Curcuma caesia Roxb. - Update of phytochemicals and pharmacological properties

Curcuma caesia Roxb. commonly known as ‘black turmeric’ is an erect rhizomatous herb characterized by bluish‑black rhizomes and leaves with a deep red-violet midrib. It is a native of northeast and central India and also found in Java and Myanmar. The plant is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of several metabolic disorders, leukoderma, leprosy, rheumatic complaints, bronchial disorders, menstrual disorders, gastrointestinal problems, neurological disorders, cancer and diabetes. The rhizomes contain 1.3-7.14% anthocyanins which determine its bluish black hue. 1,8-cineole, camphor, ar-turmerone, linalool, ocimene, ar-curcumene, zingiberol, curzerenone and tropolone were reported as the major components of rhizome oil from different geographical locations. The leaf oil is dominated by 1,8-cineole, camphor and borneol. Furanodienone and curzerenone were identified as the marker compounds for determining the quality of rhizomes. The present review is an update of its phytochemical constituents and pharmacological properties.

Quantitative assessment of paclitaxel in Taxus wallichiana zucc. bark using HPTLC densitometry: Insights for germplasm selection and toxicological studies

Taxus wallichiana Zucc. [Synonym: Taxus baccata subsp. Wallichiana (Zucc.) Pilg.] or Himalayan Yew belonging to the evergreen gymnosperm family Taxaceae, grows in temperate regions and has been used in traditional medicines to treat cancer, bronchial disorders, colds, cough, etc. The plant is known to contain paclitaxel (PTX), a key bioactive component with anticancer properties. High-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) was used in the present study to estimate paclitaxel from the bark of T. wallichiana obtained from 15 different geographical locations in the eastern and western Himalayas of India. HPTLC method was determined to be a reliable and efficient technique for the quantification of paclitaxel, offering rapid outcomes.The bark materials of T. wallichiana chemotype obtained from Sikkim (Samanden) contained the highest concentration of paclitaxel, followed by West Bengal (Sandakphu), Arunachal Pradesh (Dibang Valley), and respectively. The present study also examined the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the aqueous bark extract of the TW1 chemotype at various doses on the meristematic cells derived from the roots of Allium cepa L.. The bark extracts demonstrate considerable cytotoxic and mitotic properties. This study could be useful to the pharmaceutical industry for selecting elite (high paclitaxel-producing) chemotypes of T. wallichiana. The toxicological evaluation of the T. wallichiana chemotypes (using Allium cepa test) could also help to determine the genotoxic properties of the bark extract.

Evaluate the Work-Related Exposure of Vanadium on Scalp Hair Samples of Outdoor and Administrative Workers of Oil Drilling Field: Related Health Risks.

Petrochemical facilities, including oil well drilling, are discharging resources of extensive noxious waste into the environment. The workers in different sections might be exposed to vanadium (V) through different routes (groundwater and soil), which is linked with extensive physiological disorders, hypertension, respiratory disorders, anemia, skin, and gastrointestinal disorders. This study determined the contents of V in a biological sample (scalp hair) of workers of different categories (outdoor and office workers) in an oil drilling field in Sindh, Pakistan. The environmental samples, groundwater, bottled mineral water, and soil samples were also analyzed for V. For comparative purposes, the scalp hair of age-matched male subjects residing in domestic areas of Hyderabad city, Pakistan, was also analyzed. Generally, the concentrations of V in groundwater near the oil drilling field and drilled soil illustrated significant variations. The results show that the vanadium concentration in the scalp hair of non-exposed referents (controls) and office workers (exposed referents) was 62% and 45% lower than those observed for outdoor drilling and cleaning mud workers. It was observed that high exposure to V in outdoor workers might be linked with different physiological disorders such as anemia, eye problems, and bronchial disorders.

The establishment of a rapid propagation system of the petiole of Hedera helix as explants

Hedera helix is broadly distributed and cultivated globally. Hedera helix is very famous as a medicinal and ornamental plant. It is a traditional edible herb, which is beneficial to the treatment of various diseases and disorders, including cough, cold, reheumatoid arthritis and bronchial disorder. In this study, the petiole of Hedera helix was used as explants to study the effect of sodium hypochlorite disinfection time on explants, and the effects of different ratios of various plant growth regulators on callus induction and bud differentiation of explants were studied through orthogonal experiments. The optimal plant growth regulator ratio in rooting culture was also studied. The results showed that the explants were best sterilized with 2% sodium hypochlorite for 10 min. The best medium for callus induction was MS + 3.0 mg/L6-BA + 1.0 mg/L NAA + 0.1 mg/L2,4-D.The best bud differentiation medium was MS + 1.5 mg/L6-BA + 0.1 mg/L IBA + 0.5 mg/L TDZ. Significant results were achieved with rooting medium 1/2MS + 0.8 mg/L IBA. In conclusion, the objectives of the present investigation were to improve the disinfection procedure for petiole of Hedera helix explants using sterilization agents such as NaOCl with different time intervals. Moreover, the effects of different plant growth regulators on callus induction from petiole explants of Hedera helix were studied.

Portable electronic bronchoscopy for clinical application: a multi-institutional randomized instrument validation study.

ObjectiveElectronic bronchoscopy is routinely used for the diagnosis and treatment of lung and bronchial disorders. However, the devices used are normally large and costly. Here, we evaluated the clinical effectiveness of a portable electronic bronchoscope produced by Zhejiang UE Medical Corp., the UE-EB.MethodsWe conducted a multi-institutional, randomized, single-blind, non-inferiority and parallel-group controlled clinical trial. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 to the experimental group or control group. The primary indicator was the effectiveness of the device. Safety indicators were assessed from enrollment to 3 days after the operation.ResultsThe UE-EB had good consistency between groups during the procedure, and the effective rate was 100.00% in both groups. The difference value (95% confidence interval) between the two groups was 0.00% (−5.45%, 5.45%), and the lower limit was greater than −10% (negative non-inferiority margin). There was also no difference between the two groups in terms safety indicators.ConclusionsThe portable electronic bronchoscope described in this study showed reliable effectiveness and safety. This device is worth promoting and applying in clinical practice.Research registry number: ZXLB20200295 (Zhejiang Medical Products Administration, China).

Bronchial asthma in the genetic framework of cardiovascular continuum syntropy

Hypertension, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus are common comorbidities in patients with bronchial asthma. The causes for developing these diseases are multifactorial and involve inherited genetic factors. However, little is known about the genes contributing to the development of comorbidities in bronchial asthma and cardiovascular disease continuum.Objective. To examine the associations of genetic polymorphic variants potentially involved in the development of bronchial asthma comorbid with hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity.Material and Methods. Genotyping of 92 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in patients with bronchial asthma associated with cardiovascular/metabolic disorders (n = 162) compared with a control group of apparently healthy individuals (n = 153).Results. The development of bronchial asthma phenotypes comorbid with cardiovascular/metabolic disorders was associated with the particular genetic variants affecting the expression of genes including CAT, TLR4, ELF5, ABTB2, UTP25, TRAF3IP3, NFKB1, LOC105377347, C1orf74, IRF6, and others in the target organs of study disease profile. Only one SNP (rs11590807), which is regulatory for the UTP25, IRF6, TRAF3IP3, and RP1-28O10.1 genes, was associated with all studied comorbid phenotypes of bronchial asthma and diseases of cardiovascular continuum.Conclusion. The obtained results demonstrated that the identified SNPs affecting the expression of many genes may serve as potential biological markers of complex causal relationships between bronchial asthma and cardiometabolic disorders.

Anti-arthritic activity of the flavonoids fraction of ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.) standardized extract in adjuvant induced arthritis model in rats in relation to its metabolite profile using LC/MS.

Ivy leaves (Hedera helix) is a traditional plant used for common cold, cough, and bronchial disorders and can be used for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as an attempt in alternative medicine. RA is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by its increasing frequency and adverse consequences. There is an urgent need for a long-term therapy that has favorable biological effects and is less expensive than the already authorized synthetic medicines. This study aimed to determine the anti-arthritic potentials of Hedera helix with determination of the bioactive fraction and discovery of its second-generation metabolites by means of LC/MS. The total ivy ethanolic extract (TIE-E), saponins fraction (Sap-F) and flavonoids fraction (Flav-F) were investigated for their in-vitro anti-arthritic effects and in-vivo by Adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) using Complete Freund's Adjuvant (0.1mL, CFA) intradermal relative to the usual dose of ibuprofen (5mg/kg). We examined the physical alterations, rheumatoid biomarkers, cytokines that cause and inhibit inflammation, markers of oxidative stress, hyaluronidase and β-glucuronidase enzyme activity. Each paw's histopathology was also evaluated. The chemical profiles of TIE-E were studied using LC/MS in both positive and negative ionization modes. TIE-E (200mg/kg) and Flav-F (100mg/kg) significantly (P< 0.05) lowered the edema of the paws, serum immunological indicators, inflammatory cytokines, degenerative enzymes, and indicators of reactive oxygen species with increasing in the anti-inflammatory cytokines. Our findings suggest that extracts of ivy leaves might be used effectively to treat rheumatoid arthritis, where its flavonoid content is responsible for that, and it is able to repress biochemical, oxidative, and pathological changes associated with (AIA) Adjuvant-induced arthritis.

Features of treatment and rehabilitation of patients suffering from stable coronary heart disease with comorbid background at the outpatient stage

This literature review highlights the relevance of both cardiovascular diseases in general and coronary heart disease in particular. The features of the therapy of coronary heart disease and some comorbid conditions are considered: atrial fibrillation, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal tract diseases, bronchial patency disorders, iron deficiency anemia, inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, angle-closure glaucoma, new coronavirus infection COVID-19. Attention is drawn to the paradoxical relationship between cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular complications and death in patients with end – stage CKD. The effect of omeprazole on reflux-induced myocardial ischemia is described. The possibility of using cardioselective beta -blockers in patients with COPD is emphasized. The choice of the form of nitrate release in inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity requires special attention. An urgent problem is the interaction of antiviral drugs and drugs of basic therapy of coronary heart disease in patients with a new coronavirus infection COVID – 19. Thus, patients taking CYP3A4 inhibitors are recommended to use prasugrel. The article examines the effect of comorbidity on the severity of persistent loss of body functions. Attention is drawn to the existing problems of rehabilitation of patients with coronary heart disease at the outpatient stage: patients ignoring non – drug rehabilitation methods, insufficiently attentive attitude to the issue of full – fledged secondary prevention. It is necessary to further improve the algorithms for the tactics of management of comorbid patients with coronary heart disease at the outpatient stage and a more detailed solution to the issue of medical and labor expertise and rehabilitation of this category of patients.

Bronchial obstruction and resistance to hypoxia in elderly patients with COPD

Background. Age-related morphofunctional changes in the body lead to the development of arterial hypoxemia, tissue hypoxia and hypoxic changes. All this causes a decrease in the body’s resistance to hypoxia and contributes to the development of lung diseases, in particular, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the elderly. With the development of COPD in the elderly due to bronchial obstruction and disorders of pulmonary gas exchange, age-related hypoxic shifts, arterial hypoxemia, tissue hypoxia and resistance to hypoxia are further reduced. However, the relationship between bronchial obstruction and resistance to hypoxia in elderly patients with COPD has not been studied.&#x0D; Objective. To identify the relationship between bronchial patency and resistance to hypoxia in elderly patients with COPD.&#x0D; Materials and methods. The study included 30 patients with COPD in the elderly (60-74 years), I-II stage, without exacerbation, with a disease duration of 7 to 26 years, risk groups A and B. The type and severity of pulmonary ventilation were assessed indicators of spirometry and the curve “flow/volume” of forced exhalation on the device Spirobank (Mir, Italy). To determine the body’s resistance to hypoxia, a hypoxic test with 12 % oxygen content was performed for 12 min with monitoring of blood saturation using the automated software and hardware complex Hypotron (Ukraine).&#x0D; Results. Researches have shown that under hypoxic exposure, blood saturation in elderly patients with COPD is reduced, on average, by 18.23±0.26 %. This decrease in blood saturation can be regarded as severe arterial hypoxemia. At the same time, in elderly patients with COPD with an increase in bronchial patency disorders, the saturation shifts in hypoxia, on average, also increase. There was a significant correlation (r=0.50; p=0.006) of blood saturation shifts in hypoxia with bronchial obstruction.&#x0D; Conclusions. In elderly patients with COPD, resistance to hypoxia is determined by bronchial obstruction.

Anti‑inflammatory activity of 3,5,6,7,3',4'‑hexamethoxyflavone via repression of the NF‑κB and MAPK signaling pathways in LPS‑stimulated RAW264.7 cells.

Citrus peel has been used as a Traditional medicine in Asia to treat coughs, asthma and bronchial disorders. Therefore, the anti-inflammatory effects of 3,5,6,7,3′,4′-hexamethoxyflavone (quercetogetin, QUE) isolated from Citrus unshiu peel were investigated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The results showed that QUE repressed the production of prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide by suppressing LPS-induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase. It also suppressed the production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α cytokines, and decreased the nuclear translocation of NF-κB by interrupting the phosphorylation of NF-κB inhibitor α in macrophage cells. Based on the finding that QUE inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK protein expression in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, it was confirmed that inhibition of inflammatory responses by QUE was mediated via the ERK pathway. Therefore, this study suggests that QUE has strong anti-inflammatory effects, making it a promising compound for use as a therapeutic agent in treating inflammatory lung diseases, such as emphysema.

Synthesis and characterization of oxitropium bromide related substances and novel stability indicating HPLC methods

The European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) described two separate HPLC methods for determination of organic impurities in oxitropium bromide, a synthetic anticholinergic agent used by inhalation in the treatment of asthma and other bronchial disorders, and a potentiometric titration assay method which is not a stability indicating method. During synthetic process development and analytical studies of oxitropium; besides known Ph. Eur.-impurities new process related and degradation impurities were determined, identified by LC–MS, synthesized, characterized, and then used in development and validation studies of oxitropium analytical methods. As a result of these studies, a single HPLC related substances method was developed and validated according to international conference on harmonisation (ICH) guidelines for determination of all oxitropium related substances by using an inertsil ODS-4 (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) column at 15 °C with 50 μL injection volume at a wavelength of 210 nm with gradient elution of phosphate-buffer/acetonitrile mixture flowing at a rate of 1.2 mL/min during 60 min. Also, a stability indicating HPLC assay method was developed and validated by using an XBridge C18 (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 3.5 μm) column at 25 °C with 10 μL injection volume at a wavelength of 210 nm and with phosphate-buffer/acetonitrile (85/15) mixture flowing at a rate of 1.0 mL/min during 10 min. Stress-testing and stability studies of oxitropium bromide was carried out and samples were analyzed by using newly developed stability-indicating HPLC assay and related substances methods.

Phytal proteins of jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus lam.) and their immuno-compatibility assessment with indoor fungal antigens and human antibody

Several phytal extracts in Ayurveda are used in controlling certain allergies and bronchial disorders. In present study, the suspected anti-allergic activity of a tropical perennial tree, jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam), roots were evaluated against allergens that cause bronchial allergy/asthma. The chemical composition of phytal extracts indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phytosterols, etc. with suspected anti-allergic capabilities. The binding capabilities between extracts, indoor fungal antigens and human antibodies (IgE) based on different immunoassays indicated that jackfruit root protein of 75 kDa can be considered as possible and novel treatment option for common respiratory allergies.

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE)-like finding on CT in daily practice ―prevalence and serial changes

ObjectiveTo characterize the prevalence of PPFE (pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis)-like finding on CT in daily practice and to identify the risk factors for its progression. Matelials & methods2416 consecutive daily CT examinations were screened for PPFE-like finding. CT images with PPFE-like finding were retrospectively reviewed for the extent, maximum height, presence or absence of intraalveolar fibroelastosis (IAFE), emphysema, interstitial lung disease (ILD), suprasternal depression at the level of clavicle end, and bronchiectasis in upper lobe, and anterior-posterior/transverse diameter ratio (AT ratio) of thoracic cage. Serial CT scans more than 3 years before the baseline scan were also reviewed and compared when available. Results380 patients (median age of 65, M:F = 153:227) were recognized as having PPFE-like finding. The lowest level of PPFE-like finding was T5 in median, horizontal extent was 0–25 % in 229/380, 25–50 % in 66 and >50 % in 24. Median height was 8.0 mm. IAFE was seen in 75, emphysema in 71, ILD in 59, chronic bronchial disorder in 71, suprasternal depression in 148, upper-lobe bronchial dilatation in 124. Mean AT ratio was 0.63. Serial images were available in 131 patients. 11 showed significant progression, 57 showed mild progression. Existing ILD lesion and >25 % horizontal extent were significantly related to significant progression. ConclusionsPPFE-like finding was seen relatively in high proportion. Extensive lesion in axial plane and co-existing ILD might be risk factors of progression.

Cytology and molecular study for GSTP1 effect on asthma Iraqi patients

BackgroundGST belongs to a super family of phase II detoxification enzyme and it plays an important role in preventing the damage that may occur due to reactive water-soluble compounds generated by the association of reactive intermediates with glutathione.MethodIn the present study, we analyzed the frequencies of GSTP1 polymorphism among the Iraqi population using PCR–RFLP technique. Fifty samples from bronchial asthma patients and fifty samples from control cases were subjected to conventional PCR and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) to detect GSTP1 genotype and measured different parameters together such as IgE, eosinophilic count, WBC, and so forth. Some of the cases were made to undergo sequence analysis and enrolled in NCBI GenBank with accession number (MG657249–MG657258). The GSTP1 polymorphism was determined using PCR and the resultant 176-bp fragment was subjected to RFLP and digested with BsamA1 to recognize the A–G transition at nucleotide.ResultsHomozygotes for Ile105 encoding allele resulted in 176-bp fragment found in 62% andVal105 encoding allele had two fragments of 91 and 85 bp in PCR was found in 4% of asthmatic patients. On the other hand, heterozygotes resulted in three fragments of 176, 91 and 85 bp seen in 34% of patients.ConclusionTo the best of the researcher’s knowledge, this is the first-of-its-kind report with regards to the role played by GSTP1 polymorphism in bronchial asthma among the Iraqi patients. Though the study outcomes do not support the large role played by GSTP1 gene polymorphism in the evolution of bronchial asthma disorder, future researchers are suggested to investigate more features for many promising results.

Pollen and spores in yellow rain from Lucknow, northern India

ABSTRACTThis paper presents the results of pollen and spore concentration of yellow drops in the Lucknow environs during the summer of 2014. The yellow spots were procured from the surface of a number of leaves and other objects from three different localities of Lucknow District of Uttar Pradesh. The size and shapes of these spots vary, ranging from linear to circular. Pollen grains recovered in good frequencies chiefly belong to angiosperms, whereas some gymnosperm pollen was also observed in trace frequencies. Other microbiota include fern spores, fungal remains and insect body parts in lower values. The study broadly suggests that palynomorphs recovered from yellow droppings are not fully airborne; rather, they are the types that honey bees gather from crop fields to feed their young. Brassica campestris and Asteroideae are the dominant plant taxa recorded in yellow rain samples. On investigation, it was noticed that yellow drop falling occurred for a few minutes on limited days during the summer of 2014, when the atmosphere experienced optimal temperature conditions with relatively humid environs. The observation also confirms that the yellow spots are nothing but faecal droppings, as suggested by the bee faeces theory which proposed that the origin of yellow rain is a phenomenon of nature. The study, in addition to aiding in understanding yellow rain occurrence, could also be helpful in aerobiological research, especially in examining the allergenicity of various pollen grains/spores in the area of investigation, causing bronchial asthma, hay fever (allergic rhinitis/pollinosis), nasobronchial allergy and other respiratory disorders along with conjunctivitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, food allergies and other health ailments. A multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to quantified data obtained from pollen frequency analyses of different areas of Lucknow, which clearly revealed a significant group variation in vegetation type on the basis of dispersal and deposition of pollen in yellow spots.

Suppression of Ultraviolet B-mediated Matrix Metalloproteinase Generation by Sorbus commixta Twig Extract in Human Dermal Fibroblasts.

Sorbus commixta is a traditional oriental medicinal plant that grows in East Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and China. The twig of S.commixta has been considered valuable for centuries to treat diseases including asthma, cough and other bronchial disorders. However, the effect of S.commixta twig extract on human skin has not been investigated well. The present study aimed at assessing the antiphotoaging effect of S.commixta twig ethanol extract (STE) on ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) levels and its underlying mechanism in human dermal fibroblasts. In this study, we found that STE (12.5-50μgmL-1 ) treatment significantly inhibited UVB-induced MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-3 expression, concomitant with a downregulation of intracellular ROS generation. These effects might be associated with a STE-induced inhibition of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Furthermore, STE also downregulated UVB-induced c-Fos expression in a concentration-dependent manner, but had no inhibitory effect on c-Jun phosphorylation. Taken together, these results indicate that STE may be an antiphotoaging agent and that its effect may occur via its inhibition of MMPs expression and MAPK pathway activation.

Therapeutic potential of omega-3 fatty acid-derived epoxyeicosanoids in cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases.

Numerous benefits have been attributed to dietary long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs), including protection against cardiac arrhythmia, triglyceride-lowering, amelioration of inflammatory, and neurodegenerative disorders. This review covers recent findings indicating that a variety of these beneficial effects are mediated by "omega-3 epoxyeicosanoids", a class of novel n-3 LC-PUFA-derived lipid mediators, which are generated via the cytochrome P450 (CYP) epoxygenase pathway. CYP enzymes, previously identified as arachidonic acid (20:4n-6; AA) epoxygenases, accept eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3; DHA), the major fish oil n-3 LC-PUFAs, as efficient alternative substrates. In humans and rodents, dietary EPA/DHA supplementation causes a profound shift of the endogenous CYP-eicosanoid profile from AA- to EPA- and DHA-derived metabolites, increasing, in particular, the plasma and tissue levels of 17,18-epoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (17,18-EEQ) and 19,20-epoxydocosapentaenoic acid (19,20-EDP). Based on preclinical studies, these omega-3 epoxyeicosanoids display cardioprotective, vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties that contribute to the beneficial effects of n-3 LC-PUFAs in diverse disease conditions ranging from cardiac disease, bronchial disorders, and intraocular neovascularization, to allergic intestinal inflammation and inflammatory pain. Increasing evidence also suggests that background nutrition as well as genetic and disease state-related factors could limit the response to EPA/DHA-supplementation by reducing the formation and/or enhancing the degradation of omega-3 epoxyeicosanoids. Recently, metabolically robust synthetic analogs mimicking the biological activities of 17,18-EEQ have been developed. These drug candidates may overcome limitations of dietary EPA/DHA supplementation and provide novel options for the treatment of cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases.

Bacterial immunotherapy in bronchial asthma

In the treatment of bronchospastic states, primary bacterial bronchial asthma and asthmatic bronchitis, one of the most controversial aspects is the use of bacterial vaccines. In general, the treatment of these conditions is symptomatic, neglecting for the most part the existing bacterial allergy. At present, as a result of great advances in the immunotherapy of these disorders, the importance of an allergic response to bacteria in the etiology of these bronchopathies is beyond doubt. The subjects were 120 patients, 59 women and 51 men, with ages ranging from 7 to 73 years. Of this group, 21 were children less than 12 years old and all had a diagnosis of bronchial asthma or asthmatic bronchitis, with or without paranasal sinusitis, and exclusively of bacterial etiology. In order to study and evaluate the effectiveness of immunotherapy, a questionnaire, reproduced in fig. 1 was sent to the patients three years after the beginning of treatment. For this study, only the answers to this questionnaire were considered. Examination of the results shows that in bronchial disorders with bacterial allergy, treatment with bacterial vaccine achieves a 75% success rate. In the small group of children studied (a larger group is currently under investigation), the results are even more satisfactory, reaching 90.47%. It is noteworthy that the immediate reaction to the skin test was positive (++ to ++++) in 83.32% of the cases. Of the greatest importance also is the associated paranasal sinusitis in 83% of the cases, part of a sinobronchopulmonary syndrome which contributes substantially to this state of bacterial allergy. Significant side effects were found in 52.6% of the patients and consisted mainly of slight catarrhal symptoms, apparent at the beginning of treatment. At present, we have no doubt whatsoever that immunotherapy is much more valuable than prolonged symptomatic therapy in the treatment of primary bacterial bronchial asthma.

MURRAYA KOENIGI -A BOON IN DIFFERENT PATHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Since very long period of time medicinal plants or their bioactive compounds have been utilized by majority of world population particularly in developing countries for primary and traditional healthcare system. At present scenario, people are more interested to use herbal drugs because they are considered as safe and inexpensive having no adverse effects. Different parts of the plants like roots, leaves, stem, bark, fruits and seeds have been used in treatment of different diseases and strengthening the immune system. Murraya koenigii, is a herb from mainly Asian origin, it has therapeutic applications such as in bronchial disorders, piles, vomiting, skin diseases, night blindness, dysentery, diarrhoea, bites of poisonous animals, bruises and eruption etc. The present review is an attempt for description of M. koenigii, its phytochemical constituents and various pharmacological activities.
