Mobile impurities interacting with a few one-dimensional lattice bosons

We report a comprehensive study of the ground-state properties of one and two bosonic impurities immersed in small one-dimensional optical lattices loaded with a few interacting bosons. We model the system with a two-component Bose–Hubbard model and solve the problem numerically by means of the exact diagonalization method. We report binding energies of one and two impurities across the superfluid (SF) to Mott-insulator transition and confirm the formation of two-body bound states of impurities induced by repulsive interactions. In particular, we found that an insulator bath induces tightly bound di-impurity dimers, whereas a SF bath induces shallower bound states.

Effects of long-range inter-particle interactions and isolated defect on quantum walks of two hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices

The quantum walk of two hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattice under the effect of long-range inter-particle interaction is studied in detail. We also simulate the influence of an isolated defect that may exist in the lattice on the quantum walk of two particles by adding an additional potential energy to a certain lattice site. Using exact diagonalization method, the continuous-time quantum walk is directly simulated. The numerical simulations show that the range of interaction (long-range or short-range), the strength of the inter-particle interaction, the initial state of the two particles and the presence of the isolated defect have great influences on the quantum walk. Under the effect of strong long-range interaction, the particles initially located on the non-adjacent lattice sites have a co-walking behavior, while under the short-range interactions (nearest-neighbor interactions) only two particles initially located on the neighboring lattice sites can exhibit co-walking. After introducing the isolated defect into the system with strong interaction, two particles residing on the same side of the isolated defect keep co-walking, while two particles located on either sides of the isolated defect or one particle located on the isolated defect and the other particle staying on the side of the isolated defect, the two particles keep stationary or co-walking near the defect, displaying the characteristics of localization. By using the second-order perturbation theory of degenerate quantum system, a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the above numerical results is given. The theoretical analysis reveals the underlying physical law of quantum walks of two particles in one-dimensional lattice under the effects of strong long-range interaction and isolated defect in the lattice.

Simulation of two-boson bound states using arrays of driven-dissipative coupled linear optical resonators

We present a strategy based on two-dimensional arrays of coupled linear optical resonators to investigate the two-body physics of interacting bosons in one-dimensional lattices. In particular, we want to address the bound pairs in topologically non-trivial Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays. Taking advantage of the driven-dissipative nature of the resonators, we propose spectroscopic protocols to detect and tomographically characterize bulk doublon bands and doublon edge states from the spatially-resolved transmission spectra, and to highlight Feshbach resonance effects in two-body collision processes. We discuss the experimental feasibility using state-of-the-art devices, with a specific eye on arrays of semiconductor micropillar cavities.

Negative-quench-induced excitation dynamics for ultracold bosons in one-dimensional lattices

The nonequilibrium dynamics following a quench of strongly repulsive bosonic ensembles in one-dimensional finite lattices is investigated by employing interaction quenches and/or a ramp of the lattice potential. Both sudden and time-dependent quenches are analyzed in detail. For the case of interaction quenches we address the transition from the strong repulsive to the weakly interacting regime, suppressing in this manner the heating of the system. The excitation modes such as the cradle process and the local breathing mode are examined via local density observables. In particular, the cradle mode is inherently related to the initial delocalization and, following a negative interaction quench, can be excited only for incommensurate setups with filling larger than unity. Alternatively, a negative quench of the lattice depth which favors the spatial delocalization is used to access the cradle mode for setups with filling smaller than unity. Our results shed light on possible schemes to control the cradle and the breathing modes. Finally, employing the notion of fidelity we study the dynamical response of the system after a diabatic or adiabatic parameter modulation for short and long evolution times. The evolution of the system is obtained numerically using the ab initio multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons, which permits us to follow nonequilibrium dynamics including the corresponding investigation of higher-band effects.

Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in an Isolated System of Quantum Dipolar Bosons after a Quench

We examine the validity of fluctuation-dissipation relations in isolated quantum systems taken out of equilibrium by a sudden quench. We focus on the dynamics of trapped hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices with dipolar interactions whose strength is changed during the quench. We find indications that fluctuation-dissipation relations hold if the system is nonintegrable after the quench, as well as if it is integrable after the quench if the initial state is an equilibrium state of a nonintegrable Hamiltonian. On the other hand, we find indications that they fail if the system is integrable both before and after quenching.

Dynamic structure factor of one-dimensional lattice bosons in a disordered potential: a spectral fingerprint of the Bose-glass phase

We study the dynamic structure factor of a one-dimensional Bose gas confined in an optical lattice and modeled by the Bose–Hubbard Hamiltonian, using a variety of numerical and analytical approaches. The dynamic structure factor, experimentally measurable by Bragg spectroscopy, is studied in three relevant cases: in the clean regime, featuring either a superfluid or a Mott phase; and in the presence of two types of (quasi-)disordered external potentials: a quasi-periodic potential obtained from a bichromatic superlattice and a random box disorder—both featuring a Bose-glass phase. In the clean case, we show the emergence of a gapped doublon mode (corresponding to a repulsively bound state) for incommensurate filling, well separated from the low-energy acoustic mode. In the disordered case, we show that the dynamic structure factor provides direct insight into the spatial structure of the excitations, unveiling their localized nature, which represents a fundamental signature of the Bose-glass phase. Furthermore, it provides a clear fingerprint of the very nature of the localization mechanism which differs for the two kinds of disorder potentials we consider. In special cases, the dynamic structure factor may provide an estimate of the position of the localization transition from superfluid to Bose glass, in a complementary manner to the information deduced from the momentum distribution.

Scaling of noise correlations in one-dimensional-lattice–hard-core-boson systems

Noise correlations are studied for systems of hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices. We use an exact numerical approach based on the Bose-Fermi mapping and properties of Slater determinants. We focus on the scaling of the noise correlations with system size in superfluid and insulating phases, which are generated in the homogeneous lattice, with period-two superlattices and with uniformly distributed random diagonal disorder. For the superfluid phases, the leading contribution is shown to exhibit a density-independent scaling proportional to the system size, while the first subleading term exhibits a density-dependent power-law exponent.

Rise and fall of hidden string order of lattice bosons

We investigate the ground-state properties of a newly discovered phase of one-dimensional lattice bosons with extended interactions [E. G. Dalla Torre et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 260401 (2006)]. The new phase, termed the Haldane insulator in analogy with the gapped phase of spin-1 chains, is characterized by a nonlocal order parameter, which can only be written as an infinite string in terms of the bosonic densities. We show that the string order can nevertheless be probed with physical fields that couple locally, via the effect those fields have on the quantum phase transitions separating the exotic phase from the conventional Mott and density wave phases. Using a field theoretical analysis, we show that a perturbation that breaks lattice inversion symmetry gaps the critical point separating the Mott and Haldane phases and eliminates the sharp distinction between them. This is remarkable given that neither of these phases involves broken inversion symmetry. We also investigate the evolution of the phase diagram with the tunable coupling between parallel chains in an optical lattice setup. We find that interchain tunneling destroys the direct phase transition between the Mott and Haldane insulators by establishing an intermediate superfluid phase. On the other hand, coupling the chains only by weak repulsive interactions does not modify the structure of the phase diagram. The theoretical predictions are confirmed with numerical calculations using the density matrix renormalization group.

Low-energy effective theory for one-dimensional lattice bosons near integer filling

A low-energy effective theory for interacting bosons on a one-dimensional lattice at and near integer fillings is proposed. It is found that two sets of bosonic phase fields are necessary in order to explain the complete phase diagram. Using the present effective theory, the nature of the quantum phase transitions among various phases can be identified. Moreover, the general condition for the appearance of the recently proposed Pfaffian-like state can be realized from our effective action.

Pfaffian-like ground state for three-body hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices

We propose a Pfaffian-like ansatz for the ground state of bosons subject to three-body infinite repulsive interactions in a one-dimensional (1D) lattice. Our ansatz consists of symmetrization over all possible ways of distributing the particles in two identical Tonks-Girardeau gases. We support the quality of our ansatz with numerical calculations and propose an experimental scheme based on mixtures of bosonic atoms and molecules in 1D optical lattices in which this Pfaffian-like state could be realized. Our findings may open the way for the creation of non-Abelian anyons in 1D systems.
