We carried out the analysis of solid dental tissue among 50 patients at different stages of orthodontic treatment using brace systems made of materials, which are used most often in the process of bite correction. We determined the hygiene index (OHI-S), saliva buffer capacity and its immunoreactive properties, caries intensity to explain the development of demineralization. We conducted the study using ligature and self-ligating ceramic and metal brace systems. The examination revealed a clear tendency to imbalance in the local immune response of the body, deterioration of hygienic status in patients during the period of noted orthodontic treatment, as well as noticeable changes in the structure of solid tooth tissues. There is a noticeable development of pathological processes depending on the duration of treatment, and then a regressive effect in relation to hygienic deviations in tracking the retinal period. These studies have proved the pathogenetic effect of edgewise technology, mainly ligature representatives, on the general state of the oral cavity, including the body as a whole, which leads to the importance of the introduction of permanent preventive hygienic events and the implementation of treatment in conjunction with dental doctors of other directions.

Caries Risk Assessment in Adults Using the Cariogram.

This study identifies the caries risk in adult patients using the Swedish software product Cariogram. Early detection and timely management of risk factors for caries development are crucial for its prevention and non-operative preventative treatment. To identify patients at high risk for caries and implement a prophylactic program aimed at the individual patient based on the assessment of the individual risk factors. The study included 59 women and 41 men aged 19-65 years. Adetailed medical history wasobtained from all patients who underwent thorough clinical examination, evaluation of saliva with Saliva-Check Buffer (GC) test and of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus levels using the CRT Bacteria kit (Ivoclar Vivadent AG products), and assessment of the caries risk using the Cariogram software. The results showed that the most important risk factors were as follows: DMFT, (rs [100] = 0.358, p<0.001), levels of Lacto-bacilli (rs [100] = 0.321, p<0.001), levels of Streptococcus mutans (rs [100] = 0.302, p<0.05), plaque amount (rs [100] = 0.291, p<0.05), food intake frequency (rs [100] = 0.252, p<0.05), and diet content (rs [100] = 0.220, p<0.05). Insignificant correlation coefficients in risk assessment were shown by the application of fluorides (rs [100] = 0.114, p>0.05), saliva rate (rs [100] = 0.018, p>0.05), and saliva buffer capacity (rs [100] = 0.144, p>0.05). Cariogram is a very useful method in clinical practice for evaluation of the caries risk and its preventive, non-operative management.

Correlations between the properties of saliva and metabolic syndrome: A prospective observational study.

Saliva tests, which are easy to perform and non-invasive, can be used to monitor both oral disease (especially periodontal disease) and physical conditions, including metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, in the present study the associations between saliva test results and MetS were investigated based on medical health check-up data for a large population. In total, 1,888 and 2,296 individuals underwent medical check-ups for MetS and simultaneous saliva tests in 2017 and 2018, respectively. In the saliva tests, the buffer capacity of saliva, salivary pH, the salivary white blood cell count, the number of cariogenic bacteria in saliva, salivary occult blood, protein, and ammonia levels were tested using a commercially available kit. The relationships between the results of the saliva tests and MetS components were examined in cross-sectional and longitudinal multivariate analyses. Significant relationships were detected between salivary protein levels and serum HbA1c levels or blood pressure levels and between the buffer capacity of saliva and serum triglyceride levels. In addition, salivary pH was increased irreversibly by impaired renal function. This study suggested that saliva tests conducted during health check-ups of large populations might be a useful screening tool for periodontal disease and MetS/MetS components.

Effect of water aging on the anti-biofilm properties of glass ionomer cement containing fluoro-zinc-silicate fillers

A previous study has reported that a novel fluoro-zinc-silicate glass ionomer cement (Caredyne Restore) showed superior anti-biofilm effects by interfering with bacterial adhesion. However, the active ions may degrade with time. This study aimed to assess the valid anti-biofilm effects of Caredyne Restore after being aged by water immersion for 3 weeks. Streptococcus mutans biofilm was allowed to grow on the surface before and after water aging for 24 h using a modified Robbins device flow-cell system. The results showed water aging promoted biofilm formation. Insufficient amount of fluoride and zinc ions were released from Caredyne Restore after water aging under neutral pH condition. An acidic pH is needed to exert effective anti-biofilm properties. As the release of active ions from Caredyne Restore will gradually decrease after the restoration, the restoration may not prevent biofilm formation after 3 weeks while neutral pH is maintained by the buffering capacity of saliva.

Estimation of Proinflammatory Factors in the Saliva of Adult Patients with Cystic Fibrosis and Dental Caries.

Introduction: The available literature lacks data regarding the levels of resistin, lysozyme, lactoferrin, α-amylase activity, pH, and saliva buffer capacity, as well as oral health and hygiene in the group of adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of the research was to assess the selected saliva parameters in patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Materials and methods: Examined group was composed of 40 patients diagnosed with CF, while the control group of 40 healthy individuals. Both groups underwent the same scheme of the assessment (DMT index, salivary pH, buffer capacity, analysis of total sialic acid, total protein estimation, lysozyme levels estimation, lactofferin levels measurement, α-amylase activity, estimation of the levels of resistin and TNF-α). Results: In the examined group, there were higher values of decayed teeth as well as values of sialic acid, total protein, lactoferrin, α-amylase, and TNF-α. However, mean lysozyme, and resistin levels, as well as pH and buffer capacity of the saliva, were lower. Conclusions: New diagnostic methods, including the evaluation of selected salivary biochemical parameters, may indicate the existence of factors predisposing to severe tooth decay in the study group. Appropriate preventive treatment to combat dental caries in adult patients with CF will significantly improve their comfort and life expectancy.

The Oral Mucosa Status and the Correlation between the Functional Parameters and the Level of Nitric Oxide Metabolites in Saliva among Patients with GERD.

The study involved 91 patients (48 women and 43 men), aged from 18 to 70 years with GERD. All patients underwent the clinical dental examination according to a single scheme including general clinical manifestations (nausea, single vomiting, belching, heartburn, pain in the epigastrium and around the navel, and poor appetite) and dental manifestations of GERD. The objective assessment of the dental status of the examined patients included the measurement of the functional parameters of the mixed saliva, buffer capacity (BC) of saliva, and the detection of the nitric oxide metabolites (NOx) content in saliva from the right parotid salivary gland (“SRPSG”) and in blood serum using the indirect method based on the determination of the stable metabolites: nitrates and nitrites using the Griess reaction. It was established that salivation rate among patients with GERD with the prevailing of ACR and SACR was at the lower limit of normal values (0.32 + 0.19 ml/min), and the salivation rate among patients with the prevailing of SALCR was low (0.10 + 0.04 ml/min). The BC of saliva among patients with the prevailing of ACR and SACR was high (9.07 + 1.23 mmol eq/l and 9.40 + 1.71 mmol eq/l, respectively) and was reduced among patients with the prevailing of SALCR (7.63 + 0.18 mmol eq/l). The NOx level in SRPSG among patients with GERD was increased (especially in Group 3 (20.93 + 11.23 umol/l)). The direct correlation between the indicators of sialometry, the level of the BC of saliva, and the NOx level in SRPSG were established during the study.

The Effect of Cheese and Milk on Buffering Capacity of Saliva in Children 10-12 Years

Saliva have significant roles in maintaining the health of oral cavity. Salivary flow and composition of saliva play a critical role. Saliva also serves as buffer system. Increasing the salivary flow will increase salivary buffer capacity and pH of saliva. Salivary buffer capacity serves to protect the teeth from the acid that comes from food which is formed by acidogenic microorganisms. Milk and dairy are good diet for children that recommended by American Heart Association (AHA). Cheese as one of dairy mild can increase the salivary flow, that help keep the dental hygiene, and prevent bacteria sticking to the teeth. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of cheese and milk consumption on salivary buffer capacity of students aged 10-12 year at Sekolah Dasar Negeri 57 Banda Aceh. Salivary buffer capacity after consume cheese measured after chewing cheese 4 gram about 32 times whereas salivary buffer capacity after consume milk consumption was measured after gargling 25 ml milk 34 times. Salivary buffer capacity measured with Saliva-check buffer (GC). Results of Wilcoxon test showed significant differences (p&lt;0.05) salivary buffer capacity after consumption of milk compared with cheese. Capacity buffer salivary after consumption of cheese higher than milk. In conclusion, cheese and milk consumption have effect on salivary buffer capacity. Salivary buffer capacity after cheese consumption is higher than after milk consumption.

Association of dental and gingival health status with level of salivary characteristics and Streptococcus mutans in children

Background/purposeCaries and periodontal diseases are the most common oral diseases that lead to teeth loss. The aim of this study is to assess the association of combination of salivary characteristics, Streptococcus mutans levels and clinical parameters to the dental and gingival health statuses of children. Materials and methodsSaliva samples were collected from 89 children. Children were allocated to the low caries group (45 children: mean DMFT/dmft ≤ 2) or high caries group (44 children: mean DMFT/dmft ≥ 5) according to WHO method and criteria. Additionally, gingival health status was assessed as fair (gingival index and plaque index < 2) or bad (gingival index and plaque index ≥ 2). Each participant's resting saliva hydration (RSH), viscosity (RSV), pH (RSpH), stimulated saliva flow rate (SSFR), buffering capacity of saliva (BCSS) and level of S. mutans (SSM) were determined by chair side test kits. ResultsThe result showed statistically significant differences in all salivary characteristics and SSM levels for both types of dentition between the low and active caries groups as well as between fair and bad gingival health status (except for RSH for permanent teeth and RSH plus SSFR for primary teeth). Logistic regression showed that combination of plaque index (PI), RSH, RSV, RSpH and SSM provided accurate association (permanent teeth: 92.1%, primary teeth: 100%) of caries status and PI plus BCSS provided accurate association (permanent teeth: 92.1%, primary teeth: 93%) of gingival health status. ConclusionThis study has suggested that combination of salivary characteristics, PI and SSM levels could provide significant association of caries and gingival health statuses of children.

Salivary flow rates and buffer capacity and its relationship with oral health status: a cross-sectional study on crack-cocaine-addicted males

This cross-sectional study evaluated the saliva profile in crack-cocaine-addicted males and its relationship with dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral mucosal lesion (OML) using 148 adult male volunteers (37 addicted; 111 non-addicted) at the School of Dentistry, Federal University of Bahia. Data on decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT), periodontal disease and OML were collected from the clinical examination of the participants. Samples were analysed for the salivary flow rate (SFR) of unstimulated and wax-stimulated whole saliva and the saliva buffer capacity. Bivariate and regression analyses were conducted to assess the salivary profile and its association with the oral status of addicted participants (α = 0.05). The mean buffer capacity of stimulated saliva was significantly lower in the addicted participants (pH 5.2 ± 1.7) than in the non-addicted group (pH 5.8 ± 1.3, p = 0.03). In the addicted group, OML was associated with a stimulated SFR < 1.0 mL/min (OR = 11.98, 95% CI = 1.30-27.10, p = 0.04). The DMFT index and periodontal disease were not associated with the salivary profile, but with older age (OR = 7.20, 95% CI = 1.51-31.14, p = 0.01) and lower education levels (OR = 24.00, 95% CI = 1.68-341.00, p = 0.02), respectively. In conclusion, addiction was associated with the lower buffer capacity of stimulated saliva, and OML was associated with lower-stimulated salivary flow rate. Periodontal disease or DMFT was not associated with salivary factors in addicted males. Therapy approaches dealing with saliva status may be important for use with addicted males to reduce OMLs.

Association between salivary factors and cariogenic bacteria in type-2 diabetes patients

Type-2 diabetes (T2DM) is a global epidemic. Among various complications of T2DM, dental caries is one of its preventable complications. This investigation was aimed to study the association between salivary factors and the growth of cariogenic bacteria in the saliva of T2DM patients. We measured the salivary glucose, saliva flow rate and its buffering capacity in T2DM patients (N = 100). Cariogenic bacteria in saliva were detected by using a Chair-side Test Kit. We also analyzed fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in all the subjects. A large number of T2DM patients (78%) had high counts (>105 CFU /ml) of streptococcus mutans in their saliva whereas high counts of lactobacilli were observed only in 42% patients. We observed significant associations between streptococcus mutans load and saliva flow rate, saliva buffering capacity and glycemic control however these variable did not show any significant association with lactobacilli. Hypo-salivation, high salivary glucose and poor glycemic control promoted the growth of streptococcus mutans in the saliva of T2DM patients. In conclusion, salivary factors play important roles in controlling the salivary status of cariogenic bacteria. Thus, an adequate oral health and proper glycemic control could help in abolishing the caries risk and its complications.

The Effect of Radiotherapy for Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer on Oral Flora and Saliva.

Radiotherapy causes xerostomia in patients treated for head and neck cancer. This study investigated changes in quality and quantity of saliva after radiotherapy and possible associations between these changes and alterations in oral flora. The study was a prospective cohort study of patients receiving radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Suitable patients were recruited before treatment commenced, and informed consent was obtained. Patients were examined, and provided unstimulated and stimulated saliva samples. Quantity of saliva, buffering capacity and pH were measured. Oral flora was cultured from the saliva samples. Oral clearance of glucose and of lactose was measured. These interventions were repeated at intervals after radiotherapy had been completed. Eighteen patients were recruited. Stimulated and unstimulated saliva flow rates, glucose clearance, salivary pH and buffering capacity were significantly reduced after radiotherapy. Candida albicans counts were significantly increased. These increases were significantly correlated with reductions in stimulated and unstimulated salivary flow rates. Counts of lactobacilli, Streptococcus mutans and Bifidobacteriaceae increased, but not statistically significantly. Therapeutic radiotherapy significantly reduced the quality and quantity of saliva in head and neck cancer patients. These reductions were associated with increased C. albicans counts.

Influence of orthodontic treatment with removable devices in children on the properties of oral fluid

Relevance. The present article provides data regarding changes in the oral cavity during orthodontic tratment with custom-made removable appliances. Purpose. To study the condition of the oral cavity in children aged 7-12 with dentoalveolar abnormalities during treatment with removable orthodontic appliances.Materials and methods. 110 patients aged 7-12 were examined in Nakhodka, Russia. Group I – control (34 subjects) with no dentoalveolar pathology. Group II – children with dentoalveolar pathology (74 subjects), undergoing orthodontic treatment. Besides clinical examination the following laboratory tests were taken, namely: saliva viscosity, saliva PH, saliva buffer capacity, microcrystallography of saliva. Type III prevailed in 60% of cases. Results. Caries intensity during orthodontic treatment was detected to increase up to 8.32 ± 0.28 in comparison with control group 6.57 ± 0.22 (p &lt; 0.05). Hygiene rate decreased in experimental group to 2.8 ± 0.08, in comparison with controls – 1.40 ± 0.02 (p &lt; 0.05). Salivary PH decreased during orthodontic treatment. Microcrystallization type III of saliva prevailed in 60% of cases.Conclusions. The study revealed strong relationship between orthodonotic treatment with removable appliances and physicochemical properties of mixed saliva r = 0.95 (p &lt; 0.05). Appropriate approach and timely preventive measures can help correct oral condition in orthodontic treatment. Despite changes in oral fluid composition, esthetic and functional result of treatment with orthodontic customized removable appliances was high.

Effects of Chlorhexidine mouthwash on the oral microbiome

Following a single blind, cross-over and non-randomized design we investigated the effect of 7-day use of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash on the salivary microbiome as well as several saliva and plasma biomarkers in 36 healthy individuals. They rinsed their mouth (for 1 min) twice a day for seven days with a placebo mouthwash and then repeated this protocol with CHX mouthwash for a further seven days. Saliva and blood samples were taken at the end of each treatment to analyse the abundance and diversity of oral bacteria, and pH, lactate, glucose, nitrate and nitrite concentrations. CHX significantly increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and reduced the content of Bacteroidetes, TM7, SR1 and Fusobacteria. This shift was associated with a significant decrease in saliva pH and buffering capacity, accompanied by an increase in saliva lactate and glucose levels. Lower saliva and plasma nitrite concentrations were found after using CHX, followed by a trend of increased systolic blood pressure. Overall, this study demonstrates that mouthwash containing CHX is associated with a major shift in the salivary microbiome, leading to more acidic conditions and lower nitrite availability in healthy individuals.

Changes in the salivary electrolytic dynamic after sucrose exposure in children with Early Childhood Caries

This study sought to explore if the effect of 20% sucrose rinse (SR) on the salivary electrolytic concentration of calcium (Ca2+), phosphate (Pi) and fluoride (F−) in children with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is different from healthy children. Here, fifty-eight preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years were divided into 2 groups: caries-free (CF) and with ECC. Changes in saliva flow rate, pH and buffering capacity (BC), as well as in concentrations of Ca2+, Pi, and F−, and the degree of saturation in relation to hydroxyapatite (DSS HAp) and fluorapatite (DSS FAp) were evaluated. The pre-rinse [Ca2+] was higher in the ECC group in the CF group. A significant increase in [Ca2+] was demonstrated after SR in the CF group (p = 0.05). The [Pi] was reduced by 18% after SR in the ECC group (p = 0.007). The [F-] reduced in both groups after SR (p < 0.000). There was a moderate positive correlation between [Ca2+] and the DSS HAp and DSS FAp. Multivariate analysis showed that children with a higher [Ca2+] in pre-rinse saliva are more likely to have ECC. In conclusion, the effect of a 20% sucrose rinse on the electrolytic concentration of Ca2+, Pi and F- was different when children with ECC were compared with CF children.

Effect of hypertension on salivary pH, salivary flow and buffering capacity: An in-vivo study

Introduction: Hypertension is a highly prevalent cardiovascular disease, which affects over 1 billion people worldwide. Although more than 70% of hypertensive patients are aware of the disease, only 23.49% are treated, and fewer (20%) achieve control. Aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of hypertension on ph. of saliva, saliva flow rate and buffer capacity in individuals. Material and methods: The subjects were categorized into the following four groups: Group 1- normal blood pressure (SBP of . Results: The DBP and SSFR were significantly higher in men than women. USSFR was almost equal in both males and females. 57.7% of analyzed subjects comprised individuals with normal blood pressure, 12.3% of these subjects took antihypertensive medication. 17.3% of all subjects included individuals taking antihypertensive medication. Statistically significant difference was not observed for hypertension or intake of antihypertensive medication and unstimulated or stimulated salivary flow rate. However, a statistically significant difference was observed for the pH of unstimulated among the four groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, the contributory factors in maintaining the integrity of oral cavity is salivary flow rate, pH and the buffering action of the saliva. Effects of the fixed orthodontic therapy on biochemical and microbiological parameters of saliva

Introduction/Objective. Malocclusions are one of the most frequent disorders in dentistry, and pose a risk for the onset of caries and periodontal diseases. Fixed orthodontic treatment solves the problem of malocclusions; however, it requires simultaneous cooperation of the patients, parents, and dentists involved. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of fixed orthodontic therapy on the Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus spp. bacteria in saliva, the pH value, and buffering capacity of saliva. Methods. The research was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine in Foca, Department of Dentistry. The study included 100 respondents, aged 13 to 17 years. The respondents were divided into two groups: the study group (respondents wearing fixed braces) and the control group (respondents not subjected to fixed braces therapy). Saliva samples were taken from the respondents four, 12, and 18 weeks after the start of the orthodontic therapy. The study used the bacteria caries risk test (CRT) and CRT buffer (Ivoclar Vivadent). Results. The study showed an increased number of bacteria in saliva of the respondents during all three follow-up periods (?2 test, p = 0.001). The largest numbers of the Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus spp. bacteria were found in week 12 of the therapy. Saliva pH value and buffering capacity of saliva increased statistically significantly in week 12 of the therapy (?2 test, p = 0.001). Conclusion. Oral conditions in patients changed during the fixed orthodontic therapy: the number of bacteria increased, the pH value and buffering capacity of saliva changed. It was necessary to use preventive measures in order to avoid complications during the fixed orthodontic appliances therapy.

The importance of the time factor in changing the qualitative composition of plaque

Relevance . Whether it comes under microbial plaque to demineralization of enamel depends on the presence of cariesogenic bacteria that exhibit proteolytic activity in relation to the organic components of the interdigital spaces of enamel, easily digestible carbohydrates that enter the oral cavity when eating, the buffer capacity of saliva, capable of neutralizing the pH of plaque within an hour to neutral values after eating. On the knowledge of these factors is based the strategy of prevention of dental caries, based on nutrition management. Of all the above, the optimal factor of influence on the cariesogenic situation in the oral cavity is the time factor – the frequency of consumption of easily digestible carbohydrates during the day. Eating easily digestible carbohydrates that can be a nutrient medium for the oral microflora is recommended only during Breakfast, lunch and dinner, but not during snacks. Purpose . To determine the value of the time factor to change the qualitative composition of plaque. Materials and methods . In a series of clinical-anamnestic and clinical-laboratory studies studied the material-plaque obtained during the examination of 137 adult young people-students aged 18 to 20 years. Plaque sampling was performed immediately after the determination of its cariesogenicity by colometric method by J. L. Hardwick and E. B. Manlay, and after 60 minutes a clinical micrometer was used to determine the short-chain fatty acids in this plaque. Results. The proposed clinical micrometod for determination of short-chain fatty acids in dental plaque stated an increase in the optical density of smears in persons with high caries resistance with a decrease in the optical density in smears in the presence of a carious process in the oral cavity. The obtained data correlate well with the indicators of cariesogenicity in plaque, which increases with a decrease in the content of short-chain fatty acids. Therefore, the content of short-chain fatty acids and dental plaque caries require an individual approach to oral hygiene in different patients. Conclusion. Chair-side saliva diagnostic tests: An evaluation tool for xerostomia and caries risk assessment in children with type 1 diabetes

ObjectivesThe aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate how the level of metabolic control affects salivary function, xerostomia prevalence and incidence of caries, in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. MethodsFor the purpose of this study, a total of 150 children and adolescents (10–18 years old) were examined and allocated among 3 groups: 50 patients poorly-controlled (HbA1c≥7.5%), 50 well-controlled (HbA1c<7.5%) and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All subjects were examined for dental caries, oral hygiene and salivary factors. Assessments of salivary characteristics included self-reported xerostomia, quantification of resting and stimulated whole saliva flow rates, pH values, buffering capacity and saliva’s viscosity. A questionnaire and a chair-side saliva testing kit were used for the evaluation of salivary function. Caries incidence was recorded using DMFT index. Plaque index and gingival index were additionally evaluated. Data were analysed by Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests. ResultsHigher caries levels, higher prevalence of xerostomia and a decreased unstimulated salivary flow rate were recorded in poorly-controlled diabetics. The average caries indexes were DMFT(poor c) 3.6, DMFT(well c)1.2, DMFT(healthy) 1.5, p < 0.05). Salivary status and caries index were not found to be significantly different between well-controlled patients and healthy controls. ConclusionsThe results of this study indicated that chair-side salivary tests provide the practitioners with an easy-to use and quick method for the evaluation of salivary function and caries risk assessment in young patients with diabetes. Clinical significanceThe use of chair-side salivary tests provide the practitioners with an easy-to use and quick method for caries risk assessment and confirmation of clinical symptoms and signs in young patients with diabetes. They could be easily incorporated into daily office routine and may provide a useful tool for screening at risk patients and a simple way to communicate with the patients the need for further interventions for prevention.

Objective: Periodontal disease, caused by infection with gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, is the biggest risk factor for losing teeth in most westernized countries. Recently, periodontal disease has been regarded as complication of diabetes, since it develops frequently and progress rapidly in diabetic subject. However, although association between diabetes and minimal chronic inflammation induced by periodontal disease has been reported, association between differences in microbiota and periodontal diseases in diabetic subject have not been well examined. Research Design and Methods: Among participants of the population-based Iwaki study of Japanese held in 2016, those with information of oral cavity environment evaluated by the salivary multi-test, and microbiota of saliva samples evaluated using 16S rRNA sequencing were included in the study (n=1078). Diabetes: HbA1c levels ≧6.5% or FBG ≧126 mg/dl; normal glucose tolerance (NGT): HbA1c levels &amp;lt;6.0% or FBG &amp;lt;100 mg/dl. Results: The number of dental caries-causing bacterium was significantly higher (3.15±1.61 vs. 2.61±1.61, p &amp;lt;0.01), and the saliva buffer capacity was significantly lower (71.9±10.8 vs. 77.8±10.4, p &amp;lt;0.01) in diabetic subjects compared to those with NGT. Further, proportion of the phylum Firmicutes was higher (41.3±12.4% vs. 37.2±11.6%, p &amp;lt;0.01), and the phylum Bacteroidetes was significantly lower (18.9±8.5% vs. 20.9±8.3%, p=0.01) in diabetic subjects compared to those with NGT. Conclusions: Abnormal glucose tolerance may change oral microbiota, induce dental caries, and be a risk factor for periodontal disease.
