The invasive Asian Green Mussel, Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), breeds in Trinity Inlet, tropical northern Australia

In August (dry season) of 2001, the Asian Green Mussel, Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), was found in high densities on the hull of a foreign vessel moored within Trinity Inlet, northern Queensland, Australia. Surveys conducted between late 2001 and July 2003 in response to this invasive marine pest detected mussels on other floating structures throughout the Inlet, indicating at least one spawning and successful recruitment event had taken place in the Inlet between 2001 and 2003. At the completion of surveys in July 2003, a total of 40 recruits with a range of 30.1 mm to 161.0 mm shell length (mean 95.0 mm shell length) had been recovered from the Inlet. At least four additional recruits from this Trinity Inlet population are known to have been translocated to Innisfail 90 km south of Cairns on the hull of a yacht during this period.

RICE GREEN REVOLUTION IN ASIA AND ITS TRANSFERABILITY TO AFRICA: AN INTRODUCTION

Drawing on the experiences of Asian countries, we attempt to identify the transferability of Asian Green Revolution to sub-Saharan Africa by examining whether there is a common set of factors affecting rice yields in the two regions. We have attempted to propose the strategy to realize a Green Revolution in sub-Saharan Africa based on lessons learned from the comparative studies included in this special volume.

The African food crisis: lessons from the Asian Green Revolution

<title>Abstract</title> A comparative study between Asian agricultural development during the Green Revolution in food production and the current problematic agricultural situation in sub-Saharan Africa is presented. Case studies of eight African (viz. Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia) and seven Asian (Japan, Taiwan, Korea Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh) countries (focusing on the early part of the Green Revolution) are also presented. A causal and explanatory model of Asian green revolutions is presented, as well as a discussion on why this phenomenon occurred in Asia and not in Africa. This book will be of significant interest to researchers on agricultural economics, rural sociology and development studies.

This book is a very topical contribution, coming at a time when the world community is increasingly shifting its attention from the agricultural development of Asia to that of Africa. A rapid growth in food production in Asia, in the wake of the Green Revolution, has increased the overall food availability and reduced the incidence of hunger and famine that were of major concerns in Asia four to five decades ago. Agricultural growth in most parts of Africa is, however, still too slow and sporadic to address the food problems adequately and to prevent the resulting major human catastrophes that fill up television screens around the world all too frequently. Are there any lessons that can be drawn from the Asian success that may be applicable to addressing the food crisis in Africa? "If Asia can do it, why not Africa?" This is the theme of this edited volume consisting of 14 chapters.

PERFORMANCE OF A WIDE RANGE OF ASIAN VEGETABLES AT TWO LOCATIONS IN EAST TEXAS

The population of U.S. Asians will increase by 41% and reach 12 million by the year 2000. Chinese cabbage, Pak Choi, Daikon, and Bitter melon have moved out of the ethnic market and are now in mainstream outlets. This study targeted a diverse range of cool and warm-season crops. Besides those listed above, this study evaluated varieties of Asian greens, Chinese brocolli, Allium, edible soybeam, melon, squash, cucumber, edible Chrysanthemum, amaranth, winged bean, yard-long bean, and edible soybean. A randomized complete block design was utilized, with three replications of row length, varying from 10 to 33 feet, depending on species tested. Direct seedlings of cool-season crops in February and September, 1989 resulted in good market quality and yield of many varieties. Work in 1990 will focus on width of the market window, market information, and grower access to markets.
