Alleviative Effects of C60 on the Trophic Transfer of Cadmium along the Food Chain in Aquatic Environment.

C60 could enhance the accumulation of pollutants in organisms, but their effects on higher trophic levels remain unknown. In the present study, the transfer of C60 from Daphnia magna to zebrafish (Danio rerio) and its effects on Cd transfer were investigated. The results showed that C60 could be transferred from D. magna to zebrafish through dietary exposure and accumulate mainly in the intestines, but biomagnification was not observed. The presence of C60 promoted accumulation of Cd in D. magna. However, it decreased Cd burden in the higher trophic level (zebrafish), displaying an alleviative effect on the trophic transfer of Cd along the food chain. To explore the underlying mechanisms, the release of Cd from D. magna in digestive fluids and changes in zebrafish digestive physiology were further investigated. The results showed that C60 did not inhibit Cd release from D. magna, but stimulated the digestive tracts of zebrafish to excrete Cd earlier and in a greater amount, which consequently lowered assimilation efficiency of Cd in zebrafish. Overall, the present study showed the trophic transfer of C60 in the aquatic food chain and revealed the effects of C60 on trophic transfer of Cd along the food chain in aquatic environment.

Dietary metal bioavailability in razor clam Sinonovacula constricta under fluctuating seston environments

To understand the potential risks of dietary metals to marine bivalves, it is important to study the interaction between dietary metal bioaccumulation and bivalve feeding behavior. Key processes in affecting the dietary metal influx are the selection of different particles during the ingestion process as well as the differential assimilation of metals during the digestion process. In this study, we quantified the influences of seston quality and quantity on the dietary assimilation of Cd and Zn as well as pre-ingestion particle selectivity in a razor clam Sinonovacula constricta following feeding on radiolabeled diatoms and sediments with different mixtures at four food concentrations. Bioavailability of 109Cd and 65Zn from seston was measured by assimilation efficiency (AE) using a pulse-chase feeding technique. The AEs of Cd and Zn were significantly affected by the seston quantity and quality (higher for Zn than they were for Cd and higher for diatoms than for suspended sediments), but were independent of the presence of other particles during the feeding process. Dual gamma radiotracer technique was further employed to study pre-ingestion particle selectivity. Particle selectivity was weak during pre-ingestion in razor clams, although there was evidence that clams might be able to differentiate particles during the process of pseudofeces production. Our study demonstrated that seston composition and quantity substantially affected the bioavailability of Cd and Zn to the razor clams. The results are important to understand the bioaccumulation of metals in clams living in dynamic food environments of estuary.

Influences of TiO2 nanoparticles on dietary metal uptake in Daphnia magna

Increasing applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) have intensified the risk of environmental contamination. Since nano-TiO2 can absorb metals and be consumed as ‘food’ by zooplankton but also can interact with phytoplankton, they could significantly disturb the existing metal assimilation patterns. In the present study, we quantified the dietary assimilation of Cd and Zn from nano-TiO2 and algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) at comparable particle concentrations as well as in complex food environment (variable food quality and quantity) in a freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna using the radiotracer technique. For both nano-TiO2 and algae as food, the feeding food quality and depuration food quantity significantly affected the assimilation efficiencies (AEs) of Cd and Zn. At feeding food quantity of 1 mg/L to 10 mg/L without food in depuration, the AEs of Cd and Zn from nano-TiO2 were lower than those from algae. When food was added during depuration, the influences of nano-TiO2 on metal AEs were variable due to the differential effects of food quantity on the gut passage of nano-TiO2 and algae. Furthermore, mixed nano-TiO2 and algae had the lowest metal AEs compared to sole nano-TiO2 or algae as a result of interaction between nano-TiO2 and algae during feeding. Overall, this study showed the distinguishing metal AEs between nano-TiO2 and algae, and that nano-TiO2 could significantly reduce the existing metal AEs from algae. More attention should be paid to the potential roles of nano-TiO2 in disturbing metal assimilation in the environmental risk assessments of nanoparticles.

Quantifying diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex using stable isotope tracers

Gammarids are aquatic amphipods widely used for water quality monitoring. To investigate the copper and cadmium diet-borne metal uptake in Gammarus pulex, we adapted the pulse-chase stable isotopes-based approach to determine the food ingestion rate (IR), the gut retention time (GRT) and the metal assimilation efficiencies (AE). G. pulex were fed with 65Cu-, 106Cd-, and 53Cr-labeled alder leaves for 7.5h and then with unlabeled leaves for 5d. The metal stable isotope contents in the gammarids, leaves, filtered water and periodically collected feces were determined. Chromium was poorly assimilated by the gammarids; thus, Cr was used as an unassimilated tracer. The first tracer defecation occurred before the first feces harvest, indicating a gut passage time of less than 9h. A 24-h GRT and a 0.69gg−1d−1 IR were estimated. The Cd AE value was estimated as 5–47%, depending on the assimilation determination method applied. The Cu AE value could not be evaluated regardless of the determination method used, most likely because of the rapid Cu regulation in gammarids in addition to analytical uncertainties when determining the Cu content in leaves. Application of the Cd AE value in the framework of the biodynamic bioaccumulation model shows that the diet-borne uptake of Cd significantly contributes (66–95%) to the metal bioaccumulation in G. pulex fed with alder leaves.

Interaction of functionalized fullerenes and metal accumulation in Daphnia magna

In aquatic environments, transformation of pollutants by association with functionalized carbon-based nanoparticles can dramatically change their cycling pathways. The present study quantified the uptake and depuration behavior of cadmium and zinc bound with functionalized fullerene nanoparticles (f-nC(60)) in a freshwater cladoceran, Daphnia magna, in a well-dispersed medium. Metal uptake proceeded with a linear pattern during the 8-h exposure period, and the uptake rate constants (ku) were 1.3-fold to 1.4-fold higher for Cd or comparable for Zn bound with f-nC(60) than those of the free ones. The assimilation efficiencies of Cd and Zn bound with f-nC(60) were significantly enhanced when compared with those metals bound with algal food. Furthermore, the depuration of metals bound with f-nC(60) was relatively slower compared to the depuration of metals bound with carbon nanotubes. A longer exposure to f-nC(60) resulted in an even slower depuration of metals. The authors conclude that metal binding with f-nC(60) as modified nanoparticles could serve as a new pathway for the elevated metal accumulation in Daphnia.

Cadmium bioavailability to Hyalella azteca from a periphyton diet compared to an artificial diet and application of a biokinetic model

Differences between the bioavailability of cadmium in a periphyton diet and an artificial laboratory diet (TetraMin®) have important consequences for predicting bioaccumulation and toxicity in the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca. The assimilation efficiency (AE) of Cd was compared between periphyton and TetraMin® at low (1510 and 358nmol/g ash-free dry mass respectively) and chronically lethal (31,200 and 2890nmol/g ash-free dry mass respectively) Cd concentrations and in fresh and dry forms using a 109Cd radiotracer pulse-chase feeding technique. Assimilation efficiency of Cd from periphyton (AE=3–14%) was lower than that for TetraMin® (AE=44–86%) regardless of Cd concentration or food form. Ingestion rate (IR) was lower for dry than fresh forms of periphyton (0.042 and 0.16g AFDM/g H. azteca/day respectively) and TetraMin® (0.19 and 0.87AFDM/g H. azteca/day respectively) and depuration rate (ke) did not differ statistically with food type, form or Cd concentration (0.032–0.094d−1). Biokinetic models with parameters of AE, IR and ke were used to estimate bioaccumulation from the separate food types. These estimates were compared to those from an independent chronic Cd saturation bioaccumulation model. While the model estimates did not concur, a sensitivity analysis indicated that AE and IR were the most influential biokinetic model parameters for Cd in periphyton and TetraMin® respectively. It was hypothesized that AE was underestimated for Cd in periphyton due to a non-adapted gut enzyme system and IR was overestimated for Cd in TetraMin® due to an initial rapid ingestion phase in H. azteca's feeding habits. This research demonstrated the importance of using ecologically relevant food types in laboratory experiments and verifying acute biokinetic model predictions of dietary metal contribution with those derived from a chronic exposure which is more representative of a field exposure scenario.

Assimilation of Elements and Digestion in Grass Shrimp Pre-Exposed to Dietary Mercury

Grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio were fed mercury (Hg)-contaminated oligochaetes for 15 days and analyzed for Hg, cadmium (Cd), and carbon assimilation efficiencies (AE) as well as toxicological end points related to digestion. Disproportionate increases in stable Hg concentrations in shrimp did not appear to be related to partitioning to trophically available Hg in worms. Hg AE by pre-exposed shrimp reached a plateau (approximately 53 %), whereas Cd AE varied (approximately 40-60 %) in a manner that was not dose-dependent. Carbon AE did not differ among treatments (approximately 69 %). Gut residence time was not impacted significantly by Hg pre-exposure (grand median approximately 465 min), however, there was a trend between curves showing percentages of individuals with markers in feces over time versus treatment. Feces-elimination rate did not vary with dietary pre-exposure. Extracellular protease activity varied approximately 1.9-fold but did not exhibit dose-dependency. pH increased over the range of Hg pre-exposures within the anterior (pH approximately 5.33-6.51) and posterior (pH approximately 5.29-6.25) regions of the cardiac proventriculus and Hg assimilation exhibited a negative relationship to hydrogen ion concentrations. The results of this study indicate that previous Hg ingestion can elicit post-assimilatory impacts on grass shrimp digestive physiology, which may, in turn, influence Hg assimilation during subsequent digestive cycles.

Role of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in the Elevated Uptake and Retention of Cadmium and Zinc in Daphnia magna

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO(2)) are now widely applied in consumer products, and the dispersion of nano-TiO(2) may adsorb metals and modify their behavior and bioavailability in the aquatic environment. In the present study, the aqueous uptake, dietary assimilation efficiency (AE), and efflux rate constant (k(e)) of two toxic metals (cadmium-Cd, and zinc-Zn) adsorbed on nano-TiO(2) in a freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna were quantified. The biokinetics was then compared to daphnids that were exposed only to dissolved metals as controls. The aqueous uptake of Cd and Zn involved an initial rapid uptake and then an apparent saturation, and the uptake of metals was accompanied by an ingestion of nano-TiO(2). The AEs of Cd and Zn adsorbed on nano-TiO(2) were 24.6 ± 2.4-44.5 ± 3.7% and 30.4 ± 3.4-51.8 ± 5.0%, respectively, and decreased with increasing concentrations of nano-TiO(2). Furthermore, the difference between the AEs of Cd and Zn indicated that the desorption of Cd and Zn from nano-TiO(2) may have occurred within the gut of daphnids. With the use of algae as carrier, the AEs of Cd and Zn adsorbed on nano-TiO(2) were significantly higher than those of Cd and Zn directly from nano-TiO(2). The efflux rate constants of Cd and Zn adsorbed on nano-TiO(2) in the zooplankton were significantly lower than those of Cd and Zn not adsorbed on nano-TiO(2). Our study shows that the uptake and retention of toxic metals is enhanced when they are adsorbed on nano-TiO(2), and suggests more attention be paid to the potential influences of nano-TiO(2) on the bioavailability and toxicity of other contaminants.

The influence of metal speciation on the bioavailability and sub-cellular distribution of cadmium to the terrestrial isopod, Porcellio dilatatus

Cadmium is a non-essential toxic metal that is able to bioaccumulate in both flora fauna and has the potential to biomagnify in some food chains. However, the form in which cadmium is presented to consumers can alter the bioavailability and possibly the internal distribution of assimilated Cd. Previous studies in our laboratory highlighted differences in Cd assimilation among isopods when they were provided with a plant-based food with either Cd biologically incorporated into plant tissue or superficially amended with ionic Cd 2+. Cd is known for its high affinity for sulphur ligands in cysteine residues which form the basis for metal-binding proteins such as metallothionein. This study compares Cd assimilation efficiency (AE) in Porcellio dilatatus fed with food amended with either cadmium cysteinate or cadmium nitrate in an examination of the influence of Cd speciation on metal bioavailability followed by an examination of the sub-cellular distribution using a centrifugal fractionation protocol. As hypothesized the AE of Cd among isopods fed with Cd(NO 3) 2 (64%, SE = 5%) was higher than AE for isopods fed with Cd(Cys) 2 (20%, SE = 3%). The sub-cellular distribution also depended on the Cd species provided. Those isopods fed Cd(Cys) 2 allocated significantly more Cd to the cell debris and organelles fractions at the expense of allocation to metal-rich granules (MRG). The significance of the difference in sub-cellular distribution with regard to toxicity is discussed. This paper demonstrates that the assimilation and internal detoxification of Cd is dependent on the chemical form of Cd presented to the isopod.

Single and joint effects of Zn and Cd on Porcellio scaber (Crustacea, Isopoda) exposed to artificially contaminated food

This study aimed at determining effects of Zn, Cd and their equitoxic mixtures on metal assimilation and food consumption of the terrestrial isopod Porcellio scaber, in relation to metal availability in the food. Cd was four times less water-extractable than Zn. Cd or Zn extractability was affected neither by metal concentration nor by the presence of the other metal. In single metal exposures, assimilation efficiency (AE) was up to five times higher for Cd than for Zn. In a mixture, AE of Cd significantly increased at low mixture concentrations and decreased at high mixture concentrations. AE of Zn significantly increased at intermediate mixture concentrations. Effects of the Zn and Cd mixture on food consumption were additive (28-day EC50,total=1.10TU; EC50,water-extractable=1.18TU) when based on total and water-extractable concentrations but antagonistic when related to internal metal concentrations in the isopods (EC50,internal=1.40TU).

Assimilation and subcellular partitioning of elements by grass shrimp collected along an impact gradient

Chronic exposure to polluted field conditions can impact metal bioavailability in prey and may influence metal transfer to predators. The present study investigated the assimilation of Cd, Hg and organic carbon by grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio, collected along an impact gradient within the New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuary. Adult shrimp were collected from five Staten Island, New York study sites, fed 109Cd- or 203Hg-labeled amphipods or 14C-labeled meals and analyzed for assimilation efficiencies (AE). Subsamples of amphipods and shrimp were subjected to subcellular fractionation to isolate metal associated with a compartment presumed to contain trophically available metal (TAM) (metal associated with heat-stable proteins [HSP – e.g., metallothionein-like proteins], heat-denatured proteins [HDP – e.g., enzymes] and organelles [ORG]). TAM- 109Cd% and TAM- 203Hg% in radiolabeled amphipods were ∼64% and ∼73%, respectively. Gradients in AE- 109Cd% (∼54% to ∼75%) and AE- 203Hg% (∼61% to ∼78%) were observed for grass shrimp, with the highest values exhibited by shrimp collected from sites within the heavily polluted Arthur Kill complex. Population differences in AE- 14C% were not observed. Assimilated 109Cd% partitioned to the TAM compartment in grass shrimp varied between ∼67% and ∼75%. 109Cd bound to HSP in shrimp varied between ∼15% and ∼47%, while 109Cd associated with metal-sensitive HDP was ∼17% to ∼44%. Percentages of assimilated 109Cd bound to ORG were constant at ∼10%. Assimilated 203Hg% associated with TAM in grass shrimp did not exhibit significant variation. Percentages of assimilated 203Hg bound to HDP (∼47%) and ORG (∼11%) did not vary among populations and partitioning of 203Hg to HSP was not observed. Using a simplified biokinetic model of metal accumulation from the diet, it is estimated that site-specific variability in Cd AE by shrimp and tissue Cd burdens in field-collected prey (polychaetes Nereis spp.) could potentially result in up to ∼3.2-fold differences in the dose of Cd assimilated by shrimp from a meal in the field. The results of this study also suggest that chronic field exposure can impact mechanisms of metal transport across the gut epithelium that do not influence carbon assimilation. Differences in the assimilation and subcellular partitioning of metal may have important implications for metal toxicity in impacted shrimp populations.

Does subcellular distribution in plants dictate the trophic bioavailability of cadmium to Porcellio dilatatus (crustacea, isopoda)?

The present study examined how subcellular partitioning of Cd in plants with different strategies to store and detoxify Cd may affect trophic transfer of Cd to the isopod Porcellio dilatatus. The plant species used were Lactuca sativa, a horticultural metal accumulator species; Thlaspi caerulescens, a herbaceous hyperaccumulator species; and the nonaccumulator, T. arvense. Taking into account that differences in subcellular distribution of Cd in plants might have an important role in the bioavailability of Cd to a consumer, a differential centrifugation technique was adopted to separate plant leaf tissues into four different fractions: cell debris, organelles, heat-denatured proteins, and heat-stable proteins (metallothionein-like proteins). Plants were grown in replicate hydroponic systems and were exposed for 7 d to 100 microM Cd spiked with 109Cd. After a 14-d feeding trial, net assimilation of Cd in isopods following consumption of T. caerulescens and T. arvense leaves reached 16.0 +/- 2.33 and 21.9 +/- 1.94 microg/g animal, respectively. Cadmium assimilation efficiencies were significantly lower in isopods fed T. caerulescens (10.0 +/- 0.92%) than in those fed T. arvense (15.0 +/- 1.03%). In further experiments, Cd assimilation efficiencies were determined among isopods provided with purified subcellular fractions of the three plants. On the basis of our results, Cd bound to heat-stable proteins was the least bioavailable to isopods (14.4-19.6%), while Cd bound to heat-denatured proteins was the most trophically available to isopods (34.4-52.8%). Assimilation efficiencies were comparable in isopods fed purified subcellular fractions from different plants, further indicating the importance of subcellular Cd distribution in the assimilation. These results point to the ecological relevance of the subcellular Cd distribution in plants, which directly influence the trophic transfer of Cd to the animal consumer.

The influences of ambient and body calcium on cadmium and zinc accumulation in Daphnia magna

The dissolved uptake rate constant (k(u)), dietary assimilation efficiency (AE), and efflux rate constant (k(e)) of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) were quantified in a freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna cultured at different ambient calcium (Ca) concentrations. The animals were first acclimated to different ambient Ca levels for 7 d from birth before the biokinetic measurements at corresponding Ca levels. With increasing ambient Ca level from 0.5 to 200 mg/L, the body Ca content increased from 0.91% (as tissue dry wt) to 3.75%. The k(u) for Cd decreased by nine times; for Zn it decreased by 2.6 times; and the AE decreased from 62 to 19% and from 46 to 24% for Cd and Zn, respectively. In contrast, Ca levels did not affect significantly the efflux rates of Cd and Zn. The effects of ambient and body Ca levels were separated by measuring the biokinetic parameters in both low--(0.5 mg/L) and high--(50 mg/L) Ca environments using the daphnids containing different body Ca levels. Ambient and body Ca levels had synergistic inhibitory effects on the AEs of Cd and Zn; however, the protective effects against dissolved uptake of Cd and Zn were explained fully by the effects of ambient Ca. The body Ca either had no significant effect (for Cd) or stimulative effects (for Zn). Multiphase biokinetic modeling using the measured parameters gave reasonable predictions of the body burdens of Cd and Zn in different Ca environments. Our results better explain the role of ambient and body Ca in the accumulation of Cd and Zn in D. magna.

Evaluating the trophic transfer of cadmium, polonium, and methylmercury in an estuarine food chain

We examined the transfer of Cd, methylmercury (MeHg), and Po in an estuarine food chain (from phytoplankton to zooplankton [Daphnia pulex] to killifish [Fundulus heteroclitus] and, finally, to juvenile striped bass [Morone saxatilis]) to better understand both the extent to which these elements may biomagnify and the underlying mechanisms governing this biomagnification. Among the phytoplankton examined (Cyclotella meneghiniana and Chlamdomonas reinhardtii), metal uptake was rapid, and volume concentration factors for all metals reached values between 10(4) and 10(5). The resulting assimilation efficiencies (AEs) of ingested metals in all animals were highest for MeHg, with values greater than 76%. The AEs of Cd were 21 to 33% in D. pulex, 1 to 16% in F. heteroclitus, and 38 to 56% in M. saxatilis. Polonium AEs were 69 to 87% in D. pulex, 25 to 41% in F. heteroclitus, and 9 to 21% in M. saxatilis. Loss rate constants (ke) of metals in D. pulex ranged from 0.04/d for MeHg to 0.39/d for Po; metal ke values for F. heteroclitus ranged from 0.01 to 0.02/d. Using a kinetic model, we showed that the trophic transfer factor, defined as the ratio of metal concentration in predatory animals to metal concentration in prey organisms, was greater than unity for all three metals in D. pulex feeding on phytoplankton, suggesting that these metals may be biomagnified at this trophic step. In killifish feeding on D. pulex, the trophic transfer factor was consistently greater than one for MeHg, consistently less than one for Cd, and from 0.1 to 1.4 for Po, suggesting that both MeHg and Po have the potential to biomagnify at this trophic step.

Trophic transfer of trace metals: subcellular compartmentalization in bivalve prey, assimilation by a gastropod predator and in vitro digestion simulations

The uptake of trace metals from the diet is a significant route for their entry into marine animals, and the chemical form of trace metals accumulated by food organisms is one potential factor controlling their assimilation from the diet. Therefore, we investigated relationships between the assimilation efficiencies (AE) of the trace metals Cd, Ag and Zn in the neogastropod mollusc Nassarius festivus and their subcellular compartmentalized fractionation in selected tissues of 4 species of bivalve prey, seeking to identify the relative trophic availabilities of such different fractions. We also sought parallels between the AE of N. festivus and 2 in vitro models of digestion, a generalised invertebrate model and a human digestion model. The bivalves were the scallop Chlamys nobilis, the clam Marcia hiantina, the green mussel Perna viridis and the oyster Saccostrea cucullata, as these show a range of accumulated trace metal concentrations and detoxificatory binding to subcellular compartments. Measured assimilation efficiencies of N. festivus for Cd, Ag and Zn from invertebrate prey tissues are very high in comparison to other marine animals, assimilation occurs from accumulated metal in prey bound in subcellular fractions across the insoluble and soluble spectrum, and assimilation is best modelled in vitro by a human digestion model with low pH (1.3) rather than an invertebrate model (pH 5.6). It is concluded that what is trophically available to one predator (feeding on one prey type) is not necessarily trophically available to another (taxonomically separated) predator even if feeding on the same prey, given the variability between invertebrate digestive systems. Variation in the subcellular distribution of accumulated trace metals within different prey will also add variation in trophic availability even for the same metal.

Metallothionein turnover, cytosolic distribution and the uptake of Cd by the green mussel Perna viridis

We examined the relationship between Cd kinetics (uptake from solution and diet, and efflux), metallothionein turnover, and changes in the cytosolic distribution of accumulated Cd between protein fractions in the green mussel Perna viridis. We pre-exposed the mussels to 5, 20, 50 and 200 μg l −1 of Cd for 1 week and determined the biokinetics of Cd uptake and efflux in the mussels. The dietary assimilation efficiency of Cd increased by 2 times following exposure to 20–200 μg l −1 Cd, but the dissolved uptake rate was unchanged by pre-exposure to any Cd concentrations. The efflux rate of Cd was also similar among control and Cd pre-exposed mussels. The cytosolic distribution of Cd in the mussels that had been exposed to dissolved Cd, showed that besides metallothionein (7000–20,000 Da), high molecular weight proteins (>20,000 Da) were important for Cd binding and depuration. In general, the Cd pre-exposed mussels had higher metallothionein turnover with a higher metallothionein synthesis rate, but similar metallothionein breakdown rates as the control mussels. Metallothionein synthesis rate was correlated to the dietary assimilation of Cd, whereas metallothionein breakdown and Cd efflux rate were independent of each other. This study provides important new information for the role of metallothionein turnover on Cd kinetics in an aquatic invertebrate.

Size‐dependence of the potential for metal biomagnification in early life stages of marine fish

We investigated the bioaccumulation of metals (Cd, Se, and Zn) in different juvenile sizes of black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegeli by applying a biokinetic model. A series of experiments were conducted to determine the physiological kinetic parameters, including uptake rate constant of waterborne metals, ingestion rate, assimilation efficiency of dietary metals, efflux rate constant, and specific growth rate as a function of fish size. Body concentration of metals as a function of body size was then simulated by the kinetic model and compared with the actual measurements. The uptake rate constants decreased with increasing fish size, with an allometric exponent (b) of 0.615 to 0.662. Ingestion rate was also negatively correlated with the fish size (b = -0.604). Assimilation efficiencies of Cd were independent of body size, whereas those of Se and Zn increased with fish size. In contrast, efflux rate constants and growth rate constants for metals were comparable in different sizes of fish. Predicted concentrations of Cd and Zn were comparable to actual measurements and were negatively correlated with fish size. Ingestion rate was the most important parameter accounting for the size-dependent bioaccumulation of metals, followed by dietary assimilation. We further showed that the trophic transfer potentials of Se and Zn were > 1 in smaller fish but then reduced to < 1 in larger ones, suggesting that trophic transfer potentials are highly size dependent in marine fish.

Cadmium assimilation in the terrestrial isopod, Porcellio dilatatus--is trophic transfer important?

Terrestrial isopods have become important tools for the ecotoxicological assessment of metal-contaminated soils. Their value as an invertebrate model is partly because of their extraordinary capacity to bioaccumulate toxic metals from the environment. Replication of this accumulation process in the laboratory has in the past relied on the amendment of organic food substrates through the addition of inorganic metal salts. However, the bioavailability of the metals when presented through doping regimes may differ from the bioavailability of metals in nature, because over time metals become biologically compartmentalised and form complexes with organic molecules. This study examines the differential bioavailability of Cd to the terrestrial isopod, Porcellio dilatatus, when presented as either a Cd-amended diet or pre-incorporated biologically into lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Isopods were either provided with lettuce contaminated superficially with Cd(NO(3))(2) or lettuce grown hydroponically in growth media containing 100 microM Cd(NO(3))(2). Assimilation efficiency of Cd was greater among isopods that were fed the amended diet (71%, S.E.=7%), than among isopods feeding on biologically contaminated lettuce (52%, S.E.=5%) and demonstrates that speciation of Cd is likely to influence the rate of Cd assimilation and accumulation in a laboratory test.

Assimilation efficiencies of Cd and Zn in the common carp ( Cyprinus carpio): Effects of metal concentration, temperature and prey type

The impact of several factors on the assimilation efficiency (AE) of Cd and Zn from food in the common carp ( Cyprinus carpio) was studied. Tested prey species were midge larvae ( Chironomus riparius), zebra mussels ( Dreissena polymorpha) and oligochaetes ( Tubifex tubifex). The Cd load of the larvae did not affect the Cd AE in the carp. The Zn AE however, was negatively related to the Zn load of the prey. Food quantity and starvation of the carp did not significantly affect the Cd AE. For Zn, a significant decrease in AE was found when carp were fed ad libitum. Decreasing the temperature from 25 °C to 15 °C did not influence the Cd AE, while for Zn a significant decrease of the AE was measured. Carp assimilated Cd from both zebra mussels and oligochaetes with a significantly lower efficiency in comparison to the midge larvae, although Zn AEs was prey independent.

Multigenerational cadmium acclimation and biokinetics in Daphnia magna

A Cd exposure (3 μg L −1) experiment was conducted for six successive generations to investigate the responses to chronic Cd stress in Daphnia magna. We observed a biphasic accumulation of Cd in the six generations and suggested a similar pattern with respect to daphnids' tolerance. Cd assimilation efficiencies, daphnid growth, and reproduction corresponded to the changes of tolerance, which was partially accounted for by metallothionein induction. When maternally exposed neonates grew in Cd-free water for one or two generations, their growth, MT concentration and biokinetic parameters partially or totally recovered. The rapid recovery suggests the high potential for ecological restoration from Cd pollution. Our results indicate that the tolerance of sensitive D. magna clones to Cd was dependent on long-term or multigenerational exposure. The tolerance developed within the first several generations might not be maintained, and the animals may become even more sensitive to Cd stress in subsequent generations.
