Information Communication Technology (ICT) Tools for Preservation of Underwater Environment: A Vision-Based Posidonia Oceanica Monitoring

Abstract Underwater monitoring activities are crucial for the preservation of marine ecosystems. Currently, scuba divers are involved in data collection campaigns that are repetitive, dangerous, and expensive. This article describes the application of Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools to underwater visual data for monitoring purposes. The data refer to a Posidonia Oceanica survey mission carried out by a scuba diver using a Smart Dive Scooter equipped with visual acquisition and acoustic localization systems. An acoustic-based strategy for geo-referencing of the optical dataset is reported. It exploits the synchronization between the audio track extracted from a camera and the transponder pings adopted for the acoustic positioning. The positioning measurements are employed within an extended Kalman filter to estimate the diver's path during the mission. A visual odometry algorithm is implemented within the filter to refine the navigation state estimation of the diver with respect to the acoustic positioning only. Moreover, a smoothing step based on the Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother is applied to further improve the estimated diver's positions. Finally, the article reports the results of two different data processing for monitoring applications. The first one is an image mosaicking obtained by concatenating subsequent frames, whereas the second one refers to a qualitative distribution of the Posidonia Oceanica over the mission area accomplished through an image segmentation process. The two outcomes are plotted over a satellite image of the surveyed area, showing that the proposed process is an effective tool capable of facilitating divers in their monitoring and inspection activities.

“Saudades da festa!”: Triggering sensory memories of DIY electronic music through multimodal practices

DIY electronic music parties in São Paulo are deeply immersive, corporeal and sensorial. In March 2020, due to the pandemic, the parties stopped, and the scene gradually moved online manifesting itself on a new type of canvas. However, the digital manifestations of the virtual scene lost their performative and multisensorial appeal. By using multimodal elicitation methods (photos, videos, audio tracks, internet memories) this article is exploring the triggered or involuntary memory of embodied and sensorial affects that are being recalled and missed by the “clubbers.” The article intends to exhibit autoethnographic memories of party participation while problematizing the way in which the memory of this missed intense experience comes from a regular attendance to electronic music gatherings and its relationship with the complex feeling of “saudade.”

Developing an Internet-Based Trauma Recovery Nursing Intervention Based on Swanson's Theory of Caring for Trauma Recovery.

This study aimed to develop an Internet-based psychiatric nursing intervention, based on Swanson’s theory of caring, that could alleviate post-traumatic stress symptoms and improve the health functioning of adults who had experienced trauma. To evaluate the appropriateness and understanding of the program content, expert advice and content validity were examined using the content validity index. To analyze the participants’ responses and evaluate the appropriateness of conducting Internet-based programs, an online intervention program was implemented with five nurses between February and April 2020. The trauma recovery nursing intervention program was for adults who had experienced trauma and consisted of eight sessions, each lasting 30 min. It included a spoken audio track that was accompanied by visual prompts to provide knowledge on traumatic stress and introduce trauma recovery methods. Its online format made it convenient and widely accessible, and allowed for a low-intensity, cost-effective educational program. The program focused on providing self-help guidelines for clients to develop their mental and physical well-being. The results provide evidence that mental health nurses could develop and implement online programs to care for people who have experienced trauma. Such programs could provide trauma recovery for marginalized people unable to otherwise receive help.

Effects of attention to segmental vs. suprasegmental features on the speech intelligibility and comprehensibility of the EFL learners targeting the perception or production-focused practice

The present study investigated the training benefits of segmental vs. suprasegmental aspects for the intelligibility and comprehensibility of spoken English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Five groups of lower intermediate EFL learners were formed by random assignment. A pretest of the speaking skills, intelligibility, and comprehensibility of the learners’ speech confirmed that the five groups were homogeneous before starting the training program. The control group listened to authentic audio tracks in English, and discussed their contents, watched authentic English movies, and did exercises to improve speaking skills without receiving explicit segmental and suprasegmental explanations and exercises. The experimental groups received an explanation of segmental or suprasegmental features (during one-sixth of the teaching time) followed by production-focused or perception-focused practice (during another one-sixth of the teaching time). The total instruction time was the same for all five groups, i.e., 15 h. Students then took a posttest in speaking skills targeting their speech intelligibility and comprehensibility. The findings revealed that the speech intelligibility of learners who received segmental training followed by production-focused practice was better than that of all other groups. Learners who received suprasegmental instruction followed by production-focused practice outperformed all other groups in terms of comprehensibility.

Intralingual subtitles are subtitles written in the same language as the audio track of an audio-visual broadcast. The target audiences for intralingual subtitles are those with difficulties in comprehending the spoken narrative or dialogue. This article presents the feedback from a group of hard-of-hearing people on intralingual subtitling produced by a speech recognition program. The feedback was collected as a part of a larger research program using the focus group discussion method. The hard-of-hearing focus group commented on the readability, visual representation, flawlessness, and speaker identification of the intralingual subtitling. They listed ideas for enhancing the overall ease of following the broadcast and proposed improvements in the technical implementation, understandability, and quality of the subtitling. The group also wished that the subtitles would show more detail such as the speaker's specific word choices and dialect.

Documenting Horror: The Use of Sound in Non-Fiction 9/11 Films

While conventional 9/11 documentaries focus on the most known and visible images of the attack, three films that work against this tendency, 9/11 (2002), 11'09''01 - September 11 (2002) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), avoid the television news coverage of the towers and portray the attacks primarily through sound. These films avoid or scantly interject the too familiar footage, working instead with the audio track’s ability to convey the horrors of the event. By emphasizing sound, these films address a challenge familiar to documentary studies: how to appropriately represent a historical event whose tragic scale makes aesthetic representation questionable.

Using Augmented Reality to Enhance Nursing Education

Augmented and Virtual Reality are proliferating throughout daily life. Everyday utilities, such as Google Maps, deploy Augmented Reality (AR) to improve the user experience and increase its effectiveness. Similarly, Augmented and Virtual Reality have been used in the educational domain, where these applications have been shown to improve the learning curve and retention. In this study, AR is proposed as an innovative method to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the education of nursing students. We propose to introduce this innovative technology in the education of future nurses. Within this study the researchers use augmented reality (AR) to help nursing students learn about physical assessment techniques for the heart and the lungs. Researchers have demonstrated increased memory retention while using AR [14][15]. In this study, we provide a holographic overlay including the internal organs heart, ribcage, and lungs to increase the understanding of accurate placement of devices required for assessing cardiac and respiratory issues using anatomical landmarks. In addition, the visual aspects are supported with audio sound tracks to enhance learning. The ability to project images accurately placed onto real world physical objects using AR headsets could lead to increased retention and deeper understanding leading to precision performance related to techniques in physical assessment of the patient.

The role of the dorsal striatum in the recognition of emotions expressed by voice in Parkinson's disease.

Non-motor impairment such as emotion recognition deficit in both facial and vocal expressions has been previously reported in Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated whether the decoding of emotional prosody is impaired in PD and whether this deficit is related to striatal damage. Fifteen PD patients and 15 healthy controls (HCs) were requested to listen to six audio tracks and to recognize the emotions expressed by a professional actor while reading a meaning-neutral sentence. All subjects also received a structural MRI examination. Volumetric measurements were extracted for the striatum, a key region involved in emotional processing and typically impaired in PD. Decoding sadness conveyed by voice was impaired in PD compared with HC and was related to the volume of the dorsal striatum bilaterally. The dorsal striatum is involved in the decoding of vocal negative emotions in PD.

The application of digital tools in listening to music in music culture education

Listening to music is a dominant activity in the Music Culture teaching in which students develop critical thinking about aesthetic value of music. Teachers mostly use CDs and DVDs as important tools during the music listening activity despite the development of technology. On today’s classes we meet digitally literate students born in a completely digitalized world, which represents a great challenge for teachers. The students and the system expect a wide range of digital contents – audio tracks, videos, animations, photos, etc. Fortunately, teachers can choose digital tools which will be used for improvement of the teaching activity – music listening. Research has been conducted within this paper and its aim is to determine the way in which the teachers implement the music listening activity, as well as the influence of the use of digital tools that help the students with learning and motivation. 675 students from four general education schools from fifth to eighth grade and their teachers of Music Culture from Osijek-Baranya County, as well as Vukovar-Srijem County took part in this research. The research is experimental and it is divided into two phases – before and after the use of digital tools. The research results show that the digital tool Kahoot! helps students to learn the matter easily and that they are much more motivated during music listening. Also, both students and teachers have developed digital competences.

Possibilities of application of innovative methods with students of physical therapists

This article highlights the problems of using innovative technologies in teaching students who receive knowledge in the specialty “Physical therapy”. It aims not to simply acquire a certain level of language skills, but to fully integrate them into the student's life and expand the boundaries of his intellectual and personal search. Thus, in order to concretize the basis of this issue, a definition and a qualitative description of the terms “innovative educational technology” and “interactive learning” are given, the structure is clearly described and its components are characterized. Besides, the article notes a clear relationship between sensory physiologically grounded perception and mastering of information by a student and the type of its type, manifesting it in the form of the widest possible range of educational material – graphic materials, diagrams, tables, video, and audio tracks. The main methods of work used in the study are the analysis, classification, generalization, and systematization of scientific and theoretical material. The main purpose of learning a foreign language in higher education is to master it as a convenient means of communication and its integration as a device that allows you to expand the potential boundaries of the specialist. Most of the material in this article is devoted to the characteristics of the teacher, his role, and purpose in the modern world. One of the main tasks of the teacher as an intermediate link between the student and the information space is the preservation and constant maintenance of the level of motivation, the search for approaches for his active involvement in the process. Also, using the example of the innovative WebQuest method, you can draw up an algorithm of how classes should be held with the highest possible efficiency, that is, how to create an environment for students for the full and comprehensive development of their competencies in teaching a foreign language.

The article deals with the problem of calculating modern audio frequency track circuits, the working signal of which is a frequency-manipulated signal transmitting Bauer codes. Such signals have a wide spectrum, which leads to the error in the calculations performed according to the classical method for a single frequency. Increasing the code transfer rate in order to reduce the response time of track circuits further expands the signal spectrum, which negatively affects the safety of such rail circuits. To determine the width and composition of the signal spectrum, a discrete Fourier transformation is used. The new method of calculating rail circuits proposed in this article allows us to determine the root-mean-square value of the signal at the output of the rail circuit with a known amplitude-frequency characteristic of the rail circuit and the form of a complex signal at the input. The obtained ratio of the root-mean-square signal levels at the input and output of the rail circuit allows us to solve the problem of calculating the operating modes of the rail circuit taking into account its nonlinear amplitude-frequency characteristics and taking into account the complex signal form, including consideration of the specific transmitted Bauer code. This solution allows you to increase the reliability of the calculation of the adjustment tables of the tonal track circuits and, as a result, increase the reliability and safety of their operation.

Vocal-Accompaniment Compatibility Estimation Using Self-Supervised and Joint-Embedding Techniques

We propose a learning-based method of estimating the compatibility between vocal and accompaniment audio tracks, <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">i.e.</i> , how well they go with each other when played simultaneously. This task is challenging because it is difficult to formulate hand-crafted rules or construct a large labeled dataset to perform supervised learning. Our method uses self-supervised and joint-embedding techniques for estimating vocal-accompaniment compatibility. We train vocal and accompaniment encoders to learn a joint-embedding space of vocal and accompaniment tracks, where the embedded feature vectors of a compatible pair of vocal and accompaniment tracks lie close to each other and those of an incompatible pair lie far from each other. To address the lack of large labeled datasets consisting of compatible and incompatible pairs of vocal and accompaniment tracks, we propose generating such a dataset from songs using singing voice separation techniques, with which songs are separated into pairs of vocal and accompaniment tracks, and then original pairs are assumed to be compatible, and other random pairs are not. We achieved this training by constructing a large dataset containing 910,803 songs and evaluated the effectiveness of our method using ranking-based evaluation methods.

Automation of binaural headphone audio calibration on an artificial head

In studies with auralisation of audio stimuli over headphones, accurate presentation of headphone audio is critical for replicability and ecological validity. Audio stimuli levels are usually calibrated by placing studio quality headphones on an artificial head and torso simulator. Manual adjustment of audio tracks becomes laborious when the number of stimuli is large, especially for applications with large datasets. To increase reliability and productivity, we devised a stimulus-agnostic, automated calibration procedure for headphone audio via an artificial head and torso simulator, with a LabVIEW implementation available at doi:10.21979/N9/0KYIAU.•The procedure uses a National Instruments NI-9234 data acquisition module and works with any ITU‑T P.58:2013 and ANSI/ASA S 3.36:2012 compliant artificial head measurement systems.•The procedure works by an adjustment to a generic guess, followed by a modified binary search, wherein the audio stimuli are calibrated to within a user-specified tolerance level.•Each stimulus in a validation run to calibrate 250 stimuli to 65.0 ± 0.5 dB was played back an average of 2.22 ± 0.92 times before successful calibration, thus demonstrating the robustness and efficiency of our proposed method.

AutoFoley: Artificial Synthesis of Synchronized Sound Tracks for Silent Videos With Deep Learning

In movie productions, the Foley Artist is responsible for creating an overlay soundtrack that helps the movie come alive for the audience. This requires the artist to first identify the sounds that will enhance the experience for the listener thereby reinforcing the Directors's intention for a given scene. In this paper, we present AutoFoley, a fully-automated deep learning tool that can be used to synthesize a representative audio track for videos. AutoFoley can be used in the applications where there is either no corresponding audio file associated with the video or in cases where there is a need to identify critical scenarios and provide a synthesized, reinforced soundtrack. An important performance criterion of the synthesized soundtrack is to be time-synchronized with the input video, which provides for a realistic and believable portrayal of the synthesized sound. Unlike existing sound prediction and generation architectures, our algorithm is capable of precise recognition of actions as well as inter-frame relations in fast moving video clips by incorporating an interpolation technique and Temporal Relationship Networks (TRN). We employ a robust multi-scale Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) associated with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for a better understanding of the intricate input-to-output associations over time. To evaluate AutoFoley, we create and introduce a large scale audio-video dataset containing a variety of sounds frequently used as Foley effects in movies. Our experiments show that the synthesized sounds are realistically portrayed with accurate temporal synchronization of the associated visual inputs. Human qualitative testing of AutoFoley show over 73% of the test subjects considered the generated soundtrack as original, which is a noteworthy improvement in cross-modal research in sound synthesis.
