WPWin needs at least a 386 microprocessor (CPU), 6MB of memory (RAM, Windows 3.1 running in enhanced mode and 4MB of free hard disk space for temporary files+ But here's what you really need for speed: 1. A fast CPU. A fast CPU, such as a 75-133MHz Pentium, means faster performance. If you're not ready to buy a new computer, consider a chip upgrade. I recently popped in a $200 Cyrix chip to upgrade my 386/33 CPU to a 486/66, and now it runs much faster. (For information about Cyrix Corporation, circle 94 or call 214/968-8387.) 2. 16MB memory. Windows programs use lots of memory, and they run faster when plenty of memory is available. 3. An accelerated graphics card with 2MB memory. Your graphics card is a key factor for good Windows performance. Top brands include ATI, Diamond, Matrox, Number Nine and Hercules. By the way, if you're buying a new machine, look for a PCI bus, which gives faster graphics performance than ISA and VL buses. 4. A big and fast hard disk. A fast disk can access data in 10 milliseconds or less and has a data transfer rate of at least 3MB a second. A big disk is 1GB or larger. (You'll use that space faster than you think!)
