The present study involves screening of phytoconstituents in the ethanolic extract of Mimusops elengi. L leaves. The total phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the same were determined. Mimusops elengi. L leaves were extracted with ethanol using Soxhlet apparatus. The total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. The antioxidant potential of the extract was evaluated by using 2, 2-diphenyl 1- picryl Hydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging assay and ferric reducing power (FRAP) assay. Antibacterial activity was assessed against four MTCC bacterial pathogenic strains by agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. Qualitative screening of phytochemicals justifies the presence of Saponins, Terpenoid, Cardiac glycosides, Flavonoids, Phenol, Steroids in ethanolic leaf extract. Total phenolic content was found to be 4.445±2.857 mg TAE/g DW (Dry weight) of leaf extract. Significant amount of DPPH free radical scavenging activity was found in leaf extract (IC50 value=45μg/ml) when compared to the reference butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) (IC50 value=59.41μg/ml). The plant extract exhibit good ferric ion reducing power but not as effective as standard FeSO4. The plant extract proved the good level of antibacterial activity against 4 test pathogens. Agar-well diffusion assay showed the inhibition zone of 17-24 mm. Minimum inhibitory concentration was found to be 6.25 μg/ml and 12.5 μg/ml against gram positive and gram negative bacteria respectively. This study reveals that Mimusops elengi leaves possess valuable bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic applications.
