Think long‐term, embrace persistence, flexibility

Kate Magro's background in domestic and international relief work, helping communities recover from political instability and natural disasters, contributed to her becoming a more effective and innovative student affairs professional. As a self‐described task‐oriented, driven individual, working in those unstable, unpredictable environments where “nothing works as you anticipated,” taught her the importance of flexibility. It came down to finding out “the overarching goal and how to be flexible about getting there,” said Magro, now Associate Vice President for Student Development at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Co‐instructor and Field Supervisor for PBAU's international and community development program.

In this invited article, we reflect on how SoTL came to be, at least within one institution, Mount Royal University (MRU). We caught up with Dr. Jim Zimmer, Associate Professor in General Education and past- Associate Vice-President of Teaching and Learning to discuss the early days of SoTL at MRU, and his perspectives and role in laying the foundations for SoTL at MRU. We also discuss how Jim has seen SoTL evolve over the last 10-15 years and some of the key catalysts that, in his view, formalized SoTL as an integral part of MRU.

3 Questions for an Online Learning Leader

Dr. Jill Drake is both Professor in the College of Education and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia. In the latter role, she currently oversees academic programming and assessment, transfer agreements, and internal curriculum approval processes. Jill has experience teaching face-to-face and online courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in educational foundations, early childhood, and elementary education. Her research focuses on assessment in K-5 mathematics education, problem posing, and teaching mathematics to diverse populations. Internationally recognized for her research on problem posing, Dr. Drake has published two mathematics activity books for high school and middle school students. Prior to her appointment at the University of West Georgia, Jill was an educator at the early childhood, elementary, and middle school levels. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master of Education in K-12 School Counseling, and a Specialist in Health and Rehabilitative Services at Florida State University. She holds a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Supervision from the University of Georgia and completed a postdoctoral program in math education at the University of West Georgia.

Officials at the University of Florida are proud of the institution's 97% retention rate, said Tammy Aagard, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management. But do all students get the support they need all the way through completion? Enrollment management efforts at the institution include initiatives to propel the neediest students to graduation. There tends to be a gap between students who receive Pell grants and those who don't in graduation rates and time to graduation, Aagard said, so officials have looked closely at that.
