Blue Screen of Death: disrupting transparent windows, composite media, and the aesthetics of continuity

This article proposes that the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), experienced on personal computers when Microsoft Windows crashes materializes technology as monitor, operating system and graphical user interface. The navy blue colour used to signal Windows’ initial interface as well as its most famous error screen points to the affinity between computers and classical Hollywood cinema. Graphic user interface (GUI) borrowed heavily from the conventions of Classical Hollywood in order to create a seamless experience out of disparate graphic elements. The computer GUI is built upon a blue screen base, much like composite cinema in the 1930s was rooted in the use of a background blue screen. In both instances, elements are stacked onto blue background in order to create a seamless experience and obscure the underpinning blue layer following an aesthetic of continuity.

DIFFERENT SHADING ENVIRONMENTS IMPACT GROWTH AND YIELD OF THREE MINI-TOMATO CULTIVARS

ABSTRACT Our study was conducted in the experimental field of the Department of Technology and Social Sciences (DTCS) of the State University of Bahia - UNEB, Juazeiro-BA. The experimental design was comprised of randomized blocks, sub-subdivided in plots, with four replicates comprising the plots of three different shading methods, gray shading screen (GS), red shading screen (RS), and blue shading screen (BS), and the control treatment with no shading. The subplots comprised three mini-tomato cultivars (“Sweet Million”, “Red Sugar”, and “Shani”), and sub-subplots consisted of seven sampling times. The traits evaluated were: dry matter accumulation in leaves, stems, roots, and fruits, total dry matter, shoot length, root length, total number of fruits, and overall yield. The results of the growth analysis showed that dry matter accumulation in organs of mini tomatoes was similar in all treatments and that the highest total dry matter accumulation occurred under RS. In all treatments, fruit was the preferential drainage; however, the cultivar “Red Sugar” showed higher dry matter accumulation in other plant organs. “Red Sugar” also showed the highest number of fruits per plant; however, when we evaluated total productivity, “Sweet Million” and “Shani” showed similar, higher values than “Red Sugar”.

Emergence and nosocomial spread of carbapenem-resistant OXA-232-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Brunei Darussalam.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are identified as a major global health concern. The success of CRE is facilitated by the emergence, acquisition and spread of successful clones carrying plasmid-encoded resistance genes. In this study, an outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections in patients hospitalised in Brunei Darussalam was investigated. Over a 3-month period (May-July 2015), five multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae were recovered from individual patients admitted to intensive care units at two hospitals (RIPAS and PMMPMHAB) in Brunei. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by broth microtitre dilution using a Micronaut-S β-lactamase VII kit or by Etest. Carbapenemase production was confirmed using the RAPID CARB Blue screen, and classes A-D β-lactamases were detected by multiplex PCR. Molecular typing was performed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) PCR and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), with associated virulence and capsular types identified by PCR and sequencing. Plasmids were extracted, sized and characterised by PCR-based replicon typing. All isolates were resistant to cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, quinolones and sulfonamides but remained susceptible to polymyxins. Isolates were indistinguishable by RAPD-PCR and all belonged to sequence type (ST231). Resistance was due to the production of OXA-232 and CTX-M-15 β-lactamases, with the blaOXA-232 carbapenemase gene located on a ColE-like plasmid. This is the first report of plasmid-encoded OXA-232-producing CRKP in Brunei hospitals. All isolates were members of ST231, which may be representatives of a high-risk CRKP clone disseminating across Southeast Asia.

A novel video forgery detection algorithm for blue screen compositing based on 3-stage foreground analysis and tracking

Blue screen compositing is one of the most common methods to do video forgery. However, few algorithms have been proposed to detect the forgery in this form. This paper presents a 3-stage Foreground Analysis and Tracking algorithm (3FAT) to detect blue screen compositing. The 3FAT algorithm contains three major stages: foreground block extraction, forged block detection and forged block tracking. The first stage extracts the foreground blocks by a multi-pass foreground locating method. In the second stage, a feature-comparison level fusion of local features consisting of luminance and contrast is put forward to seek out the tampered foreground block. In the last stage, a fast target search algorithm based on Compressive Tracking is used to track the tampered block of subsequent frames. Compared with previous algorithm, 3FAT can not only rule out the distractions of noise and other moving foregrounds, but also be applied to any video format, bit rate and encoding mechanism. The experiments show that the 3FAT algorithm has higher accuracy and performs well in terms of speed.

Growth and production of Heliconia under different light conditions

The use of shading screens of different colors can change the spectral quality of radiation and, as a consequence, the growth and production of crop plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate aspects of the growth, yield, and quality of floral stems of Heliconia psittacorum × H. spathocircinata ‘Golden Torch’ grown under different light conditions. The treatments consisted of four conditions: blue photoconversion screens (35%-40%); red photoconversion screens (18%-21%); black shading screens (45%-49%), and full sunlight. The experiment consisted of two parts. In the first, growth was assessed, whereas in the second, aspects related to the production and quality of floral stems were examined. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with split plots in time. Each plot contained six blocks, with 11 replications per block, giving a total of 66 pots per plot. The evaluations were performed at 30-day intervals over a 6-month period. In the analysis of growth, red screens contributed to the growth of the plants, increasing the number of shoots and leaves, and also plant height. The productivity and quality of floral stems was, however, highest in plants grown under blue and black screens. It can be concluded that, under the prevailing experimental conditions, the use of blue screens (35%-40%) and black screens (45%-49%) is suitable for production of the floral stems of ‘Golden Torch’ heliconia.

Intensity and spectral quality of the radiation can be manipulated with the use of neutral or color shading screens in growing plants, and it can promote physiological and morphological changes. Therefore, the purpose was evaluating the effects of different shading levels, screens spectral quality, and spacing in the development of cv. Jungle King and cv. Jungle Queen gingers. Rhizomes were planted in 5 cultivation environments (full sun, black screen 50%, black screen 30%, blue screen 50% and red screen 50% shading) and 2 spacing (0.8 x 1.0 m and 0.8 x 1.5 m). The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial 5x2x2x7, with 5 environments of cultivation, 2 cultivars, 2 spacing between plants and 7 times of evaluation (55, 120, 200, 255, 285, 335 e 370 days after planting (DAP)). The evaluations were shooting index, number of shoots per plant, shoot height and number of leaves per shoot. Shooting of cv. Jungle Queen was earlier compared to cv. Jungle King. Spacing did not influence in the initial development of plants. Screens with 50% shading, in blue or red colors, enhanced alpinia development.

Automatic Trimap Generation and Consistent Matting for Light-Field Images

In this paper, we introduce an automatic approach to generate trimaps and consistent alpha mattes of foreground objects in a light-field image. Our method first performs binary segmentation to roughly segment a light-field image into foreground and background based on depth and color. Next, we estimate accurate trimaps through analyzing color distribution along the boundary of the segmentation using guided image filter and KL-divergence. In order to estimate consistent alpha mattes across sub-images, we utilize the epipolar plane image (EPI) where colors and alphas along the same epipolar line must be consistent. Since EPI of foreground and background are mixed in the matting area, we propagate the EPI from definite foreground/background regions to unknown regions by assuming depth variations within unknown regions are spatially smooth. Using the EPI constraint, we derive two solutions to estimate alpha when color samples along epipolar line are known, and unknown. To further enhance consistency, we refine the estimated alpha mattes by using the multi-image matting Laplacian with an additional EPI smoothness constraint. In experimental evaluations, we have created a dataset where the ground truth alpha mattes of light-field images were obtained by using the blue screen technique. A variety of experiments show that our proposed algorithm produces both visually and quantitatively high-quality alpha mattes for light-field images.

The Impact of Using Solar Colored Filters to Cover the PV Panel in Its Outcomes

The solar radiation intensity is the primary parameter that affects the PV panel outcomes. However, the solar radiation has a group of wavelengths, and each one of them can influence the solar cell in a different way from other wavelengths. The spectrum wavelengths are related to the energy's frequencies. The present study aimed to find the wavelength/color that causes the highest PV panel outcome and the best electricity conversion. Seven colored filters were added once solo and once again combined but except one. The study results reveal that the PV panel output for the natural spectrum is the highest compared to the other colored light. This is almost certainly due to the loss of light intensity inherent to the tint of the color filters. The blue screen employment resulted in lowest output power compared to the other colored filter. The study results proved that the visible spectrum of the solar radiation affects the solar panel outcomes.

Blue Screen of Death Observed for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 under DDoS Security Attack

Microsoft server Operating Systems are considered to have in-built, host based security features that should provide some protection against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. In this paper, we presented results of experiments that were conducted to test the security capability of the latest server Operating System from Microsoft Inc., namely Windows Server 2012 R2. Experiments were designed to evaluate its in-built security features in defending against a common Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, namely the TCP-SYN based DDoS attack. Surprisingly, it was found that the Windows Server 2012 R2 OS lacked sufficient host-based protection and was found to be unable to defend against even a medium intensity3.1 Gbps-magnitude of TCP-SYN attack traffic. The server was found to crash within minutes after displaying a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) under such security attacks.

Application of Prussian Blue electrodes for amperometric detection of free chlorine in water samples using Flow Injection Analysis

The performance for free chlorine detection of surfactant-modified Prussian Blue screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs/PB-BZT) have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry and constant potential amperometry. The characterization of SPCEs/PB-BZT by X-ray photoemission, Raman and infrared spectroscopies confirmed the correct electrodeposition of the surfactant-modified PB film. These electrodes were incorporated in a Flow Injection device and the optimal working conditions determined as a function of experimental variables such as detection potential, electrolyte concentration or flow-rate. The sensor presented a linear response in the range 0–3ppm free chlorine, with a sensitivity of 16.2μAppm−1cm−2. The limit of detection (LOD) (S/N=3.3) and the limit of quantification (S/N=10) amounted to 8.25 and 24.6ppb, respectively, adequate for controlling tap and drinking waters. To demonstrate the feasibility of using this free chlorine sensor for real applications possible interferences such as nitrate, nitrite and sulfate ions were successfully tested and discarded. Real free chlorine analysis was carried out in spiked tap water samples and commercial bleaches.

An Alternative Green Screen Keying Method for Film Visual Effects

This study focuses on a green screen keying method developed especially for film visual effects. There are a series of ways of using existing tools for creating mattes from green or blue screen plates. However, it is still a time-consuming process, and the results vary especially when it comes to retaining tiny details,such as hair and fur. This paper introduces an alternative concept and method for retaining edge details of characters on a green screen plate, also, a number of connected mathematical equations are explored. At the end of this study, a simplified process of applying this method in real productions is also tested.

Targeting accurate object extraction from an image: a comprehensive study of natural image matting.

With the development of digital multimedia technologies, image matting has gained increasing interests from both academic and industrial communities. The purpose of image matting is to precisely extract the foreground objects with arbitrary shapes from an image or a video frame for further editing. It is generally known that image matting is inherently an ill-posed problem because we need to output three images out of only one input image. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the existing image matting algorithms and evaluate their performance. In addition to the blue screen matting, we systematically divide all existing natural image matting methods into four categories: 1) color sampling-based; 2) propagation-based; 3) combination of sampling-based and propagation-based; and 4) learning-based approaches. Sampling-based methods assume that the foreground and background colors of an unknown pixel can be explicitly estimated by examining nearby pixels. Propagation-based methods are instead based on the assumption that foreground and background colors are locally smooth. Learning-based methods treat the matting process as a supervised or semisupervised learning problem. Via the learning process, users can construct a linear or nonlinear model between the alpha mattes and the image colors using a training set to estimate the alpha matte of an unknown pixel without any assumption about the characteristics of the testing image. With three benchmark data sets, the various matting algorithms are evaluated and compared using several metrics to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of each method both quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, we conclude this paper by outlining the research trends and suggesting a number of promising directions for future development.

The color red distorts time perception for men, but not for women.

We investigated the effect of the color red on time perception using a temporal bisection task with human adults. The results showed that the perceived duration of a red screen was longer than was that of a blue screen. However, the results reflected sex differences; men, but not women, overestimated the duration of the red screen. Additionally, the reaction times to a red screen were faster than those to a blue screen, and we found a significant correlation between reaction time and the tendency to overestimate the duration of a red screen. Participants who reacted quickly to a red screen overestimated its duration. These results are discussed within the context of recent studies indicating that the color red exerts certain special psychological effects on human behavior.

Parallax of the proper calyx with c-arm is a core learning objective. Existing training systems use virtual reality(VR) or fluoro-assisted biologic and synthetic models. VR models have limitations and are expensive and fluoroscopy is impractical and is associated with unnecessary exposure to radiation. We report the development and initial validation of a fluoro-less percutaneous renal access trainer. METHODS A mini C-arm was designed and 3D printed. Two videocameras were mounted on the anterior and posterior portion of the C. The C was designed to tilt and rainbow. A clear flank model was created with a silicon material with a cast of a University of Minnesota SimPORTAL calyceal model in it filled with fluid. The silicon model has been then covered with a "blue screen" skin-like, colored material and provided with a physical reproduction of the 10th-12th ribs. The two cameras have been connected to a computer for image processing to produce the final on-screen image. RESULTS The C-arm navigation trainer has face and content validity for training percutaneous access. It does so successfully without radiation exposure. The novel double camera system and the image processing software were able to obtain visual information enough to accomplish correctly the training tasks, without expensive additional 3d motion tracking technologies. CONCLUSIONS The fluoroscopy-less C-arm navigation trainer accurately replicates the functions of a real X-ray system, without any radiation exposure related issues, regardless the time it takes to complete the training sessions. Revisiting Michael Snow’s Wavelength, after Deleuze’s Time-Image

Abstract Michael Snow’s Wavelength (1967) is one of the most written about avant-garde films. It has served as “a blue screen in front of which a range of ideological and intellectual dramas have been played out,” as Elizabeth Legge put it in a book-length study of the film, whose recent publication testifies to the continuing relevance of the film (Legge 2009). This paper takes Annette Michelson’s article, Toward Snow, one of the first and most often cited encounters with Snow’s cinema, as its point of departure (Michelson 1978). Michelson sees the film as a reflection which reveals the cinema as a temporal narrative medium. Drawing on Husserl’s phenomenology of time-consciousness, she argues that this reflection on the medium is at the same time a reflection on the structures of consciousness. However, the paper also draws on the work of Gilles Deleuze, whose two-volume study of the cinema has opened up new possibilities for thinking about time and the cinema (Deleuze 1983, 1985). The paper is not an interpretation of Deleuze. It appropriates and puts to work his idea that the cinema is not essentially a narrative medium; but a medium that disrupts linear time, making visible a non-chronological dimension of time, which fragments the subject and exposes it to liminal situations. Wavelength, I argue, reverses the flow of time, to make visible an abyss at the heart of time, which shatters the unity of the subject

An amperometric lactate biosensor using H2O2 reduction via a Prussian Blue impregnated poly(ethyleneimine) surface on screen printed carbon electrodes to detect anastomotic leak and sepsis

Lactate detection by biosensors is of increasing importance in clinical applications to provide rapid, point of care, serial measurements for early diagnosis of disorders such as intra-abdominal sepsis to reduce morbidity and mortality. We present a method for the detection and quantification of lactate using pre-impregnated Prussian Blue screen printed carbon electrodes and polyethyleneimine polymer. The resulting amperometric lactate biosensor exhibited a reproducible response to lactate. Data was validated using cyclic voltammetry, and key parameters for sensor fabrication were systematically evaluated. The biosensor showed little response to possible interferents, including ascorbic acid. Biosensor results using clinical peritoneal drain fluid samples demonstrated significant concordance with a commercial lactate assay (rs=0.891, P=0.001). We therefore present a robust and sensitive lactate biosensor using a simple adsorption based methodology which has the capacity to be a potentially valuable diagnostic test for intra-abdominal sepsis and anastomotic leak.

Red Light Districts on Blue Screens: A Typology for Understanding the Evolution of Deviant Communities on the Internet

Sexual deviance was traditionally divided into normal, pathological, and sociological behaviors by Gagnon and Simon (1967). Quinn and Forsyth (2005) modified that typology by adding cross-cutting continuums describing the normative status and social organization of behaviors in order to keep pace with changing sexual mores and technology while bolstering its empirical rigor. This article extends that model based on the original typology's use in research while making heuristic suggestions about the nature of communities based on sexually deviant desires and the issues they pose for research. The revised typology matches “popular,” “tolerated, ” and “pathological” deviance with levels of communities (isolated, virtual, and direct contact) in a pair of scales that can be expanded or truncated to facilitate different research goals.

Real-time Background Subtraction for Video Avatar

Background subtraction is widely used method of detecting moving objects in static background in computer vision fields. In this paper, we present real-time background subtraction method for video avatar system or video conferencing without blue screen. We observed the noise of digital camera and made a range matrix for background masking. Noise reductions were applied to both background and mask using median filter blurring and open operation. Our experiment was performed using notebook PC and built-in webcam. The results showed our approach is feasible to real-time indoor environments.
