The interaction of methanol, dimethyl ether, diethyl ether and ethanoic acid with H-ZSM-5 and silicalite surfaces has been examined by determining the differential molar enthalpy and entropy of adsorption at 323.16 K. The results complement spectroscopic studies by providing further evidence for the formation of clusters around protonated adsorbed methanol molecules, and have confirmed the very strong interaction of both ethers with the zeolite Bronsted acid sites. Adsorption of ethanoic acid on the zeolite was strongly influenced by geometric restrictions on its possible orientation inside the pore system.
