the conclusion that many coping mechanisms people employ are corrosive because they have detrimental long-term implications on the sustainability of household subsistence. For future risk assessments and flood mitigation, the study advises using a holistic strategy and adept models. The remedies outlined in this paper would help the government, private sector, and sugar cane farmers economically.

Technical Efficiency of Sugar Cane Farming in PT PG Rajawali II Unit PG Sindanglaut

This research aims to determine the profitability and technical efficiency of sugarcane farming in PG Sindang Laut, Cirebon Regency, West Java. The research method used was survey research with 60 respondents of 30 plant cane and 30 ratoon cane. The data analysis used includes (1) descriptive analysis, (2) Cobb-Douglas production function with the SFA approach using Frontier 4.1, and (3) income analysis. The results of this research showed that, land area, seeds, phonska fertilizer, and labor affect sugar cane production in the plant cane category. On the other hand, land area, seeds, phonska fertilizer, and ZA fertilizer affect the technical efficiency of sugar cane farming of ratoon cane category. The factors that influence technical efficiency in the plant cane category are age, farming experience, and family responsibility. While education and farming experience influence technical efficiency in the ratoon cane category. The average income from sugarcane farming in the plant cane and ratoon cane categories is IDR 8,526,816/ha and IDR 13,195,410/ha.

Dynamics of land use and land cover changes in Amibara and Awash-fentale districts, Ethiopia

The analysis of land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes is crucial for rural development planning, food security monitoring, and natural resource conservation. This study focuses on detecting LULC changes in Amibara and Awash-Fentale districts from 1985 to 2021. We utilized five sets of Landsat data (Landsat 5 TM for 1985, 1995, 2002, and Landsat 8 OLI for 2015 & 2020) and applied supervised maximum likelihood classification. Accuracy assessments revealed overall accuracies ranging from 88.9% to 95.3% for Amibara and 89.5%–93.2% for Awash-Fentale. Both districts exhibited six main LULC classes: agriculture, bareland, built-up, mixed forest, shrubland, and water bodies. In Amibara LULC changes from 1985 to 2021 revealed significant shifts, maintaining its primary bareland characteristic, concentrated agriculture, and expanding Prosopis-dominated shrubland due to livestock-mediated seed dispersal. Conversely, in Awash-Fentale bareland dominance decreased from 92.28% to 67.02%, while agriculture, built-up areas, and shrubland expanded. Water bodies emerged between 2015 and 2021 which is associated with the construction of Kesem Kebena dam for sugar cane farm production. The net gains were observed in shrubland (12.9%), agriculture (5.8%), mixed forest (4.1%), water bodies (1.5%), and built-up areas (0.9%), with bareland experiencing a loss of 25.3%. In conclusion, Amibara and Awash-Fentale underwent both comparable and distinct LULC shifts, featuring prevalent bareland and central agriculture, alongside Prosopis-driven shrubland expansion due to livestock dispersal. While mixed forest exhibited fluctuations, built-up areas and water bodies remained limited. Notably, Awash-Fentale showed higher LULC variability. Understanding these land cover changes helps assess vulnerability to climate impacts like droughts and floods, enhancing climate resilience. Insights from this study can inform sustainable land-use planning, conservation strategies, and policy interventions in the Afar region and similar areas. These observations highlight the need for integrated land management approaches that balance socioeconomic development with environmental sustainability.

Pengaturan Akad Mukhabarah bil Mudharabah dalam Kerja Sama Pertanian Tebu di Indonesia Perspektif Epistemologi

The mukhabarah bil mudharabah contract originates from a combination of two contracts, namely the mukhabarah contract and the mudharabah contract which are combined into one in the sugar cane farming partnership model. The formation of this contract is a new thing that is used as an effort to increase national sugar production by forming fair cooperation based on sharia contracts, however, the concept related to mukhabarah bil mudharabah contracts has not been concretely accommodated in statutory regulations, so this research aims to examine the regulation of mukhabarah bil mudharabah contracts in sugar cane farming partnership based on an epistemogical perspective. The research method used is normative juridical with a statutory and conceptual approach. The theory used is stufenbau theory. The results of this research indicate that at the meta-norm and grundnorm level there is already a legal basis for regulation regarding mukhabarah bil mudharabah contracts. The legal basis for regulating these contracts is also found at the level of Staatsfundamentalnorm norms and the level of Staatsgrundgezets norms, namely in the basic state regulations contained in Article 29 paragraph (2) of the 1945 Constitution, but at the next level there are only regulations regarding mudharabah contracts, while the mukhabarah contract has not been specifically regulated in the statutory regulations or other regulations below it.

Analisis Faktor-faktor Produksi Usahatani Tebu di Desa Banyuputih Kecamatan Banyuputih Kabupaten Situbondo

The aim of this research is to identify factors that influence production in the sugar cane farming sector and evaluate the scale of production in sugar cane farming in Banyuputih Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo Regency. The data used involves primary information obtained directly from farmers, including variables such as name, age, education level, land area, amount of seed used, amount of fertilizer used, and number and type of workforce. Secondary data was also obtained from various agencies and institutions, including the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The research was carried out on all sugar cane farmers in Banyuputih Village, Banyuputih District, by selecting 30 respondents as samples using non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling technique. The data analysis method applied is the Cobb-Douglas production function model using SPSS software. The research results show that, based on the Cobb-Douglas production function analysis, it can be concluded that sugar cane farming in Banyuputih Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo Regency, is significantly influenced by the use of seeds, urea fertilizer, phonska fertilizer, and labor. Simultaneously, all observed variables have a significant influence on sugarcane production. Furthermore, the scale of production businesses in sugar cane farming in Banyuputih Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo Regency, was found to be in a condition of Increasing Return to Scale.

Evaluation of the Capacity of State Regulatory Agency to Revive Farming, a Policy Perspective of the Sugar directorate and Sugar cane farming in Kenya

This study investigated the capacity of the Sugar directorate the regulatory agency of Kenya’s sugar subsector to revive sugarcane farming in the country. It was based on a cross sectional survey design and purposive sampling techniques that enabled engagement of the regulators in management positions as key informants. Key informant guides and questionnaires were used to collect data which was then analyzed descriptively using measures of central tendency and inferentially using t-test. On the bases of the attributes of strength and exploitable opportunities for the directorate, the study established that the directorate has statistically significant capacity to revive sugar cane farming in Kenya. The key attributes of its strength as identified by the study range from the authority to license private mills, authority to set and review sugarcane prices, provision for adoption of COMESA Standards down to the authority to control sugar importation. The key attributes of exploitable opportunities range from the chance to seek for the intervention of the presidency in line with Articles 113 and 115 of the Kenya Constitution 2010, chance to intensify border and market surveillance services in line with the Agriculture and Food Authority Act of 2012, the chance to enhance stakeholder linkages and networks down to the chance to upscale its strategic plan in line with the Public Finance Management Act of 2023. According to the study, to revive sugar cane farming in Kenya the directorate should enhance its adherence to the attributes of strengths and develop strategies for exploitation of the identified opportunities.

Assimilating the Responsible Factors for the Technical Efficiency of Organic Brown Sugar Production: Stochastic Frontier Approach

The demand for organic brown sugar has shown significant growth in recent years, presenting an opportunity to enhance production by strategically leveraging existing expertise among stakeholders. The objective of this study was to assess the viability of producing brown sugar, with a particular focus on the technical efficiency of marginal cane farmers. This study investigates the technical efficiency of sugarcane farmers who are concurrently engaged in the production of organic brown sugar within a specific region in Bangladesh. The data collection process involved the use of purposive sampling, which resulted in the collection of 163 farm data sets from September to December 2021. Subsequently, a stochastic frontier production function was carefully employed to estimate the technical efficiency of the selected brown sugar producers. The findings of the current study demonstrate that less than half of the respondents (47.24%) were involved in activities linked to maintain a high efficiency level that was greater than 91 percent. It was discovered that a range of technical efficiency scores, which varied from 49.94 to 98.38 percent, with a mean value of 84.5%. There exists a significant potential for enhancing crop productivity by up to 15.5% with the implementation of improved agricultural management techniques like substantial experience, education, and training which tends to exhibit enhanced the efficiency of the production.

 This research aims to improve the productivity and environmental performance of sugarcane farming through sustainable enhancements. Utilizing the Cobb-Douglas method, factors influencing sugarcane farming management and green productivity are identified to reduce environmental impacts. The study highlights the significance of environmental aspects in the agricultural sector and proposes green productivity as a strategy to increase awareness and address land-related environmental concerns. The results show that by implementing green productivity practices, sugarcane productivity can be augmented, management costs reduced, and farmers' income increased, leading to a more sustainable and high-quality agricultural sector.

Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Brazilian Sugar Cane Ethanol Evaluated with the GREET Model Using Data Submitted to RenovaBio.

Brazil is the second-largest ethanol producer in the world, primarily using sugar cane as feedstock. To foster biofuel production, the Brazilian government implemented a national biofuel policy, known as RenovaBio, in which greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction credits are provided to biofuel producers based on the carbon intensities (CI) of the fuels they produce. In this study, we configured the GREET model to evaluate life cycle GHG emissions of Brazilian sugar cane ethanol, using data from 67 individual sugar cane mills submitted to RenovaBio in 2019/2020. The average CI per megajoule of sugar cane ethanol produced in Brazil for use in the U.S. was estimated to be 35.2 g of CO2 equivalent, a 62% reduction from U.S. petroleum gasoline blendstock without considering the impacts of land use change. The three major GHG sources were on-field N2O emissions (24.3%), sugar cane farming energy use (24.2%), and sugar cane ethanol transport (19.3%). With the probability density functions for key input parameters derived from individual mill data, we performed stochastic simulations with the GREET model to estimate the variations in sugar cane ethanol CI and confirmed that despite the larger variations in sugar cane ethanol CI, the fuel provided a robust GHG reduction benefit compared to gasoline blendstock.

Factors Influencing Biofuel Production in Western Kenya

Biofuel production is at the forefront of the agenda of many countries across the globe in the quest to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy access. The increase in oil prices and climate change have been the drivers to ensure the adoption of biofuels. With the global consumption of oil projected to increase, biofuel provides a viable option for a clean, affordable, and climate-friendly source of fuel. However, biofuel production is in Kenya faced with various challenges. Therefore, the study sought to assess the factors that influence biofuel production in Western Kenya. The qualitative research design was adopted with both primary and secondary data collected. Data collection was through interviews, focus group discussions, case studies, and a review of secondary data. The results established that there was a link between food security and biofuel production. Factors influencing the production of biofuel in Western Kenya included the lack of a specific national biofuel policy framework that promotes sustainable development and use of biofuels, limited research, insufficient feedstock to increase production, over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture to grow energy crops, inadequate technology and technical expertise and some knowledge among stakeholders regarding the need and importance of biofuel deployment across the country. There is need for alternative sustainable farming methods that can incorporate cane farming and food crop farming to ensure food security, better farming practices to increase the cane yield, and research on consumer attitudes and behaviours towards biofuels to promote the adoption of the technology.

PENGUKURAN PRODUKTIVITAS LANTAI PRODUKSI MENGGUNAKAN METODE OBJECTIVE MATRIX (OMAX) DAN FAULT TREE ANALISIS (FTA)

PT Madubaru Madukismo is a company engaged in the manufacture of granulated sugar. The problem faced by PT Madubaru Madukismo is that the company has not reached the set production target. It is known that the production target set by the company is 30,000 quintals per month. So for measuring productivity using the objective matrix (OMAX) and fault tree analysis (FTA) methods where the objective matrix (OMAX) is a partial productivity measurement system developed to monitor productivity in each part of the company with productivity criteria in accordance with the existence of that part, and fault tree analysis (FTA) is a method used to analyze the risk that causes a failure. There are five measurement ratio criteria, namely production efficiency productivity, raw material efficiency productivity, production target effectiveness productivity, machine work effectiveness productivity and number of employees productivity. Then the results obtained The highest productivity value achieved during measurements in the period May to October 2022 was in August with a productivity level of 864 and the lowest was achieved in May of 35, as well as an analysis of indicators from the calculation of the ratio 1 to 5, it can be seen that the lowest ratio is at the 3, namely the effectiveness of production targets and ratio 1, namely productivity, production efficiency. Based on the minimum cut-set, the basic events that can cause a low ratio 3 and 1 are the lack of suppliers from sugar cane farmers, workers' working hours are reduced because raw materials are late, production room temperature is hot, and does not match the jobdesk

Improving Farmers' Adaptive Coping in the Post-Covid 19 Period

The conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in feelings of anxiety, pressure, and stress on farmers. Anxiety about living during a pandemic can make farmers feel pressured; this can become a stressor for farmers. Community service activities are carried out to improve Farmers' Adaptive Coping in the Post-Covid 19 Period. Participants in this community service were sugar cane farmers, totaling 30 people. This farming community health education was carried out at the Gucialit Village Hall, Lumajang Regency. Counseling on improving Farmers' Adaptive Coping was conducted for 60 minutes using leaflets, x-banners, and banners as media. Submission of material to sugar cane farmers using the lecture method is carried out for 30 minutes, followed by discussion and question and answer for 30 minutes. The material delivered to sugar cane farmers is a Mental Health Media Kit from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. The health education evaluation results show that farmers can understand and carry out several activities to deal with stress. Health education to farmers about mental health is expected to continue to be carried out to improve farmers' adaptive coping in dealing with stress.

Cooperation and innovation under production risk: evidence from a lab-in-the-field experiment

PurposeThis study analyzes the role of cooperative behavior in facing the risk of encouraging innovative agricultural production projects by small-scale farmers in the context of farmers in developing countries.Design/methodology/approachA within-subjects field experiment was conducted with small-scale Colombian panela cane farmers. The authors used the collected data to run the regression analyses.FindingsThe results suggest that when small farmers can follow cooperative behavior by joining a group and pooling resources to face risk, they are more willing to invest in a novel and profitable alternative, albeit riskier. However, the possibility of cooperating with a group to invest in a novel production project depends on its expected risk level.Research limitations/implicationsThese results will help develop agricultural policies for sustainable development. Establishing informal networks for small-scale farmers to deal with unpredictable risks may aid in developing innovative systems.Social implicationsAgriculture is highly vulnerable to climatic impacts, which, combined with the inherent risk of innovation, may reduce small farmers' willingness to adopt innovation. Cooperation appears to be a mechanism for pooling resources and facing risk.Originality/valueResearch has focused on experimentally testing the effect of cooperative behavior when facing risk. The authors contribute to the literature by demonstrating the impact of the ability of small-scale farmers in rural areas to collectively manage risk on investment in innovative projects.

Determinant of Technical Efficiency of Sugarcane During the Covid 19 Pandemic in Malang Regency East Java Indonesia

Sugarcane farmers in sugar-producing countries are experiencing an economic crisis due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Restrictions on transportation and a scarcity of labor have delayed sugarcane harvesting, increased production costs, decreased productivity, and decreased income. Therefore, our research aims to measure the technical efficiency and the influence of environmental factors on the technical efficiency of sugar cane farming in Malang Regency. The results of the research using the multiple bootstrap regression approach show that the efficiency values based on the VRS and CRS assumptions are 0.854 and 0.834. This value means that sugarcane farmers in Malang Regency must reduce the use of inputs by 16.6% and 14.6% respectively to make sugarcane farming more efficient. The variable age of the head of household reduces technical efficiency, while the variables of sugarcane training experience, organizational experience, ratoon cane, and increases in input prices have the potential to increase technical efficiency. The Covid 19 pandemic has become a momentum for policy makers to create training programs that aim to utilize natural resources to overcome scarcity and rising input prices, as well as realize agricultural sustainability.

Factors Related to Farmers’ Acceptance of Improved Technologies: A Case Study of Small-scale Sugar Cane Farmers in Kakamega County, Kenya.

Improvement of agricultural technologies has been a global focus, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity for economic growth and improved livelihood. Through research, many agricultural technologies, loaded with potential benefits have been produced but their acceptance by the intended users has been a global challenge. This calls for need to develop effective mechanism to enhance technology acceptance so that their potential benefits may be realised. This study focused on these phenomena through establishment of various factors related to acceptance of improved sugar cane varieties among small-scale sugar cane farmers in Kakamega County. Understanding of these factors was critical, as it would pin point critical conditions that would facillitate wider acceptance of improved technologies by the targeted users. The study was built on Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT); and the theory of Diffusion of Innovations (DOI). A Cross-Sectional Survey research design was used. The target population was 137,355 sugar cane farmers from Kakamega County, from which a sample of 384 farmers was randomly selected. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square at 0.05 significance level. The study findings established significant relationships between gender, age, education, land ownership, experience in farming, source of income, sugar cane varietal attributes, variety choice, seed sources, availability of advisory services and marketing of sugar cane, with farmers’ acceptance of improved varieties. Addressing these factors is of great importance to technology developers and promoters as they would facilitate acceptance of the improved technologies produced by farmers. The study recommended extension service providers and sugar millers to provide farmers with adequate information on improved sugar cane varieties, required facilitating resources and supportive services in effort to enhance production of these varieties by farmers. The study has also contributed valuable information to the existing literature in agricultural extension.

Wetland vegetation regeneration in response to tidal reinstatement on an abandoned sugar cane farm

Supratidal wetlands are threatened by agricultural production and are highly vulnerable to climate change, particularly through sea level rise (SLR). While vegetation structure and composition of supratidal wetlands will likely change under projected SLR with run‐on effects for ecosystem service provision, these changes can provide opportunities for restoration of adjacent agricultural land. Here, we investigated the natural regenerative potential of supratidal wetlands on abandoned agricultural land in Southeast Queensland, Australia, specifically, responses of wetland vegetation communities to simulated SLR, through tidal reinstatement. In 15 years since crop abandonment, distinct communities of typical supratidal wetland vegetation have naturally reestablished, in predominately freshwater conditions, with minimal management intervention. Reinstating tidal floodwater increased the flooded extent and permanence of brackish water. Four repeat surveys of vegetation composition, structure, and condition were conducted in permanent plots established in Casuarina swamp, Melaleuca swamp, herbaceous marsh, and riparian zone vegetation communities, to observe change over time. Species richness decreased in all regenerating communities (Herbaceous marsh, Casuarina, and Melaleuca) post flood gate removal. Understory vegetation cover also decreased in Melaleuca and Casuarina plots, but increased in herbaceous marsh plots, with increased cover of salt‐tolerant species throughout. Changes in woody vegetation community and structure were not observed during this short study (2.5 years), although the regenerative capacity of woody and herbaceous species was reduced. Supratidal wetland vegetation communities can naturally reestablish in areas of abandoned agricultural land, however, increased saltwater flooding (likely with SLR) will put these communities at risk of transition to salt‐tolerant vegetation.
