High-selectivity fully tunable wideband bandpass filter with adaptive transmission zeros

This paper presents a compact fully tunable wide-band bandpass filter based on the varactors loaded quadruple mode coupled resonator. Triple adaptive transmission zeros (TZs) have achieved by reasonably setting the identical shifting mechanism architecture of transmission poles and adjacent TZs, which dramatically improve the selectivity. Meanwhile, it realized the tunable center frequency (CF) with a constant absolute bandwidth, resulting in the CF tuning range of 26.7 %, 25.8 %, and 15.6 % from 1.5 to 1.95 GHz. The bandwidth tuning range of 42.7 % can be achieved from 180 to 920 MHz with a fixed CF. The test results match well with the theoretical simulation so as to successfully validate the correctness of the proposed design approach.

Multifunctional and tunable bandpass filters with RF codesigned isolator and impedance matching capabilities

Abstract This paper presents the radio frequency (RF) design and experimental validation of a multifunctional bandpass filtering (BPF) concept with center frequency tunability and RF codesigned isolator and impedance matching functionality. The multifunctional bandpass filter/isolator (BPFI) concept combines frequency-tunable reciprocal resonators and nonreciprocal frequency-selective stages (NFSs) to realize center frequency tunability and fully directional transfer characteristics. The NFS, as the core component of the BPFI concept, exhibits frequency-selective transmission response in the forward direction and signal cancellation in the reverse direction. Its tunability is achieved by combining a transistor-based network with a tunable capacitively loaded coupled-line section. Furthermore, the NFS facilitates matching of different source loads allowing for the BPFIs to be used as reconfigurable matching networks. For experimental validation, an NFS and two BPFIs were designed, manufactured, and measured at L band. Their features include (i) NFS: center frequency tuning from 1.55 to 1.9 GHz with maximum directivity from 20 to 52 dB and gain from 0.3 to 1.3 dB. (ii) BPFI (topology A): center frequency tuning from 1.52 to 1.9 GHz with maximum directivity from 20 to 44 dB and gain from −1.5 to −0.5 dB. (iii) BPFI (topology C): ability to match complex loads with 26 + j18 Ω and 26 − j14 Ω.

Generation of frequency-shift keying (FSK) and amplitude-shift keying (ASK) RF signals by diode-tuned Fourier domain mode-locked opto-electronic oscillator.

An approach to the generation of frequency-shift keying (FSK) and amplitude-shift keying (ASK) RF signals with a diode-tuned Fourier domain mode-locked opto-electronic oscillator (FDML OEO) is proposed and demonstrated. We use a low-cost varactor diode tuned phase shifter to form a high speed tunable bandpass filter (TBF) to implement the FDML-OEO. When a square wave modulation signal is used to drive the TBF, FSK RF signals are generated, with the flexibility to easily change the center frequency and tuning bandwidth of the FSK signals. For the ASK RF signal generation, a band-pass filter (BPF) with a bandwidth less than the TBF tuning range is added to the FDML OEO RF feedback loop. When the TBF center frequency hops in and out of the BPF bandwidth within a mode locking period, the FDML OEO generates ASK RF signals. The phase noises of the FSK and ASK RF signals generated by our FDML-OEO are both measured to be -123dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency. The key significance of this approach is that no microwave source is required to generate the ASK signal and reconfigurable FSK and signals, which may find wide applications in future radar and communications systems.

Analysis of signal excited-state absorption for improving extended L-band erbium-doped fibers.

The precise characterization of signal excited-state absorption (ESA) in erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) is achieved through an ON/OFF pumping scheme, using a supercontinuum source in conjunction with a bandpass tunable filter to generate the input signal. Normalizing the ESA profile, by the value of the ESA peak, allows sample comparisons independent of their erbium concentration. This method directly assesses the impact of ESA on the net gain within the 1600-1730 nm range, providing a significant means to study how to expand the gain bandwidth toward longer wavelengths. As an illustrative application, we investigate the effect of chemical elements, such as Er, Al, and Ba, and their concentrations on ESA. We then optimize the Al content to enhance erbium solubility without inadvertently inducing detrimental ESA effects. This advancement in the ESA characterization presents substantial advantages for the pursuit of efficient extended L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).

Development of a Tunable First Order Wide Bandpass Active Filter for Communication Systems

In this research, a tunable first-order wide bandpass active filter (BPAF) is developed especially for contemporary communication systems where frequency, flexibility and adaptability are crucial. Because of their limited ability to adapt to changing operating conditions, conventional fixed-frequency filters are inappropriate for dynamic systems such as Software-Defined Radio (SDR) and multi-band communication platforms. Using operational amplifiers and variable passive parts like resistors and capacitors, this paper describes the design theoretical analysis and real-world application of a first-order tunable bandpass filter. With a frequency range of 1 kHz to 10 MHz and an adjustable bandwidth of 100 Hz to 2 MHz, the tunable BPAF is perfect for both narrow and wideband applications. Circuit simulation hardware prototyping and testing with function generators and oscilloscopes are all part of the design process which assesses the circuit noise performance gain, stability and frequency response. The findings show low harmonic distortion and superb tuning accuracy preserving steady performance over the whole operating range. When real-time frequency adjustment is required in communication systems, this tunable filter offers substantial benefits by offering flexibility and dependability in demanding settings. Higher-order designs for more precise frequency roll-offs and enhanced selectivity may be investigated in future research.

A compact and tunable active inductor-based bandpass filter with high quality factor for Wireless LAN applications

A fully-differential compact and tunable second-order bandpass filter (BPF) with high quality factor using a novel active inductor (AI) has been proposed for 3.6 GHz WLAN applications. The proposed AI employs a differential amplifier as a feedforward transconductor and a common-source (CS) transistor as a feedback transconductor in a symmetrical configuration. The combination of a cascode scheme and a resistor in the feedback path enhances the quality factor of the AI, thereby increasing the mid-band gain of the BPF. In order to achieve independent tuning of both the center frequency and mid-band gain of the BPF, a varactor capacitor is utilized. The proposed second-order BPF is designed with a center frequency and a bandwidth of 3.675 GHz and 10 MHz, respectively. Post-layout simulation, process corner, and temperature sweep analysis results are conducted with 65 nm CMOS technology at 1.2 V supply voltage. The proposed filter has a tuning range of 3.655–3.695 GHz and attains a mid-band gain of 67.5 dB, a noise figure of 14.5 dB, and a 1-db compression point of −12.39 dBm. Additionally, the BPF consumes a DC power of 1.22 mW and occupies an active area of only 8.85 μm × 10.3 μm.

A tunable narrow single-mode bandpass filter using graphene nanoribbons for THz applications

This paper presents a tunable, single-mode narrowband optical filter designed for terahertz applications utilizing graphene nanoribbons. To attain optimal conditions, the filter was devised in three steps. It is composed of two input and output waveguides and a T-shaped resonator with nanoscale dimensions. The transmission spectrum analysis employs the three-dimensional finite difference time domain and coupled mode theory methods. Tunability is achieved through the adjustment of the nanoribbon size and the chemical potential of graphene. The filter demonstrates remarkable performance metrics, including a maximum transmission spectrum efficiency of 99%, a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.115 THz, a quality factor (Q-factor) of 100, and a free spectral range (FSR) of 45 THz. The presented structure holds significant promise for integrated optical components and compact optical devices, showcasing its applicability in the terahertz frequency range. Furthermore, the inherent sensitivity of this structure to changes in the refractive index of the substrate positions it as a potential sensor.

A dual mode circular waveguide cavity resonator based frequency tunable band pass filter using a single tuning element

AbstractIn this letter, we present a tunable band pass filter (BPF) using a dual‐mode circular waveguide cavity resonator using a single tuning element. For the proof of the concept, a 2nd order tunable BPF has been designed and developed over a tuning range from 4.92 to 6.1 GHz (21.4%). The measured bandwidth is 85 ± 10 MHz over the entire tuning range. The peak insertion loss is within 1.3 dB and return loss is better than 15 dB. The tunable filter is proposed to be used in high Q reconfigurable radio systems.

Design of high selectivity tunable bandpass filter with switchable single‐/dual‐band responses

AbstractThis article proposes a switchable filter with four operating states, namely dual‐band mode, lower band mode, upper band mode, and all‐stop mode. The transition between these states is achieved by using positive intrinsic negative diodes, while the center frequency tuning is done by using varactors. In order to verify the design concept, a prototype has been fabricated on an F4BME substrate with a dielectric constant of 2.25 and a thickness of 1 mm, and the measured results were in agreement with the simulations. Notably, the dual‐band mode yields four transmission zeros (TZs), while the single‐band mode produces two TZs. The final circuit size of the designed filter is 0.18 × 0.14 λg, making it ideally suited for reconfigurable multi‐band communication systems.

Design of near-infrared solid-state tunable Fabry-Perot filters based on VO2/P4VP films.

The significant refractive index change of VO2 during phase transition makes it attractive for the design of optical switches and filters, but high absorption of VO2 limits its development in the field of filter. In this paper, we firstly design near-infrared solid-state tunable/switchable single-/dual-band bandpass Fabry-Perot (F-P) filters based on VO2/P4VP composite films using COMSOL software. The simulation results show that the single-passband tunable filter can achieve a continuous thermal tuning range of 19 nm at 1064 nm, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) is 28.8 nm, and the peak transmittance is >30%. On this basis, we simulated a tunable dual-band bandpass filter, the left peak can be heated to achieve a tuning range of 15 nm (945 nm), the right peak is 24 nm (1168 nm), the peak transmittances of both the two peaks are >35%. When boosting the VO2 fraction, the continuous tunability of the above-mentioned single-/dual-band filters will be switchable due to the high absorption of VO2, and then switchable single-/dual-band bandpass filters are designed. This work has guiding significance for the design of novel filter structures and optical tunable devices based on phase change materials such as VO2 in the future.

Tunable narrow band-rejection and band-pass filter based on long-period waveguide grating on a thin-film lithium niobate rib waveguide.

We propose and demonstrate experimentally an electro-optic (EO) and thermo-optic (TO) tunable wavelength filter with band-rejection and band-pass dual-function. Our proposed filter is based on a long-period waveguide grating (LPWG) formed on a lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) rib waveguide with a channel-shaped polymer cladding waveguide. The LPWG formed on the surface of the LNOI core enables efficient mode coupling between the two fundamental modes of the LNOI waveguide and the polymer cladding waveguide and hence dual-function filtering. For the z-/x-polarized input light, our fabricated best filter shows an 18.1-dB/8.2-dB band-rejection contrast and a 15.7-dB/17.4-dB band-pass contrast at 1565.26/1594.24 nm wavelength, with a relatively narrow 3-dB bandwidth of 2.5/2.3 nm, respectively. In addition, the fabricated filter also shows an EO tuning efficiency of ∼32 pm/V and a TO tuning efficiency of 0.465 nm/°C, respectively. Our proposed filter could find applications in wavelength division multiplexing, temperature sensing, and other fields of optical communication and optical information processing.

Bandwidth modulation and pulse characterization of passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser

We demonstrate the modulation of laser bandwidth by utilizing an ultranarrow tunable bandpass filter (UNTBF) in a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser. The passive Q-switch mechanism is enabled by using carbon nanotubes as saturable absorber at a Q-switched threshold of 35.5 mW. Based on spectral filtering effect introduced by the UNTBF, the 3 dB laser bandwidth can be tuned from 0.016 nm to 0.478 nm at a fixed pump power of 75.9 mW. The corresponding pulse behavior for each different bandwidth is characterized, and the results reveals that the pulse width can be as well tuned from 7.8 to 2.6 μs against the laser bandwidth, which agrees with the rule of time-bandwidth product. Correspondingly, the pulse repetition rate and the pulse energy vary from 16.23 kHz to 26.16 kHz and from 0.67 to 1.03 μJ respectively across the laser bandwidth. Further investigation of the pulse performance is performed against the pump power increment up to 107.2 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of spectrum bandwidth modulation in a passively Q-switched fiber laser, which can be useful for fully exploiting the possibilities of Q-switched pulse applications.

Fully tunable microwave photonic narrow bandpass filter using an on-chip dual-drive microring resonator.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fully tunable microwave photonic narrow bandpass filter based on phase modulation to intensity modulation (PM-IM) conversion. In the filter implementation, an on-chip dual-drive microring resonator (MRR) is a key component. This resonator leverages a multimode waveguide to enable a high Q-factor. A metallic micro-heater and a lateral PN junction are simultaneously created for resonance wavelength tuning. When one driving signal is applied to the micro-heater, a large tuning range of the resonance wavelength is resulted; when another driving signal is applied to the PN junction, a fast tuning speed of the resonance wavelength is caused. By jointly using two different tuning mechanisms, the realized microwave photonic filter features a large frequency tuning range as well as a fast tuning speed. In addition, the filter bandwidth can also be tuned. A silicon-based dual-drive high-Q racetrack MRR chip is designed, fabricated, and evaluated. By incorporating the chip in a microwave photonic filter system, a bandpass filter with a narrow bandwidth of 1.27 GHz is achieved. An ultra-wide frequency tuning range from 3 to 51 GHz, an ultra-fast tuning speed less than 0.54 ns, and a tunable bandwidth from 1.27 to 4.47 GHz is experimentally demonstrated. This fully tunable filter offers significant potential in future radar and next-generation wireless communication applications.

A Multi-Format, Multi-Wavelength Erbium-Doped Fiber Ring Laser Using a Tunable Delay Line Interferometer

This work demonstrates the use of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), a tunable bandpass filter (TBF), and a tunable delay line interferometer (TDLI) to form a ring laser that produces multi-format, multi-wavelength laser beams. The TDLI serves as the core of the proposed laser generation system. TDLI harnesses the weak Fabry–Pérot (FP) interferences generated by its built-in 50/50 beamsplitter (BS) with unalterable filtering characteristics and the interferences with free spectral range (FSR) adjustable from each of its two outputs with nearly complementary phases to superpose and generate a variable interference standing wave. The interferometric standing wave and weak FP interferences are used to form a spatial-hole burning to promote the excitation of multi-format and multi-wavelength lasers. The proposed system enables dual-wavelength spacing ranging from 0.3 nm to 3.35 nm, with a switchable wavelength position at approximately 1527 nm to 1535 nm, providing flexible tunability.

Michelson interferometer-based tunable multiwavelength thulium-doped fluoride fiber laser in S-band for 5 G networks

This work reported a multiwavelength thulium-doped fluoride fiber laser (TDFFL) for the S-band region using the Michelson interferometer as an optical filter. Michelson interferometer was utilized as a comb-like filter, whereas dispersion-compensated fiber (DCF) of 10 km length was used to increase the number of lasing lines and reduce mode competition. Approximately 61 lasing lines were achieved with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 40 dB in the wavelength region from 1501.36 to 1505.52 nm within 10 dB of maximum power. The stability of the multiwavelength fiber laser was also recorded for the time duration of two hours, and it was found that all lasing lines were stable and equally spaced at the free spectral range (FSR) of 0.07 nm. The variation in optical power was less than 0.5 dB; however, the wavelength shift was about 0.01 nm. Tunability of multiwavelength laser has also been observed up to the broader transmission span of 57 nm by incorporating the tunable band pass filter (TBPF). Moreover, FSR was observed to be tunable within the range of 0.02 to 0.14 nm by using the optical delay line (ODL) with a Michelson interferometer. Additionally, the proposed laser can generate frequency signals from 2.65 GHz to 18.54 GHz according to the obtained range of FSR.
