Divergent pattern of functional connectivity within the dorsal attention network differentiates schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients.

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) share common clinical features, symptoms, and neurocognitive deficits, which results in common misdiagnosis. Recently, it has been suggested that alterations within brain networks associated with perceptual organization yield potential to distinguish SZ and BD individuals. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether functional connectivity (FC) of the dorsal attention network (DAN) may differentiate both conditions. The study involved 90 participants: 30 remitted SZ patients, 30 euthymic BD patients, and 30 healthy controls (HC). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare the groups in terms of the FC within the core nodes of the DAN involving frontal eye fields (FEF) and intraparietal sulcus (IPS). BD patients presented weaker inter-hemispheric FC between right and left FEF than HC. While SZ did not differ from HC in terms of inter-FEF connectivity, they presented increased inter- and intra-hemispheric FC between FEF and IPS. When compared with BD, SZ patients showed increased FC between right FEF and other nodes of the network (bilateral IPS and left FEF). We have shown that altered resting state FC within DAN differentiates BD, SZ, and HC groups. Divergent pattern of FC within DAN, consisting of hypoconnectivity in BD and hyperconnectivity in SZ, might yield a candidate biomarker for differential diagnosis between both conditions. More highly powered studies are needed to confirm these possibilities.

Distinct Neural Plasticity Enhancing Visual Perception.

The developed human brain shows remarkable plasticity following perceptual learning, resulting in improved visual sensitivity. However, such improvements commonly require extensive stimuli exposure. Here we show that efficiently enhancing visual perception with minimal stimuli exposure recruits distinct neural mechanisms relative to standard repetition-based learning. Participants (n = 20, 12 women, 8 men) encoded a visual discrimination task, followed by brief memory reactivations of only five trials each performed on separate days, demonstrating improvements comparable with standard repetition-based learning (n = 20, 12 women, 8 men). Reactivation-induced learning engaged increased bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) activity relative to repetition-based learning. Complementary evidence for differential learning processes was further provided by temporal-parietal resting functional connectivity changes, which correlated with behavioral improvements. The results suggest that efficiently enhancing visual perception with minimal stimuli exposure recruits distinct neural processes, engaging higher-order control and attentional resources while leading to similar perceptual gains. These unique brain mechanisms underlying improved perceptual learning efficiency may have important implications for daily life and in clinical conditions requiring relearning following brain damage.

Arithmetic in two languages: Localizing simple multiplication processing in the adult bilingual brain.

Verbally memorized multiplication tables are thought to create language-specific memories. Supporting this idea, bilinguals are typically faster and more accurate in the language in which they learned math (LA+) than in their other language (LA- ) . No study has yet revealed the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms explaining this effect, or the role of problem size in explaining the recruitment of different brain regions in LA+ and LA- . To fill this gap in the literature, 29 Spanish-English early bilingual adults, proficient in both languages, verified simple multiplication problems in each language while functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was acquired. More specifically, this study aimed to answer two questions: 1) Does LA+ recruit left superior and middle temporal gyri (STG/MTG) to a greater extent than LA- , reflecting more robust verbal representations of multiplication facts in LA+? In contrast, does LA- recruit the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), reflecting more effortful retrieval, or the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), reflecting reliance on quantity processes? 2) Is there an interaction between language and problem size, where language differences are more pronounced for less practiced, large multiplication problems (e.g., 8 × 9) in comparison to more familiar, small problems (e.g., 2 × 3). Functional localizer tasks were used to identify hypothesis-driven regions of interest in verbal areas associated with verbal representations of arithmetic facts (left STG/MTG) and with the effortful retrieval of these facts (left IFG) and quantity areas engaged when calculation-based strategies are used (bilateral IPS). In planned analyses, no cluster reached significance for the direct comparison of languages (question 1) or for the interaction between language and problem size (question 2). An exploratory analysis found a main effect of problem size, where small problems recruited left STG/MTG and left IFG to a greater extent than large problems, suggesting greater verbal involvement for these problems in both languages. Additionally, large problems recruited right IPS to a greater extent than small problems, suggesting reliance on quantity processes. Our results suggest that proficient early bilingual adults engage similar brain regions in both languages, even for more difficult, large problems.

Contrasting neurofunctional correlates of face- and visuospatial-processing in children and adolescents with Williams syndrome: convergent results from four fMRI paradigms

Understanding neurogenetic mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism is complicated by their inherent clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Williams syndrome (WS), a rare neurodevelopmental condition in which both the genetic alteration (hemideletion of ~ twenty-six 7q11.23 genes) and the cognitive/behavioral profile are well-defined, offers an invaluable opportunity to delineate gene-brain-behavior relationships. People with WS are characterized by increased social drive, including particular interest in faces, together with hallmark difficulty in visuospatial processing. Prior work, primarily in adults with WS, has searched for neural correlates of these characteristics, with reports of altered fusiform gyrus function while viewing socioemotional stimuli such as faces, along with hypoactivation of the intraparietal sulcus during visuospatial processing. Here, we investigated neural function in children and adolescents with WS by using four separate fMRI paradigms, two that probe each of these two cognitive/behavioral domains. During the two visuospatial tasks, but not during the two face processing tasks, we found bilateral intraparietal sulcus hypoactivation in WS. In contrast, during both face processing tasks, but not during the visuospatial tasks, we found fusiform hyperactivation. These data not only demonstrate that previous findings in adults with WS are also present in childhood and adolescence, but also provide a clear example that genetic mechanisms can bias neural circuit function, thereby affecting behavioral traits.

48 Should I Stay or Should I Go? Neural Circuits Underlying Decisions to Explore or Exploit

Objective:Adaptive decision-making is necessary to sustain functional independence. Maladaptive decisions are among the most prevalent features of psychological and neurological disorders. One crucial aspect of decision-making involves arbitrating between exploring new avenues with risky but potentially lucrative outcomes or exploiting prior knowledge and endorsing predictable outcomes. Balancing this dichotomy creates a behavioral tension that shapes all decisions and is termed the exploration-exploitation trade-off. This trade-off has been linked to reward and affective drives and associated neural circuitry as well as neuropsychological dysfunction. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the exploration-exploitation trade-off are still uncertain, due to the scarcity of literature and the heterogeneity of paradigms. This study aimed to systematically quantify and disambiguate neuroanatomical correlates of the exploration-exploitation tradeoff in a normative adult sample. These findings provide a necessary starting point for future investigations of this fundamental aspect of decision-making across clinical populations, with potential implications for assessment and intervention.Participants and Methods:We used the effect-location method of meta-analysis to analyze data from 10 functional neuroimaging studies investigating the exploration-exploitation tradeoff in non-clinical samples. We analyzed the location and frequency of significant neural activations across studies for both explorative and exploitative decisions and characterized them as core and non-core regions. Core activations were defined as those reported in over 50% of studies. Secondary and tertiary activations were defined as those reported in 40% and 30% of studies, respectively. The present review was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the 2009 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement.Results:The results revealed that explorative and exploitative choice behaviours differed markedly with respect to associated patterns of task-related brain activity. Exploration was associated with activity in brain regions implicated in externally directed, goal-based attentional processing and reward-related uncertainty, mainly tapping bilateral parietal and frontal circuitry, with relatively high consistency across studies. A core explorative network was revealed, consisting of activity in the frontal polar cortex, the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, the bilateral medial frontal gyrus, the bilateral precuneus, and the bilateral intraparietal sulcus. Secondary and tertiary regions were also detected, including the bilateral anterior insula, the left precentral gyrus, the bilateral superior frontal gyrus, the right inferior frontal gyrus, the left supplementary motor area, the bilateral superior parietal lobule, and the bilateral thalamus. Exploitation was associated with brain regions implicated in internally directed processes including reward valuation, motivation, and memory. Core exploitative activations included the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex, and the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex. Secondary and tertiary activations included the bilateral hippocampus, the left middle temporal gyrus, the bilateral angular gyrus, the left posterior cingulate cortex, the left superior frontal gyrus, and the bilateral superior temporal gyrus.Conclusions:The exploration-exploitation trade-off provides a novel paradigmatic approach to study adaptive and maladaptive decision-making behaviour in humans. Our findings support the neural dichotomization of exploration and exploitation and illuminate potential neural networks underlying this fundamental feature of decision-making. Understanding these mechanistic networks opens a new avenue of inquiry into decision-making deficits in clinical populations, including neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric syndromes.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation over multiple brain areas with non-zero phase delays other than 180 degrees modulates visuospatial working memory performance

While zero-phase lag synchronization between multiple brain regions has been widely observed, relatively recent reports indicate that systematic phase delays between cortical regions reflect the direction of communications between cortical regions. For example, it has been suggested that a non-zero phase delay of electroencephalography (EEG) signals at the gamma frequency band between the bilateral parietal areas may reflect the direction of communication between these areas. We hypothesized that the direction of communication between distant brain areas might be modulated by multi-site transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with specific phase delays other than 0° and 180°. In this study, a new noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) method called multi-site multi-phase tACS (msmp-tACS) was proposed. The efficacy of the proposed method was tested in a case study using a visuospatial working memory (VWM) paradigm in which the optimal stimulation conditions including amplitudes and phases of multiple scalp electrodes were determined using finite element analysis adopting phasor representation. msmp-tACS was applied over the bilateral intraparietal sulci (IPS) and showed that 80 Hz tACS with the phase for the right IPS leading that for the left IPS by 90° (= 3.125 ms) partialized VWM performance toward the right visual hemifield. The three stimulation conditions were synchronized, RL, and LR, which refers to stimulation condition with no phase lag, stimulation phase of right IPS (rIPS) leading left IPS (lIPS) by 90° and the stimulation of lIPS leading rIPS by 90°, respectively. The lateralization of VWM significantly shifted towards right visual hemifield under the RL condition compared to the synchronized and LR conditions. The shift in VWM was the result of the stimulation affecting both left and right visual hemifield trials to certain degrees, rather than significantly increasing or decreasing VWM capacity of a specific visual hemifield. Altered brain dynamics caused by msmp-tACS partialized VWM performance, likely due to modulation of effective connectivity between the rIPS and lIPS. Our results suggest that msmp-tACS is a promising NBS method that can effectively modulate cortical networks that cannot be readily modulated with conventional multi-site stimulation methods.

A new perspective on the role of the frontoparietal regions in Stroop-like conflicts.

Humans are goal-directed; however, goal-unrelated information still affects us, but how? The Stroop task is often used to answer this question, relying on conflict (incongruency) between attributes, one targeted by the task and another irrelevant to the task. The frontal regions of the brain are known to play a crucial role in processing such conflict, as they show increased activity when we encounter incongruent stimuli. Notably, the Stroop stimuli also consist of conceptual dimensions, such as semantic or emotional content, that are independent of the attributes that define the conflict. Since the non-targeted attribute usually refers to the same conceptual dimension as the targeted-attribute, it is relevant to the task at hand. For example, when naming the emotion of an emotional face superimposed by an emotional word, both the targeted-attribute and the non-targeted attribute refer to the conceptual dimension "emotion". We designed an fMRI paradigm to investigate how conflicts between different conceptual dimensions impact us. Even though the conflict was task-irrelevant, incongruent stimuli resulted in longer reaction times, indicating a behavioral congruency effect. When examining the neural mechanisms that underlie this effect, we found that the frontal regions exhibited repetition suppression, while the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) showed a congruency effect linked to the behavioral effect. Taken together, these findings suggest that individuals are unable to completely ignore task-irrelevant information, and that the IPS plays a crucial role in processing such information.

Classical and non-classical psychedelic drugs induce common network changes in human cortex

The neurobiology of the psychedelic experience is not fully understood. Identifying common brain network changes induced by both classical (i.e., acting at the 5-HT2 receptor) and non-classical psychedelics would provide mechanistic insight into state-specific characteristics. We analyzed whole-brain functional connectivity based on resting-state fMRI data in humans, acquired before and during the administration of nitrous oxide, ketamine, and lysergic acid diethylamide. We report that, despite distinct molecular mechanisms and modes of delivery, all three psychedelics reduced within-network functional connectivity and enhanced between-network functional connectivity. More specifically, all three drugs increased connectivity between right temporoparietal junction and bilateral intraparietal sulcus as well as between precuneus and left intraparietal sulcus. These regions fall within the posterior cortical “hot zone,” posited to mediate the qualitative aspects of experience. Thus, both classical and non-classical psychedelics modulate networks within an area of known relevance for consciousness, identifying a biologically plausible candidate for their subjective effects.

Supramodal Representation of the Sense of Body Ownership in the Human Parieto-Premotor and Extrastriate Cortices.

The sense of body ownership, defined as the sensation that one's body belongs to oneself, is a fundamental component of bodily self-consciousness. Several studies have shown the importance of multisensory integration for the emergence of the sense of body ownership, together with the involvement of the parieto-premotor and extrastriate cortices in bodily awareness. However, whether the sense of body ownership elicited by different sources of signal, especially visuotactile and visuomotor inputs, is represented by common neural patterns remains to be elucidated. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the existence of neural correlates of the sense of body ownership independent of the sensory modalities. Participants received tactile stimulation or executed finger movements while given synchronous and asynchronous visual feedback of their hand. We used multivoxel patterns analysis (MVPA) to decode the synchronous and asynchronous conditions with cross-classification between two modalities: the classifier was first trained in the visuotactile sessions and then tested in the visuomotor sessions, and vice versa. Regions of interest (ROIs)-based and searchlight analyses revealed significant above-chance cross-classification accuracies in the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS), the bilateral ventral premotor cortex (PMv), and the left extrastriate body area (EBA). Moreover, we observed a significant positive correlation between the cross-classification accuracy in the left PMv and the difference in subjective ratings of the sense of body ownership between the synchronous and asynchronous conditions. Our findings revealed the neural representations of the sense of body ownership in the IPS, PMv, and EBA that is invariant to the sensory modalities.

Neural substrates in patients with visual-spatial neglect recovering from right-hemispheric stroke.

Visual-spatial attention disorder after stroke seriously affects recovery and quality of life in stroke patients. Previous studies have shown that some patients recovery rapidly from visual-spatial neglect (VSN), but the brain networks underlying this recovery are not well understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we aimed to identify network differences between patients who rapidly recovered from VSN and those with persistent VSN. The study included 30 patients with VSN who suffered subacute stroke. Patients were examined 2-4 weeks after stroke onset and 4 weeks after the initial assessment. At the last evaluation, patients in the persistent VSN (n = 15) and rapid recovery (n = 15) groups underwent paper-and-pencil tests. We defined the bilateral frontal eye fields, bilateral intraparietal sulcus in the dorsal attention network, and right temporoparietal junction and ventral frontal cortex areas in the ventral attention network as regions of interest (ROI) and measured whole-brain ROI-based functional connectivity (FC) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in subacute right-hemisphere stroke patients. VSN recovery was associated with changes in the activation of multiple bilateral attentional brain regions. Specifically, persistent VSN was associated with lower FC in the right superior frontal gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, right medial orbitofrontal cortex, left precuneus, right inferior parietal gyrus, right medial frontal gyrus, right rectus gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, left middle cingulate gyrus, right superior temporal pole, right postcentral gyrus, and right posterior cingulate gyrus compared to that in those with rapid recovery, whereas ALFF in the left cerebellum were decreased in patients with persistent VSN. Our results demonstrate that the DAN rather than the VAN, plays a more important role in recovery from VSN, and that the cerebellum is involved in recovery. We believe that our results supplement those of previous studies on recovery from VSN.

Resting-State Functional Connectivity in the Dorsal Attention Network Relates to Behavioral Performance in Spatial Attention Tasks and May Show Task-Related Adaptation.

Between-subject variability in cognitive performance has been related to inter-individual differences in functional brain networks. Targeting the dorsal attention network (DAN) we questioned (i) whether resting-state functional connectivity (FC) within the DAN can predict individual performance in spatial attention tasks and (ii) whether there is short-term adaptation of DAN-FC in response to task engagement. Twenty-seven participants first underwent resting-state fMRI (PRE run), they subsequently performed different tasks of spatial attention [including visual search (VS)] and immediately afterwards received another rs-fMRI (POST run). Intra- and inter-hemispheric FC between core hubs of the DAN, bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and frontal eye field (FEF), was analyzed and compared between PRE and POST. Furthermore, we investigated rs-fMRI-behavior correlations between the DAN-FC in PRE/POST and task performance parameters. The absolute DAN-FC did not change from PRE to POST. However, different significant rs-fMRI-behavior correlations were revealed for intra-/inter-hemispheric connections in the PRE and POST run. The stronger the FC between left FEF and IPS before task engagement, the better was the learning effect (improvement of reaction times) in VS (r = 0.521, p = 0.024). And the faster the VS (mean RT), the stronger was the FC between right FEF and IPS after task engagement (r = −0.502, p = 0.032). To conclude, DAN-FC relates to the individual performance in spatial attention tasks supporting the view of functional brain networks as priors for cognitive ability. Despite a high inter- and intra-individual stability of DAN-FC, the change of FC-behavior correlations after task performance possibly indicates task-related adaptation of the DAN, underlining that behavioral experiences may shape intrinsic brain activity. However, spontaneous state fluctuations of the DAN-FC over time cannot be fully ruled out as an alternative explanation.

The neural correlates of working memory training in typically developing children.

Working memory training improves children's cognitive performance on untrained tasks; however, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. This was investigated in 32 typically developing children aged 10-14years (19girls and 13 boys) using a randomized controlled design and multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (Devon, UK; 2015-2016). Training improved working memory performance and increased intrinsic functional connectivity between the bilateral intraparietal sulci. Furthermore, improvements in working memory were associated with greater recruitment of the left middle frontal gyrus on a complex span task. Repeated engagement of fronto-parietal regions during training may increase their activity and functional connectivity over time, affording greater working memory performance. The plausibility of generalizable cognitive benefits from a neurobiological perspective and implications for neurodevelopmental theory are discussed.

Working Memory Deficits Related to Brain Atrophy in Early Stage Parkinson's Disease

<h3>Research Objectives</h3> To explore the relationship between attention/working memory (WM) performance and grey matter volume in the dorsal attention network (DAN), a neural network in the brain that supports encoding and maintenance of external information. <h3>Design</h3> Observational. <h3>Setting</h3> Data obtained from the Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative (PPMI; www.ppmi-info.org), an international longitudinal multisite study. <h3>Participants</h3> Participants with persistent WM impairment (n= 10) and persistent normal WM performance (n=10) were compared. WM was measured using the Letter Number Sequencing (LNS) test. Persistent impairment was defined by a standardized test score of 8 or less for 4 consecutive years since baseline imaging. Normal WM performance was defined by a standardized test score of 10 or more for 4 consecutive years since baseline imaging. Groups were matched on sex, age, years of education, and disease duration. <h3>Interventions</h3> Not Applicable. <h3>Main Outcome Measures</h3> Grey matter volume was measured using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) through SPM12 and CAT12. Region of interest analysis within the DAN (Schaeffer et al., 2018 100-parcel atlas), was conducted. Whole brain cluster analysis was conducted for confirmatory evidence. Significant clusters within a DAN mask (Schaeffer et al., 2018 100-parcel atlas) are reported with a FDR (p=0.05). <h3>Results</h3> For ROI analysis, grey matter atrophy in the bilateral visuomotor cortex (p=0.005), bilateral intraparietal sulcus (p=0.04), and right superior parietal lobule (p=0.021) was found in the impaired WM group compared to the normal WM group. Between groups, differences in several clusters within the DAN masks were observed. <h3>Conclusions</h3> These promising preliminary findings support the notion that changes in grey matter volume within cognitive neural networks, such as the DAN, can be a biomarker for decline in cognitive function, as well as treatment responsiveness in people living with PD. <h3>Author(s) Disclosures</h3> None.

Children With Dyscalculia Show Hippocampal Hyperactivity During Symbolic Number Perception.

Dyscalculia is a learning disability affecting the acquisition of arithmetical skills in children with normal intelligence and age-appropriate education. Two hypotheses attempt to explain the main cause of dyscalculia. The first hypothesis suggests that a problem with the core mechanisms of perceiving (non-symbolic) quantities is the cause of dyscalculia (core deficit hypothesis), while the alternative hypothesis suggests that dyscalculics have problems only with the processing of numerical symbols (access deficit hypothesis). In the present study, the symbolic and non-symbolic numerosity processing of typically developing children and children with dyscalculia were examined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Control (n = 15, mean age: 11.26) and dyscalculia (n = 12, mean age: 11.25) groups were determined using a wide-scale screening process. Participants performed a quantity comparison paradigm in the fMRI with two number conditions (dot and symbol comparison) and two difficulty levels (0.5 and 0.7 ratio). The results showed that the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS), left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and left fusiform gyrus (so-called “number form area”) were activated for number perception as well as bilateral occipital and supplementary motor areas. The task difficulty engaged bilateral insular cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, IPS, and DLPFC activation. The dyscalculia group showed more activation in the left orbitofrontal cortex, left medial prefrontal cortex, and right anterior cingulate cortex than the control group. The dyscalculia group showed left hippocampus activation specifically for the symbolic condition. Increased left hippocampal and left-lateralized frontal network activation suggest increased executive and memory-based compensation mechanisms during symbolic processing for dyscalculics. Overall, our findings support the access deficit hypothesis as a neural basis for dyscalculia.

Higher functional connectivity between prefrontal regions and the dorsal attention network predicts absence of renewal

Renewal describes the recovery of an extinguished response when extinction and recall contexts differ, demonstrating the context-dependency of extinction. The unexpected outcome change during extinction presumably directs attention to the context and promotes renewal. Accordingly, studies show that context processing for renewal is modulated by salience of and attention to context. Besides context-processing hippocampus, renewal involves ventromedial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex and inferior frontal gyrus, which mediate response processing. Since showing renewal is a trait-like processing tendency, individuals with and without renewal may differ in resting-state functional connectivity of prefrontal regions with networks mediating attentional and salience processing.We analyzed resting-state functional MRI data from healthy participants (n = 70) of a non-fear-related contextual extinction task particularly suited for investigation of renewal. Participants without renewal exhibited significantly higher functional connectivity between prefrontal regions and bilateral intraparietal sulcus of the dorsal attention network. Functional connectivity between these regions correlated negatively with renewal level. Only in participants with renewal, the renewal level correlated positively with connectivity between left frontal eye field and several prefrontal regions. In contrast, functional connectivity of prefrontal regions with the salience network did not differ between groups.The results deliver first-time evidence for differences in resting-state functional connectivity between participants with and without renewal in non-fear-related extinction. Intraparietal-sulcus-guided top-down attentional control appears more strongly related to prefrontal activity in participants without renewal, and thus may have a role in their default processing mode of focusing on the stimulus and disregarding the context.

Shared Neural Circuits for Visuospatial Working Memory and Arithmetic in Children and Adults.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) plays an important role in arithmetic problem solving, and the relationship between these two skills is thought to change over development. Even though neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that VSWM and arithmetic both recruit frontoparietal networks, inferences about common neural substrates have largely been made by comparisons across studies. Little work has examined how brain activation for VSWM and arithmetic converge within the same participants and whether there are age-related changes in the overlap of these neural networks. In this study, we examined how brain activity for VSWM and arithmetic overlap in 38 children and 26 adults. Although both children and adults recruited the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) for VSWM and arithmetic, children showed more focal activation within the right IPS, whereas adults recruited the bilateral IPS, superior frontal sulcus/middle frontal gyrus, and right insula. A comparison of the two groups revealed that adults recruited a more left-lateralized network of frontoparietal regions for VSWM and arithmetic compared with children. Together, these findings suggest possible neurocognitive mechanisms underlying the strong relationship between VSWM and arithmetic and provide evidence that the association between VSWM and arithmetic networks changes with age.

Gray matter volume in left intraparietal sulcus predicts longitudinal gains in subtraction skill in elementary school

Although behavioral studies show large improvements in arithmetic skills in elementary school, we do not know how brain structure supports math gains in typically developing children. While some correlational studies have investigated the concurrent association between math performance and brain structure, such as gray matter volume (GMV), longitudinal studies are needed to infer if there is a causal relation. Although discrepancies in the literature on the relation between GMV and math performance have been attributed to the different demands on quantity vs. retrieval mechanisms, no study has experimentally tested this assumption. We defined regions of interests (ROIs) associated with quantity representations in the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and associated with the storage of arithmetic facts in long-term memory in the left middle and superior temporal gyri (MTG/STG), and studied associations between GMV in these ROIs and children's performance on operations having greater demands on quantity vs. retrieval mechanisms, namely subtraction vs. multiplication. The aims of this study were threefold: First, to study concurrent associations between GMV and math performance, second, to investigate the role of GMV at the first time-point (T1) in predicting longitudinal gains in math skill to the second time-point (T2), and third, to study whether changes in GMV over time were associated with gains in math skill. Results showed no concurrent association between GMV in IPS and math performance, but a concurrent association between GMV in left MTG/STG and multiplication skill at T1. This association showed that the higher the GMV in this ROI, the higher the children's multiplication skill. Results also revealed that GMV in left IPS and left MTG/STG predicted longitudinal gains in subtraction skill only for younger children (approximately 10 years old). Whereas higher levels of GMV in left IPS at T1 predicted larger subtraction gains, higher levels of GMV in left MTG/STG predicted smaller gains. GMV in left MTG/STG did not predict longitudinal gains in multiplication skill. No significant association was found between changes in GMV over time and longitudinal gains in math. Our findings support the early importance of brain structure in the IPS for mathematical skills that rely on quantity mechanisms.

Distinct cortical thickness correlates of early life trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder are shared among adolescent and adult females with interpersonal violence exposure.

Early life trauma (ELT) exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) both affect neural structure, which predicts a variety of mental health concerns throughout the lifespan and may present differently between adolescents and adults. However, few studies have identified the relationship between ELT, PTSD, development, and brain structure using cortical thickness (CT). CT may reveal previously obscured alterations that are potentially clinically relevant and, furthermore, could identify specific structural correlates distinct to ELT from PTSD. Two hundred and fifty-three female adolescent and adult survivors of interpersonal violence and non-trauma-exposed demographically matched controls underwent structural MRI at two different sites. Images were processed and CT was estimated using FreeSurfer. Vertex-wise linear model tests were conducted across the cortical surface to investigate whether PTSD and ELT exposure uniquely affect CT, controlling for scanner site. Planned follow-up tests included second-level analyses of clinical symptoms for CT clusters that were significantly related to PTSD or ELT. CT in the middle cingulate cortex was inversely related to ELT in both age groups, such that individuals with more ELT demonstrated less CT in this region. Additionally, CT was significantly greater in the bilateral intraparietal sulcus and left angular gyrus in both adolescents and adults with PTSD. Furthermore, CT in these clusters was also significantly related to clinical symptom severity in the adult PTSD group. This study provides evidence for distinct CT correlates of ELT and PTSD that are present across adolescents and adults, suggesting consistent markers related to ELT and PTSD on gray matter structure in trauma-exposed individuals.

The neural correlates of moral comparison

Moral comparison supports the moral judgment that then evaluates social behaviors and restrains social interactions. However, previous studies have not investigated what neural networks support the process of moral comparison. The present study examined neural networks of moral and physical size comparisons using a distance paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging. In the experiment, participants judged which picture/sentence presented a more moral scenario in the moral comparison run or which picture/sentence had a larger physical size in the physical comparison run. Results demonstrated that both moral and physical comparisons induced a distance effect—participants’ responses were faster for high than low distance comparisons. Moreover, moral and physical comparisons recruited similar neural networks, including the bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, bilateral intraparietal sulcus, and bilateral insula. Interestingly, compared with physical size comparisons, moral comparisons elicited stronger activity in the bilateral precuneus, bilateral angular gyrus, and bilateral superior frontal gyrus. Meanwhile, compared with moral comparisons, physical size comparisons elicited stronger activity in the right inferior parietal lobule. Together, these results suggest that the neural substrates of moral and physical comparisons not only share the frontoparietal network but also rely on specific neural underpinnings, depending on the specific comparison recruited.

Structural connectome and connectivity lateralization of the multimodal vestibular cortical network

Unlike other sensory systems, the structural connectivity patterns of the human vestibular cortex remain a matter of debate. Based on their functional properties and hypothesized centrality within the vestibular network, the ‘core’ cortical regions of this network are thought to be areas in the posterior peri-sylvian cortex, in particular the retro-insula (previously named the posterior insular cortex-PIC), and the subregion OP2 of the parietal operculum.To study the vestibular network, structural connectivity matrices from n=974 healthy individuals drawn from the public Human Connectome Project (HCP) repository were estimated using multi-shell diffusion-weighted data followed by probabilistic tractography and spherical-deconvolution informed filtering of tractograms in combination with subject-specific grey-matter parcellations. Weighted graph-theoretical measures, modularity, and ‘hubness’ of the multimodal vestibular network were then estimated, and a structural lateralization index was defined in order to assess the difference in fiber density of homonym regions in the right and left hemisphere. Differences in connectivity patterns between OP2 and PIC were also estimated.We found that the bilateral intraparietal sulcus, PIC, and to a lesser degree OP2, are key ‘hub’ regions within the multimodal vestibular network. PIC and OP2 structural connectivity patterns were lateralized to the left hemisphere, while structural connectivity patterns of the posterior peri-sylvian supramarginal and superior temporal gyri were lateralized to the right hemisphere. These lateralization patterns were independent of handedness.We also found that the structural connectivity pattern of PIC is consistent with a key role of PIC in visuo-vestibular processing and that the structural connectivity pattern of OP2 is consistent with integration of mainly vestibular somato-sensory and motor information. These results suggest an analogy between PIC and the simian visual posterior sylvian (VPS) area and OP2 and the simian parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC).Overall, these findings may provide novel insights to the current models of vestibular function, as well as to the understanding of the complexity and lateralized signs of vestibular syndromes.
