Providing low-cost and high-quality medications to rural communities in developing countries: The case of Accion Medica Cristiana in Nicaragua

This case describes a situation in which an NGO that distributes drugs in rural Nicaragua faces inventory management issues, caused by the increased complexity of its supply chain. The case also describes how a regulation change made Nicaragua a more profitable setting for pharmaceutical distributors, which attracted more competition, including that of a Mexican low-cost drugstore chain. This case has two main purposes: 1) to develop students' knowledge and skills in business model assessment; and 2) to help students identify key resources, activities and capabilities of an organization. The CANVAS business model generation tool constitutes a pragmatic tool that enables the students/participants to fully understand, assess and discuss the basic business model of an organization.

Coworking Spaces: A Source of Social Support for Independent Professionals

Coworking spaces are shared office environments for independent professionals. Such spaces have been increasing rapidly throughout the world, and provide, in addition to basic business infrastructure, the opportunity for social interaction. This article explores social interaction in coworking spaces and reports the results of two studies. Study 1 (N = 69 coworkers) finds that social interaction in coworking spaces can take the form of social support. Study 2 further investigates social support among coworkers (N = 154 coworkers) and contrasts these results with those of social support among colleagues in traditional work organizations (N = 609). A moderated mediation model using time pressure and self-efficacy, based on the conservation of resources theory, is tested. Social support from both sources was positively related to performance satisfaction. Self-efficacy mediated this relationship in the employee sample, while in the coworking sample, self-efficacy only mediated the relationship between social support and performance satisfaction if time pressure was high. Thus, a mobilization of social support seems necessary in coworking spaces. We conclude that coworking spaces, as modern social work environments, should align flexible work infrastructure with well-constructed opportunities for social support.

Business Incubation for People with Severe Mental Illness Histories: The Experience of One Model

ABSTRACTThe Enterprise People was a business incubator for people with serious mental health conditions that operated in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1998–2005. It supported entrepreneurs with learning basic business skills, start-up processes and expenses, back office supports, ongoing problem solving, and for some, with space to conduct their businesses. The original impetus was to discover whether people with SMI histories could successfully start and operate small businesses. Although this was confirmed, the experience also uncovered factors that will allow other projects of this sort to succeed, and some core infrastructural supports that need to be created. The experience demonstrates that self-employment supported by formal business incubation is a viable option in the range of mental health vocational rehabilitation models.

The Relationship Between Strategic Decision-Making and Leadership Styles: An Application in 4 and 5-Star Hotels in Istanbul

The aim of this study is to define the relationship between leadership styles and strategic decision-making in hotel businesses. Datas are obtained by using questionnaire technique. The questionnaire is applied to general managers or executives who are effective in making decisions in hotel businesses. This study comprises four and five star hotel businesses that have tourism establishment certificates. Since the number of population used is not excrescence in the research, complete enumeration sampling method is used and data is obtained from 87 hotel businesses. Results reveal that four and five star hotel businesses in Istanbul have executives showing transformational leadership, paternalistic leadership, autocratic leadership and charismatic leadership styles. Leaders who have these leadership styles make strategic decisions aimed at innovation and change basic business strategies, intervene in conflict and risk taking. The existence of meaningful relavence among leadership styles with strategic decisionmaking is determined.

The Application Of Coaching İn The Preparation Of Employees For Work Performance

The aim of the present paper based on theoretical and empirical analysis is the description and evaluation of benefits of coaching in education in organizations in the Slovak Republic. Our intention is to work out the issue of coaching from the aspect of individual coaching, group coaching and team coaching, as well as from the perspective of understanding the role of coaching as part of leading. The present paper contains partial results of the research conducted under the first stage of work on the research project KEGA 014EU-4/2016 – ‟Preparation of the content and structure of courses focused on the development of basic business knowledge and skills of graduates from non-economic health service fields of study”. Results presented in the paper relate to the application of coaching in institutions employing respondents of the research and to types and kinds of coaching. The research was conducted by means of the interview method and the questionnaire method. The data collection was held in two stages (each containing several rounds) in order to obtain respondents’ responses of high information value.

Setup cost reduction EMQ inventory system with probabilistic defective and rework in multiple shipments management

This paper considers an economic manufacturing quantity (EMQ) model for defective products with imperfect production processes and rework, in which the setup cost is logarithmic function of capital investment. In this study, fixed quantity multiple installments of the finished batch are delivered to customers at a fixed interval of time. We also consider three types of continuous probabilistic defective function to find the associated cost. The way our basic business operations like decision making, marketing strategies, financial management, etc. are done are being reformed with the use of computers and mathematics. In view of that the mathematical modeling and computational algorithm are employed in this study for optimizing the replenishment lot-size and setup cost simultaneously with the objective of minimizing total cost of the EMQ system. The long-run average cost function is derived, its convexity is proved via differential calculus. A computer code using the software Matlab is developed to derive the optimal solution and present numerical examples to illustrate the model.

THEORY OF GENERATIONS AS A TOOL FOR ANALYSIS, FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF LABOUR POTENTIAL

The modern Strauss–Howe generational theory created at the intersection of economic, sociological, historical and psychological Sciences. She focuses primarily on difference of attitudes of generations, due to the specific social environment, corresponding to a certain period of time. Such a perspective on issues related to the human factor in the economy, has recently attracted interest not only from researchers, but also finds application for solving practical problems in some fields of business. Subject / theme. The article is devoted to one of the urgent contemporary socio-economic problems – the issue of the formation and development of labor potential. In this context, the theory of generations is offered by the authors as a tool for the study of qualitative parameters of human resources and the planning of future work opportunities in our country. In particular, the article considers the main aspects of the classical version of the Strauss–Howe generational theory and its Russian adaptation. Statistics describing the General demographics and working population of Russia from the point of view of generational groups. On this basis, a forecast is made of the labor potential of the country in the long term structure, review and compare the basic values and business characteristics of its constituent generations. Problem areas for which use of generational approach is rational are revealed and the corresponding recommendations are made. Objectives. The purpose of this article is justification of the possible application of provisions of modern theories of generations to identify and predict the dynamics of qualitative characteristics of the domestic workforce, as well as the prospects of its use in order to control the formation and development of labor potential. Methods. Methodological basis of the presented work make comparative and economic-statistical and socio-cultural methods of analysis. Results. In the framework of this article, the authors determined that of the five generations living in Russia today four groups constitute the major workforce of the country. At the same time in terms of labour potential for the future advisable to consider three generations, the evaluation value characteristics which showed significant differences in their social and personal attitudes that affect attitudes to education, the acquisition of professional skills and work as a whole. This situation carries the negative points, so it is important to establish quality of intergenerational interaction and choose the right vector of development of labor potential, aimed at the successful development of the domestic economy. Conclusions /significance. Practical value of the study is that the authors offer recommendations for the use of the theory of generations as a management tool can be applied in the framework of the tasks of formation and development of labour potential at the level of countries and individual organizations.

Models and Mechanisms for the Management of ICT-Technoparks

The paper shows that the innovative development of economy requires improvement and systematization of management processes. And innovation is activated using modern forms of organization, application and commercialization of high technology through integration of science, education, manufacturing, business and government. These processes are jointly carried out by innovative structures. In this regard, the paper describes the control features of ICT-technoparks, which have interacting structural elements. The paper specifies imperfection of the current control systems of innovative organizations. Therefore, different approaches are given to the definition of the management content. It is proved that the problem of increasing the efficiency of the management process requires the development of complex control system of ICT-technoparks. The paper specifies the basic management levels of ICT-technoparks, and presents its tasks and functions, as well as the main activities of executive management of ICT-technoparks. The paper describes the basic model and business management model. Depending on the time factor, the strategic and tactical control aspects of ICT-technoparks are analyzed. As the management of ICT-technoparks is viewed as a complex socio-economic system, the public and collegial governance mechanisms are proposed. It is proposed to develop a control system of ICT-technoparks and an appropriate control mechanisms. These mechanisms take into account the key moments in the development process of innovative control system of ICT-technoparks.

Entrepreneurial Literacy and the Second Language Curriculum

In this article, we outline ways that language pedagogy intersects with best practices in entrepreneurial education. By highlighting two courses, one in translation studies for a polyglot audience and another in entrepreneurship for Spanish-speaking students, we show how to infuse basic business principles into language curricula. Course objectives, tasks that help students meet those objectives, and assessment tools are detailed as well. We conclude by asserting that the skills gained through these additions to the curriculum will lead to student success in and beyond the classroom.

The impact of long-lived non-financial assets depreciation/amortization method on financial statements

Non-financial long-lived assets are ones ensuring company’s basic business operations, with expected useful time more than one accounting period, and generating profit. Assets often requiring significant investments constitute also considerable part of companies’ total assets in its statements of financial position. In average this proportion in balance sheets of Latvian companies listed in Baltic stock exchange is 48%. In most of these companies this percentage is higher and even up to 97%. Due to nowadays global economic situation the management of non-financial long- -lived assets also plays significant role in both – shareholders’ (actual/ potential) and management’s – decision-making processes concerning investing, financing, controlling, other activities. In order to ensure financial statements reflects real situation of the particular company, company’s management is responsible to ensure that accounting process of depreciation/ amortization these assets is: – Correct, transparent and in line with specifics of company’s business; – In accordance with respective accounting and reporting regulations. This article reveals theoretical and practical view exploring how information relating depreciation/ amortization of long-lived non-financial assets influences results in financial statements of Latvian companies listed in Baltic stock exchange.

Are professional psychology training programs willing the future to economic illiterates?: a clarion call for pedagogical action

Background: The behavioral health care environment in the United States is changing and many experts expect seismic shifts in access, accountability and reimbursement policies. Students in professional psychology training programs will be called upon to administer, manage, supervise and deliver clinically sound as well as cost effective services. While in general, traditional professional psychology training curricula prepare students well for clinical challenges, most students enter the profession naïve to the economic, financial and business enterprise crucibles in the behavioral health care marketplace.Aims: This article examines the problem of such naiveté and offers several recommendations for improving graduate students’ economic literacy. Moreover, the article argues that increased business and economic acumen may serve to close the research-practice gap in professional psychology.Methods: The article reviews literature pertinent to training psychologists and highlights pedagogical gaps.Results: Several recommendations for curricular development are offered. Specifically, adding courses in health care economics and basic business principles is suggested. Integrating cost-effectiveness analyses across all course content is proposed. The article also emphasizes both didactic and experiential learning opportunities.Conclusion: Course work should be augmented with training opportunities at the practicum, internship, and post-doctoral fellowship level.

Whose business is it to employ Indigenous workers?

AbstractResearch about the demand for Indigenous labour and the relationship of Indigenous workers to their employers is relatively scarce. Even less is known about Indigenous businesses. Supply Nation defines an Indigenous business as those where Indigenous stakeholders hold majority equity, but some researchers have argued that this definition could be relaxed to include businesses in which Indigenous people hold only half the equity in the enterprise. This article uses data from the Industry Capability Network Queensland, which has collected basic business information on a large number of businesses operating in Queensland. The findings reveal that Indigenous businesses have substantially better outcomes for Indigenous employment than non-Indigenous businesses – a result that holds even when the definition of Indigenous business is relaxed. The article also documents how Indigenous employment is concentrated in larger businesses, in particular industry sectors. Non-Indigenous micro-businesses employ relatively few Indigenous workers, and future research can usefully explore why this is the case. To understand the issues involved, it will be necessary to collect multi-level data that link detailed information on employers and employees (including a substantial sample of Indigenous workers).

ADEQUACY OF MATERIAL RESOURCES REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF UPPER BASIC EDUCATION BUSINESS STUDIES CURRICULUM IN EBONYI STATE, NIGERIA

This work is a descriptive survey of the adequacy of the material resources required for effective implementation of upper basic education business studies curriculum in Ebonyi State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided this study. Two hundred and forty-one (241) business studies teachers participated in this study. A four point structured questionnaire, with reliability coefficient of 0.81 was administered to the 241 respondents. The research question responses were sorted to find the mean and standard deviation with a t-test run to test the hypotheses. The two null hypotheses were accepted at 0.05 significance. The results showed that business studies facilities are of low adequacy and business studies curriculum textbook provisions are of low adequacy. There was no significant difference between the adequacy of business studies facilities in public and private junior secondary schools; and there is no significant difference between the adequacy of business studies curriculum textbook provision in urban and rural junior secondary schools. The study recommended that government and other stakeholders pool their resources to ensure that business studies facilities and textbooks are adequately provided since education for all is the responsibility of all.

The author presents some disturbing statistics and points out that although the numbers of women in business are improving, there is still a gap that needs to be addressed.The book goes on to examine 10 successful female entrepreneurs through the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries; each woman has her own chapter devoted to her life history, education, influences, and business philosophy. These entrepreneurs are from a variety of countries (with a good representation of Canadian women) and ethnic backgrounds, and from a mixture of business fields: beauty products, retail, finance, technology, aviation, media, construction, and environmental causes. The first two chapters are about “historical” figures who were particularly remarkable in that their businesses flourished despite being women during times when it was virtually unheard of that women could be successful in business. What all the women in this book have in common is a drive and desire to make a difference, and to build thriving businesses based on trust and fairness. There are some good, solid “how-to” tips and suggestions of some helpful traits for success in the business world.There is a good comprehensive glossary of basic business terms at the end of the book.Phenomenal Female Entrepreneurs is a very interesting look at the lives of female entrepreneurs, their motivations for pursuing their business passions, and the obstacles they encountered and ultimately overcame. Hacia la formación de un espíritu emprendedor, orientado a la formalidad

This article is the result of the actions of University Social Responsibility (USR) being made from the Unit of Social Management for 4 years with students of Technology Management and Business Administration from the Fundacion Universitaria Cafam. It is framed in the processes of basic business management training aimed at adults from educational communities Cafam Santa Lucia y Cafam la Esperanza of Rafael Uribe and Bosa localities respectively. This paper presents the results of a process of andragogical formative research with a group of adults Cafam Santa Lucia school, based on the use of the workshop as a strategy for teaching and learning. As part of the research was conducted, first, a study of the context, it was previously known to the people who would benefit. Gradually, throughout the semester, the proposed workshop was designed, in response to suggestions that were occurring in the process of mentoring project. Thus, two workshops for teaching theoretical content that enabled participation, self-education and dialogue with adult participants were designed. In the framework Management training we worked on the formalization of businesses; This issue is of great importance, since it offers financial, tax and commercial benefits to businesses. This experience was rated as excellent as the student used effective teaching and learning strategies, based on planning and development activities focused on the interests of the adult participants, mediated by a good learning environment and human sense. Participants proved to have clear and achievable ideas venture. The friendly and warm atmosphere that is offered in this course emphasized teamwork, communication and respect, which was used to promote values of the administration that facilitate the success of a company. For students this experience allowed strengthening their management skills and understand the importance given to the University of social responsibility in the formation of integral professionals.

Hostility Patterns: Implications for Nursing Practice.

In order to present the state of the science of hostility among and across disciplines, a review of the literature was completed. The knowledge gained may influence nursing practice. Scholarly works from nursing, medical and basic sciences, psychology, sociology, education, philosophy, business, communication, and criminology were reviewed. Similar patterns in the use of the concept were discovered. The patterns revealed five themes: hostility as a health-risk factor, hostility as a factor in family relationships, hostility as a factor in perceived challenge, hostility as a factor in criminal behavior, and hostility as a factor in the workplace. Based on the knowledge gained about hostility, implications for nursing practice related to changing the hostile working environment for nurses were suggested using modeling and role-modeling nursing theory.

Enterprise Pattern: integrating the business process into a unified enterprise model of modern service company

Modern service company (MSC), the enterprise involving special domains, such as the financial industry, information service industry and technology development industry, depends heavily on information technology. Modelling of such enterprise has attracted much research attention because it promises to help enterprise managers to analyse basic business strategies (e.g. the pricing strategy) and even optimise the business process (BP) to gain benefits. While the existing models proposed by economists cover the economic elements, they fail to address the basic BP and its relationship with the economic characteristics. Those proposed in computer science regardless of achieving great success in BP modelling perform poorly in supporting the economic analysis. Therefore, the existing approaches fail to satisfy the requirement of enterprise modelling for MSC, which demands simultaneous consideration of both economic analysing and business processing. In this article, we provide a unified enterprise modelling approach named Enterprise Pattern (EP) which bridges the gap between the BP model and the enterprise economic model of MSC. Proposing a language named Enterprise Pattern Description Language (EPDL) covering all the basic language elements of EP, we formulate the language syntaxes and two basic extraction rules assisting economic analysis. Furthermore, we extend Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to support EPDL, named BPMN for Enterprise Pattern (BPMN4EP). The example of mobile application platform is studied in detail for a better understanding of EPDL.
