Blue Ocean Strategy: Thesis and Antithesis

The purpose of this paper is to explore the overarching theme of blue ocean strategy thesis and its determinants, alongside the arguments building the antithesis of blue ocean strategy and its determining factors. The approach included reviewing the empirical and seminal literature inclusive of books on blue ocean strategy and articles published by eminent scholars and researchers. The paper presents in detail the theme encompassed by blue ocean strategy, elaborates the theoretical perspectives and highlights its components inclusive of description of frameworks and analytical tools. Porter’s theoretical perspective on strategy was incorporated in the discussion to build the arguments for antithesis and conclusions are accordingly drawn. This paper is meant to provide some diverse perspectives on Strategy, the related description of frameworks and analytical tools for the constituencies of academia, practitioners and policy makers. This review study may advance knowledge in the domain of understanding Strategy, its two contrasting theories along with linked determinants and constructs from different lenses, relevant for academia, practitioners, and policy makers.

Business Strategy and Enterprise Modeling: Nokia Case Study

This study aims to analyze the main causes of Nokia's market share decline and formulate recovery strategies using the PESTEL framework, Porter’s Five Forces analysis, and SWOT. The research adopts a case study method, collecting data from Nokia’s financial reports, industry reports, and relevant academic literature. Key findings reveal that Nokia’s delayed adoption of smartphone technology and internal management conflicts significantly contributed to the company’s downfall. Additionally, the PESTEL analysis highlights external challenges such as shifting consumer preferences and intense technological competition. Based on the analysis, strategic recommendations include adopting a Blue Ocean strategy, internal restructuring, and enhancing technological innovation to regain Nokia's competitive advantage. This research provides valuable insights into how technology companies can avoid decline in rapidly changing industries.

Incorporation of coffee grounds powder as reinforcement in epoxy resin for high-performance industrial coatings: a cost of goods sold and blue ocean strategy analysis

In some organic waste treatment facilities, coffee grounds are utilized for biogas production through anaerobic digestion processes. However, this method is expensive and complex. An innovative alternative involves transforming coffee grounds into a new product, a high-performance coating. This study explores a strategic analysis for this new product. The composite is created by adding coffee grounds in an epoxy matrix as reinforcement. Different proportions of coffee grounds were added to epoxy, and resulting composites evaluated for mechanical and thermal properties. Previous analysis shows some promising results for the material, but none evaluations of fabrication cost or revenue were done, so a cross-analysis between the cost of goods sold (COGS) and the Blue Ocean Strategy model was used to identify market opportunities and compared the obtain product with nowadays market ones. Coffee grounds in epoxy offer a sustainable option, opening new market avenues with competitive performance and cost. This composite could impact industrial coatings, promoting eco-friendly practices.

A Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) and a blue ocean analysis for titica vine composite in epoxy matrix for civil construction applications as thermal and acoustic insulation

The use of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) offers a sustainable alternative to deforestation, benefiting both socioeconomic and ecological aspects. In Brazil, various species of the Heteropsis genus, known as titica vine, share aerial root emission characteristics and have been used by rural communities since colonial Brazil. This study offers a strategic analysis for the vine composite, both cost of goods sold (COGS) and blue ocean analysis were performed. An initial investigation indicates that Titica vine composites can obtain thermal and acoustic insulation properties as good as the current used material, with a lower production cost. The blending of titica vine with epoxy aims to create a composite with thermal and acoustic insulation comparable to nowadays materials. So the objective of this paper is to identify the composites fabrication costs (COGS) and best market opportunities, with a Blue Ocean Strategy analysis. Results show titica vine significantly boosts cost benefit relation, decreasing the manufacture costs. This study underscores titica vine composite as an eco-friendly material, offering sustainable solutions. Its innovative use could impact the industry.

The feasibility of using epoxy resin reinforced with sugar cane bagasse residue for a high performance coatings: a cost of goods sold and blue ocean analysis

The natural and biodegradable characteristics of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) make it a promising ingredient for composite materials. Researchers have explored ecological and low-cost materials, identifying SCB as a green option with low pollution levels. This study investigates the strategic position for SCB and epoxy composite when applied as high-performance coatings. Epoxy resin is valued for its adhesion, strength and durability. Integrating sustainable, cost-effective reinforcements is vital for enhancing these properties and reducing environmental impact. SCB, a sugar industry waste, has favorable characteristics like fibrous structure and polymer compatibility. In this research, SCB residue was processed and incorporated into epoxy resin. Both analisys the Cost of Goods Solds (COGS) and a Blue Ocean Strategy analysis identified new market opportunities, positioning this composite as a sustainable, high-performance solution in coatings. It´s relevant to point that SCB could offer substantial improves on corrosion resistance, offering a sustainable alternative with competitive performance and cost.

Competitive Strategy Analysis and Formulation of Selected Strategy Alternatives Through the Blue Ocean Strategy Approach at PT XYZ

PT XYZ is a dairy manufacturing company in an industry that has high competition. Products from PT XYZ are not satisfactory even though the price is competitive, so they often do not reach sales and revenue targets. This research aims to find out the internal and external conditions of PT XYZ and formulate the right strategy to compete in the market. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, collecting primary data through interviews, questionnaires, and observations, as well as secondary data from company literature and other sources. Sampling was carried out by the purposive sampling method and the validity of the data was checked using source triangulation. Data analysis was carried out using various matrices such as IFE, EFE, IE, SWOT, and QSPM, as well as blue ocean strategies for the implementation of the right strategy. The results of the study show that the IFE matrix score is 2.607 and the EFE matrix score is 3.435, so that the position of PT XYZ on the SWOT diagram in quadrant II. From the results of the SWOT matrix, the company has 11 alternative strategies, including 4 SO strategies, 2 ST strategies, 3 WO strategies, 2 WT strategies. An alternative strategy that is the main priority based on the eval_uation of the QSPM matrix is product innovation. The recommended strategy for PT XYZ to face competition is to innovate products. By developing new dairy products that have added value or new variants, PT XYZ can differentiate itself from competitors in the dairy market. These innovative products can attract the attention of consumers who are looking for variety or additional benefits from dairy products. Through this innovative product, PT XYZ can increase sales and expand the market.

Pendekatan Blue Ocean Strategy pada Labuda Kopi dalam Menghadapi Persaingan Coffe Shop di Sidoarjo

This study aims to determine the strategy used by managers to face competition in coffee shops in Sidoarjo using the Blue Ocean Strategy Approach. In this study, the method used was a qualitative descriptive approach. Qualitative descriptive research has the objective of describing, illustrating, and explaining in greater depth the problem being observed. In qualitative research, the main subject of research is human beings, and the results of this research are manifested in the form of words appropriate to the field situation. The results of this research through the E-R-R-C scheme set for Labuda Kopi are as follows: First, in the step to eliminate, the menu of Honey Spices Lime and Honey Spices Flower Tea is abolished. Then, in the subtract step, the price of the product that has been set will be reduced. Furthermore, in the step of upgrading, Labuda Kopi will add stands with shade, improve marketing strategies, and increase the facilities provided. Finally, in the creation step, Labuda Kopi will create new distinctive coffee variants and also create a new set menu.

Implementation of Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) at the Opening of the UNINDRA PGRI Digital Business Department

The decreasing number of student admissions, especially when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the increasing number of universities in Jakarta, the competition is getting tighter. For this reason, implementing the Blue Ocean Strategy by opening a Digital Business major is the right way to get out of the competition and find new, unexplored opportunities and markets. The aim of this research is to describe the process of implementing BOS at the opening of the Digital Business major. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach using interviews, observation and documentation studies as data collection techniques. The research results show that the formulation of the blue ocean strategy is going well, especially the decision to open a Digital Business major through the stages of market boundary reconstruction, ERRC scheme, 3 non-consumer levels and strategic series. This is proven by the number of students who choose this major amounting to approximately 300 people with a class size of 10. Relevant curriculum development, industrial collaboration, use of technology in learning, lecturer training and effective promotion are suggestions that should be considered for the success of this implementation in long-term

The research method used is a qualitative method based on literature studies from previous research, by evaluating and analyzing relevant scientific journals. To implement Blue Ocean Strategy effectively, there are several tools and frameworks that can be used, such as the Blue Ocean Strategy Canvas and the ECRR Blue Ocean Strategy concept. In order to create opportunities for the tourism industry without competition, a situation analysis was carried out using SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to understand the current position of Bangka Belitung. Natural beauty is one of the strengths that can be developed in developing tourism in Bangka Belitung. Apart from that, it is also necessary to identify new market opportunities such as ecotourism, local culture or unique adventures. Through the application of the Blue Ocean Strategy and its principles, the Bangka Belitung tourism industry has the potential to create a unique and unexplored new market.

Evaluation of Growth Strategies on the Organizational Performance of Retail Stores – A Case Study of Quick Mart Supermarket Stores In Nairobi, Kenya

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of growth strategies on the organizational performance of retail stores in Nairobi with Quick Mart supermarket stores in Nairobi as the case study. The question guiding this research was: How does technology adoption strategy impact the organizational performance of Quick Mart supermarket stores in Nairobi County? The blue ocean strategy theory provided support for this investigation. A descriptive research strategy was used. The target population for this study was 125 managers who work at Quick Mart. A purposive sampling procedure was used to obtain a sample size of 95. This study used both descriptive and correlational analysis as its research design. Data was gathered using structured questionnaires. The data gathered was analyzed through descriptive analysis and presented in tables. The findings indicated a Pearson correlation of 0.841 for technology adoption and the regression analysis indicated a beta coefficient of 0.620 for technology adoption. The study concluded that technology adoption had a highly positive significant impact on organizational performance. The study suggested that to improve organizational performance, growth tactics should be adopted more widely.

Blue Ocean Strategy in the Soccer Sector: A Real Madrid Case Study

The present study aims to analyze the management actions adopted by the Real Madrid club through the lens of the Four Actions Framework of the Blue Ocean Strategy. It is a systematic literature review using the methodology Methodi Ordinatio and employs content analysis as the analytical approach. Searches were conducted in the Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus databases in May 2023. The research portfolio included 19 articles. The analytical content analysis procedure was carried out using NVivo Pro 14 software. Applying the Blue Ocean Four Actions Framework provided insights into Real Madrid's management strategies and business success. The findings illuminate various aspects of Real Madrid's operations, encompassing website structure, values, communication strategies, management approaches, financial performance, and areas for potential enhancement. Marketing Strategy of Shrimp Paste Home Industry in Muarabaru Village, Cilamaya Wetan District, Karawang Regency

Shrimp paste by home industry in Muarabaru Village, Cilamaya Wetan Subdistrict, Karawang Regency often faces problems especially in its marketing strategy, including simple packaging, unstrategic location, and limited promotion. The purpose of this research is to analyze the business model and design a new marketing strategy for the shrimp paste by home industry in Muarabaru Village. This research uses a qualitative approach with Business Model Canvas (BMC) and quantitative with Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS). The sampling technique was purposive sampling with 38 respondents consisting of business actors, retail traders, consumers, and experts. This study found that the shrimp paste by home industry in Muarabaru Village needs to improve, reduce, and create its marketing strategy. The most important thing to improve is the strategy of providing electronic payment tools such as banks and digital wallets to facilitate the transaction process with a score of 3.49. The most important thing to reduce is the strategy of maintaining discounts with a score of -1.46. The most important thing to create is a strategy to provide educational tourism facilities for making shrimp paste with a score of 4.52. It can be concluded that home industry in Muarabaru Village need to be more open about the times and technological advances to develop their business.

Blue Ocean Strategy: Review of Applications at Nature Elementary School Purwakarta

This study aims to investigate and describe the application of the blue ocean strategy (BOS) in the Nature Elementary School Purwakarta. This research is a qualitative description model. Data collection is done through interviews, documentation, and observation. Respondents involved foundation managers, supervisors, school principals, teachers, parents, students, and community leaders who understand the development of education. Data were analyzed using triangulation techniques. The results showed that the Purwakarta nature elementary school was successful in implementing the blue ocean strategy through the creation of innovation, differentiation and quality improvement through the 4 steps of BOS Eliminate, Reduce, Raise, Create (ERRC). Philosophy, vision and mission, curriculum development, flagship programs, improvement of infrastructure, the use of technology and the development of human resources are key components that will enable the school to create its own blue ocean space. Another finding is that institutions without uniqueness and superiority tend to make them take pseudo advantages which make them just imitate and eventually get tired and give up in competition. So it is important to make blue ocean as a tool for educational organizations to be at an advantage without competition by implementing blue ocean strategy scientific procedures that have proven successful in business, industry and also education.

Kayak Boy: an entrepreneurial venture in a blue ocean industry

Learning outcomes After completion of the case study, the students will learn about the blue ocean strategies that are adopted by entrepreneurs when they are entering into a new business territory and be able to perform an industry analysis and understand the competitive advantage that a firm possesses in a new market using Porter’s five forces framework. Case overview/synopsis This case study is about Sushant, an entrepreneur, who started his entrepreneurial venture in water sports tourism along the coastlines of India. His core business was into offering kayaking and camping activities. However, he planned to scale up his business by expanding its geographical reach. To fulfill this, he was also planning to manufacture his own kayaks, which would increase economies of scale in the long run. This case study investigates the dilemma of whether he should first increase his service offerings before expanding geographically or focus on geographical expansion and then increase service offerings.
