1) The reasons for severing vv. 2-9 from this material are given in Excursus A. 2) Also Jotham, whose reign, to judge by 2 Chron. xxvii, was an extension of the militaristic policies of his father which brought him victories almost to the very end, cf. 2 Kings xv 37. But the year of his accession to the throne is in doubt, and H. TADMOR even doubts that Jotham reigned independently, cf. of Yaudi, Scripta Hierosolymitana, Vol. VIII, (1961) pp. 261-5 and Ency. Biblica IV (Heb.), s. v. Chronology. 3) Naturally, only a small portion of the extant exegetical literature on Isaiah can be cited. Of the commentaries, reference will be made to five which, in our opinion, are representative of the best: E. J. KISSANE, The Book of Isaiah I, Dublin (1941); 0. PROCKSCH, Jesaia I, KAT, Leipzig (1930); J. SKINNER, Isaiah Chs. i-xxxix, Cambridge Bible, (1930); G. B. GRAY, The Book of Isaiah I, (I.C.C.) New York, (1912); B. DUHM, Das BuchJesaia, HAT G6ttingen (1914). A sixth work, though not strictly a commentary, is indispensable for Isaiah studies: Y. KAUFMANN, Toledot ha-Emunah ha-Yisraelit, III, (1947), pp. 147-256 and its translation-abridgement by M. GREENBERG, The Religion of Israel (1960), pp. 278-395. 4) Until his defeat by Tiglath-pileser III in 738. For an account of this episode and its date based on a new reading of the pertinent Assyrian texts, cf. TADMOR, op cit., pp. 232-271, which finally resolves the century-old debate regarding the identification of Azriyau with Uzziah. But contrary to TADMOR, it is possiblethat Uzziah was no longer alive in 738 when his coalition was defeated. As for III R 9, 2 and 3, (cf. H. RAWLINSON, The Cuneiform Inscriptions of Iestern Asia III, 1870), they are probably non-sequential. Line III (...the city X which Azriy)au had annexed, even if properly restored, can refer to Uzziah's earlier offensive, i.e. in 743 when Tiglath-pileser began his Syrian campaign with the siege of Arpad. 5) 2 Kings xiv 21f.; xv 1-5; 2 Chron. xxvi 1-15 (and Hos. v 10, acc. to TADMOR op. cit., 250). 6) Ibid. and ANET, (1950), pp. 282-4.
