Reviewing the Awareness of Mental Health Staff of the Possible Visual Side Effects of Antipsychotic Medications

Objective: A staff awareness project was undertaken in order to assess the awareness of clinical staff working in a UK community psychiatry practice of the visual side effects of antipsychotic medications. Study Design: A staff questionnaire was provided to assess baseline knowledge of the visual side effects of antipsychotic medication (the First Questionnaire). Subsequently, a short information sheet was provided regarding the visual side effects of antipsychotic medications. A Second Questionnaire for clinical staff was provided to assess reflections on knowledge gained. Results: 100% of respondents to the Second Questionnaire found the information sheet informative in refreshing or providing knowledge. 100% of the respondents to the Second Questionnaire also found the information sheet had improved their knowledge of the impact of antipsychotic on vision, and how it can be managed. 100% of respondents stated the information provided would influence their care of patients on antipsychotics and how they might approach care. Conclusion: Antipsychotic medications can cause ocular complications and visual side effects. Staff and patient education regarding these potential side effects can help promote patient safety.

OUTC-12. BLACK IN CANCER: EMPOWERING AND ENCOURAGING FUTURE BLACK CANCER LEADERS WHILST REDUCING CANCER DISPARITIES THROUGH EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY

Abstract From its inception in 2020, Black in Cancer has been modelling an action-oriented approach to improving representation across the cancer community. Black in Cancer (BIC) was founded during the racial justice protests that swept across the globe in the midst of a number of Black professionals aiming to promote visibility and sharing of resources within their respective groups leading to “Black in X” communities on social media and in particular twitter. This network was required in the cancer community with Black cancer researchers, clinicians and patient advocates being underrepresented and Black patients underserved. Black or African American workers make up 12% of the U.S. working population but represent just 9% of STEM workers. Dissected even further, only 3% of medical oncologists are Black and training programs such as oncology fellowships have minimally increased between 2006 and 2018. For researchers, this disparity is even more prominent, as only 1% of all professors in biology at U.S.institutions are Black and just 0.6% in the UK. Studies show that Black researchers are about 55% less likely to receive NIH funding than white researchers. Several studies from AACR and Cancer Research UK show that Black patients are diagnosed at a later stage, with more aggressive cancers and have a higher mortality rate. Our organisation has two main initiatives to tackle these challenges, through our Cancer Awareness Project (CAP)and the Mentorship and Outreach Program (MOP). These programmes have delivered $2 million in funding for Black cancer researchers at the postdoctoral level and above, and have also supported almost 40 undergraduate students through our mentorship program. Our CAP initiative has delivered a number of informational sessions to the community in how to identify symptoms, diagnosis pathways and how patients can be informed and empowered about their healthcare decisions.

The lived experience of poverty in Ireland: a commentary on the ‘Object Poverty’ exhibition

ABSTRACT This article reports on a poverty awareness project which was conducted by participants and staff based in an organisation for women affected by addiction and poverty. Through the application of material ethnography methods, this initiative led to the creation of a set of artefacts which culminated in the exhibition titled, Object Poverty. This article traces the history of this initiative and its effectiveness in building poverty awareness within and external to the host organisation.

Empagliflozin and dulaglutide: community awareness project promotes improved access to newly funded medications for Pacific patients with type 2 diabetes.

The aims of our awareness campaign were to increase the number of inquiries by patients to doctors for two new diabetes drugs funded by Pharmac on 1 February 2021 and 1 September 2021 respectively, to increase the number of applications for special authority, and to trial a "grass roots" community dissemination of information that appeals to explicit individual benefit from the new medicines. The campaign used an approach tailored primarily to the Pasifika community. The campaign ran from April 2021 to July 2021 and targeted Counties Manukau communities using a talanoa approach by primarily by sharing key messages informally through social networks face-to-face by word-of-mouth. The key messages about the new medicines were shared orally with local organisations, family, friends, influential community leaders and colleagues such as justices of peace, kapa haka leaders, committee representatives from local schools, sports, cultural and hobby clubs. A printed pamphlet translated in Māori, Samoan, Tongan and English with the key messages was also distributed widely. The campaign notified 102 primary care practices, used Pacific equity teams to disseminate the information, promoted the message on Māori and Pasifika radio stations, and engaged a public relations company who contacted the South Auckland Community Trust, councillors, community boards and local churches. This approach was intended to spread the message through the community to reach people with type 2 diabetes and/or their families to prompt them to contact their doctor and see if they are eligible. To gauge how effective the campaign was, we gathered data from Pharmac that quantified new prescriptions for the new medicines by location and ethnicity. An estimated 45,000 people were exposed to our campaign materials or were told about the new medicines by people they knew. These estimations were conservatively based on the known membership, listenership, and reach of the various delivery arms by which this campaign was delivered. These data show Pacific patients, the focus of about 64% of our project work, were 40% more likely to apply and receive a prescription for empagliflozin in Counties Manukau than anywhere else in the country. Direct-to-consumer marketing is an effective way of increasing health awareness and uptake of newly funded diabetes medicine amongst Pacific patients with type 2 diabetes.

Even though the article is nearly two years old, its message is unfortunately even more relevant today and resonates with a wider audience of affected family members. The authors of this article, Drs. Bonnie Milas, Albert Varon, and Arman Dagal, highlight the opioid crisis that is consuming our country and suggest measures to combat it. A startling fact they introduce is that the risk of dying from an opioid overdose is higher than of dying from a car crash. Potentialities of the relationship between tourism and education: Report of experience of the tourism awareness project in the city of São Bernardo, Maranhão

The text presents a report of experience of a socio-educational action entitled Tourism Incentive Project (PROINTUR) developed by a group of students in the 6th period of the Bachelor in Tourism Course of the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), São Bernardo campus. The action was developed at the Deborah Correia Lima Teaching Center, and its main goal was to raise awareness among the school community regarding the importance of tourism as a socio-historical, spatial and cultural phenomenon, a factor for promoting economic growth, and an agent for social inclusion. The importance of tourism for community development is discussed, as well as tourism education actions, especially in the school context. This is followed by a presentation of the results achieved by the project. The work was based on bibliographic research, addressing the relationship between tourism and tourism education (Rabelo, 1998; Ribas, 2008; Fonseca Filho, 2007) and by pedagogical activities such as lectures, group dynamics and conversation circles with tourism and its production chain, tourist potential, and local development as the generating themes. The results of the intervention carried out show that the school community has knowledge about the importance of tourism; however, it has a restricted view of the tourist potential of the municipality of São Bernardo and the functions exercised by the bachelors degree in tourism as a transforming agent of the local reality.

An Evidence-Based Project to Improve Paternal Postpartum Depression

Transitioning to a parental role can be overwhelming for both the mother and the father. Historically, most health care focus has been placed on the maternal transition and not much emphasis on the paternal transition. As a result, paternal postpartum depression (PPPD) has been underreported, underrecognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated by health care practitioners. PPPD can have a devastating effect on the whole family. An evidence-based awareness project was implemented in a health care setting to determine whether the use of a prenatal multimodal educational intervention improved the detection of PPPD for fathers using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Fathers reported that multimodal education improved their detection of PPPD. It is imperative for advanced practice nurses to increase their awareness of PPPD and to actively seek opportunities to intervene with fathers during and after pregnancy.

The Spatial Awareness Project: A Co-Created Interdisciplinary Educational Film and Podcast

Place-based digital storytelling can transform conversations about environmental challenges. Yet, co-creating digital stories also has the power to transform those involved in producing them. This is the critical reflection of an interdisciplinary team of lecturers and students who produced their own contextually situated resources to spark conversations about, and public awareness of, land use classifications environmental issues in Aotearoa New Zealand. The resulting short film on land use and podcast series on environmental issues challenges us to imagine new human-environment futures and highlights the existing disconnects and constraints that have limited our ability to achieve them. This case study will be useful for others interested in creating similar projects.

Lessons From the COVID-19 Pandemic to Improve the Health, Social Care, and Well-being of Minoritized Ethnic Groups With Chronic Conditions or Impairments: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has inequitably impacted the experiences of people living with ill health/impairments or from minoritized ethnic groups across all areas of life. Given possible parallels in inequities for disabled people and people from minoritized ethnic backgrounds, their existence before the pandemic and increase since, and the discriminations that each group faces, our interest is in understanding the interplay between being disabled AND being from a minoritized ethnic group.ObjectiveThe overarching aim of the Coronavirus Chronic Conditions and Disabilities Awareness (CICADA) project, building on this understanding, is to improve pandemic and longer-term support networks, and access to and experiences of care, services, and resources for these underserved groups, both during the pandemic and longer term, thereby reducing inequities and enhancing social, health, and well-being outcomes.MethodsThis mixed methods study involves three “sweeps” of a new UK survey; secondary analyses of existing cohort and panel surveys; a rapid scoping review; a more granular review; and qualitative insights from over 200 semistructured interviews, including social network/map/photo elicitation methods and two subsequent sets of remote participatory research workshops. Separate stakeholder cocreation meetings, running throughout the study, will develop analyses and outputs. Our longitudinal study design enables the exploration of significant relationships between variables in the survey data collected and to the assessment of changes in variables over time, including consideration of varying pandemic contexts. The qualitative data will provide more granular detail. We will take a strengths and assets–based approach, underpinned by the social model of disability and by intersectional considerations to challenge discrimination. Our exploration of the social determinants of health and well-being is framed by the social ecological model.ResultsThe CICADA project was funded by the Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HSDR) Programme of the United Kingdom (UK) National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in March 2021 and began in May 2021. Further work within the project (84 interviews) was commissioned in March 2022, a substudy focusing on mental health, specifically in Northeast England, Greater Manchester, and the Northwest Coast of the United Kingdom. Data collection began in August 2021, with the last participants due to be recruited in September 2022. As of January 2022, 5792 survey respondents and 227 interviewees had provided data. From April 2022, the time of article submission, we will recruit participants for the substudy and wave 2 of the surveys and qualitative work. We expect results to be published by winter 2022.ConclusionsIn studying the experiences of disabled people with impairments and those living with chronic conditions who come from certain minoritized ethnic groups, we are aiming for transformative research to improve their health and well-being.International Registered Report Identifier (IRRID)DERR1-10.2196/38361

O-112 Fertility awareness: Educating the teenagers in europe

Abstract The term fertility awareness has been long associated with specific methods of family planning. Within the context of reproductive health and fertility issues, fertility awareness is a level of knowledge of the society on the topics of human reproduction system, fertility life cycle, possible threats to reproductive health and the ways of its protection. Moreover, as the birth rates have been continuously falling throughout Europe and the number of European citizens with fertility issues has increased during the last 50 years, fertility and infertility have been put into the spotlight for scientists, policy-makers, non-government organizations and other stakeholders. Therefore, the level of fertility awareness should be increased among all society groups. The main objective of the Fertility Awareness Project is to digitally reach teenagers aged 15-18 in various European countries in order to check their knowledge of fertility and to raise their awareness level. Fertility Awareness Project will follow a knowledge-based, holistic, systemic approach built on two pillars: collecting information and providing information. For this purpose, a digital tool will be developed to measure/increase fertility awareness and this tool will be disseminated in 4 selected European countries among teenagers aged 15-18, aiming to reach as many respondents as possible. After the data collection, a large effort will be devoted to evaluate the results based on the application usage by the target group. Thus, the Fertility Awareness Project will provide reliable information on the levels of fertility awareness among young people in Europe and the outcome of the project will help us to advocate for actions to promote fertility education on EU and national levels.

Agents of Change for Mental Health: A Survey of Young People’s Aspirations for Participation Across Five Low- and Middle-Income Countries

PurposeEffective intervention, policy, and research in mental health and well-being (MHWB) require young people to be understood not only as beneficiaries, but also as active agents in codesigning and implementing initiatives. To identify pathways for young people’s participation in promoting MHWB in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), this study surveyed young people’s aspirations for engagement, their spheres of influence, capacity building needs, and key barriers to participation. MethodsUsing U-Report, United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund’s social messaging tool and data collection platform, we distributed a short quantitative survey to a nonrepresentative, but large sample of young people aged 15–29 across five LMICs: Nigeria, Brazil, Jamaica, South Africa, and Burundi. ResultsA total of 42,689 young people responded, with representation from most or all provinces within each country. Participants’ average age was 23.8 years (SD = 3.77). Young people’s core aspirations were to join a mental health awareness project and to support their peers. Participants considered schools and community settings to be the most important spheres for engagement. Lack of information about mental health was the main perceived barrier to participation, and mental health classes the main training need. DiscussionIn many countries, MHWB is not taught or discussed in schools and youth-led mental health interventions are rare. Findings from this study reveal clear aspirations for participatory engagement to promote MHWB among young people in LMICs. To support meaningful participation, policymakers and youth service providers must ensure that young people have access to mental health literacy training and opportunities to raise awareness in schools or community settings.

Authentic cultural communication: A collaborative Intercampus Cultural Awareness Project

This investigation acknowledges and explores the cultural differences within the Costa Rican society by performing a cultural awareness project with university students from the same course but in different regions of the country. It will outline from both the professors and the students’ perspectives how the project was successful and effectively met the course objectives. Through a quantitative analysis, this article claims that inter-campus projects present an authentic opportunity for successful intercultural communication and also significant opportunities for collaborative teaching.

We are qualified to prescribe and administer opioids. We are also trained to manage opioid side-effects, including overdose, and provide naloxone and resuscitation. As an anesthesiologist and mom, I rescued my opioid-overdosing son successfully on multiple occasions. Just imagine the emotions felt performing rescue maneuvers on your child, or conversely being unskilled and not knowing what to do until help arrives. Ultimately, on the crest of this wave of opioid destruction, both of my sons succumbed to this addiction. I am not alone in this loss. Tens of thousands of parents have suffered such devastating circumstances. We have reached a critical point of this national anguish. Improving the College-Going Process of Nursing Education for African American Students.

The lack of diversity in the nursing workforce is concerning. Because schools of nursing play an important role in diversifying the nursing workforce, effective strategies must be developed to feed the pipeline. One such strategy is mentoring. The Diversity in Nursing Awareness Project was a mentoring program developed to assist African American students and their parents through the college-going process of nursing education. The aim of the program was not only to bring awareness of nursing as viable career option but also to increase acceptance and enrollment rates of African Americans into baccalaureate degree nursing programs.

Enterpreneurial Talent and Intention Among Undergraduate Students: Case Study at English Language Education Department

Entrepreneurship plays an important role in generating new wealth in an economy. The growth of entrepreneurial activities will produce innovation, create new jobs for the society, trigger economic growth, and reduce unemployment rates. Eentrepreneurship is a topic requiring a lot of attentions from academicians and researchers, especially the unemployment problem arising among undergraduate students. Therefore, the aim of this article was to have a good understanding on entrepreneurial talent and intention of undergraduate university students. The antecedent factor would be measuring students’ risk taking, persuading, ambition, performer, leadership, and business management skill behavior. The subjects of the study were undergraduate students who are majoring in English at the language education department and have attended five days workshop on economic literacy program conducted by Global Economic Awareness Project (GEAP) in 2019 academic year. This research study used quantative method and a research designed survey was administered to gather questions with answers associated with a 5-point Likert scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The questionnaires of the research used Fishbein and Ajzen’s Planned Behavior (TPB) theory, Shaver and Scott’s personal traits, and Bandura’s Self efficacy theory. The findings of the research reveal that ‘risk taking’ and ‘ambition’ factor had favorable results after students have attended short entrepreneurial course. Whereas, students’ still says “neutral” on ‘persuader’, ‘ambitious’, ‘performer’, ‘leadership’, and ‘business management factor’. It is safe to assume that students’ still had fair intention in developing their entrepreneurial interest because they have little to no experience on entreprenurial field in hand. Explicit real-life entrepreneurship related activities were recommended for future workshop to upgrade the student’s entrepreneurship talent and intention.

Abstract 376: Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes and Cardiovascular Risks Multi-disciplinary Awareness Project

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one cause of death amongst women. There has been much effort put forth over the past decade in reducing both the incidence and prevalence of this disease burden through screening and treating the traditional risk factors. Recent guidelines have shown that adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), including pre-eclampsia (PEC), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-term birth (PTB) have been associated with future maternal CVD risk. Much of the current literature focuses almost exclusively on PEC. Our investigation is more comprehensive, covering not only these other APOs but assessing whether providers of multiple specialties in our community are aware of the APO to CVD risk association. The primary objective of this study was to investigate if there exist any knowledge gaps regarding the progression from APO to CVD and if this knowledge varies by specialty. Methods: An anonymous voluntary survey through REDCap© was sent to providers in the fields of Internal medicine (IM, 21%), Family medicine (FM, 26%), Obstetrics-Gynecology (Ob-Gyn, 23%) and Cardiology (30%) who have been in practice for greater than five years in our local Gainesville community. This project was registered as a QI project and descriptive analysis was used to examine the responses. Results: A total of 53 providers responded to the survey. Despite having the majority of patients being women, Ob-Gyn was the least likely amongst all specialties to routinely screen for CV risk factors. However, when addressed, they were the most likely to ask about APOs. Cardiologists, despite declaring to be aware of the association between APOs and CV risk, were least likely to ask about APOs. All specialties recognized PEC and GDM as APOs linked to long-term maternal CV risk but failed to associate PTB as an APO. The majority of providers amongst IM, FM, and Cardiology did not ask about APOs and lacked the knowledge of how often to appropriately screen for secondary risk factors associated with APOs. Additionally, these providers outright admitted that they are not familiar with the current AHA and/or ACOG guidelines for screening and follow-up. Conclusion: Descriptive statistical analysis of our data suggests that there exists a notable knowledge gap between all four specialties investigated in our survey. Education concerning the link between APOs and future maternal CV risk is needed amongst all specialties, especially amongst the providers in Cardiology, IM, and FM. Targeted efforts at our institution to improve awareness of all APOs, their associated secondary risk factors, and appropriate screening is required in all specialties to help reduce CVD morbidity and mortality.

Rheumatological care in rural areas : The Rheuma-Bus project 2018.

To explore the medical care of individuals in rural areas during apublic health awareness project on musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Atour bus was adapted to accommodate rheumatological consultations at widely accessible sites in 16towns, providing individual medical advice with respect to MSD. The participating rheumatologists assessed the nature (e.g. inflammatory/non inflammatory), extent and duration of MSD and, where possible, made atentative diagnosis and gave further advice on the course of action. In addition, age, sex and pre-existing care were recorded. All individuals were asked to assess their own severity of pain using anumeric ordinal scale from "no" (0) to "extreme" (10). A total of 647 individuals visited the service. Median current pain intensity was 5 (interquartile range [IQR]3-6), mean 4.9 (standard deviation [SD] 2.3). Osteoarthritis was suspected in 381 clients (59.6%), inflammatory rheumatic disease in 247 (38.7%), and in 104 (16.3%) other diseases. 307 (50%) were treated by aGP, 95 (15.5%) were under orthopaedic care, 204 (33.2%) under rheumatological care and 81 (13.1%) under supervision of other specialists. 104 clients (17%) had never consulted aphysician for their MSD symptoms before. 27 (4.2%) of all the clients had anewly detected inflammatory rheumatic disease and 62 (9.6%) patients with suspected inflammatory rheumatic disease were not under previous rheumatological care. The findings showed that there is still alot of negligence in awareness and knowledge of rheumatic diseases, at least in rural areas.
