Mapping seamless monthly XCO2 in East Asia: Utilizing OCO-2 data and machine learning

High spatial resolution XCO2 data is key to investigating the mechanisms of carbon sources and sinks. However, current carbon satellites have a narrow swath and uneven observation points, making it difficult to obtain seamless and full-coverage data. We propose a novel method combining extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to construct the relationship between OCO-2 XCO2 data and auxiliary data (i.e., vegetation, meteorological, anthropogenic emissions, and LST data), and to map the seamless monthly XCO2 concentration in East Asia from 2015 to 2020. Validation results based on TCCON ground station data demonstrate the high accuracy of the model with an average R2 of 0.93, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.33 and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.24 % in five sites. The results show that the average atmospheric XCO2 concentration in East Asia shows a continuous increasing trend from 2015 to 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 2.21 ppm/yr. This trend is accompanied by clear seasonal variations, with the highest XCO2 concentration in winter and the lowest in summer. Additionally, anthropogenic activities contributed significantly to XCO2 concentrations, which were higher in urban areas. These findings highlight the dynamics of regional XCO2 concentrations over time and their association with human activities. This study provides a detailed examination of XCO2 distribution and trends in East Asia, enhancing our comprehension of atmospheric CO2 dynamics.

Effects of enriched CO2, temperature, and irrigation on soil properties in greenhouse apple tree cultivation

The significant contributions of anthropogenic activity to global warming are evidenced by the increasing average atmospheric temperatures and CO2 concentration. To date, data on the impact of global warming on crops, particularly field-scale fruit growth and the soil environment, remain lacking. Therefore, we conducted a 4-year monitoring experiment on semi-closed apple tree populations cultivated under the present or near-future climate to assess the effects of atmospheric temperature and CO2 concentrations on soil moisture, temperature, and inorganic ion concentration. Apple saplings were grown in three independent environment-controlled greenhouses, namely greenhouses A (GH_A; control), B (GH_B; high-temperature), and C (GH_C; high-temperature and high CO2), representing climate modification experiments. The pH increased by 0.02, 0.20, and 0.12/year for GH_A, GH_B, and GH_C, respectively. In particular, GH_B (standard irrigation plot; STD) showed a significant pH increase of 0.25/year. The EC increased by 0.014 mS/cm/year for GH_A, decreased by -0.010 mS/cm/year for GH_B, and increased by 0.006 mS/cm/year for GH_C, showing no clear overall increasing or decreasing trend. The NO3 concentration increased by 1.2 mg/L/year for GH_A, decreased by 10.2 mg/L/year for GH_B and decreased by 0.7 mg/L/year for GH_C. The apparent activation energy (Ea) ranged from 85.3 to 214.4 (kJ/mol NH4+) and, regardless of watering treatment, GH_A > GH_B > GH_C. The values in STD plots were 1.4 to 1.7 times those in abundant irrigation plots. Using GH_A (STD) as a standard, the soil temperature dependence of the nitrification rate did not change overall at high or low air temperatures with increasing watering (Ea = 150.5 kJ/mol) or heating (Ea = 154.1 kJ/mol). The soil temperature dependence of the nitrification rate did not vary under heating and increased watering (Ea = 89.5 kJ/mol) or under heating, increased watering, and increased CO2 (Ea = 85.3 kJ/mol). This study provides novel insights into determining the environmental impacts of apple tree community soils under near-future climatic conditions.

Atmospheric black carbon in a key location of the Chilean Central Andes: Identifying patterns, sources, and potential impacts

Black carbon (BC) has been identified as one of the primary contributors to climate change, primarily due to its exceptional capacity to absorb solar radiation. This leads to a reduction in the albedo of ice and snow surfaces, consequently accelerating their melting. In this work, measurements of atmospheric BC are presented, carried out from October 2016 to December 2019 in Portillo, Chilean Central Andes, in the NUNATAK-1 laboratory refuge (3000 m.a.s.l). This site is close to the Chile-Argentina border and is situated along a heavily trafficked road connecting the two countries. Owing to weather conditions, this route operates on a seasonal schedule, remaining open 24 h during warmer months, while in winter, traffic is restricted to the hours between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Access to vehicles is prohibited during periods of heavy snowfall. BC concentrations were continuously monitored by a Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP). The variability and temporal cycles of BC levels were investigated in relation to local vehicular activity and meteorological parameters, through multiple linear regression analysis. Results show that vehicular traffic variations led to a systematic pattern in the atmospheric BC measured, with a preponderant role of meteorological factors. During the summer months, BC levels reached their peak (mean of 0.77 μg m−3), with maximum values recorded during the nighttime and early morning hours. In line with this finding, summer counted the highest number of vehicles circulating in the area. In contrast, the winter months exhibited lower average BC atmospheric concentrations compared to summer months (0.35 μg m−3), characterized by a distinct hourly profile. In a complementary way, forward trajectories using the HYSPLIT model were performed for various meteorological conditions. The findings indicated that emissions from the study area had the potential to extend to neighboring glaciers. This impact on the basins' hydrology, vital and fragile components of the Andean region, magnifies climate change effects in these cryospheric zones. Notably, the latest IPCC report highlights limited research on aerosol effects on mountain snow and glaciers. This study also presents the first estimates of high-altitude BC source assessments in Chile and South America. These insights could enhance global atmospheric models in mountainous regions, enhancing their accuracy and utility.

Spatial and temporal patterns of organophosphate Esters flame retardants and plasticizers in airborne particles over the Mediterranean sea

We studied the co-occurrence of OPEs and other constituents in atmospheric particles at the two edges of the Mediterranean Sea, under the influence of the transport of polluted air from Europe and dust from the Sahara. The highest OPE concentrations were observed during the summer period in the East Mediterranean and in spring for the NW Mediterranean. The total average atmospheric concentration of Σ6OPEs in the NW Mediterranean was 2103 ± 2020 pg m−3 (n = 23) with EHDPP and TCPP to be the predominant OPEs, accounting on average for 46% and 37% of the total Ʃ6OPEs concentrations, respectively. The average concentration of Σ6OPEs in East Mediterranean was 156.4 ± 170.3 pg m−3 (n = 67) with TCPP showing the highest concentration (116.1 ± 92.8 pg m−3), followed by TCEP (67.5 ± 55.8 pg m−3). In both areas, OPEs were mostly associated with fossil fuel combustion and road traffic, while the air masses from Saharan desert influenced the concentration of EHDPP, TCEP in NW Mediterranean and the TCEP concentration levels in the East Mediterranean. The total annual deposition of reported OPEs to the Mediterranean basin was estimated to be 584 tonnes, accounting for about 8.5% of the total deposited anthropogenic phosphorus.

Spatio-temporal variability of Atmospheric CO2 and CH4 concentrations over Antarctica using Ground and Space-based measurements

The present study reports on the variability of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations over Antarctica using data collected during the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 as part of the Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA). During the austral summer (January–March), this study examined the spatio-temporal variability in atmospheric CO2 and CH4 concentrations at the Indian Antarctic Stations (IAS). An average atmospheric CO2 concentration was observed to be 396.25 ± 4.20 ppm at Bharati station during 2015-16 austral summer period, whereas CO2 (CH4) concentrations were 398.7 ± 0.46 ppm (1780 ± 2 ppb) and 399.1 ± 0.41 ppm (1780 ± 3 ppb) at Bharati and Maitri stations, respectively during 2016–17. During the study period, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) based column averaged CO2 concentration shows similar values against records. At Bharati and Maitri, the diurnal amplitudes of CO2 (CH4) are varied from 0.11 ppm (0.37 ppb) to 8.90 ppm (11.44 ppb) and 0.54 ppm (1.96 ppb) to 7.30 ppm (16 ppb), respectively. In the austral summer, dominant winds at the IAS are from the east, northeast, and southeast.

Gas–particle partitioning of organophosphate esters in indoor and outdoor air and its implications for individual exposure

The extensive utilization of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has resulted in their widespread presence in the environment, raising concerns about potential human health risks. In this study, 13 OPEs were analyzed in both gas and particle phases as well as in indoor and outdoor atmospheric environments. Moreover, human exposure to OPEs were investigated within a university environment, focusing on forehead contact and individual PM2.5 inhalation. The results showed similar distribution patterns of OPEs indoors and outdoors, although higher concentrations were found indoors. The average atmospheric concentration of ∑OPEs (combining particle and gaseous OPEs) was 1575 pg/m3 in the outdoor environment and 6574 pg/m3 ∑OPEs in the indoor microenvironments. The overwhelming majority of OPEs exhibit a pronounced propensity to adsorb onto PM2.5 particles. Notably, the concentration of OPEs on the forehead differed significantly from that in the atmospheric environment, whereas individual PM2.5 exposure was consistent with the concentration of indoor PM2.5. Intriguingly, some OPEs with high octanol–water partition coefficient (log Kow) were not detected in the environment but found on human foreheads. Gas-particle partitioning was predicted using the Harner–Bidleman and Li–Ma–Yang models and the results were in agreement with the monitoring data for approximately half of the OPE monomers. Correlations between OPEs exposure and gas-particle partitioning were found to be more significant for novel OPEs. No non-cancer risk to humans through individual exposure to OPEs was identified via forehead exposure or inhalation. The previously unreported relationship between individual exposure and the environmental occurrence of traditional and novel OPEs demonstrated in this study highlights the importance of evaluating the potential health risks associated with actual OPE exposure.

Modelling land use/land cover (LULC) change dynamics, future prospects, and its environmental impacts based on geospatial data models and remote sensing data.

The dynamic change in land use/land cover (LULC) caused by rapid urbanizationhas become a major concern in Lahore, causing a variety of socioeconomic and environmental issues relating to air quality. As a result, it is important to monitor existing LULC change detection, future projection, and the increase in atmospheric pollutants in Lahore. This research work makes use of Landsat, GIOVANNI, SRTM DEM, and vector data. The four key steps of the research approach are as follows: (i) LULC classification from 2000 to 2020 using Lansat data and semi-automatic classification plugin (SCP); (ii) simulation of future prediction using Modules of Land Use Change Evaluation (MOLUSCE) prediction model; (iii) assessment of effects of land use change on air quality using GIOVANNI-NASA product; and (iv) monitoring, change detection, and result interpretation. According to the research findings, there was an increase in metropolitan areas and a decrease in vegetation, barren land, and water bodies for both historical and future projections. The findings also indicated that from 2000 to 2020, about 27.41% of the urban area expanded, with a decline of 42.13% in vegetation, 2.3% in the barren land, and 6.51% in water bodies, respectively. Between 2020 and 2040, the urban area is predicted to increase by 23.15%, while vegetation, barren land, and water bodies are expected to decrease by 28.05%, 1.8%, and 12.31%, respectively. Also, the atmospheric pollutants have been increased including NO2 (1.60%), SO2 (1.02%), CO2 (0.71%), CO (1.56%), O3 (0.15%), and CH4 (0.20%), respectively. And it is projected that by 2040, the average annual atmospheric concentration of NO2, SO2, CO2, CO, O3, and CH4 will be increased by 28.80%, 18.36%, 12.78%, 28.08%, 2.70%, and 3.60%, respectively. In addition, it was also observed that the majority of the city's urban area expansion was found in the city's eastern and southern regions. Therefore, government should focus on natural resource conservation especially vegetation cover to reduce air pollutants concentration and the LULC effect.

Southeastern Brazil inland tropicalization: Köppen system applied for detecting climate change throughout 100years of meteorological observed data.

Many regions around the world are facing climate changes, with substantial increase in air temperature over the past decades, which is mainly related to continental and global warming forced by the higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The objectives of this study were to use the Köppen climate classification to detect local climate change based on a historical series of 100 years and to assess if such change is related to those that are occurring in other spatial scales as a likely consequence of increasing GHG. This paper brings a content full of innovative results. The study area presented an average annual air temperature increase by 0.9 °C between 1917 and 2016, rising from 21.4 °C for the first climatological normal (1917–1946) to 22.3 °C for the last one (1987–2016). Furthermore, in the summer months, the temperature rose from 24.5 to 25.3 °C, and in the winter months, such increase was from 17.1 (1917–1946) to 18.3 °C (1987–2016). Our findings showed the subtropical conditions (Cfa in Köppen’s classification) in the study area persisted from the beginning of the analysis (1917–1946) until the climatological normal of 1979–2008, with a clear tendency of tropicalization after that with a change in the climate type of Piracicaba from subtropical to tropical, which can now be classified as tropical with dry winter (Aw climate type). The local average air temperature showed concordances with the long-term air temperature anomalies from regional, continental, and global scales, indicating that all of them may be linked with increasing GHG emissions, since well-defined long-term linear relationships (r2 = 0.99) were observed between continental and global average air temperature anomalies and atmospheric CO2 concentration observed at the NOAA Lab in Mauna Loa in the last 59 years. While the local and regional forcing effects remain to be fully unraveled, our study provided a valid and strong scientific sound evidence that climate change occurred in Piracicaba, southeastern Brazil, in the last 100 years.

The first simultaneous and continuous underway measurements of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury, carbon dioxide and methane in the marine boundary layer: Results of cruise study in the Sea of Japan in May 2018

This paper presents the results of the first simultaneous measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and greenhouse gases (CH4 and CO2) in the marine boundary layer over the Sea of Japan. Continuous underway measurements of atmospheric GEM, CH4 and CO2 concentrations were carried out aboard the R/V Akademik M.A. Lavrentiev from 4 to May 26, 2018. GEM concentrations (range: 0.4–1.6 ng/m3; mean ± standard deviation (SD): 1.0 ± 0.2 ng/m3; N = 938) were lower than both the atmospheric background and previously observed values in this area. Concentrations of CH4 (range: 1922.6–2010.6 ppb; mean ± SD: 1942.2 ± 10.8 ppb) and CO2 (range: 408.9–436.1 ppm; mean ± SD: 412.5 ± 2.5 ppm) were higher than both the average global atmospheric concentrations in May, and the average annual values. Concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis highlighted the Korean peninsula, northeastern China, southern Primorsky Krai (Russia) and the southwestern coast of Hokkaido (Japan) as potential source areas influencing atmospheric GEM, CH4 and CO2 concentrations during the cruise. Vertical distribution of the CWT values for all the measured gaseous species identified the lower atmosphere up to 1000 m as source layer. The same layer was also characterized by lower CWT values for CH4 and CO2, which were associated with atmospheric transport from the central part of the Sea of Japan. With increasing altitude, the CWT values for GEM and CH4 decreased, while the CO2 values began to rise from 2000 m reflecting the respiration of terrestrial ecosystems and, possibly, atmospheric transport from fires in western Russia.The study shows potential source regions influencing GEM, CH4 and CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere over the Sea of Japan in May 2018.

Water soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) in atmospheric particles over East Mediterranean: The importance of dust and biomass burning events

The importance of dust and biomass burning episodes on the atmospheric concentration of water-soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) was determined in the eastern Mediterranean. SRP was measured with a new rapid real-time automated analytical system with a time resolution of a few minutes per sample and with an extremely low detection limit. The average atmospheric concentration of SRP during the sampling campaign was estimated at 0.35 ± 0.25 (median 0.30) nmol P m−3. The maximum concentration of SRP (3.08 nmol P m−3) was recorded during an intense dust episode, and was almost ten times higher than the campaign average, confirming that Saharan dust was an important primary source of bioavailable P to the eastern Mediterranean, especially during the spring period when 60% of the events occurred. Predicted increases in the frequency and intensity of dust storms in the area will enhance the role of the atmosphere as a source of bioavailable P for the Mediterranean marine ecosystem. During the warm period, when Northerly winds prevailed, biomass burning processes contributed significantly to soluble phosphorus delivered from atmospheric sources to the eastern Mediterranean. These inputs during warm periods are especially important for the Eastern Mediterranean, where biological productivity is strongly limited by nutrient availability.

How Likely Are Snowball Episodes Near the Inner Edge of the Habitable Zone?

Abstract Understanding when global glaciations occur on Earth-like planets is a major challenge in climate evolution research. Most models of how greenhouse gases like CO2 evolve with time on terrestrial planets are deterministic, but the complex, nonlinear nature of Earth’s climate history motivates study of nondeterministic climate models. Here a maximally simple stochastic model of CO2 evolution and climate on an Earth-like planet with an imperfect CO2 thermostat is investigated. It is shown that as stellar luminosity is increased in this model, the decrease in the average atmospheric CO2 concentration renders the climate increasingly unstable, with excursions to a low-temperature state common once the received stellar flux approaches that of present-day Earth. Unless climate feedbacks always force the variance in CO2 concentration to decline rapidly with received stellar flux, this means that terrestrial planets near the inner edge of the habitable zone may enter Snowball states quite frequently. Observations of the albedos and color variation of terrestrial-type exoplanets should allow this prediction to be tested directly in the future.

Preseismic atmospheric radon anomaly associated with 2018 Northern Osaka earthquake

Despite the challenges in identifying earthquake precursors in intraplate (inland) earthquakes, various hydrological and geochemical measurements have been conducted to establish a possible link to seismic activities. Anomalous increases in radon (222Rn) concentration in soil, groundwater, and atmosphere have been reported prior to large earthquakes. Although the radon concentration in the atmosphere is lower than that in groundwater and soils, a recent statistical analysis has suggested that the average atmospheric concentration over a relatively wide area reflects crustal deformation. However, no study has sought to determine the underlying physico-chemical relationships between crustal deformation and anomalous atmospheric radon concentrations. Here, we show a significant decrease in the atmospheric radon concentration temporally linked to the seismic quiescence before the 2018 Northern Osaka earthquake occurring at a hidden fault with complex rupture dynamics. During seismic quiescence, deep-seated sedimentary layers in Osaka Basin, which might be the main sources of radon, become less damaged and fractured. The reduction in damage leads to a decrease in radon exhalation to the atmosphere near the fault, causing the preseismic radon decrease in the atmosphere. Herein, we highlight the necessity of continuous monitoring of the atmospheric radon concentration, combined with statistical anomaly detection method, to evaluate future seismic risks.

Regional collagen turnover and composition of the human patellar tendon.

Tendon pathology (tendinopathy) typically occurs in specific regions of a tendon, and growth in response to exercise also appears to be more pronounced in specific regions. In a previous study in animals we found evidence of regional differences in tendon turnover, but whether the turnover of human patellar tendon differs in different regions still remains unknown. Patellar tendons were obtained from cadavers of healthy men and women (body donation program, n = 5 donors, >60 yr of age). Samples were taken from 10 different regions along the length, width, and thickness of the tendon. Turnover was measured by 14C bomb pulse dating and also estimated from the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) by fluorescence (340/460 nm) in addition to measurement of specific AGEs by mass spectrometry. Composition in terms of collagen, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and DNA was also assessed in each region. 14C results showed that all tendon regions had a similar 14C concentration, which was equal to the average atmospheric 14C concentration during the first 15 yr of the person's life. Fluorescence normalized to dry weight did not differ between regions, nor did specific AGEs. Higher GAG content was observed in the proximal and near the distal insertion of the tendon. In conclusion, healthy human patellar tendon displays no regional differences in collagen turnover throughout life.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Tendon injuries and tendinopathies typically occur in specific regions of the tendon, but the reason for this specificity is not well understood. A potential factor in injury susceptibility is tissue turnover, and previous work suggests that the tendon core has practically no turnover during adult life; however, it is not known whether this is true for other regions of the tendon. Our present results on healthy human patellar tendon clearly demonstrate that turnover does not differ between regions and thereby cannot explain differences in injury susceptibility. The findings also indicate that all regions of the tendon are formed simultaneously during skeletal maturation and do not turn over appreciably during adulthood. This is an important finding because little is known about tendon growth during maturation in humans.

Autonomous Changes in the Concentration of Water Vapor Drive Climate Change

When compared to the average annual global temperature record from 1880, no published climate model posited on the assumption that the increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide is the driver of climate change can accurately replicate the significant variability in the annual temperature record. Therefore, new principles of atmospheric physics are developed for determining changes in the average annual global temperature based on changes in the average atmospheric concentration of water vapor. These new principles prove that: 1) Changes in average global temperature are not driven by changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide; 2) Instead, autonomous changes in the concentration of water vapor, ΔTPW, drive changes in water vapor heating, thus, the average global temperature, ΔTAvg, in accordance with this principle, ΔTAvg=0.4ΔTPW the average accuracy of which is ±0.14%, when compared to the variable annual, 1880-2019, temperature record; 3) Changes in the concentration of water vapor and changes in water vapor heating are not a feedback response to changes in the concentration of CO2; 4) Rather, increases in water vapor heating and increases in the concentration of water vapor drive each other in an autonomous positive feedback loop; 5) This feedback loop can be brought to a halt if the average global rate of precipitation can be brought into balance with the average global rate of evaporation and maintained there; and, 6) The recent increases in average global temperature can be reversed, if average global precipitation can be increased sufficiently to slightly exceed the average rate of evaporation.

Investigating ammonia emissions in a coastal urban airshed using stable isotope techniques

Increases in reactive nitrogen (N) production and consumption have caused ammonia (NH3) emissions to the atmosphere to increase up to five times since the industrial revolution, resulting in negative impacts on the environment and human health. Understanding regional NH3 emissions and atmospheric dynamics is essential for creating realistic mitigation strategies. This study utilized stable isotope techniques to quantify and characterize NH3 emissions in a coastal urban air shed (i.e., Corpus Christi, TX, U.S.A.). NH3 was then passively collected at eight sites from September 2016 through August 2017 and analyzed for isotopic composition. The average atmospheric NH3 concentration for the region was 1.24 ± 0.98 μg/m3 with mean and concentration-weighted mean δ15N-NH3 values of −19.1 ± 12.7‰ and −17.1‰ respectively. The mixing model IsoError was used for source attribution, indicating that ambient NH3 was equally influenced by non-agricultural (55 ± 6%) and agricultural (45 ± 6%) emission sources with some seasonal variation. Sites adjacent to large water bodies exhibited low [NH3] coupled with a significant influence from non-agriculture emissions indicating a possible influence from marine-sourced NH3 which was further investigated using a three endmember SIAR bayesian mixing model. This work also examined the effects that varying degrees of kinetic and equilibrium fractionation via PM2.5 formation may have had on the δ15N-NH3(g) values observed in this study. A practical scenario assuming competing equilibrium and kinetic effects was used to calculate the δ15N-NH3(g) value of the original NH3 gas before fractionation occurred and calculated mean and concentration-weighted mean δ15N-NH3 for the region were −21.5 ± 12.4‰ and –22.3‰ respectively with no significant changes in source attribution. This work has shown that agricultural and non-agricultural sources of NH3 can equally contribute to ambient NH3 in urban environments and that marine NH3 must be taken into consideration when performing emission inventories in coastal regions.

Estimation of the atmospheric greenhouse gas spatial distribution in the Arctic using a back trajectory model

We present a method and results of the retrieval of average effective fields of atmospheric impurity concentration using a passive wind sensing (remote sensing) numeric technology referred to as Fluid Location of the Atmosphere (FLA). The quasi‐two‐dimensional problem of reconstruction of the spatial distribution of the greenhouse gases assuming the diffusion Peclet number infinitely large was solved numerically. The study is based on in‐situ measurements of the atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide during the expeditions to Belyy Island in the Kara Sea in July and August of 2016 to 2017. The differences and common features of CH4 and CO2 spatial distribution in this region of the Arctic during specified periods were analyzed. CH4 concentrations tended to decrease with moving from the continent to the remote sea areas. For CO2 on the contrary, lower values were observed over the continent, and they increased with a distance from the coastline. For both greenhouse gases, average atmospheric concentrations increased in 2017 relative to 2016.

Evaluation of the Oxidation Flow Reactor for particulate matter emission limit certification

As secondary aerosols become larger fractions of ambient PM2.5, emission factors and source profiles need to reflect the photochemical aging of multipollutant emissions that account for changes in transport between source and receptor. Oxidation Flow Reactors (OFR) intend to simulate gas/particle transformation and volatilization with time-scales of hours to days in order to estimate mass gains or losses due to atmospheric aging. The commercially-available Potential Aerosol Mass (PAM)-OFR (Aerodyne Research, LLC, Billerica, MA, USA) is evaluated for its feasibility in establishing an emission limit certification protocol for China and for determining changes to source marker abundances used in source apportionment model applications. The OFR without ultraviolet radiation is reasonably inert to the passage of reactive gases, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particles >~100 nm. The largest uncertainty in estimating aging times is the commonly used assumption that the average atmospheric hydroxyl concentration (OHatm) is 1.5 × 106 molecules/cm3; measurements show that OHatm can vary by an order of magnitude in different environments. OH exposures (OHexp) estimated within the OFR are more precise than this assumption. Plug flow is a reasonable estimate of residence time within the OFR, as it does not differ much from the weighted-mean of the residence time distribution. A survey of previous studies shows that only a few examine the PAM-OFR performance, and that mass is both gained and lost with aging, depending on the combustion fuels, burning conditions, and aging times. At present, the OFR appears to be more practical for source profile aging than for emission certification, and further experiments are needed prior to application for multipollutant effects on particulate emission rates.

Stone coal as a potential atmospheric mercury source in Da-Ba-Shan mountain areas, China

Mercury (Hg) emissions from stone coal that formed from marine lower organisms in the late Proterozoic and early Paleozoic have not been paid much attention in China. In this research, Hg concentrations in different fueled coals (stone coal, humic coal) and charcoal that derived from wood and paired slags, atmospheric Hg emissions and atmospheric Hg levels were studied in Shaanxi province, China. The average Hg concentration in stone coal produced in Da-Ba-Shan mountain areas in Southern Shaanxi was 539.4 μg·kg−1, about 15 and 38 times higher than that of humic coal (36.0 μg·kg−1) and charcoal (14.2 μg·kg−1), respectively. Atmospheric Hg emission usually lasted for 2–3 h after fueling stone coal, with the majority of Hg emitted during the first 1 h. 95.5–99.4% of Hg in the fuel would be lost into the atmosphere for three types of fuels. Mercury emission factor (MEF) of stone coal was 40–120 times higher than those of humic coal and charcoal based on heat value. Average atmospheric Hg concentration at 0.5 m above the stove could reach 1600–2000 ng·m−3 if burning stone coal, which exceeded the standards for residential ambient air (200–300 ng·m−3) by 5–10 times and also was nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of burning humic coal (20–60 ng·m−3). Health risk would be a concern for local residents who depend on stone coal for cooking and heating but without any control measures of flue gas. In Shaanxi province alone, Hg emission through domestic combustion of stone coal was estimated to be 1.34 Mg in 2011. Higher mercury emission amounts are possible in southern China where stone coal has been intensively used. Total mercury emissions from this source category need to be further investigated on the national scale.

Characteristics of environmentally persistent free radicals in PM2.5: Concentrations, species and sources in Xi'an, Northwestern China

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a new class of environmental risk substances that can stably exist in atmospheric particles and pose a potential threat to human health. In this study, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used to study the concentration levels, species characteristics, and sources of EPFRs in PM2.5 in Xi'an in 2017. The results showed that the concentrations of EPFRs in PM2.5 in Xi'an in 2017 ranged from 9.8 × 1011 to 6.9 × 1014 spins/m3. The highest concentration of EPFRs occurred in winter when the average concentration was 2.1 × 1014 spins/m3. The lowest concentration of EPFRs occurred in autumn when the average concentration was 7.0 × 1013 spins/m3. According to the annual average atmospheric concentration of EPFRs, the amount of EPFRs inhaled by people in Xi'an is equivalent to approximately 5 cigarettes per person per day and approximately 23 cigarettes per person per day in winter when haze occurs. The results of the study on the EPFR characteristics show that the EPFRs in PM2.5 in Xi'an are mainly C-center organic radicals that are primarily non-decaying types, accounting for approximately 75% and 85% of total concentration of EPFRs in autumn and winter, respectively. Finally, a correlation analysis was used to explore the origins of EPFRs in PM2.5. Significant positive correlations were found between EPFRs and SO2, NO2 and the thermally derived OC3 and OC4 carbonaceous components. The results suggested that coal-fired and traffic may be important sources of EPFRs in PM2.5 in Xi'an. In addition, EPFRs are significantly positively correlated with O3 in summer, suggesting that some EPFRs may also originate from secondary processes. This study provides important basic data and evidence for further assessments of the potential health risks of EPFRs in PM2.5 and the development of effective air pollution control measures.

Simulation of Urban Growth and Urban Living Environment with Release of the Green Belt

Green belts in developing or developed countries have been released because city-center development has reached a saturation point, and the strict protections and restrictions within green belts has led to an increase in opposition from local residents and property owners. However, green belt release has led to urban growth within the associated regions and cities, resulting in an increase in the temperature and the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere. We intend to prove quantitatively the effect of the release of green belts at the local level based on the interactions among land cover, climate, and air quality and to provide information for policy decisions accordingly. Our simulation results show that the urban areas of Jeju and Chuncheon, in South Korea, where green belts have been completely released, will increase by up to 21.83% by 2025 and 123.93% by 2020, respectively, compared to areas that have retained green belts. The simulations also show that the surface temperature within the released region of Jeju and Chuncheon will increase by up to 0.83% by 2025 and 0.03% by 2020, respectively. The average atmospheric concentrations within the released region of Jeju and Chuncheon were modelled to increase by up to 256.93% by 2025 and 337.29% by 2020, respectively.
