There is a famous admonition in Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France: “Because half a dozen grasshoppers under a fern make the field ring with their importunate chink, whilst thousands of great cattle, reposed beneath the shadow of the British oak, chew the cud and are silent, pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field; that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little, shrivelled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome, insects of the hour.” Thomas Spence, William Ogilvie, and Thomas Paine, whom I have chosen to call the English agrarians and with whose ideas this paper is concerned, were among those whom Burke dismissed in this manner. I believe he did them less than justice. It is true that while Paine has achieved a stature considerably greater than that of “an insect of the hour,” Spence and Ogilvie remain names–unknown names at that–on a crowded roster of minor political thinkers; and in presuming to advance their status, I bear in mind the comment of a reviewer who has referred to the interest “shown in the words and speeches of millenarian pamphleteers, who are often bloated into veritable Platos or premature Marxes.” I hope to avoid the pitfall of exaggeration. Yet I am convinced they merit more attention than they have hitherto received if only because they, alone among their contemporaries, recognized the outstanding social and economic problem of their time and made it the starting-point of their speculation.

IN view of the deplorable effect of repeated defoliation of oaks by the larvae of Tortrix viridana, as noted by Mr. E. W. Swanton in NATURE for August 19, p. 250, it may be useful to remind planters that there are two distinct races of British oak (Quercus robur, Linn.), to which some botanists have assigned specific rank as Q. pedunculata, Ehrh., and Q. sessiliflora, Salisb. The latter, known in the vernacular as the durmast oak, prevails as an indigenous growth in the western and north-western parts of Great Britain, throughout the English Lake District, and in Ireland. In eastern England and Scotland and in midland and southern England the pedunculate oak predominates, but not exclusively, for I have found that the old trees in Merevale Park, Warwickshire, survivors of the ancient Forest of Arden, are durmast, while such oaks as have been planted there are pedunculate.

Quercetum sessiliflorae (woodland dominated by the Durmast oak) occurs so generally, in this country, on the various soils derived from the older siliceous rocks, that in Types of British Vegetation the association was regarded as typical of these soils, as indeed it is'. It was mentioned however (p. 137) that this type of oak-wood also occurred on later siliceous (secondary) rocks, such, for instance, as the Upper Greensand of Devon, and we have since independently shown (Tansley, '13, Salisbury, '18, p. 15) that it exists also on tertiary and post-tertiary beds in Hertfordshire and Middlesex. With regard to its occurrence on soil derived from calcareous rocks Quercetum sessiliflorae was mentioned in Types of British Vegetation (p. 139) as existing on Carboniferous Limestone at Killarney in Co. Kerry, and one of us has since shown that it is found on the same strata in North Wales (Salisbury, '16, p. 3) and on calcareous slates in Cornwall (unpublished). It is also recorded from the Carboniferous Limestone of the Wye gorge at Symond's Yat (Armitage, '14, p. 103). In Types of British Vegetation an association of the two British oaks (Q. robur and Q. sessiliflora) was described as characteristic of deep sands (p. 92) where either one or the other species may become dominant. It thus becomes of importance to ascertain the actual factors which determine the dominance of Quercus sessiliflora in the British Isles. Some progress has already been made in this task by one of us (Salisbury, '18) who concluded (pp. 47, 48) that the contrast with woods of Q. robur depends, at least partly, on a higher acidity, corresponding with a lower content of soluble mineral salts and of water. The present paper presents the results of a study, not so thorough as could be wished, of the extensive woods of Q. sessiliflora occupying the Malvernian and Silurian strata of the Malvern district. The latter include limestones of the Wenlock and Ludlow series. The woods investigated, with the rocks on which they occur, a're given below.

Plant Galls of Great Britain A Nature-Study Handbook

THIS volume will certainly prove to be of great use to all students of insect and plant life. The. author's previous works, viz., “British Vegetable Galls,” published in 1901, and “British Oak Galls,” published in 1908; are already well known. The present book is intended for the pocket as a guide in the field to botanists and collectors. The descriptions are condensed and brief, but Mr. Connold has not forgotten the value of good illustrations, and each description is. accompanied by an excellent and typical photograph of the gall described. As the author points out, the systematic study of all British plant galls is as yet by no means complete. The subject offers a wide and interesting field for further research. This volume is well adapted to create an interest in these interesting vegetable structures, and to encourage the beginner to pursue his studies further.

Essays in Philosophical Criticism

ONE of the most interesting among the intellectual movements now taking place in this country is the growth and development of that system of philosophical thought which began with Kant, flourished in Germany, and, spreading to England, has only just begun to take root in the minds of some of our ablest thinkers. It is a curious thing to see this exotic springing up thus vigorously side by side with our endemic productions—the one like a vine creeping with the tendrils of its subtle and sensitive analysis; the others, like our British oaks, contented sturdily to rest in the stiff soil of experience without seeking for any supports in the thin air of metaphysics. So rarely has this foreign plant found its way across the Channel that until within the last few years it was scarcely ever to be met with even in the more cultured of our philosophical pleasure-grounds. Probably the last of all the gardens into which it is likely to find its way is that of natural science, and therefore we publish this short notice in order to inform any of our readers who may desire to see the plant in question where they may profitably go to see it, and have all its main features explained to them in admirable English and with the least possible expenditure of time. For these “Essays in Philosophical Criticism” only cover 277 pages, are all written by men of marked ability, who are well saturated with the philosophy which they undertake not only to expound but to extend.
