Anatomy of Midlife Crisis: From Broken Dreams to the Quest for Meaning

Architecture of a broken dream: The CIA and Guatemala, 1952–54

In 1954, the United States launched a coup against Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz. In 2003, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of State declassified new documents pertaining to the fall of the Arbenz regime. In this paper I argue that although the new information does not substantially alter the overall debate about the causes and consequences of the action, it offers a portrait of the operation which is richer and more complex than what has been seen before. The documents reveal details of the operation which have been hidden for half a century. They illustrate how the mission faltered under the weight of security breaches and miscommunications. They also offer a fascinating glimpse at a shadowy figure in the plot to topple the Arbenz regime who has until now largely evaded the public record. In the end the documents affirm what many scholars had previously concluded, that at the end of the day it was the actions of the Guatemalan Army that made the difference between victory and defeat in the crusade to oust a democratically elected head of state.

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams: The Project of a Reform of the UN Security Council after the 2005 World Summit

The article analyzes the reform plans for the United Nations (UN) Security Council following the 2005 World Summit. The author discusses the impact of the conflicting views of UN member states on the implementation of the reform plans. The implications of the delay in the implementation of the reform plans on international relations are also discussed.

Interpretations of stillbirth.

Continuity is a major concept in the father-son domain of the Han Chinese value system in Taiwan. Aspects of continuity may include structure, interactions and other facets of family; however, providing descendants is the keystone of women's reality in these families. In a culture in which death is seen as a taboo subject and the unborn child has not been recognized as a real baby, losing a long-expected child at the end of pregnancy becomes a great challenge to women who have experienced stillbirth. The aim of this paper is to report a study exploring Taiwanese mothers' interpretations of stillbirth, and their unique sociocultural context. An interpretive ethnographic approach was used. Over a two and a half-year period, 20 women who had experienced such losses after at least 20 weeks of pregnancy were interviewed to find out how they interpreted their babies' deaths. Interview data were analysed thematically. The four major themes identified were: 'loss of control', 'broken dream', 'shattered self' and 'something wrong with me'. Interpretations of stillbirth among Taiwanese women indicate a strong sense of incompleteness and personal failure, triggering reactions in terms of not only maternal identity, but also female cultural roles. Many interviewees blamed themselves for the deaths of their unborn children, a viewpoint resulting in excessive guilt feelings. Culturally bound taboos against talking about death, participating in death-related events, and expressing grief in public affect the adaptation and grieving processes of Taiwanese women who have had a stillbirth. Nurses should, therefore, make an effort to listen to the perspectives of such patients in order to assist them with coming to terms with their loss. As part of their education, nurses require information on cultural beliefs so that they can provide appropriate care to grieving mothers.

Field of Broken Dreams: How Damaged Trust and Failed Induction Weakens the Change Process

Olympia School District, located in a fast growing suburb, attempts to transform Field School, an intermediate school for seven years, into a primary school. As a result, changes in grade level, staff, material resources, and the physical structure must be made. The administration promises assistance with the transition yet the teachers are faced with a lack of materials as well as personal support. The absence of adequate induction to their new position creates a strain in the socialization of the Field School staff. This case presents a multi-faceted dilemma faced by both central office and building level administrators. Professors and students of educational administration can use this case to supplement analysis and discussion of issues related to educational change, trust, and employee induction.

<i>Vineland</i> and Dystopian Fiction

Pynchon's <em>Vineland </em>(1990) presents a vivid and chilling picture of contemporary America as a land of lost hopes and broken dreams, a place where huge, impersonal forces have subtly gained the power to dictate the courses of individual lives. It therefore has much in common with the modern tradition of dystopian fiction, as its setting in 1984 indicates, including, in addition to George Orwell's 1984 (1949), Yevgeny Zamyatin's <em>We </em>(1924) and Aldous Huxley's <em>Brave New World </em>(1932). All these dystopian fictions involve an opposition between rationality (usually the cold rationality of official control) and irrationality (typically the irrational passion of human feeling). This conflict between society and individual, or reason and passion, figures in dystopian fictions in a variety of ways. For example, the authoritarian governments depicted by authors of dystopian fiction tend to regard sexuality as a focus for social control of individual lives, just as those who rebel against such governments often consider sexual emancipation an important part of their rebellions. Dystopian governments also frequently proscribe practices (like the taking of mind-altering drugs) that might lead to alternative states of consciousness or ways of viewing reality. The treatment of the rationality-irrationality and society-individual oppositions by Zamyatin, Huxley, Orwell and Pynchon can be usefully illuminated within the framework of theories of modern culture like those proposed by Michel Foucault. Indeed, the treatment of this issue in dystopian fiction resonates with a number of modern theoretical debates concerning the merits of reason as the paradigm of modern society.

Broken Dreams, False Promises, and the Decline of Public Schooling

The thrust of the most prominent proposals for educational reform in the 1980s has been to make the schools more efficient at servicing the needs of the dominant social order. In the meantime, a backlog of neglected social problems has developed which points up the need for schools to develop the critical faculties of their students. In fact, a wide range of telling statistics on the socio-economic aspects of American education show that the schools themselves are severely impacted by the inequalities present in the larger society—particularly along racial lines. The need for a critical pedagogy is acute.

Broken Dreams: A Study of the Effects of Divorce and Depression on Dream Content

To investigate the dream characteristics associated with a major life change, 29 women (ages 30-55) undergoing divorce were studied six nights in a sleep laboratory. The group was stratified on a self-report depression scale (the Beck Depression Inventory) into a depressed (N = 19, mean = 23.2) and nondepressed (N = 10, mean = 8.2) group and compared to a nondepressed married group who had never considered divorce. The dreams of those divorcing without major mood upset were longer and dealt with a wider time frame than those of the other two groups. They also dealt with marital status issues which were absent in the dreams of the depressed group. On follow-up those who had been depressed showed positive dream changes in mood, dreamlike quality, and identification of dream self with the marital role. The study suggests that some dream characteristics respond adaptively during life changes but that this is delayed when subjects are depressed. This raises the possibility of a corrective intervention for such persons.

The hospital of broken dreams: a systematic investigation of a moribund psychiatric hospital.

This qualitative field research took place in an acute care, private psychiatric hospital. The local psychiatric community believed the hospital to be in severe difficulty because of the chronically low census, high staff turnover, low staff morale, and recurring incidents involving inappropriate and unprofessional staff/stafL stafflpatient behavior. Two models-systems analysis and culture change-are used to examine the empirical data. Systems anabsis appears inadequate to explain some of the data. Two stages of culture change- cultural disequilibrium and cultural distortion-can account for the data. However, the researcher believes neither deductive model is sufficient. A plea is made for fresh creative methods to understand the social, cultural, and psychological realities of patient care.

America as Junkshop: The Business Ethic in David Mamet's American Buffalo

The America of Nathanael West's Miss Lonelyhearts is a spiritual wasteland, the suffering of its people chronicled in the doleful letters received by "Miss Lonelyhearts," the newspaper advice columnist. Psychologically exhausted by the pleas of his readers, Miss Lonelyhearts imagines himself gazing at "the paraphernalia of suffering" through a pawnshop window, seeing among its accumulated objects the remnants of America's broken dreams. Some fifty years later, the secondhand shop reappears in David Mamet's American Buffalo, not as pawnshop, from which possessions may be redeemed, but as junkshop. In Mamet's play, the castoff objects of American life, including souvenirs from the "Century of Progress" exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair and a buffalo nickel, form the pile of cultural artifacts thatthe shop's proprietor, Don, peddles as junk. Within thejunkshop, Mamet's three petty criminals plan the robbery that symbolizes the corrupted, contemporary version of the American success myth. As plans for the heist continue, it becomes clear that for Mamet the decadence of the American dream is directly attributable to the dominance of the American business ethic.
