EMPOWERMENT IN NURSING BY SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW AND BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS METHODS

AAim: In this study, it is aimed to present an overall summary of the research published related to the concept of empowerment in nursing by using a systematic literature review and bibliometric indicators. Method: Systematic review and bibliometric analysis methods were used to determine the empowerment tendencies in nursing and to reveal the clustering of the data. A total of 450 articles on empowerment in nursing, research methods and fields, article number by years and the most cited articles were complied by using systematic review, and they were analyzed by VOS viewer software in terms of the key word network, journal co-citation network and author co-citation network factors. Results: It has been determined that empowerment research in nursing has gained momentum over time. When the impact of COVID-19 pandemic which has created on the Earth and the negative results that have been experienced by healthcare staff during this process are taken into consideration, it is also predicted that more research will be conducted on the concept. In addition, it has been determined in our study by network analysis that the concept of empowerment has a strong relation with the concepts of job satisfaction, nursing, psychological and constructional empowerment, burnout, leadership, long-term care and work environment. Conclusions and Suggestions: In this study, it has been revealed that the concepts of nursing and empowerment have been used together intensively, and the publications issued on empowerment in nursing have been increasing by years. This shows that the concept of empowerment has a strategic importance for nurses. Awareness should be raised about the adoption of empowerment activities, which will make nurses, who have a direct impact on the quality of care in health services management, feel powerful, support their positive participation in organizational processes, and be a source of motivation, by all management levels.

A Bibliometric and Visualisation Analysis on the Research of Female Genital Plastic Surgery Based on the Web of Science Core Collection Database.

Due to the increasing demand for improving the morphology and function of the external genitalia amongst women, it is necessary to conduct statistical analysis of research data on female genital reconstruction. The current study aimed to use bibliometric analysis to analyse the research hotspots and trend frontiers of the female genital reconstructive research. Publications on the female genital reconstructive research were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewer 1.6.18 was used to establish visualisation maps and find top authors, institutions, countries, burst keywords, co-cited authors, journals, research hotspots, and trends. A total of 2207 studies published by 364 different journals authored by 7479 researchers were contained in this study. In the co-authorship analysis, the bulk of the retrieved studies was conducted by the USA, followed by England, Italy, and Netherlands, whilst the most productive institution, journal, and author were U.S. Univ Calif San Francisco, Journal of Sexual Medicine, and Bouman Mark-Bram, respectively. In the co-cited analysis, the top most-cited author and journal were Hage JJ and Journal of Sexual Medicine, respectively. The map of keywords occurrence revealed the most active research aspects were focussed on "vaginoplasty", "feminised genitoplasty", "laser treatment of vaginal atrophy", "transsexualism", and "labiaplasty". The time overlay mapping showed that the study of female genital plastic surgery focusses on the energetic treatment of genitourinary syndromes caused by transsexualism and menopause, especially by using management and treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy for the research trends, and through the vaginoplasty, feminising genioplasty, and laser treatments in the direction of treatments related to physical and mental problems. This novel inclusive bibliometric analysis can help research workers to quickly understand the potential and active researchers, landmark studies, and topics within their interests. We are willing to provide more beneficial data to contribute valuable research of female genital plastic surgery through this study. Research and analysis on the status quo of traditional villages in Guangxi Province based on Cite-space

There are many well-preserved traditional ancient buildings in Guangxi Province, and the visualization of the academic achievements in this field can help to form a clear understanding of the current research status and development trend, so as to provide reference value for the subsequent research work. In this paper, we use Cite-space visualization software to systematically sort out 317 CNKI journals with the theme of "traditional villages in Guangxi" from the perspectives of literature characteristics and literature content, and find that: the number of published journals on the whole shows a rising trend, but is still relatively small; the academic atmosphere of mutual cooperation among journal authors is still good; the academic atmosphere of included journals is still good; the number of published journals is still small; and the number of published journals is still very small, and the academic atmosphere is still very small. The academic atmosphere among journal authors is still good; the included journals are mainly regional and ethnic, highlighting the specialization of regional nature research; the research hotspots are focused on traditional villages, rural revitalization, tourism development, urbanization and other fields, and future research should be combined with rural revitalization and rural tourism, and more consideration should be given to the development mode of rural revitalization by virtue of the characteristics of the traditional villages and the use of the tourism industry to promote rural revitalization, which is not only in line with the strategic planning of the country but also can better protect and inherit the traditional villages, but also can better protect and inherit the traditional villages. Clinical Application of Botulinum Toxin A on Nasal Reconstruction with Expanded Forehead Flap for Asian Patients.

Because of its unique advantages, frontal expansion has become a common tool for Asian nasal reconstruction, but it has the limitations of prolonging the duration and pain in the expansion area. Based on the fact that the denervation effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has been widely used in the reconstruction of superficial organs, we hypothesized that BTX-A would shorten the length of nasal reconstruction sequence and alleviate the discomfort of patients. A comparative retrospective study was conducted of consecutive patients underwent sequential treatment of nasal reconstruction between June 2010 and July 2012. Data on demographics, BTX-A injection plan and expansion duration were collected and analyzed. Phased pain intensity outcomes were evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS). Photographs were collected during the follow-up period. Thirty patients were enrolled in the study; 15 (50%) with and 15 (50%) without BTX-A pre-injection. Demographic data were homogeneous. The duration of the observation group (BTX-A pretreated) (133.87 ± 13.64 days) was significantly shortened versus the control group (164.27 ± 14.08 days, P<0.001). At the initial stage, no significant difference was found in the VAS scores (P=0.64). At the medium stage, the VAS score of the observation group (2.07 ± 0.80) was significantly lower than the control group (3.00 ± 0.53, P<0.01). At the terminal stage, the VAS score of the observation group (1.93 ± 0.59) was significantly lower than the control group (2.73 ± 0.70) but with a narrower disparity. Pre-injection of BTX-A is effective in shortening the duration of the expansion phase, as well as relieving the pain associated with expansion. Promising Novelty in Articles: How Authors Publishing in Sinta and Scopus-Indexed Journals Differ or Resemble

Many academics have studied niche establishment tactics in journal articles, but none have studied two or more sets of journal articles in language studies. This study identifies how Scopus and Sinta English Language Teaching journal authors niche their research paper abstracts and introductions. Niche Establishment techniques in Sinta and Scopus-indexed journals were examined using qualitative and quantitative methods. This analysis used 100 Scopus- and Sinta-indexed research articles. From randomly selected journals' newest issues, research article parts were extracted. Most authors in the two sets of research publications define a niche in the introduction, but few do in the abstracts. Scopus-index journals use Strategy 2 (insufficient research) and Strategy 5 (suggesting solutions) the most, while Sinta-indexed journals use Strategy 2 and Strategy 1. For rookie authors and postgraduate students, this study proposes niche establishment tactics in research paper abstracts or introductions to improve writing.

A scientometrics-based journal Management framework: A strategic move

Managing a scientific journal is a critical and challenging service for academics and practitioners. There must be a way for journal editors to gain a clear picture of their publication's performance and gain insight into how they can make improvements to expand the journal's impact. Knowing the journal's performance and its leading contribution to a particular field can be useful for journal managers readers, authors, and science policymakers. This article presents a management framework informed by scientometrics and bibliometrics as a science that uses statistical techniques to analyze information distribution models, to help journals contribute more to the field by optimum engagement of editorial knowledge and expertise and expanding the boundaries of what is known. We examined one prominent journal as a case study in this paper. The outcomes are used to assess the feasibility of the proposed framework. The top contributions of the case journal are identified systematically, and strategies for potential growth are proposed accordingly. Based on the findings, this study not only provides an overview of the benefits of scientometrics-based journal management but also provides recommendations to strengthen the journal's impact on the field as a contribution to practice. As a result, this article is intended to benefit publishers, journal editors, readers, and policymakers.

Guidance for systematic reviews in journal author instructions: Findings and recommendations for editorial teams

AbstractIntroductionSystematic reviews play a crucial role in informing clinical decision‐making, policy formulation, and evidence‐based practice. However, despite the existence of well‐established guidelines, inadequately executed and reported systematic reviews continue to be published. These highly cited reviews not only pose a threat to the credibility of science but also have substantial implications for medical decision‐making. This study aims to evaluate and recommend improvements to the author instructions of biomedical and health journals concerning the conducting and reporting of systematic reviews.MethodsA sample of 168 journals was selected based on systematic reviews published between 2020 and 2021, taking into account their Altmetric attention score, citation impact, and mentions in Altmetric Explorer. Author instructions were downloaded, and data extraction was carried out using a standardized web form. Two reviewers independently extracted data, and discrepancies were resolved by a third reviewer. The findings were presented using descriptive statistics, and recommendations for editorial teams were formulated. The protocol is registered with the Open Science Framework Registries (osf. io/bym8d).ResultsOne‐third of the journals lack tailored guidance for systematic reviews, as demonstrated by the absence of references to conducting or reporting guidelines, protocol registration, data sharing, and the involvement of an information specialist. Half of the author instructions do not include a dedicated section on systematic reviews, hampering the findability of tailored information. The involvement of information specialists is seldom acknowledged. Ultimately, the absence of an update date in most author instructions raises concerns about the incorporation of the most recent developments and tools for systematic reviews.ConclusionJournals that make substantial contributions to synthesizing evidence in biomedicine and health are missing an opportunity to provide clear guidance within their author instructions regarding the conducting and reporting of reliable systematic reviews. This not only fails to inform future authors but also potentially compromises the quality of this frequently published research type. Furthermore, there is a need for greater recognition of the added value of information specialists to the systematic review and publishing processes. This article provides recommendations drawn from the study's observations, aiming to help editorial teams enhance author instructions and, consequently, potentially assisting systematic reviewers in improving the quality of their reviews.

Advanced Research in the Field of Jurisprudence: Age of the Subject of Cognitive Activity

Introduction. The coordinated work of the workforce as a social group in which knowledge and skills are passed on between generations directly depends on the harmonious combination of the ages of its participants. Taking into account the seriousness of the efforts made by the Russian state to preserve the personnel potential of scientific and educational organizations and create a system of incentives for young researchers, an analysis of the average age of authors who published their works on jurisprudence in journals at the top of the SCIENCE INDEX 2022 ranking is carried out. The purpose of the work is to establish patterns characterizing the age composition of authors of leading legal journals and the factors influencing this composition. The objectives of the study are: establishing the average age of authors of leading legal journals, comparing it with the ages of authors of journals in other sciences, identifying factors influencing the age of authors that can be taken into account when developing a set of measures aimed at maintaining Russian science. Methods. The work uses statistical methods, comparative method, formal logical methods. Results. The collected data on the average age of authors of journals in the social and humanities, as well as natural and technical sciences, is presented. The age of authors of works in natural and technical disciplines is, as a rule, higher than the average age of authors in social sciences and humanities. The average age of authors of legal sciences is one of the lowest among the social sciences and humanities, which can be explained by the high dynamism of modern legislation and the specificity of the subject (national law), which reduces the mobility of a scientist. Discussion and Conclusion. The age of the scientist, the merits associated with him and his position in the social hierarchy influence the ability to publish research results in the most prestigious legal journals, however, this pattern ceases to be observed when comparing the average age of authors in the middle and end of the ranking of legal journals.

Ethically Determining the Authorship of Health Science Research Publications: A Scoping Review

Authorship is a significant aspect of scientific research publications, serving as a primary means of acknowledging the intellectual contributions of individuals and shaping career trajectories. However, determining authorship ethically and fairly in health science research remains a complex and multifaceted issue. This scoping review aims to explore the existing literature surrounding ethical considerations associated with authorship determination in health science research publications, published between 1989 and 2023. A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that ethical authorship practices in health science research are complex and multifaceted. This review emphasized how crucial it is to have precise rules and guidelines for deciding who is the author in academic journals, research institutes, and societies. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has published several ethical principles to address the difficulties associated with authorship determination. Still, there are differences and disagreements in how these rules are interpreted and applied, which could present moral enigmas. The review also examines new ethical issues arising from multidisciplinary and collaborative research, such as the responsibilities and funding of industry collaborations, shared authorship, and acknowledging the contributions of other groups. Maintaining the integrity of health science research and encouraging responsible collaboration requires making sure that authorship determination is transparent, equitable, and accountable. Authors should disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence their judgment or interpretation of the research findings.

Exploring the Landscape of Hydrogel Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury: A Bibliometric and Visual Analysis (1991–2023)

BackgroundThis study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on hydrogel therapy for spinal cord injury to visualize the research status, identify hotspots, and explore the development trends in this field. MethodsWeb of science Core Collection database was searched for relevant studies published between January 1991 and December 2023. Data such as journal title, author information, institutional affiliation, country, citation and keywords were extracted. Bibliometrix, CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to perform bibliometric analysis of the retrieved data. ResultsA total of 1099 articles pertaining to hydrogel therapy for spinal cord injury were retrieved, revealing an upward trajectory in both annual publication volume and cumulative publication volume. Biomaterials emerged as the journal with the highest number of publications and the most rapid cumulative publication growth, contributing 84 articles. Among authors, Shoichet MS stood out with the highest number of publications and citations, totaling 66 articles. The University of Toronto led in institutional contributions with 65 publications, while China dominated in country-specific publications, accounting for 374 articles.However, to foster significant academic achievements, it is imperative for diverse authors, institutions, and countries to enhance collaboration. Current research in this field concentrates on scaffold architecture, nerve growth factor, the fibrotic microenvironment, and guidance channels. Simultaneously, upcoming research directions prioritize 3D bioprinting, injectable hydrogel, inflammation, and nanoparticles within the realm of hydrogel therapy for spinal cord injuries. ConclusionIn summary, this study provided a comprehensive analysis of the current research status and frontiers of hydrogel therapy for spinal cord injury. The findings provide a foundation for future research and clinical translation efforts of hydrogel therapy in this field.

Accuracy of Financial Disclosures in Radiology Journals

PurposeThe accuracy and completeness of self-disclosures of the value of industry payments by authors publishing in radiology journals are not well known. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of financial disclosures by US authors in five prominent radiology journals. MethodsFinancial disclosures provided by US-based authors in five prominent radiology journals from original research and review articles published in 2021 were reviewed. For each author, payment reports were extracted from the Open Payments Database (OPD) in the previous 36 months related to general, research, and ownership payments. Each author was analyzed individually to determine if the reported disclosures matched results from the OPD. ResultsA total of 4,076 authorships, including 3,406 unique authors, were selected from 643 articles across the five journals; 1,388 (1,032 unique authors) received industry payments within the previous 36 months, with a median total amount received per authorship of $6,650 (interquartile range, $355-$87,725). Sixty-one authors (4.4%) disclosed all industry relationships, 205 (14.8%) disclosed some of the OPD-reported relationships, and 1,122 (80.8%) failed to disclose any relationships. Undisclosed payments totaled $186,578,350, representing 67.2% of all payments. Radiology had the highest proportion of authorships disclosing some or all OPD-reported relationships (32.3%), compared with the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (18.2%), the American Journal of Neuroradiology (17.3%), JACR (13.1%), and the American Journal of Roentgenology (10.3%). ConclusionsFinancial relationships with industry are common among US physician authors in prominent radiology journals, and nondisclosure rates are high.

From Marginalia to Bookends: Industrialization, Capitalism, and Advertising in Hungary’s Modern Literary Journal, &lt;i&gt;Nyugat&lt;/i&gt; (1908–41)

This paper examines Nyugat [West], the premier journal of modern Hungarian literature published from 1908 to 1941 and edited by Ernő Osvát (1876–1929), Ignotus (1869–1949), and Miksa Fenyő (1877–1972) until 1917. Although Hungarian scholarship has detailed the role played by Osvát and Ignotus, Fenyő’s contribution to this triumvirate has received less attention, a lack that may have hindered literary historians’ understanding of the more widespread, sociological reasons underlying Nyugat’s long-lasting presence in a highly competitive book market. I argue that examining Fenyő’s editorial position demands the inclusion of marginalia, the term this study utilizes to denote the factory advertisements, banking-related notifications, military supply announcements, railway schedules, and eulogies that display Fenyő’s ties to the industrial lobby organization GyOSz — the National Association of Hungarian Industrialists, also referred to as ‘the Association’ — within the pages of a journal dedicated to promoting fin-de-siècle aestheticism. Exploring what Bernard Lahire would describe as Fenyő’s ‘double life’ thereby paves the way to theorizing what beliefs and ‘rules of the game’ (illusio) may have determined the connection between Hungary’s wealthiest industrialists and Nyugat during a period when the journal’s editors and authors sought to attain both authorial and financial autonomy.

A116 PREVALENCE OF EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBERSHIP AMONG ORIGINAL RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN HIGH IMPACT GASTROENTEROLOGY-FOCUSED JOURNALS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS

Abstract Background Editorial board members, as experts in their field, often publish relevant research in journals on which they serve. This combined role of “editor-as-author” may be a source for conflict of interest in the peer review process. In Gastroenterology-focused journals, the prevalence of instances for editor-as-author has not been explored. Aims To estimate the prevalence of editor-as-author among high impact factor (IF) Gastroenterology-focused journals. Methods We used a cross-sectional study design. We used InCites Journal reports to identify 30 Gastroenterology journals with the highest IF in 2020, wherein we included journals that had publicly accessible board membership that indicated the following: institution/city/country; and at least the first name initial and entire last name for editorial board members. We created a list of all editorial board members, excluding any emeritus editors and society representatives. Among these journals, we identified all original research articles using the Web of Science, wherein we excluded any editorial material, meeting abstracts, and clinical practice guidelines. Among these original publications, two authors then independently and in duplicate determined any instances of authors who had editorial board membership. The primary outcome measure was the prevalence of editors-as-authors. Secondary outcomes involved the number of editorial board members with first authorships and senior/corresponding authorships, as well as the number of articles that disclosed editorial board membership. Results Among the 30 Gastroenterology-focused journals that had the highest IF, 24 met the relevant inclusion criteria. These journals had a total of 6162 original publications, of which 992 (16.1%) had at least one instance of editor-as-author; 8 (0.1%) articles disclosed that there was editorial board membership among its authors. Among all 24 included journals, there were a total 2106 editorial board members. Of these members, 635 (30.2%) had at least one instance of editor-as-author, wherein 134 and 263 members were first authors and senior/corresponding authors, respectively. Conclusions Our study found that approximately one third of editorial board members among high IF Gastroenterology-focused journals were also authors in these same journals. Future analysis will focus on determining whether there is the difference in quality of published work compared to those without editorial board membership. Funding Agencies None

Gender authorship in major American and European gastroenterology journals: the gap is still unfilled.

The gender gap in the authorship of scientific research may affect career advancement. Our aim was to assess the potential gender gap in gastrointestinal (GI) journals. A systematic review was performed of the GI literature and ongoing research in the period 2020-2022. A total 10 GI journals and ongoing research on clinicaltrials.gov were selected for review. The gender gap in first and senior authorship was evaluated for each article and ongoing research project. Associations between the gender gap and possible predictors were measured and results are presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95%CI. The number of first female authors (FFAs) and senior female authors (SFAs) in published articles were 1408/4207 (33.5%) and 911/4207 (21.7%), respectively. There were 781/2654 (29.4%) female principal investigators (PI)s for the ongoing research. On comparison of non-endoscopic vs. endoscopic topics, the latter were associated with the gender gap (hepatology, OR 2.15 [95%CI 1.83-2.55]; inflammatory bowel disease, OR 2.12 [95%CI 1.60-2.45]; upper and lower GI, OR 1.31 [95%CI 1.18-1.73]); as well as the type of article (original article vs. editorial, OR 1.92 [95%CI 1.58-2.33]). The type of research was also associated with the gender gap (clinical vs. preclinical studies, OR 0.88 [95%CI 0.66-0.91]). Our results demonstrated a correlation between the gender gap and the design and topic of the research. Future strategies for improving equity in career development in GI endoscopy should focus on closing the gender gap in equity of authorship.

Trends in PubMed-Indexed Research in Matched Urology Applicants: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the 2017 to 2021 Match Cycles

Purpose: Urology is one of the most competitive specialties for residency matches in the United States. Data reported by the American Urological Association from match cycles spanning 2014 to 2021 reveal a median of 0.34% (0%-3%) of unfilled spots, a median of 1.48 (1.28-1.87) applicants per position, and a median of 75% (63%-87%) match rate. Recent research has shown that program directors value applicants' research highly. We sought to assess the research productivity of matched urology residency applicants, identify trends in research volume over time, and investigate the potential correlation between research output and program ranking. Materials and Methods: Doximity Urology program ranking list from the 2017 to 2021 match cycles was sorted by reputation, extracted, and populated using each program's official website resident roster, including name, medical school, postgraduate year, and additional degrees. Rosters were crossed-checked against social media posts from the official accounts. Each identified urology resident was queried in PubMed. Journal ranking was determined through Scimagojr; top-quartile journals were classified as Q1. Results: In total 131 of 145 programs were identified, and 1605 matched applicants spanning the 2017 to 2021 match cycles. The mean and median total publications were 2.44 and 1, respectively, and 2.17 and 1 when excluding case reports. 64.2% of applicants had at least one publication, and 42.2% had at least one urological publication. Applicants matching into higher-ranked programs had more research and urological research. Multivariable regression analysis revealed that Q1 research (β 2.38) and urology research (β 2.33) significantly affected rank. Match cycle analysis revealed an increase in total and urology-focused research, whereas regression analysis demonstrated significant increases in total publications (β 0.019) per cycle. Conclusion: Overall research, urology-focused research, first authorship, and publication in higher-ranked journals play an essential role in the urology match.

The gender role in the publishing of Authorships in high-impact orthopedic journals.

To evidence the existence of a gender gap in the orthopedic scientific literature by including also differences between some specific orthopedic surgery specialities, such as hands and feet. Then, we also considered gender role in the Authorship linked with the economic wealth of each country belonging to each Author. The gender of the first Authors of journals on orthopedics and sports medicine indexing in the Scopus database with the highest impact factor (IF) related to the year 2019, for the period from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020, were considered. A total of 11 journals were considered, including a total of 5474 articles, 1087 (19.86%) had a woman as the first Author and 4387 (80.14%) a man. During the studied period, the trend seems to be the same (p = 0.906): Men were significantly more producing than women in the orthopedic field both by considering the topic of the journal (p = .003), all the most impacted orthopedic journals (p < 0.001) and economies (p < 0.001). There was therefore a strong significance: In the orthopedic field, there were significantly more male researchers who presented their first name in scientific publications compared to females in all orthopedic subspecialties. The economically poorer countries published less and the role of women became almost absent.

Does sticking close to home make for better research? In‐state authorship and citation rates in public administration journals

AbstractObjectiveAlthough other social science disciplines have considered researcher positionality, whether a researcher belongs to the communities they study (insider) or does not (outsider), public administration scholars have yet to examine this aspect of scholarly production nor its impacts on perceptions of research quality.MethodsWe use a data set of 554 articles from eight top public administration journals that focus on a single or a few states in the United States as the research setting. Using in‐state authorship as a proxy for insider research, we test whether insider status significantly affects citation rates for these articles.ResultsFindings indicate that citation rates are higher for in‐state authors, but the journal impact factor serves as a critical moderating factor. Articles written by in‐state authors in Public Administration Review or Journal of Public Administration Research &amp; Theory (the field's top two journals) are cited around 30 percent more than out‐of‐state authors, and we estimate that the articles across journals likely to be cited most are written by in‐state authors.ConclusionAlthough there is room for strong insider and outsider research in social sciences, generally, and public administration, specifically, scholars should remain mindful of positionality from both the production and consumption sides of the research process.

The Formation Mechanism of Trust between Editors and Authors of Academic Journals from the Perspective of Symbolic Interaction Theory

The Formation Mechanism of Trust between Editors and Authors of Academic Journals from the Perspective of Symbolic Interaction Theory

The state of artificial intelligence in medical research: A survey of corresponding authors from top medical journals.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a subset of artificial intelligence that enables machines to understand and respond to human language through Large Language Models (LLMs)‥ These models have diverse applications in fields such as medical research, scientific writing, and publishing, but concerns such as hallucination, ethical issues, bias, and cybersecurity need to be addressed. To understand the scientific community's understanding and perspective on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research and authorship, a survey was designed for corresponding authors in top medical journals. An online survey was conducted from July 13th, 2023, to September 1st, 2023, using the SurveyMonkey web instrument, and the population of interest were corresponding authors who published in 2022 in the 15 highest-impact medical journals, as ranked by the Journal Citation Report. The survey link has been sent to all the identified corresponding authors by mail. A total of 266 authors answered, and 236 entered the final analysis. Most of the researchers (40.6%) reported having moderate familiarity with artificial intelligence, while a minority (4.4%) had no associated knowledge. Furthermore, the vast majority (79.0%) believe that artificial intelligence will play a major role in the future of research. Of note, no correlation between academic metrics and artificial intelligence knowledge or confidence was found. The results indicate that although researchers have varying degrees of familiarity with artificial intelligence, its use in scientific research is still in its early phases. Despite lacking formal AI training, many scholars publishing in high-impact journals have started integrating such technologies into their projects, including rephrasing, translation, and proofreading tasks. Efforts should focus on providing training for their effective use, establishing guidelines by journal editors, and creating software applications that bundle multiple integrated tools into a single platform.

Brazilian authorship gender trends on academic surgery: a bigdata analysis.

To evaluate the gender distribution of first and last authors with Brazilian surgical affiliations in PubMed-indexed surgical journals. Data from eligible surgical journals were retrieved using Scimago Journal & Country Rank 2021 and manually reviewed. Manuscripts published from 2018 to 2022 were included if at least one author was affiliated with a Brazilian institution and a surgical specialty. Data from 340 eligible surgical journals were included. We analyzed first and last authors' forenames of 1,881 manuscripts. Women comprised 16.7% of the first and 12.4% of the last authors. Analyzing the differences in gender trends in authorship across the five Brazilian regions, we found that the South had the highest representation, while the Midwest and North showed the lowest, respectively. Obstetrics and gynecology featured the highest percentage of women-first authors, whereas orthopedics had the lowest. For the last authorship, pediatric surgery showed the highest, with hand surgery having the lowest representation. Male first authors were 1.9 times more likely to engage in international collaborations. This study suggests the persistent underrepresentation of Brazilian women in surgical journal authorship. Local policy changes should be considered to encourage greater diversity and inclusivity in surgical research.
