Head injury management in road accident patients: a case report

Objective: To examine recovery outcomes for patients with head injuries from road traffic accidents (RTAs), focusing on neurosurgical care. Methodology: We studied patients admitted to our hospital with head injuries from RTAs. This included a case study of a 55-year-old man severely injured in a road accident, highlighting neuropsychological assessments and treatment outcomes. Results: The case report presents the successful recovery of a 55-year-old patient who sustained severe head injuries from a road traffic accident. Following neurosurgical intervention to remove blood clots and comprehensive neuropsychological therapy, the patient showed significant improvement in memory and cognitive functions. The outcomes demonstrate a positive response to the integrated treatment approach, with the patient regaining substantial normalcy in life over the course of three months. Conclusion: The case of a 55-year-old patient highlights the challenges and outcomes of treating severe head injuries resulting from RTAs. Key findings include the importance of immediate and appropriate neurosurgical care and neuropsychological support.

FREQUÊNCIA DA HOSPITALIZAÇÃO DOS CASOS DE EMBOLIA E TROMBOSE ARTERIAL EM MONTES CLAROS

Arterial thrombosis occurs when the formation of a blood clot completely blocks or impairs the flow of blood from an artery, which are the medium and large caliber vessels in our body responsible for transporting oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to the tissues. This is a quantitative descriptive study whose data were collected in the Ministry of Health's online program TABNET-DATASUS, related to the municipality of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. The selected variables were hospitalization by year of processing, age group, sex, color/race, and deaths during the period from 2017 to 2021. It is noted that with the analysis of the results obtained and the literature, that with advancing age, changes occur in normal aging, making individuals more prone to develop diseases, added to unhealthy habits and/or decompensated chronic diseases throughout life becomes even more predisposed.

Inpatient Outcomes of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis in Patients With Malignancy Throughout the United States.

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. Our objective is to elucidate characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of patients with cancer and CVT (CA-CVT). The 2016-2019 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was queried for patients with a primary diagnosis of CVT. Patients with a currently active diagnosis of malignancy (CA-CVT) were then identified. Demographics and comorbidities were compared between CA-CVT and CVT patients. Subgroup analyses explored patients with hematopoietic cancer and non-hematopoietic cancers. Stroke severity and treatment were explored. Inpatient outcomes studied were discharge disposition, length of stay, and mortality. Between 2016 and 2019, 6,140 patients had a primary diagnosis code of CVT, and 370 (6.0%) patients had a coexisting malignancy. The most common malignancy was hematopoietic (n=195, 52.7%), followed by central nervous system (n=40, 10.8%), respiratory (n=40, 10.8%), and breast (n=40, 10.8%). These patients tended to be older than non-CA-CVT and were more likely to have coexisting comorbidities. CA-CVT patients had higher severity scores on the International Study of Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis Risk Score (ISCVT-RS) and increased complications. In a propensity-score matched cohort, there were no differences in inpatient outcomes. Malignancy occurs in 6% of patients presenting with CVT and should be considered a potential comorbidity in instances where clear causes of hypercoagulabilty have not been identified. Malignancy was linked to higher mortality rates. Nonetheless, after adjusting for the severity of CVT, the outcomes for inpatients with cancer-associated CVT were comparable to those without cancer, indicating that the increased mortality associated with malignancy is probably due to more severe CVT conditions.

D-Dimer post-COVID19 in Karbala governorate, Iraq

After the Coronavirus epidemic, there are indications that a significant number of COVID-19 survivors experience long-term respiratory, cardiovascular, and psychological issues, necessitating the assessment of these complications for effective healthcare resource allocation. The test can help identify blood clotting problems. A positive result may suggest a blood clot has recently formed and broken down. In our study, the post-covid-19 d-dimer concentration was measured, and three groups were taken for each of males and females, with a total of 30 samples. The first group are those infected once with Covid-19 and then recovered included (5) males and (5) females, and the highest concentration found in the sample (10) was 211.2 μg FEU/ml in females, it within normal limits (500 μg FEU/ml). The second group are those hits twice with Covid-19 and then recovered, it consisted from 10 samples (5 males, 5 females). The highest concentration in sample (20) was 350.62 μg FEU/ml and it has short period between hits, also was the short period between hits higher concentration from long period between hits. In the last group, those hits three times with Covid-19, then recovered, included (10) samples (5 males, 5 females), maximum concentration in sample (30) was 386.7 μg FEU/ml, it has the short period between hits. In three group was d-dimer concentration higher in females from males, and in short period between hits higher long period. The factor can increase d-dimer age, Gender, diseases, treatment, pregnancy, trauma and the vaccine to covid-19

Adhesive and cohesive fracture of blood clots: Experiments and modeling

Blood clots represent living materials composed of a polymer network and an abundance of cells. They might fracture within the bulk material of the clot (cohesive fracture), at the interface between the clot and the surrounding tissue (adhesive fracture), or through a combination of both modes (hybrid fracture). The clot fracture within vascular systems and injury sites could lead to life-threatening conditions. Despite the significance, understanding and modeling the fracture behaviors of blood clots, including their dependence on mechanical loading and cellular components, remain in a nascent stage. In this study, we employ an integrated experimental-computational approach to comprehensively investigate the fracture behaviors of bovine blood clots. We explore various mechanical factors, substrates, and cellular components such as red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. Our findings reveal that among various tissue substrates, blood clots exhibit the highest interfacial adhesion energy with muscle, and the lowest to the inner arterial lining, consistent with their biological function. Both interfacial adhesion energy and bulk fracture energy are rate-dependent, although they exhibit different dependencies. Also, RBCs and platelets have different effects on clot fracture. An increase in RBC content tends to toughen both adhesion and fracture of blood clots. However, an increase in platelet content enhances interfacial adhesion energy but lowers the bulk fracture energy. The platelet content also governs the shift from adhesive fracture to hybrid fracture. To model clot fracture, we developed two finite element models incorporating a coupled cohesive-zone and Mullins-effect approach to simulate pure shear fracture and peeling of blood clots. These models, validated through experimental data, elucidate the interplay between intrinsic fracture toughness, interfacial strength, and bulk energy dissipation during clot fracture. This study significantly advances our understanding of clot mechanics, providing valuable insights into the mechanics of similar living materials and the management of clot-related disorders such as hemorrhage and thrombosis.

The quantified method for blood clot detection in the extraction socket

Background Currently, there is no objective and quantified measurement for detecting blood clots during extraction socket hemostasis. It has relied solely on clinical observation, even when conducting clinical research by using extraction sockets as samples. This study aimed to assess the in vitro reliability and clinical-relevant validity of a new objective measurement providing quantified data called blood clot detection (BCD) using a standard capillary tube. Methods The in vitro part of the study was conducted using surplus blood samples from ten healthy participants. Two identical sets of blood samples in simulation reservoirs mimicking bleeding sockets were prepared for reliability tests. Then, the capillary tubes were concurrently placed in the reservoirs. The blood-filled distances were measured. The part of clinical-relevant validity study was conducted in sixteen extraction sockets from each healthy participant. Clinical observation and BCD measurement were evaluated by two calibrated assessors. The total duration of the assessment was a 30-minute. Results The distances of the blood-filled capillary tube were decreased by time. Test and retest reliability analysis of the BCD measurement showed an excellent intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.980 (0.968 to 0.988). The medians of blood-filled distance categorized by clinical observation into active bleeding, sluggish oozing, and clot formation were 13.0 mm (Q1 = 11.7, Q3 = 13.8), 5.6 mm (Q1 = 4.3, Q3 = 7.0), and 0.9 mm (Q1 = 0.5, Q3 = 1.3), respectively. The blood-filled distance of the clot formation group was significantly less than the active bleeding and sluggish oozing (p<0.001). Therefore, the BCD measurement also significantly indicated the completion of extraction socket hemostasis Conclusions A distance of blood-filled in capillary tube of 0.9 mm from the BCD measurement significantly ensured complete clot formation. The BCD measurement proved to be a quantified tool for objectively measuring hemostasis of bleeding socket.

Minimally Invasive Surgery: A Paradigm Shift in Surgical Procedures

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and microsurgery have significantly transformed periodontal treatment by reducing tissue trauma and improving patient outcomes. MIS focuses on minimizing flap reflection and tissue manipulation, preserving blood supply, and ensuring the stability of blood clots at the wound site, which collectively reduce postoperative complications such as shrinkage and discomfort. Microsurgery, enabled by advancements in surgical microscopes, enhances visual acuity and allows for precise surgical interventions. In periodontology, the integration of MIS and microsurgery has led to refined surgical techniques that prioritize minimal tissue disruption, passive wound closure, and the use of specialized microsurgical instruments. These approaches offer significant advantages over conventional flap surgeries, which were often associated with extensive tissue damage, prolonged healing times, and aesthetic compromises. The evolution of MIS in periodontology represents a shift from resection-based procedures to those focused on regeneration, emphasizing the importance of skill enhancement and the adoption of advanced technologies. As MIS techniques continue to develop, they hold the potential to become the standard of care, providing patients with effective, less invasive treatment options that result in better clinical and aesthetic outcomes. The current article's goal was to gather and record different minimally invasive periodontology techniques. Peer-reviewed materials from journals, Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, and other reviews served as the foundation for the research.

Sonothrombolysis Using Microfluidically Produced Microbubbles in a Murine Model of Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The need for safe and effective methods to manage deep vein thrombosis (DVT), given the risks associated with anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents, motivated research into innovative approaches to resolve blood clots. In response to this challenge, sonothrombolysis is being explored as a technique that combines microbubbles, ultrasound, and thrombolytic agents to facilitate the aggressive dissolution of thrombi. Prior studies have indicated that relatively large microbubbles accelerate the dissolution process, either in an in vitro or an arterial model. However, sonothrombolysis using large microbubbles must be evaluated in venous thromboembolism diseases, where blood flow velocity is not comparable. In this study, the efficacy of sonothrombolysis was validated in a murine model of pre-existing DVT. During therapy, microfluidically produced microbubbles of 18 μm diameter and recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) were administered through a tail vein catheter for 30min, while ultrasound was applied to the abdominal region of the mice. Three-dimensional ultrasound scans were performed before and after therapy for quantification. The residual volume of the thrombi was 20% in animals post sonothrombolysis versus 52% without therapy ( ), indicating a significant reduction in DVT volume. Histological analysis of tissue sections confirmed a reduction in DVT volume post-therapy. Therefore, large microbubbles generated from a microfluidic device show promise in ultrasound-assisted therapy to address concerns related to venous thromboembolism.

Structure, Properties and Degradation of Self-Assembled Fibrinogen Nanofiber Scaffolds.

Self-assembled fibrinogen nanofibers are promising candidates for skin tissue engineering due to their biocompatibility and ability to mimic the native blood clot architecture. Here, we studied the structure-property relationship and degradation of rehydrated fibrinogen nanofibers prepared by salt-induced self-assembly, focusing on the effect of scaffold layering, cross-linking time and freeze-drying. Optimal fiber stability was achieved with cross-linking by formaldehyde (FA) vapor, while treatment with liquid aldehydes, genipin, EDC, and transglutaminase failed to preserve the nanofibrous architecture upon rehydration. Scaffold layering did not significantly influence the mechanical properties but changed the scaffold architecture, with bulk fiber scaffolds being more compact than layered scaffolds. Freeze-drying maintained the mechanical properties and interconnected pore network with average pore diameters around 20 μm, which will enhance the storage stability of self-assembled fibrinogen scaffolds. Varying cross-linking times altered the scaffold mechanics without affecting the swelling behavior, indicating that scaffold hydration can be controlled independently of the mechanical characteristics. Cross-linking times of 240 min increased scaffold stiffness and decreased elongation, while 30 min resulted in mechanical properties similar to native skin. Cross-linking for 120 min was found to reduce scaffold degradation by various enzymes in comparison to 60 min. Overall, after 35 days of incubation, plasmin and a combination of urokinase and plasminogen exhibited the strongest degradative effect, with nanofibers being more susceptible to enzymatic degradation than planar fibrinogen due to their higher specific surface area. Based on these results, self-assembled fibrinogen fiber scaffolds show great potential for future applications in soft tissue engineering that require controlled structure-function relationships and degradation characteristics.

Efficacy and safety of autologous whole blood clot in diabetic foot ulcers: a randomised controlled trial.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) present a significant global health challenge, resulting in high morbidity and economic costs. Current available treatments often fail to achieve satisfactory healing rates, highlighting the need for novel therapies. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel autologous whole blood clot (AWBC)-a blood-based, biodegradable provisional matrix-in conjunction with standard of care (SoC) when compared to SoC alone in the treatment of hard-to-heal DFUs. A multicentre, prospective, blinded assessor, randomised controlled trial was conducted at 16 sites across the US, South Africa and Turkey. A cohort of patients with hard-to-heal DFUs was enrolled and randomised to either the AWBC group or the control group. The primary endpoint was complete wound closure at 12 weeks, while secondary endpoints included time to heal and percentage area reduction (PAR) at four and eight weeks. Data were analysed using both intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) populations. The cohort included 119 patients. AWBC treatment resulted in a significantly higher healing rate compared to the control in both ITT (41% versus 15%, respectively; p=0.002) and PP populations (51% versus 18%, respectively; p=0.0075). AWBC treatment also resulted in a shorter mean time to heal and higher durability of wound closure. Safety analysis showed a similar incidence of adverse events (AEs) between groups, with no device-related AEs. The AWBC system, by modulating the wound microenvironment and providing a functional extracellular matrix, offered a promising new approach to treating hard-to-heal DFUs, demonstrating superior healing outcomes compared to SoC alone in this study.

OCT-based comparative evaluation of culprit lesion morphology in very young versus older adult patients with STEMI.

The clinical and pathophysiological characteristics of coronary artery disease in very young adults are poorly described. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT), we compared culprit lesion morphology in very young adult patients (≤35 years) versus older adult patients (>60 years) with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Culprit lesion morphology was classified as plaque rupture, plaque erosion, or calcified nodule. Thrombus age was subclassified into acute (intraluminal thrombus with surface irregularity) or subacute (mostly mural thrombus with a smooth surface). A total of 61 patients who underwent thrombolysis within 24 hours from symptom onset were included, with 38 (59.7%) subjects ≤35 years and 23 (40.3%) subjects >60 years of age. As an underlying mechanism of STEMI thrombosis, plaque erosion was more common in very young patients (52.6% vs 21.7%; p=0.02) while plaque rupture was more common in elderly patients (65.2% vs 36.8%; p=0.03). Acute or subacute thrombus was identified in 68.9% (42/61) of patients, with red thrombus being more frequent in very young patients. In the entire patient cohort, acute thrombus was more frequent in plaque rupture compared with plaque erosion (62.0% vs 28.0%; p=0.01), whereas subacute thrombus was more common in plaque erosion versus plaque rupture (52.0% vs 10.3%; p=0.0008). OCT showed that plaque erosion and plaque rupture were the most common underlying STEMI mechanisms in very young patients and older patients, respectively, and that subjects with plaque erosion had greater evidence of subacute thrombus.

Two-phase magnetohydrodynamic blood flow through curved porous artery

Blood arteries are important part of our cardiovascular system. A comprehensive study of shape and anatomy of blood arteries allows to elucidate the dynamics of blood flow in these arteries. Typically, the arteries are a curved-tube like structure, with arterial walls exhibiting a composition of various porous layers. The current study embarks on a theoretical exploration of a two-fluid model of blood flow and heat transfer through the curved artery under an influence of a magnetic field. The artery walls are composed of Brinkman and Darcy layers. The blood flows through a curved artery exerts centrifugal forces on the arterial walls that leads to change the blood flow patterns. The significant effects of curvature along with the intensity of an applied magnetic field on the blood flow patterns, heat transfer, and resistance impedance in curved artery have been investigated in the present work. The mathematical model of the proposed work is tackled by the homotopy analysis method using physically relevant boundary and interface conditions. The significant outcome of the present work is that the heat transfer rate increases with the increase in the curvature parameter, and it reduces on raising the couple stress parameter and Hartmann number. The novelty of this work lies in the consideration blood flow and heat transfer in inner endothelial layers of curved porous artery. The result presented in this work is vital to assess the condition of atherosclerosis, aneurysms, vasculties, blood clot, etc.; beyond this, the present model can be extended for medical diagnostics, treatment planning, medical device design, drug delivery optimization, and biomedical engineering research. This study can ultimately contribute for improved patient care and outcomes in cardiovascular medicine.

Janus Amphipathic Dressing With Liquid Self-Pumping and Blood-Clot Anti-Adhesion for Satisfactory Hemostasis.

Ideal hemostatic materials for the emergency rescue of war and traffic accident sufferers are essential to significantly control hemorrhage, reduce patient discomfort, and improve the survival ratio. However, most hemostats absorb blood quickly in contact with the wound; and then, adhere to blood clots, resulting in breaking scabs and tearing the wound when the materials are removed. Herein, an effective Janus amphipathic hemostatic dressing (Fiber@Gel/Ca2+/KL) with a fiber layer (polylactic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan) and a hydrogel layer (polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl chitosan, Ca2+, and kaolin) is reported. Such a composite dressing unidirectionally drains the excessive serum from its hydrophobic side (fiber layer) to its hydrophilic side (hydrogel layer), so-called self-pumping, thereby further concentrating coagulated factors (including red blood cells and platelets). Further, Ca2+ diffused from the hydrogel layer subsequently activates platelets and coagulation cascade. Besides, the Fiber@Gel/Ca2+/KL exhibits specific blood-clot anti-adhesion property on the fiber layer, making the dressing easily and safely peel off from the wound. It is believed that this novel hemostatic dressing with good hemostatic performance, easy clots removal, and excellent biocompatibility is expected to be used as a safe and efficient hemostatic dressing in clinical applications.

Salvaging intraluminal peritoneal dialysis catheter obstruction from blood clot with a targeted thrombolytic agent: an innovation.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter malfunction commonly leads to the removal of the catheter and eventually to a transfer to hemodialysis. The most common cause is intraluminal obstruction caused by blood and fibrin clots. Recommended interventions include irrigation of the catheter with heparinized saline; if this method fails, thrombolytic agents may be used. Mechanical methods such as intraluminal brushing are also utilized, typically after medical treatment fails. Here, we present a case of a patient who developed an intraluminal blood clot that persisted despite attempts with intraluminal thrombolytic drugs and intraluminal brushing. To salvage the catheter, targeted thrombolysis was performed using an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) guidewire to reinforce the coiled PD catheter and puncture the clots. Additionally, a Swing Tip cannula was employed for direct injection of the thrombolytic agent. These interventions successfully preserved the catheter, resolving the clot and ensuring continued functionality.

A dendritic cell-recruiting, antimicrobial blood clot hydrogel for melanoma recurrence prevention and infected wound management

Surgical resection, the mainstay for melanoma treatment, faces challenges due to high tumor recurrence rates and complex postoperative wound healing. Chronic inflammation from residual disease and the risk of secondary infections impede healing. We introduce an innovative, injectable hydrogel system that integrates a multifaceted therapeutic approach. The hydrogel, crosslinked by calcium ions with sodium alginate, encapsulates a blood clot rich in dendritic cells (DCs) chemoattractants and melanoma cell-derived nanovesicles (NVs), functioning as a potent immunostimulant. This in situ recruitment strategy overcomes the limitations of subcutaneous tumor vaccine injections and more effectively achieves antitumor immunity. Additionally, the hydrogel incorporates Chlorella extracts, enhancing its antimicrobial properties to prevent wound infections and promote healing. One of the key findings of our research is the dual functionality of Chlorella extracts; they not only expedite the healing process of infected wounds but also increase the hydrogel's ability to stimulate an antitumor immune response. Given the patient-specific nature of the blood clot and NVs, our hydrogel system offers customizable solutions for individual postoperative requirements. This personalized approach is highlighted by our study, which demonstrates the synergistic impact of the composite hydrogel on preventing melanoma recurrence and hastening wound healing, potentially transforming postsurgical melanoma management.

Short segment linear "flaps" of the abdominal aorta: proposed mechanism of origin and evaluation of natural history via retrospective imaging review.

Luminal linear findings (LLF) of the abdominal aorta are often called aortic "flaps," triggering concern for acute aortic syndrome. However, these "flaps" are unlikely to represent intimomedial dissection given isolation to the abdominal aorta, short length, and incidental discovery. We aim to characterize the etiology and stability of LLF. CT reports finalized January 2021-December 2022 were queried for terms "focal dissection," "dissection flap," "linear filling defect," and "linear flap." Patients were excluded for thoracoabdominal dissection, LLF in non-aortic vessel, no prior contrast-enhanced imaging, and less than 6months between exams. Index exam reviewed for presence of LLF, atherosclerosis, and aortic caliber at LLF site. Prior exam assessed for aortic caliber and aortic findings at subsequent LLF site. Patients with unchanged LLF between exams were categorized "Stable" and patients with interval change "Dynamic." Seven hundred and two cases identified. After exclusions, imaging from 70 patients reviewed; 1 excluded for no LLF. Stable Cohort of 39 patients had median follow-up 31months (range 6-284 months). 87% of aortas were moderately/severely atherosclerotic (n = 16 moderate, n = 18 severe), while 69% were ectatic/aneurysmal (n = 27). Dynamic Cohort of 20 patients had median follow-up of 70months (range 14-244months). All were atherosclerotic and 80% were ectatic/aneurysmal compared to 25% ectatic/aneurysmal at prior imaging. Mural thrombus was present at the site of the future LLF in 17 of 20, thrombosed PAU in 1, and no focal findings in 2. Short-segment LLFs within the abdominal aorta arise from prior mural thrombus and demonstrate long term stability. Clinically and radiographically indolent, LLFs should not be called dissection flaps.

Poly (β-amino esters)/Mobil Composition of Matter 41-mediated delivery of siIL-1β alleviates deep vein thrombosis in rat hind limbs.

Introduction: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major cause of cardiovascular disease-related deaths worldwide and is considered a thrombotic inflammatory disorder. IL-1β, as a key promoter of venous thrombus inflammation, is a potential target for DVT treatment. Constructing a nanocarrier system for intracellular delivery of siIL-1β to silence IL-1β may be an effective strategy for alleviating DVT. Methods: ELISA was used to detect the expression levels of IL-1β and t-PA in the serum of DVT patients and healthy individuals. In vitro, HUVEC cells were treated with IL-1β, and changes in VWF and t-PA expression levels were assessed. PBAE/MCM-41@siIL-1β (PM@siIL-1β) nano-complexes were synthesized, the characterization and biocompatibility of PM@siIL-1β were evaluated. A rat hind limb DVT model was established, and PM@siIL-1β was used to treat DVT rats. Morphology of the inferior vena cava, endothelial cell count, IL-1β, vWF, and t-PA levels, as well as changes in the p38 MAPK and NF-κB pathways, were examined in the different groups. Results: IL-1β and t-PA were highly expressed in DVT patients, and IL-1β treatment induced a decrease in VWF levels and an increase in t-PA levels in HUVEC cells. The synthesized PM@siIL-1β exhibited spherical shape, good stability, high encapsulation efficiency, and high drug loading capacity, with excellent biocompatibility. In the DVT model rats, the inferior vena cava was filled with blood clots, endothelial cells increased, IL-1β and VWF levels significantly increased, while t-PA levels were significantly downregulated. Treatment with PM@siIL-1β resulted in reduced thrombus formation, decreased endothelial cell count, and reversal of IL-1β, VWF, and t-PA levels. Furthermore, PM@siIL-1β treatment significantly inhibited p38 phosphorylation and upregulation of NF-κB expression in the DVT model group. Conclusion: IL-1β can be considered a therapeutic target for suppressing DVT inflammation. The synthesized PM@siIL-1β achieved efficient delivery and gene silencing of siIL-1β, demonstrating good therapeutic effects on rat hind limb DVT, including anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects, potentially mediated through the p38 MAPK and NF-κB pathways.

Traditionally, these reports have been delivered through paper-based methods, which often face significant challenges such as human errors, delays in distribution, and limited accessibility. To address these issues, this preliminary investigation explores integrating technology into the reporting process for coagulation profiles. By leveraging a design-thinking approach, the study aims to understand the needs and preferences of stakeholders and users. This approach includes creating personas to represent different user types, mapping their experiences through empathy and journey maps, and generating and testing ideas through ideation and prototyping. The core objective of the study is to develop a mobile application that simplifies and enhances the reporting process of coagulation profiles. This application is designed to integrate seamlessly with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, providing real-time notifications to healthcare providers when laboratory results are available. The proposed solution aims to improve the timeliness and accuracy of reporting, facilitating better patient care and more efficient workflows. The paper details the components of this solution, including the prototype design and the validation procedures used to ensure its effectiveness. The study seeks to revolutionize how coagulation profiles are documented and communicated in healthcare by adopting a digital reporting system.

How well do 3D-printed tissue mimics represent the complex mechanics of biological soft tissues? An example study with Stratasys' cardiovascular TissueMatrix materials.

Tissue mimicking materials are designed to represent real tissue in applications such as medical device testing and surgical training. Thanks to progress in 3D-printing technology, tissue mimics can now be easily cast into arbitrary geometries and manufactured with adjustable material properties to mimic a wide variety of tissue types. However, it is unclear how well 3D-printable mimics represent real tissues and their mechanics. The objective of this work is to fill this knowledge gap using the Stratasys Digital Anatomy 3D-Printer as an example. To this end, we created mimics of biological tissues we previously tested in our laboratory: blood clots, myocardium, and tricuspid valve leaflets. We printed each tissue mimic to have the identical geometry to its biological counterpart and tested the samples using identical protocols. In our evaluation, we focused on the stiffness of the tissues and their fracture toughness in the case of blood clots. We found that the mechanical behavior of the tissue mimics often differed substantially from the biological tissues they aim to represent. Qualitatively, tissue mimics failed to replicate the traditional strain-stiffening behavior of soft tissues. Quantitatively, tissue mimics were stiffer than their biological counterparts, especially at small strains, in some cases by orders of magnitude. In those materials in which we tested toughness, we found that tissue mimicking materials were also much tougher than their biological counterparts. Thus, our work highlights limitations of at least one 3D-printing technology in its ability to mimic the mechanical properties of biological tissues. Therefore, care should be taken when using this technology, especially where tissue mimicking materials are expected to represent soft tissue properties quantitatively. Whether other technologies fare better remains to be seen.
