Research on the Innovative Path of Campus Crisis Management Mode in Higher Vocational Colleges in Ethnic Areas

The occurrence of campus crisis in higher vocational colleges in ethnic areas seriously affects normal teaching and talent cultivation in schools. The article uses the bottom-up grounded theory for data collection and three-level coding through Nvivo11.0 software, and finds that there are problems such as the lack of management mechanism, inadequate safety education, short boards in the campus environment, and lagging teachers in campus crisis management, etc. Taking these problems as the starting point, it puts forward the innovative path of the campus crisis management mode of higher vocational colleges in the ethnic areas, and effectively improves the prevention and resolution ability of campus crisis events.

Crisis Event Handling Mechanism in Colleges and Universities based on 4R Theory

In recent years, worldwide, crisis events in colleges and universities have occurred frequently, affecting students' personal development, school stability and even social harmony. In China, as frontline workers, college counselors are an important part of dealing with campus crisis events. The paper explores the mechanism of 4R theory in dealing with crisis events in colleges and universities by analyzing the handling process of an acute psychiatric student case from the perspective of a college counselor in China.

Toward a campus crisis management system amid the pandemic and beyond

This study develops artifact and design principles for a campus-wide crisis management system amid the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Drawing upon crisis management literature and the uncertainty reduction theory, we develop a preliminary crisis management system with three fundamental components: dashboard, portal, and forum, geared toward aggregating environmental information, expert knowledge, and stakeholder insights. This immediate, integrated, and interactive campus crisis management system aims to promote organizational learning through knowledge acquisition, dissemination, and utilization while reducing stakeholders’ uncertainty about the crisis. Through comprehensive evaluation, we further synthesize and summarize new design principles for prospective artifacts, including constructing a distributed crisis management network, capitalizing on data mining and knowledge discovery algorithms, and developing the adaptability of the crisis management system in various circumstances.

Student Encounters with a Campus Crisis Pregnancy Centre: Choice, Reproductive Justice and Sexual and Reproductive Health Supports

In a mixed methods study, I investigated student experiences of an on-campus crisis pregnancy centre. Participants sought testing, counselling, and referral to abortion and instead encountered religious, anti-choice messages. Taking a reproductive justice approach to understanding student needs, I argue that the study’s findings underscore the imperative that campuses provide accessible sexual and reproductive health services while simultaneously limiting campus access to anti-choice organizations.

Global crisis management and higher education: Agency and coupling in the context of wicked COVID‐19 problems

Campus crisis management remains an understudied topic in the context of COVID‐affected higher education. In this paper, we contrasted the ability to tame the wicked problems brought by the pandemic of COVID‐19 in private and public universities in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, India, Kazakhstan, Uganda, and Ukraine. The cross‐country analysis and diversity of institutional types allowed us to consider a wide range of challenges faced by academic leaders and their institutions during the global pandemic. By drawing on institutional policy reviews and interviews with university administrators, we have examined tensions between the human and institutional agencies on these crisis‐stricken campuses given differing institutional coupling, sizes, resources, and missions. The focus on agential co‐dependencies and institutional coupling lays the ground for conceptualizing campus crisis management as a culturally specific construct in the context of higher education affected by the global pandemic.

Deepening crisis response: Addressing institutional trauma in student affairs and beyond

AbstractWhat does it mean for the community to really recover when the (campus) community is built upon systemic racism and other forms of domination? How would the response look differently if these factors and histories were taken into consideration? Responding to campus disasters involves more than merely returning to daily operations; communities are vital to recovery. This article posits institutional policies and (in)actions as facilitators of trauma within minoritized subpopulations of the broader campus community, and offers guidance for an equity‐minded approach to campus crisis management.

Assessing international students’ vulnerability to hurricanes: University of Florida case study

Disaster research concerning the behavior of international students at U.S. institutions of higher education is very limited. The main objective of our study is to develop new knowledge about international student's behavior at U.S. institutions of higher education in relation to hurricanes in order to enhance the overall campus crisis management. A mix of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to collect data from University of Florida (UF) main campus in Gainesville, Florida; UF administrative leaders committed to international students' safety in emergencies were interviewed. In addition, 120 international students at UF were surveyed. The data analysis sought to provide insights into one main research question: In a disaster-context, what challenges do international students face that contribute to their vulnerability at UF main campus? Three main groups of challenges were found; Institutional challenges, Students' well-being and daily challenges, and Disaster preparedness challenges. Moreover, considerable variations in students' behavior were found among some demographics, including gender, ethnicity, housing, degree level, and previous hurricane experience. The research findings shed a light on a research area that has been under-investigated, and contribute to an increased understanding of international students' vulnerabilities at U.S. institutions of higher education.

Responding to Campus Crisis: Equipping College Chaplains Through Theological Education

ABSTRACT Campus chaplains can provide essential support for students as they learn to navigate life in and through this pandemic. However, if chaplains are to successfully confront the oncoming mental health catastrophe on college campuses, theological educators must prepare and equip them to meet this moment. There are three primary tasks theological education must address in their formation of chaplains for higher education: (1) Chaplaincy concentrations and tracks must address the contextual needs for those entering higher education and must include a clear vision of their role as existential guides and public theologians. (2) Theological educators must critically examine the ways in which Christian hegemony and white supremacy continue to inform and shape the logic of theological education and work to dismantle barriers to access for diverse communities. (3) Theological schools must forge creative, interdisciplinary collaborations that leverage the research and best practices honed by scholars outside of theological education.

How and Why the Chicago Principles Came to Canada: Free Expression on Campus and the Closing of the “Campus Crisis Feedback Loop”

ABSTRACT Like the United States, Canada has experienced heightened concerns related to free expression on university campuses. In response, two Conservative provincial governments issued directives (in Ontario in 2018 and in Alberta in 2019) based on the Chicago Principles, compelling higher-education institutions to create explicit policy statements. Using a comparative and historical approach, I present an analytical framework for understanding the emergence of the directives. I argue that the successful California gubernatorial campaigning of Ronald Reagan created a “campus crisis feedback loop” that includes the mutually reinforcing phenomena of campus unrest, sensationalistic news coverage, overwhelmingly negative public opinion, and partisan opportunities to channel negative public opinion. The feedback loop subsequently became a pillar of conservative discourse and politics. The analysis demonstrates that while both countries experienced campus unrest, Canada has not traditionally responded with government intervention. Thus, the importation of the Chicago Principles led to a final closing of the feedback loop in Canada.

Evaluation of College Students’ Emergency Response Capability Based on Questionnaire-TOPSIS Innovative Algorithm

With the development of our society, the diversity of the university environment has been increased. The complexity of the diversified university environment also greatly increases the frequency of campus crisis incidents. Therefore, how to evaluate the emergency response ability of college students and how to take effective response measures have become problems that need urgent attentions. In this study, the evaluation of college students’ emergency response capability based on the questionnaire-TOPSIS innovative algorithm is conducted. Firstly, the questionnaire method is used to analyze the current situation of college students’ ability of emergency response, and then a comprehensive evaluation is made using the TOPSIS innovative algorithm. The results of the ranking of emergency response ability are as follows: excellent > good > undergraduate > graduate > inferior. Secondly, the reasons for the lack of ability of emergency response to students based on the evaluation results are studied intensively. Finally, the development countermeasures for college students’ emergency response ability training are put forward.

An Analysis of the Functions and Relationships of Multi-participants' in University Campus Crisis Governance: Based on Stakeholder Theory

Sorting out the stakeholders’ functions and interactive relationship is the foundation for building a multi-agent collaborative mechanism of the university Campus crisis. Under the analytical framework of “micro individual- medium organization- macro society”, this paper studies participating functions of micro individual stakeholders, such as students, teachers and managers, coordinating functions of medium organization stakeholders, like party-masses working departments, administrative departments, logistic departments, and collaborative functions of macro society stakeholders, i.e. government, business, and society. It analyzes the interactive relationship between the above three different levels of stakeholders. Reforming thoughts, such as forging shared prospects, building common value, improving interest mechanisms, enhancing trust relationships, deepening institutional reform, stimulating positive participation, are therefore put forward to achieve the goal of good multi-agent collaborative management of university campus crisis.

What’s at Stake: Evaluating a Run-Hide-Fight® Intervention Video through the Lens of Vested Interest Theory

The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have encouraged colleges and universities to create emergency preparedness interventions that prepare students, faculty, and staff for any conceivable campus crisis. In this investigation, we tested the efficacy of a professionally produced Run-Hide-Fight® video to accomplish such a goal with a convenience sample of college students. Drawing on Vested Interest Theory (VIT) to guide our evaluation, we observed significant gains in stake, salience, and self-efficacy for students exposed to the emergency preparedness video compared to those not exposed to the video. We find evidence not only for short-term gains immediately after message exposure but also persisting effects two weeks after exposure. In addition, greater perceptions of stake and salience in response to the video predicted more favorable attitudes toward emergency preparedness over time. These findings demonstrate the potential for brief messages shown in university classrooms to encourage students to feel vested in emergency preparedness on campus. They also shed light on promising messaging strategies to foster favorable attitudes toward emergency preparedness.

Expressive Freedom on Campus and the Conceptual Elasticity of Harm

AbstractHigh-profile controversies have created an impression that expressive freedom is imperilled on university campuses in North America. Analyses of this alleged campus crisis typically focus either on the negative psychosocial characteristics of those who oppose potentially harmful expression or on the cynical ways that expressive freedom can be invoked to normalize harmful expression. Conversely, I argue that theories of harm are key to understanding the contemporary discourse and politics of expressive freedom on campus. To shift the frame of analysis, I critically analyze three interrelated theoretical concepts that feature elastic conceptualizations of harm and are consequential for expressive limits in an academic environment: epistemic injustice, argumentational injustice and epistemic exploitation. I argue that all three concepts require a distinction between testimony and argumentation in order to better balance protection from harm, on the one hand, and expressive freedom and open inquiry, on the other.

Racism Lives Here: The University of Missouri’s Response to a Campus Crisis

ABSTRACTThe University of Missouri-Columbia faced a crisis situation during the 2015–2016 academic year after a series of racially charged incidents on campus. The University’s chancellor and University System’s president reacted to the crisis through various forms of communication. Image repair theory was utilized to examine these messages and the image repair strategies employed through them. Findings showed that at least one strategy from each of the five categories of image repair strategies was employed through these messages. The specific use of each image repair strategy used and seeming effectiveness are addressed.

Using Dialogue to Navigate Controversy, Civility, and Community.

Overlaying literature on facilitating dialogue and campus crisis management, this chapter introduces dialogue as an effective tool for both administrative and student leaders to engage during times of campus unrest, and offers implications for the work of leadership educators.

The rhetorical emergency kit: Engaging ethically with end the silence and protest rhetoric on a campus in crisis

This article offers a theoretically based solution to faculty hesitation to engage in difficult dialogs on a campus in crisis. Using the constructs of Ratcliffe’s language of rhetorical listening through the lens of Freire’s interactive educational framework from the stance of second-wave whiteness studies, this paper argues that instructors can engage in ethical discourse in situations of campus crisis such as vandalism, campus hate crime, instances of micro-aggressions, national tragedy, or other traumatic events. Drawing on a history of social justice in the classroom, the importance of listening, the necessity of reflection on whiteness, the self, and social inequity and immersive forms of social justice this article explores the theoretical constructs of rhetorical listening as a framework to create a safe space for students to voice their concerns in moments of unexpected upheaval. Beginning with unpacking conscious identity and dis-identity and illustrating how consciousness can allow for eavesdropping and lead to an exploration of accountability logic, this article illustrates an applicable method to assist students to understand and draw strength from social interdependency. Accepting that the classroom is a public space, and that the campus is a microcosm struggling with the civil liberties issues of our country, this article hopes to offer a practical rhetorical emergency kit for high school and college instructors to use across disciplines to support student voice and student listening and create safe classroom space in moments of crisis.

STUDENT PROTESTS IN UNIVERSITIES: EXPLORING THE MODEL FOR CRISIS MANAGEMENT, CRISIS LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING

With the increasing number of crisis events occurring in higher educational institutions, crisis management has attracted research attention. This article focuses on student protests that were widely experienced throughout the university campuses in Pakistan. By adapting a multiple case study and Zdriaski’s ‘Crisis Matrix’ as the conceptual and analytical framework, the researcher examines higher educational institutions real life experience with student’s protests.The purpose of this qualitative study was to report descriptions of challenges and strategies as narrated by leaders who had experienced campus crisis with complete reflections on their leadership competencies and strategies used. Additionally, after managing the crisis comprehensive list of leadership competencies required for organizational learning were explored. This study has value for practitioners when organizational learning is selected as an approach to organizational effectiveness specially during challenging times when learning is promoted at all levels and aligned with the overall strategic intent.

The Potential and Reality of New Refugees Entering German Higher Education: The Case of Berlin Institutions

By the close of 2015, roughly 890,000 new refugees had arrived in Germany, more than half fleeing the ongoing Syrian Civil War. While Germany had been accustomed to heavy migration streams since the end of the Second World War, the speed of the refugee influx was unexpected. Federal, state, and municipal governments and German civil society, including educational institutions, were largely unprepared and scrambled to respond. This article critically examines the efforts of three universities in Berlin to address the “refugee crisis,” with additional data from higher education experts at ministries, foundations, and institutes in Berlin and Bonn, Germany. The Campus Crisis Management framework developed by Zdziarski, Dunkel, and Rollo is used to critically investigate their response and its implications for Germany.

Analysis of the Present Situation of the University Campus Crisis Management in China

In recent years, the campus crisis events cause more attentions of Chinese scholars on the present situation of crisis management. Based on the concept of university campus crisis management, this article analyzed the security problems of the Chinese colleges and universities, and their current situations are discussed. It can be better to understand the Chinese research developments, and promote the further relevant research.
