Multiline study of the radial extent of SiO, CS, and SiS in asymptotic giant branch envelopes

Circumstellar envelopes around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars contain a rich diversity of molecules, whose spatial distribution is regulated by different chemical and physical processes. In the outer circumstellar layers, all molecules are efficiently destroyed due to interactions with interstellar ultraviolet photons. Here we aim to carry out a coherent and uniform characterization of the radial extent of three molecules (SiO, CS, and SiS) in envelopes around O- and C-rich AGB stars, and to study their dependence on mass-loss rate. To this end, we observed a reduced sample of seven M-type and seven C-type AGB envelopes in multiple lines of SiO, CS, and SiS with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. The selected sources cover a wide range of mass-loss rates, from ~10−7 M⊙ yr−1 to a few times 10−5 M⊙ yr−1, and the observed lines cover a wide range of upper-level energies, from 2 K to 130 K. We carried out excitation and radiative transfer calculations over a wide parameter space in order to characterize the abundance and radial extent of each molecule. A χ2 analysis indicates that the abundance is usually well constrained while the radial extent is in some cases more difficult to constrain. Our results indicate that the radial extent of the molecules considered here increases with increasing envelope density, in agreement with previous observational findings. At high envelope densities of Ṁ/υ∞ > 10−6 M⊙ yr−1 km−1 s, SiO, CS, and SiS show a similar radial extent, while at low envelope densities of Ṁ/υ∞ < 10−7 M⊙ yr−1 km−1 s, differences in radial extent appear among the three molecules, in agreement with theoretical expectations based on destruction due to photodissociation. At low envelope densities, we find a sequence of increasing radial extent, SiS → CS → SiO. We also find a tentative dependence of the radial extent on the chemical type (O- or C-rich) of the star for SiO and CS. Interferometric observations and further investigation of the photodissociation of SiO, CS, and SiS should provide clarification of the situation in regards to the relative photodissociation radii of SiO, CS, and SiS in AGB envelopes and their dependence on envelope density and C/O ratio.

Molecular line polarisation from the circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch stars

Context. Polarisation observations of masers in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars have revealed strong magnetic fields. However, masers probe only specific lines of sight through the CSE. Non-masing molecular line polarisation observations can more directly reveal the large-scale magnetic field morphology and hence probe the effect of the magnetic field on AGB mass loss and the shaping of the AGB wind. Aims. Observations and models of CSE molecular line polarisation can now be used to describe the magnetic field morphology and estimate its strength throughout the entire CSE. Methods. We used observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of molecular line polarisation in the envelope of two AGB stars: CW Leo and R Leo. We modelled the observations using the multi-dimensional polarised radiative transfer tool PORTAL. Results. We found linearly polarised emission, with maximum fractional polarisation on the order of a few percent, in several molecular lines towards both stars. Towards R Leo, we also found a high level of linear polarisation (up to ∼35%) for one of the SiO v = 1 maser transitions. We can explain the observed differences in polarisation structure between the different molecular lines by alignment of the molecules through a combination of the Goldreich-Kylafis effect and radiative alignment effects. We specifically show that the polarisation of CO traces the morphology of the magnetic field. Competition between the alignment mechanisms allowed us to describe the behaviour of the magnetic field strength as a function of the radius throughout the circumstellar envelope of CW Leo. The magnetic field strength derived using this method is inconsistent with the magnetic field strength derived using a structure-function analysis of the CO polarisation and the strength previously derived using CN Zeeman observations. In contrast with CW Leo, the magnetic field in the outer envelope of R Leo appears to be advected outwards by the stellar wind. Conclusions. The ALMA observations and our polarised radiative transfer models show the power of using multiple molecular species to trace the magnetic field behaviour throughout the circumstellar envelope. While the observations appear to confirm the existence of a large-scale magnetic field, further observations and modelling are needed to understand the apparent inconsistency of the magnetic field strength derived with different methods in the envelope of CW Leo.

Pinwheel Outflow Induced by Stellar Mass Loss in a Coplanar Triple System

We develop a physical framework for interpreting complex circumstellar patterns whorled around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars by investigating stable, coplanar triple systems using hydrodynamic and particle simulations. The introduction of a close tertiary body causes an additional periodic variation in the orbital velocity and trajectory of the AGB star. As a result, the circumstellar outflow builds a fine non-Archimedean spiral pattern superimposed upon the Archimedean spiral produced by the outer binary alone. This fine spiral can be approximated by off-centered circular rings that become tangent to each other at the location of the Archimedean spiral. The superimposed fine pattern fades out relatively quickly as a function of distance from the center of the system, in contrast to the dominant Archimedean spiral pattern, which presents a much slower fractional density decrease with radius. The different rates of radial decrease of the density contrast in the two superimposed patterns, coupled with their different time and spatial scales, lead to an apparent, but illusory radial change in the observed pattern interval, as has been reported, for example, in CW Leo. The function describing the detailed radial dependence of the expansion velocity is different in the two patterns, which may be used to distinguish them. The shape of the circumstellar whorled pattern is further explored as a function of the orbital eccentricity and the inner companion’s mass. Although this study is confined to stable, coplanar triple systems, the results are likely applicable to moderately noncoplanar systems and open interesting avenues for studying noncoplanar systems.

CO emission survey of asymptotic giant branch stars with ultraviolet excesses

Context. The transition from the spherically symmetric envelopes around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to the asymmetric morphologies observed in planetary nebulae is still not well understood, and the shaping mechanisms are a subject of debate. Even though binarity is widely accepted as a promising option, it is limited by the complication of identifying binary AGB stars observationally. Recently, the presence of ultraviolet excesses in AGB stars has been suggested as a potential indicator of binarity. Aims. Our main goals are to characterise the properties of the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around candidate AGB binary stars, specifically those selected based on their UV excess emission, and to compare these properties with those derived from previous CO-based studies of AGB stars. Methods. We observed the 12CO (J=1–0) and 12CO (J=2–1) millimetre-wavelength emission in a sample of 29 AGB binary candidates with the IRAM-30 m antenna. We measured the systemic velocities and the terminal expansion velocities from their line profiles. Population diagrams were used to interpret the results, enabling the estimation of excitation temperatures (Tex), mass-loss rates (Ṁ), and the characteristic sizes of the envelope layers where the CO millimetre emission originates (Rs). We explored different trends between the envelope parameters deduced, multiwavelength flux measurements, and other properties of our sample, and compared them with those previously derived from larger samples of AGB stars found in the literature. Results. We detected 12CO emission in 15 sources, of which 5 are first detections. We found relatively low expansion velocities (3 km s−1 ≲ Vexp ≲ 20 km s−1) in our sample. We derived the average excitation temperature and column density of the CO-emitting layers, which we used to estimate self-consistently the average mass-loss rate (10−8 M⊙ yr−1 ≲ Ṁ ≲ 10−5 M⊙ yr−1) and the CO pho-todissociation radius (5 × 1015 cm ≲ RCO ≲ 2 × 1017 cm) of our targets. We find a correlation between CO intensity and IRAS 60 µm fluxes, revealing a CO-to-IRAS 60 µm ratio lower than for AGB stars and closer to that found for pre-planetary nebulae (pPNe). An anti-correlation is observed between 12CO (and IRAS 60 µm) and the near-ultraviolet (NUV), but no such correlation is observed with the far-ultraviolet (FUV). It is also worth noting that there is no correlation between bolometric luminosity and NUV or FUV. Conclusions. For the first time we have studied the mass-loss properties of UV-excess AGB binary candidates and estimated their main CSE parameters. Our sample of uvAGB stars shows similarities with the broader category of AGB stars, except for a distinct CO-to-IRAS 60 µm trend suggesting enhanced CO photodissociation. Our findings, based on single-dish low-J CO line emission observations, support the dust-driven wind scenario and indicate that alternative mass-loss mechanisms are not necessary (in principle) to explain the ~200–2000 yr old mass-loss ejecta in uvAGBs. The different relationships between 12CO and IRAS 60 µm, with NUV and FUV are consistent with an intrinsic origin of NUV emission, but potential dominance of an extrinsic process (e.g. presence of a binary companion) in FUV emission.

On the optical properties of resonant drag instabilities: variability of asymptotic giant branch and R Coronae Borealis stars

ABSTRACT In dusty cool-star outflow or ejection events around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) or R Coronae Borealis or RCB-like stars, dust is accelerated by radiation from the star and coupled to the gas via collisional drag forces. It has recently been shown that such dust-gas mixtures are unstable to a super-class of instabilities called the resonant drag instabilities (RDIs), which promote dust clustering. We therefore consider idealized simulations of the RDIs operating on a spectrum of dust grain sizes subject to radiative acceleration (allowing for different grain optical properties), coupled to the gas with a realistic drag law, including or excluding the effects of magnetic fields and charged grains, and calculate for the first time how the RDIs could contribute to observed variability. We show that the RDIs naturally produce significant variations (spatially and temporally) ($\sim 10\!-\!20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ 1 σ-level) in the extinction, corresponding to $\sim 0.1\!-\!1\,$mag level in the stellar types above, on time-scales of order months to a year. The fluctuations are surprisingly robust to the assumed size of the source as they are dominated by large-scale modes, which also means their spatial structure could be resolved in some nearby systems. We also quantify how this produces variations in the line-of-sight grain size-distribution. All of these variations are similar to those observed, suggesting that the RDIs may play a key role driving observed spatial and temporal variability in dust extinction within dusty outflow/ejection events around cool stars. We further propose that the measured variations in grain sizes could directly be used to identify the presence of the RDIs in close by systems with observations.

Investigating dust properties in AGB wind-ISM interaction regions

Aims.In this paper, we aim to constrain the dust mass and grain sizes in the interaction regions between the stellar winds and the interstellar medium (ISM) around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. By describing the dust in these regions, we aim to shed light on the role of evolved low-mass stars in the origin of dust in galaxies.Methods.We use images in the far-infrared (FIR) at 70 and 160 µm to derive dust temperatures and dust masses in the wind-ISM interaction regions around a sample of carbon-rich and oxygen-rich AGB stars. The dust temperature and mass are determined in two ways: first, directly from the data using the ratio of the measured fluxes and assuming opacities for dust with a constant grain size of 0.1 µm, and then using three-dimensional dust-radiative transfer models spatially constrained by the observations. Each of the radiative transfer models contains one constant grain size, which is varied between 0.01 and 5.0 µm.Results.We find that the observed dust mass in the wind-ISM interaction regions is consistent with mass accumulated from the stellar winds. For the carbon-rich sources, adding the spatial constraints in the radiative transfer models results in preferentially larger grain sizes (≈2 µm). For the oxygen-rich sources, the spatial constraints result in overly high temperatures in the models, making it impossible to fit the observed FIR ratio irrespective of the grain size used, indicating a more complex interplay of grain properties and the stellar radiation field.Conclusions.Our results have implications for how likely it is for the grains to survive the transition into the ISM, and the properties of dust particles that later act as seeds for grain growth in the ISM. However, our results for the oxygen-rich sources show that the derivation of dust properties is not straight forward, requiring more complex modelling.

Dynamic atmospheres and winds of cool luminous giants

Context. The winds observed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are generally attributed to radiation pressure on dust formed in the extended dynamical atmospheres of these long-period variables. The composition of wind-driving grains is affected by a feedback between their optical properties and the resulting heating due to stellar radiation. Aims. We explore the gradual Fe enrichment of wind-driving silicate grains in M-type AGB stars to derive typical values for Fe/Mg and to test the effects on wind properties and synthetic spectra. Methods. We present new radiation-hydrodynamical DARWIN models that allow for the growth of silicate grains with a variable Fe/Mg ratio and predict mass-loss rates, wind velocities, and grain properties. Synthetic spectra and other observables are computed a posteriori with the COMA code. Results. The self-regulating feedback between grain composition and radiative heating, in combination with quickly falling densities in the stellar wind, leads to low values of Fe/Mg, typically a few percent. Nevertheless, the new models show distinct silicate features around 10 and 18 microns. Fe enrichment affects visual and near-IR photometry moderately, and the new DARWIN models agree well with observations in (J − K) versus (V − K) and Spitzer color–color diagrams. The enrichment of the silicate dust with Fe is a secondary process, taking place in the stellar wind on the surface of large Fe-free grains that have initiated the outflow. Therefore, the mass-loss rates are basically unaffected, while the wind velocities tend to be slightly higher than in corresponding models with Fe-free silicate dust. Conclusions. The gradual Fe enrichment of silicate grains in the inner wind region should produce signatures observable in mid-IR spectro-interferometrical measurements. Mass-loss rates derived from existing DARWIN models, based on Fe-free silicates, can be applied to stellar evolution models since the mass-loss rates are not significantly affected by the inclusion of Fe in the silicate grains.

Maser emission from the CO envelope of the asymptotic giant branch star W Hydrae

Context. Observation of CO emission around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is the primary method to determine gas mass-loss rates. While radiative transfer models have shown that molecular levels of CO can become mildly inverted, causing maser emission, CO maser emission has yet to be confirmed observationally. Aims. High-resolution observations of the CO emission around AGB stars now have the brightness temperature sensitivity to detect possible weak CO maser emission. Methods. We used high angular resolution observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to observe the small-scale structure of CO J = 3−2 emission around the oxygen-rich AGB star W Hya. Results. We find CO maser emission amplifying the stellar continuum with an optical depth τ ≈−0.55. The maser predominantly amplifies the limb of the star because CO J = 3−2 absorption from the extended stellar atmosphere is strongest towards the centre of the star. Conclusions. The CO maser velocity corresponds to a previously observed variable component of high-frequency H2O masers and with the OH maser that was identified as the amplified stellar image. This implies that the maser originates beyond the acceleration region and constrains the velocity profile since we find the population inversion primarily in the inner circumstellar envelope. We find that inversion can be explained by the radiation field at 4.6 μm and that the existence of CO maser emission is consistent with the estimated mass-loss rates for W Hya. However, the pumping mechanism requires a complex interplay between absorption and emission lines in the extended atmosphere. Excess from dust in the circumstellar envelope of W Hya is not sufficient to contribute significantly to the required radiation field at 4.6 μm. The interplay between molecular lines that cause the pumping can be constrained by future multi-level CO observations.

Explaining the winds of AGB stars: Recent progress

AbstractThe winds observed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are generally attributed to radiation pressure on dust, which is formed in the extended dynamical atmospheres of these pulsating, strongly convective stars. Current radiation-hydrodynamical models can explain many of the observed features, and they are on the brink of delivering a predictive theory of mass loss. This review summarizes recent results and ongoing work on winds of AGB stars, discussing critical ingredients of the driving mechanism, and first results of global 3D RHD star-and-wind-in-a-box simulations. With such models it becomes possible to follow the flow of matter, in full 3D geometry, all the way from the turbulent, pulsating interior of an AGB star, through its atmosphere and dust formation zone into the region where the wind is accelerated by radiation pressure on dust. Advanced instruments, which can resolve the stellar atmospheres, where the winds originate, provide essential data for testing the models.

The origin of s-process isotope heterogeneity in the solar protoplanetary disk

Rocky asteroids and planets display nucleosynthetic isotope variations that are attributed to the heterogeneous distribution of stardust from different stellar sources in the solar protoplanetary disk. Here we report new high precision palladium isotope data for six iron meteorite groups, which display smaller nucleosynthetic isotope variations than the more refractory neighbouring elements. Based on this observation we present a new model in which thermal destruction of interstellar medium dust results in an enrichment of s-process dominated stardust in regions closer to the Sun. We propose that stardust is depleted in volatile elements due to incomplete condensation of these elements into dust around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. This led to the smaller nucleosynthetic variations for Pd reported here and the lack of such variations for more volatile elements. The smaller magnitude variations measured in heavier refractory elements suggest that material from high-metallicity AGB stars dominated stardust in the Solar System. These stars produce less heavy s-process elements compared to the bulk Solar System composition.

Sounding-rocket microgravity experiments on alumina dust

Alumina (Al2O3) is believed to be the first major condensate to form in the gas outflow from oxygen-rich evolved stars because of the refractoriness and that α-Al2O3 (corundum, most stable polymorph) is a potential origin of a 13 μm feature that appears close to stars. However, no one has directly reproduced the 13 μm feature experimentally, and it has remained as a noteworthy unidentified infrared band. Here, we report nucleation experiments on Al2O3 nanoparticles monitored by a specially designed infrared spectrometer in the microgravity environment of a sounding rocket. The conditions approximate to those around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The measured spectra of the nucleated Al2O3 show a sharp feature at a wavelength of 13.55 μm and comparable in width to that observed near oxygen-rich AGB stars. Our finding that α-Al2O3 nucleates under certain condition provides a solid basis to elaborate condensation models of dust around oxygen-rich evolved stars.

ALMA’s Acute View of pPNe: Through the Magnifying Glass... and What We Found There

We present recent Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-based studies of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and pre-Planetary Nebulae (pPNe). In only a few years of operation, ALMA is revolutionising the field of AGB-to-PN research by providing unprecedentedly detailed information on the complex nebular architecture (at large but also on small scales down to a few ∼10 AU from the centre), dynamics and chemistry of the outflows/envelopes of low-to-intermediate mass stars in their late stages of the evolution. Here, we focus on continuum and molecular line mapping studies with high angular resolution and sensitivity of some objects that are key to understanding the complex PN-shaping process. In particular, we offer (i) a brief summary of ALMA observations of rotating disks in post-AGB objects and (ii) report on ALMA observations of OH 231.8+4.2 providing the most detailed and accurate description of the global nebular structure and kinematics of this iconic object to date.

Dust Structure Around Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

AbstractThis paper presents mass, temperature profile, and the variation of Planck’s function in different regions around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The physics of the interstellar medium (ISM) is extremely complex because the medium is very inhomogeneous and is made of regions with fairly diverse physical conditions. We studied the dust environment such as flux, temperature, mass, and inclination angle of the cavity structure around C-rich asymptotic giant branch stars in 60 μm and 100 μm wavelengths band using Infrared Astronomical Survey. We observed the data of AGB stars named IRAS 01142+6306 and IRAS 04369+4501. Flexible image transport system image was downloaded from Sky View Observatory; we obtained the surrounding flux density using software Aladin v2.5. The average dust color temperature and mass are found to be 25.08 K, 23.20 K and 4.73 × ;1026 kg (0.00024 M⊙), 2.58 × 1028 kg (0.013 M⊙), respectively. The dust color temperature ranges from 18.76 K ± 3.16 K to 33.21K ± K and 22.84 K ± 0.18 K to 24.48 K ± 0.63 K. The isolated cavity like structure around the AGB stars has an extension of 45.67 pc × 17.02 pc and 42.25 pc × 17.76 pc, respectively. The core region is found to be edge-on having an inclination angle of 79.46° and 73.99°, respectively.

The circumstellar envelope around the S-type AGB star W Aql. Effects of an eccentric binary orbit.

Recent observations at subarcsecond resolution, now possible also at submillimeter wavelengths, have shown intricate circumstellar structures around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, mostly attributed to binary interaction. The results presented here are part of a larger project aimed at investigating the effects of a binary companion on the morphology of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of AGB stars. AGB stars are characterized by intense stellar winds that build CSEs around the stars. Here, the CO(J = 3→2) emission from the CSE of the binary S-type AGB star W Aql has been observed at subarcsecond resolution using ALMA. The aim of this paper is to investigate the wind properties of the AGB star and to analyse how the known companion has shaped the CSE. The average mass-loss rate during the creation of the detected CSE is estimated through modelling, using the ALMA brightness distribution and previously published single-dish measurements as observational constraints. The ALMA observations are presented and compared to the results from a 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) binary interaction model with the same properties as the W Aql system and with two different orbital eccentricities. Three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling is performed and the response of the interferometer is modelled and discussed. The estimated average mass-loss rate of W Aql is Ṁ = 3.0×10-6 M⊙ yr-1 and agrees with previous results based on single-dish CO line emission observations. The size of the emitting region is consistent with photodissociation models. The inner 10″ of the CSE is asymmetric with arc-like structures at separations of 2-3″ scattered across the denser sections. Further out, weaker spiral structures at greater separations are found, but this is at the limit of the sensitivity and field of view of the ALMA observations. The CO(J = 3→2) emission is dominated by a smooth component overlayed with two weak arc patterns with different separations. The larger pattern is predicted by the binary interaction model with separations of ~10″ and therefore likely due to the known companion. It is consistent with a binary orbit with low eccentricity. The smaller separation pattern is asymmetric and coincides with the dust distribution, but the separation timescale (200 yrs) is not consistent with any known process of the system. The separation of the known companions of the system is large enough to not have a very strong effect on the circumstellar morphology. The density contrast across the envelope of a binary with an even larger separation will not be easily detectable, even with ALMA, unless the orbit is strongly asymmetric or the AGB star has a much larger mass-loss rate.

Dust formation and mass loss around intermediate-mass AGB stars with initial metallicityZini≤ 10−4in the early Universe – I. Effect of surface opacity on stellar evolution and the dust-driven wind

Dust formation and resulting mass loss around Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars with initial metallicity in the range of $0 \leq Z_{\rm ini} \leq 10^{-4}$ and initial mass $2\leq M_{\rm ini}/M_{\odot} \leq 5$ are explored by the hydrodynamical calculations of dust-driven wind (DDW) along the AGB evolutionary tracks. We employ the MESA code to simulate the evolution of stars, assuming an empirical mass-loss rate in the post-main sequence phase, and considering the three types of low-temperature opacities (scaled-solar, CO-enhanced, and CNO-enhanced opacities) to elucidate the effect on the stellar evolution and the DDW. We find that the treatment of low-temperature opacity strongly affects the dust formation and resulting DDW; in the carbon-rich AGB phase, the maximum $\dot{M}$ of $M_{\rm ini} \geq$ 3 $M_{\odot}$ star with the CO-enhanced opacity is at least one order of magnitude smaller than that with the CNO-enhanced opacity. A wide range of stellar parameters being covered, a necessary condition for driving efficient DDW with $\dot{M} \ge 10^{-6}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ is expressed as the effective temperature $T_{\rm eff} \lesssim 3850$ K and $\log(\delta_{\rm C}L/\kappa_{\rm R} M) \gtrsim 10.43\log T_{\rm eff}-32.33 $ with the carbon excess $\delta_{\rm C}$ defined as $\epsilon_{\rm C} - \epsilon_{\rm O}$ and the Rosseland mean opacity $\kappa_{\rm R}$ in units of cm$^2$g$^{-1}$ in the surface layer, and the stellar mass (luminosity) $M$ $(L)$ in solar units. The derived fitting formulae of gas and dust mass-loss rates in terms of input stellar parameters could be useful for investigating the dust yield from AGB stars in the early Universe being consistent with the stellar evolution calculations.

Searching for X-ray emission from AGB stars

Magnetic fields have been measured around Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars of all chemical types using maser polarization observations. If present, a large-scale magnetic field would lead to X-ray emission, which should be observable using current X-ray observatories. The aim of this work is to search the archival data for AGB stars that are intrinsic X-ray emitters. We have searched the ROSAT, CXO, and XMM archives for serendipitous X-ray observations of a sample of ~500 AGB stars. We specifically searched for the AGB stars detected with GALEX. The data is calibrated, analyzed and the X-ray luminosities and temperatures are estimated as functions of the circumstellar absorption. We identify 13 AGB stars as having either serendipitous or targeted observations in the X-ray data archives, however for a majority of the sources the detailed analysis show that the detections are questionable. Two new sources are detected by ROSAT: T Dra and R UMa. The spectral analysis suggests that the emission associated with these sources could be due to coronal activity or interaction across a binary system. Further observations of the detected sources are necessary to clearly determine the origin of the X-ray emission. Moreover, additional objects should be subject to targeted X-ray observations in order to achieve better constraints for the magnetic fields around AGB stars.

On the Formation of Multiple Arcs around Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

Two types of models for the formation of semiperiodic concentric multiple arcs (M-arcs) around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and in planetary nebulae are compared against observations. Models that attribute the M-arcs to processes in an extended wind acceleration zone around AGB stars result in an optically thick acceleration zone, which reduces the acceleration efficiency in outer parts of the extended acceleration zone. This makes such models an unlikely explanation for the formation of M-arcs. Models which attribute the M-arcs to semiperiodic variation in one or more stellar properties are most compatible with observations. The only stellar variation models on timescales of ~50-1500 yr that have been suggested are based on an assumed solar-like magnetic cycle. Although ad hoc, the magnetic cycle assumption fits naturally into the increasingly popular view that magnetic activity plays a role in shaping the wind from upper AGB stars.

Modeling the Effects of Dust on Galactic Spectral Energy Distributions from the Ultraviolet to the Millimeter Band

We present models of photometric evolution of galaxies in which the effects of a dusty interstellar medium have been included with particular care. A chemical evolution code follows the star formation rate, the gas fraction, and the metallicity, basic ingredients for the stellar population synthesis. The latter is performed with a grid of integrated spectra of simple stellar populations (SSP) of different ages and metallicities, in which the effects of dusty envelopes around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are included. The residual fraction of gas in the galaxy is divided into two phases: the star-forming molecular clouds and the diffuse medium. The relative amount is a model parameter. The molecular gas is subdivided into clouds of given mass and radius: it is supposed that each SSP is born within the cloud and progressively escapes it. The emitted spectrum of the star-forming molecular clouds is computed with a radiative transfer code. The diffuse dust emission (cirrus) is derived by describing the galaxy as an axially symmetric system, in which the local dust emissivity is consistently calculated as a function of the local field intensity due to the stellar component. Effects of very small grains, subject to temperature fluctuations, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are included. The model is compared and calibrated with available data of normal and starburst galaxies in the local universe, in particular new broadband and spectroscopic Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) observations. It will be a powerful tool to investigate the star formation, the initial mass function (IMF), supernova rate (SNR) in nearby starbursts and normal galaxies, as well as to predict the evolution of luminosity functions of different types of galaxies at wavelengths covering four decades.

Presolar corundum and spinel in ordinary chondrites: origins from AGB stars and a supernova.

On the basis of anomalous isotopic compositions of oxygen and magnesium, 14 oxide grains from two primitive meteorites (Bishunpur and Semarkona) have been identified as circumstellar condensates. One corundum grain has a high 18O/16O ratio and isotopic compositions of magnesium, calcium, and titanium that are compatible with a formation in ejecta of a type II supernova that was about 15 times the mass of the sun. The other grains have oxygen, magnesium, and titanium compositions that are consistent with a formation around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with a range of mass and initial composition. The large range of aluminum/magnesium in circumstellar corundum and spinel is considered to reflect various stages of back-reaction between condensed corundum and gaseous magnesium in cooling stellar ejecta.
