Improved Variable Structure Interacting Multimodels for Target Trajectory Tracking and Extrapolation

To improve the lengthy computation time of conventional variable structure interacting multiple model (VSIMM) algorithm and increase the precision of target prediction and extrapolation, the target state and flight intent information captured by the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) are used as the model’s prior information; combining this information with VSIMM theoretical framework, we purpose an intent variable structure interacting multiple model (INT-VSIMM) algorithm. Firstly, the motion pattern of the target in the flight phase of the flight path is decomposed, and complete sets of motion models are established. Secondly, according to the principle of directed graph switching, a model set switching method is designed, which is mainly based on “hard” switching and supplemented by “soft” switching. Finally, the INT-VSIMM algorithm is used to track the trajectory of the target aircraft, and short-term trajectory extrapolation is performed based on the target state estimation. The simulation results show that the target tracking performance computational time based on the INT-VSIMM algorithm is superior to the comparative existing methods, and the extrapolated trajectory has less error in the short term, which can satisfy the needs of conflict detection.

Domestic and international aviation emission inventories for the UNFCCC parties

Global aviation emissions have been growing despite international efforts to limit climate change. Quantifying the status quo of domestic and international aviation emissions is necessary for establishing an understanding of current emissions and their mitigation. Yet, a majority of the United Nations framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC)-ratifying parties have infrequently disclosed aviation emissions within the international framework, if at all. Here, we present a set of national aviation emission and fuel burn inventories for these 197 individual parties, as calculated by the high-resolution aviation transport emissions assessment model (AviTeam) model. In addition to CO2 emissions, the AviTeam model calculates pollutant emissions, including NOx, SOx, unburnt hydrocarbons, black carbon, and organic carbon. Emission inventories are created in aggregated and gridded format and rely on Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast combined with schedule data. The cumulative global fuel burn is estimated at 291 Tg for the year 2019. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 920 Tg, with 306 Tg originating from domestic aviation. We present emissions from 151 countries that have yet to report their emissions for 2019, which sum to 417 TgCO2. The improved availability of national emissions data facilitated by this inventory could support mitigation efforts in developed and developing countries and shows that such tools could bolster sector reporting to the UNFCCC.

TTSAD: TCN-Transformer-SVDD Model for Anomaly Detection in air traffic ADS-B data

ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) is a key technology in the new generation air traffic surveillance system. However, it is vulnerable to various cyber attacks because it broadcasts data in plaintext format and lacks authentication mechanism. Previous research has rarely considered the application scenarios of ATM (Air Traffic Management) in commercial air transport, and there are the problems of low anomaly detection rate and the non-lightweight model. This paper focuses on ADS-B anomaly detection under the background of ATM. We propose the TTSAD (TCN-Transformer-SVDD Model for Anomaly Detection) model, which aims to address the problems of existing ADS-B anomaly detection methods including inadequate considerations of long-term dependencies and distribution characteristic, the non-lightweight model and the poor adaptive threshold. First, ADS-B time series is input into TCN (Temporal Convolutional Network) prediction module which predicts data in an accurate and quick way using causal convolution and dilated convolution. Then, the predicted ADS-B time series is input into Transformer reconstruction module which reconstructs data accurately and quickly based on Self-Attention and Multi-Head Attention mechanism. Finally, the difference values between the reconstructed values and the real values are input into SVDD (Support Vector Data Description) threshold determination module for an optimal threshold. Experimental results show that the TTSAD model can detect ADS-B anomaly data generated from attacks such as altitude slow offset and DOS (Denial of Service). The TTSAD model is superior to other machine learning methods in terms of recall rate, detection rate, accuracy rate, missing detection rate and false alarm rate. Furthermore, compared with other deep learning methods including LSTM, GRU and LSTM-AE, the TTSAD model has a shorter training time and a lightweight characteristic. This approach guarantees the information security of ADS-B, thereby improving the operational security of ATM.

Secure Aviation Control through a Streamlined ADS-B Perception System

Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) is the future of aviation surveillance and traffic control, allowing different aircraft types to exchange information periodically. Despite this protocol’s advantages, it is vulnerable to flooding, denial of service, and injection attacks. In this paper, we decided to join the initiative of securing this protocol and propose an efficient detection method to help detect any exploitation attempts by injecting these messages with the wrong information. This paper focused mainly on three attacks: path modification, ghost aircraft injection, and velocity drift attacks. This paper aims to provide a revolutionary methodology that, even in the face of new attacks (zero-day attacks), can successfully detect injected messages. The main advantage was utilizing a recent dataset to create more reliable and adaptive training and testing materials, which were then preprocessed before using different machine learning algorithms to feasibly create the most accurate and time-efficient model. The best outcomes of the binary classification were obtained with 99.14% accuracy, an F1-score of 99.14%, and a Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.982. At the same time, the best outcomes of the multiclass classification were obtained with 99.41% accuracy, an F1-score of 99.37%, and a Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.988. Eventually, our best outcomes outdo existing models, but we believe the model would benefit from more testing of other types of attacks and a bigger dataset.

Assessing the Effectiveness of ADS-B Mitigations

The rise in aerial traffic necessitates aircraft localisation methods that go beyond radar technology's built-in capabilities. The Automated Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system is a novel aircraft localisation method that promises to provide the necessary precision to handle the current air traffic surge. The Federal Aviation Administration has, therefore, enforced ADS-B's deployment. However, the architecture of the ADS-B system holds several vulnerabilities. Most of these vulnerabilities are because ADS-B is designed to rely on wireless networks. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the ADS-B threat landscape and potential mitigations to better understand their distinct characteristics and impact on the ADS-B system. Addressing these security concerns is imperative to ensure ADS-B systems' robustness and trustworthiness and safeguard the aviation industry from potential cyber threats. The paper concludes with a critical review of how well the proposed mitigations address the identified security threats.

A Dual-Hierarchy Synchronization Method for Signal Preambles with High Detection Rates for Satellite-Based ADS-B Receivers with Different Sensitivities

Existing methods are unable to achieve high detection rates and low false alarm rates of satellite-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) signal preambles at extremely low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) using limited on-star resources. In this paper, a dual-hierarchy synchronization method is proposed, including a first-level coarse synchronization and a second-level fine synchronization. The coarse synchronization process involves three steps: (1) detection of unknown signals, (2) soft decision, and (3) adaptive interval output. The first step introduces the threshold (TMSED) of the minimum signal energy to be detected to guarantee a high detection rate. In the soft decision step, a value (SV) designed to improve the robustness of the system curbs false detection caused by noise interference. In the last step, the coarse synchronization interval radius (r) is mapped out according to the SNR to reduce resource consumption. The fine synchronization process is based on the coarse synchronization output, and the correlation peak is calculated to complete the synchronization of the signal preambles. The results show that the proposed method achieves a high detection rate of 96% at an extremely low SNR using a low sampling frequency of 10 MHz. Furthermore, the adjustment of TMSED allows this method to be applied to ADS-B receivers with different sensitivities. The comprehensive performance of this method to achieve high detection rates and acceptable false alarm rates at extremely low SNRs with limited on-star resources is verified by final simulations to be superior to other methods.

A Radio Frequency Fingerprinting-Based Aircraft Identification Method Using ADS-B Transmissions

The automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) system is one of the key components of the next generation air transportation system (NextGen). ADS-B messages are transmitted in unencrypted plain text. This, however, causes significant security vulnerabilities, leaving the system open to various types of wireless attacks. In particular, the attacks can be intensified by simple hardware, like a software-defined radio (SDR). In order to provide high security against such attacks, radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) approaches offer reasonable solutions. In this study, an RFF method is proposed for aircraft identification based on ADS-B transmissions. Initially, 3480 ADS-B samples were collected by an SDR from eight aircrafts. The power spectral density (PSD) features were then extracted from the filtered and normalized samples. Furthermore, the support vector machine (SVM) with three kernels (linear, polynomial, and radial basis function) was used to identify the aircraft. Moreover, the classification accuracy was demonstrated via varying channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels (10–30 dB). With a minimum accuracy of 92% achieved at lower SNR levels (10 dB), the proposed method based on SVM with a polynomial kernel offers an acceptable performance. The promising performance achieved with even a small dataset also suggests that the proposed method is implementable in real-world applications.

Collision Avoidance Capabilities in High-Density Airspace Using the Universal Access Transceiver ADS-B Messages

The safe integration of a large number of unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) into the National Airspace System (NAS) is essential for advanced air mobility. This requires reliable air-to-air transmission systems and robust collision avoidance algorithms. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a potential solution for a dependable air-to-air messaging system, but its reliability when stressed with hundreds to thousands of vehicles operating simultaneously is in question. This paper presents an ADS-B model and analyzes the capabilities of the Universal Access Transceiver (UAT), which operates at a frequency of 978 MHz. We use a probabilistic collision avoidance algorithm to examine the impact of varying parameters, including the number of vehicles and the transmission power of the UAT, on the overall safety of the vehicles. Additionally, we investigate the root causes of co-channel interference, proposing enhancements for safe operations in environments with a high density of UAS. Simulation results show message success and collision rates. With our proposed enhancements, UAT ADS-B can provide a decentralized air traffic system that operates safely in high-density situations.

An Experimental and Analytical Approach to Evaluate Transponder-Based Aircraft Noise Monitoring Technology

Aviation is a vital modern transportation sector connecting millions of passengers globally. Sustainable aviation development holds substantial community benefits, necessitating effective management of its environmental impacts. This paper addresses the need for an accurate and cost-effective aircraft noise monitoring model tailored to non-towered general aviation airports with limited resources for official air traffic data collection. The existing literature highlights a heavy reliance on air traffic data from control facilities in prevailing aircraft noise modeling solutions, revealing a disparity between real-world constraints and optimal practices. Our study presents a validation of a three-stage framework centered on a low-cost transponder unit, employing an innovative experimental and analytical approach to assess the model’s accuracy. An economical Automatic Dependent Surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) receiver is deployed at Purdue University Airport (ICAO Code: KLAF) to estimate aircraft noise levels using the developed approach. Simultaneously, a physical sound meter is positioned at KLAF to capture actual acoustic noise levels, facilitating a direct comparison with the modeled data. Results demonstrate that the developed noise model accurately identifies aircraft noise events with an average error of 4.50 dBA. This suggests the viability of our low-cost noise monitoring approach as an affordable solution for non-towered general aviation airports. In addition, this paper discusses the limitations and recommendations for future research.

Development of a machine learning model for predicting abnormalities of commercial airplanes

Airplanes are a social necessity for movement of humans, goods, and other. They are generally safe modes of transportation; however, incidents and accidents occassionally occur. To prevent aviation accidents, it is necessary to develop a machine-learning model to detect and predict commercial flights using automatic dependent surveillance–broadcast data. This study combined data-quality detection, anomaly detection, and abnormality-classification-model development. The research methodology involved the following stages: problem statement, data selection and labeling, prediction-model development, deployment, and testing. The data labeling process was based on the rules framed by the international civil aviation organization for commercial, jet-engine flights and validated by expert commercial pilots. The results showed that the best prediction model, the quadratic-discriminant-analysis, was 93% accurate, indicating a “good fit.” Moreover, the model's area-under-the-curve results for abnormal and normal detection were 0.97 and 0.96, respectively, thus confirming its “good fit.”

Advanced collision risk estimation in terminal manoeuvring areas using a disentangled variational autoencoder for uncertainty quantification

Air Traffic Management aims at ensuring safety during aircraft operations, particularly within Terminal Manoeuvring Areas where traffic density is high. The challenge lies in balancing safety and efficiency by closely managing the likelihood of mid-air collisions regarding the airport movements. Traditional models like the Reich and Anderson-Hsu models have been influential, but they fall short in representing the complex reality of Terminal Manoeuvring Areas. Data-driven approaches are emerging, with Monte Carlo simulations offering a more flexible methodology for collision risk estimation. This paper introduces a framework for assessing Mid-Air Collision likelihood resulting from Terminal Manoeuvring Area procedures by combining the field of Deep Generative Modelling using a Variational Autoencoder with the domain of rare event statistics through Subset Simulation. By incorporating disentanglement into the Variational Autoencoders model, we create a latent space that aligns dimensions with distinctive trajectory traits. Then, Subset Simulation is employed to gauge Mid-Air Collision probability, utilizing latent representations as input. Finally, sensitivity analysis reveals pivotal factors influencing collision risk, correlated with trajectory attributes via disentanglement. The methodology is applied to traffic around Zurich Airport: it evaluates the risk arising from go-around and take-off procedures using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Deceptive Jamming Detection Method Based on Track Data

The characteristics of automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) technology, such as unencrypted channels and open data protocols, make it extremely vulnerable to various intentional or unintentional spoofing and jamming, which seriously threatens air traffic safety. Traditional approaches do not update their high-bit data for a long time, which causes the situations of the same encoding results to have different aircraft positions and it is difficult to determine the real position of the aircraft and effectively detect ADS-B jamming. Therefore, it is urgent to propose more effective detection methods for ADS-B spoofing and jamming. First, the methods and principles of frequency shift calculation and automatic monitoring algorithm are introduced. Then, signal consistency detection and error robustness are analyzed, and a track-data-based detection model for abnormal ADS-B data are proposed. The track-data-based detection methods can use multi-point sampling judgment algorithm to realize the reception and processing of data bits. This method makes full use of the information of multiple sampling values of each data bit and the reference power value obtained in the preamble detection, and determines the data value and confidence value through the relationship between the two. The detection methods for ADS-B spoofing and jamming distinguishes the true and false signals and the authenticity of target positions by comparing the arrival time difference of each signal at the ground station. Finally, the research results show that, with the increase of signal to noise ratio, no matter the estimation based on virtual array translation or the estimation based on circular stationary signal, their estimation accuracies are improved with gradually increasing trends.

Fuel Burn Method Assessment Using Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast and European Reanalysis Data: Limited Flight Sample Analysis

Fuel burn during the actual route flown is an important indicator of aircraft operational efficiency. This study aims to assess and systematically evaluate the method for fuel consumed during flights using data from the automatic dependent surveillance–broadcast (ADS-B), European reanalysis (ERA5) meteorological dataset, and BADA 3 performance. A literature background and comprehensive methodology are provided for fuel estimation using track data. The airborne part of the trajectory was used to estimate the total trip fuel consumed during several flights of a commercial airliner. The calculated fuel burn is compared with measured fuel consumption from the flight data recorder (FDR). The results show that fuel consumption for the entire airborne part of the trajectory can be estimated with an average error of 1.2% and with a standard deviation of 1.3%. Detailed results of fuel burn for individual flight phases, from the initial climb to the approach, are also presented. In addition, this paper also discusses the sources of errors and the potential applications of the method for network operations and environmental monitoring.

Hidden Markov Models and Flight Phase Identification

The use of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) in segmenting flight phases is a compelling approach with significant implications for aviation and aerospace research. It leverages the temporal sequences of flight data to delineate various phases of an aircraft’s journey, making it a valuable tool for enhancing the anal- ysis of flight performance and safety. In this work, we implement a multivariate HMM to identify 6 flight phases: taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, approach and rollout. We reach a median global accuracy of about 97% over a sample of several thousand flights with a very low number of decoded unlikely transitions. Regarding several performance metrics, our method is competitive with existing methods in the litera- ture, such as fuzzy logic. Additionally, it provides, for each point of the flight, a probability of belonging to each phase. Even in situations where there are missing values in the data, HMMs remain effective, ensuring that no critical information is lost during the segmentation process. We show that HMMs work seamlessly with the fine granularity of Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data. HMMs offer remarkable flex- ibility and adaptability, proving particularly effective when the number or order of phases is unknown or not predetermined, as is often the case with complex flight scenarios such as helicopter flights. This adaptability is crucial for handling the diverse range of flight operations that differ from one aircraft to another. An example is given with the segmentation of an Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) helicopter flight operated by the Swedish National Police.

The high-resolution Global Aviation emissions Inventory based on ADS-B (GAIA) for 2019–2021

Abstract. Aviation emissions that are dispersed into the Earth's atmosphere affect the climate and air pollution, with significant spatiotemporal variation owing to heterogeneous aircraft activity. In this paper, we use historical flight trajectories derived from Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) telemetry and reanalysis weather data for 2019–2021 to develop the Global Aviation emissions Inventory based on ADS-B (GAIA). In 2019, 40.2 million flights collectively travelled 61 billion kilometres using 283 Tg of fuel, leading to CO2, NOX and non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) mass and number emissions of 893 Tg, 4.49 Tg, 21.4 Gg and 2.8 × 1026 respectively. Global responses to COVID-19 led to reductions in the annual flight distance flown and CO2 and NOX emissions in 2020 (−43 %, −48 % and −50 % respectively relative to 2019) and 2021 (−31 %, −41 % and −43 % respectively), with significant regional variability. Short-haul flights with durations < 3 h accounted for 83 % of all flights but only for 35 % of the 2019 CO2 emissions, while long-haul flights with durations > 6 h (5 % of all flights) were responsible for 43 % of CO2 and 49 % of NOX emissions. Globally, the actual flight trajectories flown are, on average, ∼ 5 % greater than the great circle path between the origin and destination airports, but this varies by region and flight distance. An evaluation of 8705 unique flights between London and Singapore showed large variabilities in the flight trajectory profile, fuel consumption and emission indices. GAIA captures the spatiotemporal distribution of aviation activity and emissions and is provided for use in future studies to evaluate the negative externalities arising from global aviation.

PENGEMBANGAN FLIGHT MONITORING SYSTEM MODE-S BERBASIS OFFLINE MEWUJUDKAN KEMANDIRIAN TEKNOLOGI PENERBANGAN

Technological independence is important for every country in global competition. One of the technological advancements developed by the Indonesian government through BPPT is Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) type in, which functions as a flight monitoring system. The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) through Depohar 50 (Depot Maintenance 50) has also developed ADS-B type in, which is currently deployed in six radar units known as the Flight Monitoring System (FMS) Mode-S. Accordance with government regulations (Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 81 of 2017), the government has mandated the use of ADS-B for flight safety. ADS-B has two types, in and out. In the TNI AU, ADS-B out is installed on aircraft such as Grob, KT-1, and Cessna, while ADS-B in is installed on Weibel radar. However, since ADS-B is not yet installed on TNI AU aircraft, flight data from the Air Traffic Control (ATC) was communicated to the pilots, hence, they can be aware of the air traffic situation. Furthermore, due to the increasing air traffic, communication with ATC has become limited. A qualitative method was used in the development of the ADS-B type in TNI AU aircraft, and the previous ADS-B type in development could only be installed on the ground station. The information received from ADS-B on the aircraft was real-time air traffic, which helps pilots make decisions to enhance flight safety, such as reducing the risk of aircraft collisions. The use of this technology on TNI AU aircraft is important for improving flight safety and technological independence.

FLIGHT DELAY PREDICTION BASED ON AVIATION BIG DATA AND MACHINE LEARNING

Accurate flight delay prediction is fundamental to establish the more efficient airline business. Recent studies have been focused on applying machine learning methods to predict the flight delay. Most of the previous prediction methods are conducted in a single route or airport. This paper explores a broader scope of factors which may potentially influence the flight delay, and compares several machine learning-based models in designed generalized flight delay prediction tasks. To build a dataset for the proposed scheme, automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) messages are received, pre-processed, and integrated with other information such as weather condition, flight schedule, and airport information. The designed prediction tasks contain different classification tasks and a regression task. Experimental results show that long short-term memory (LSTM) is capable of handling the obtained aviation sequence data, but over fitting problem occurs in our limited dataset. Compared with the previous schemes, the proposed random forest-based model can obtain higher prediction accuracy (90.2% for the binary classification) and can overcome the over fitting problem. Filtering of Complex Signals Based on a Two-Level Fuzzy-Logic Model

Purpose of research. Development of a method and algorithm of complex analog radio signals filtering and binarization, such as the signal of Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), which allows to increase the sensitivity of the receiver of the AZN-B signal and increase the number of correctly detected received messages.Methods. To solve this problem, the basics of the theory of signal filtering and the theory of fuzzy sets were applied in the work. The proposed method is based on combining signal filtering by known filters and a two-level fuzzy model. The first and second levels of the fuzzy model contain three operations: automatic formation of membership functions, compositional output and defuzzification. Input variables of both levels are given by trapezoidal membership functions. At the first level, they are formed automatically depending on the characteristics of the complex signal. The output function at the first level is given by a singleton function, and defuzzification is carried out using a simplified center of gravity model.Results. The proposed algorithm was implemented in the developed device based on a programmable logic integrated circuit (FPGA). In addition to filtering, the developed device implements all signal processing functions, such as: receiving input data, decoding, checking the correctness of decoded data, storing them, transmitting ADS-B messages for further processing. A distinctive feature of the device is its small size and low power consumption, which allows use it in small spacecraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.Conclusion. A method of filtering complex signals based on a fuzzy logic model is considered, which can be used to filter complex signals, such as ADS-B messages in small spacecraft modules. The proposed implementation of the filtering method makes it possible to increase the sensitivity of the AZN-B signal receiver by 20% and correctly decode the received signal. The method was implemented by an FPGA-based device, which made it possible to reduce the size and power consumption compared to analogues.

Independently convolutional gated recurrent neural unit for space-based ADS-B signal separation with single antenna

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a critical technology to transform aircraft navigation by improving safety and overall effectiveness in the aviation industry. However, overlapping of ADS-B signals is a large challenge, especially for space-based ADS-B systems. Existing traditional methods are not effective when dealing with cases that overlapped signals with small difference (such as power difference and carrier frequency difference) require to be separated. In order to generate an effective separation performance of the ADS-B signals by exploring its temporal relationship, Independently Convolutional Gated Recurrent Neural Unit (Ind-CGRU) is presented for encoder–decoder network construction. Experimental results on the dataset SR-ADSB demonstrate that the proposed Ind-CGRU achieves good performance.
