This article analyzes the evaluation of static archive preservation at the Library and Archives Office of Aceh Besar Regency based on Anri Head Regulation Number 23 of 2011. This research aims to find out two aspects. First, to find out the process of implementing static archive preservation at DPKA Aceh Besar Regency. Second, to find out the obstacles in the implementation of static archive preservation. In carrying out the research, the research method used is qualitative, with the type of field research. The results of the analysis show two findings. First, the process of implementing static archive preservation consists of preventive and curative preservation. Preventive preservation includes the provision of archive storage space, archive handling, pest control, disaster planning. Curative preservation is a direct action to deal with damaged archives. The evaluation process of static archive preservation is carried out with three aspects, namely identifying deficiencies in the preservation process, monitoring archives, recording complete archive data. Second, there are three obstacles to the implementation of static archive preservation, namely limited archive storage space (archive depot), limited labor or human resources (HR), and limited budget. It can be concluded that the process of implementing static archive preservation evaluation at DPKA Aceh Besar Regency is in accordance with ANRI Regulation Number 23 of 2011, although there are still obstacles regarding the lack of storage space, budget and human resources. The results of this study can deepen understanding of the concepts and principles of static archive preservation in accordance with applicable regulations and contribute to archival studies. In addition, there is a need to improve archive management in government agencies and optimize the use of archives for the public.

Broadcast archives have started to use Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) to generate transcripts of their audio-visual collections to open up the latter to media professionals and media researchers. In this methodological article, we study the ASR files of Dutch archived television news on the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. By unpacking ASR’s specificities and exploring methodologies, we examine the repackaging of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on Dutch television. Building upon Loukissas’ concept of ‘local data’, combined with insights from archival studies, digital history, and television studies, we argue that ASR ought to be considered, not just as speech-to-text, but also as speech-to-local data in which the production contexts of broadcast archives and of television newsrooms need to be taken into account. ASR appears to be a specific kind of repackaging in which the broadcasts are segmented, programmed, and archived, and subsequently used to generate a time code and speech transcript, including errors, gaps, schemata, and traces of rituals that - together - are shaping and reshaping the historical record, in this case of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The relevance. Publication activity shapes a unified information space by linking science, education, and the professional environment. Verifying its relevance and significance in national specialized journals requires statistical analysis. The purpose of the research. The study examines trends in educational publication activity in library and information sciences within Ukraine’s specialized academic journals. The methodology. A cross-sectional analysis of educational publications in Ukraine’s peer-reviewed journals (2018–2023) was conducted. A selective approach, combined with statistical methods and content analysis, identified trends in publication activity and refined key terminology. The results. The study analyzed publication trends in library and information sciences by examining temporal distribution, thematic priorities, individual activity levels, research collaboration, and institutional contributions. The scientific novelty. The research establishes the current state of publication activity in education, focusing on information, library, and archival studies. The practical significance. Quantitative assessment of publication activity supports scientific advancements and informs editorial policies in academic journals. The conclusion. The features of the temporality of publication activity in educational activities in library and information sciences were established, the thematic priority of publication was studied, and the levels of publication activity of personalities were identified. A clear trend of increasing publication activity on educational topics, particularly regarding the organization of the learning process in the field of “Information, Library, and Archival Affairs”, has been identified. The generalized indicator of the priority of publication activity in the entire sample of scientific professional journals for the specified years indicates a rather low share of articles on educational topics against the background of the entire general set of published articles. Analysis of the publication activity of personalities in professional journals on library science and information sciences indicates a small number of authors for whom educational topics are a significant direction of their scientific profile.

Abstract This study was an investigation of the relationships between Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, editor of the al-Jawaib (Circulating News), an Arabic newspaper published in İstanbul, his son Selim Faris, and the Ottoman authorities, utilising only Ottoman archival documents, in particular, the Presidential Ottoman Archives (BOA) between 1859 and 1887. Since this paper is the initial one of many, the complete biography of Ahmad Faris and the content analysis of al-Jawaib were not discussed, but only the relevant issues within the aforementioned period. And it also explored the partial life of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq. Although the editor and his newspaper are well-known, certain aspects of the relationship between Ahmad Faris and the Ottoman authorities in the Ottoman archival document have yet to be elaborated on. This brief study examined the correspondences between Ahmad Faris and the Ottoman authorities descriptively without delving into details. Since these archival documents were generally intact, it seemed to be worth analysing in this article. Before studying the journalistic and intellectual contents and contexts of the al-Jawaib, it would be valuable to see the development of the relationship between Ahmad Faris and the Ottoman authorities. Several fundamental questions come to mind, and it is believed that the answers to these would be helpful in comprehending other aspects in the later stages of the al-Jawaib publication of almost 25 years. This research-based paper applied historical archival study with an interpretative approach.

Background. Childhood abuse and other developmentally unfavorable, interpersonal traumas may place individuals at risk of experiencing not only Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) but also impairments in emotional, cognitive, physiological, and relational self-regulation, collectively known as “disorders of extreme stress not otherwise specified” (DESNOS). While much literature exists on PTSD as the psychological response to violence, there is a notable lack of research connecting the symptoms manifested across childhood and adulthood to pre/perinatal or primal experiences. The purpose of this study is to explore possible links between the maternal environment (conception, gestation, and birth) and the quality of life, health trends, disease predisposition, and behavioral patterns related to PTSD/DESNOS in later life by analyzing psychotherapy notes of clients' narratives collected during psychotherapy sessions. Methods: A qualitative archival study was conducted based on the first author’s private archives, which consist of psychotherapist session notes from 2000 to 2018. The narratives of 42 participants were evaluated, and deductive content analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Framework-based analysis and clients' narratives support the notion of a connection between pre/perinatal trauma and PTSD/DESNOS symptoms. Conclusion: Our findings describe the deep interconnection between early life events and adult well-being, challenging conventional notions of trauma etiology. These insights have far-reaching implications for therapeutic interventions, policy development, and our understanding of human experience.

Introduction. The archival turn, emerging in the 1990s, signifies a shift in how scholars conceptualise and engage with archives across disciplines. This study examines the theoretical origins, ontological, epistemological and methodological dimensions of the archival turn and its implications for archival theory and practice. Method. This research employs a theoretical and conceptual analysis, synthesising literature from history, philosophy, cultural studies and archival science. It traces key intellectual influences, including Ranke’s historiographical methods, Foucault’s discourse theory and Derrida’s concept of archive fever, to contextualise the archival turn’s evolution. Analysis. The archival turn is analysed through its ontological, epistemological and methodological dimensions. These dimensions highlight how the turn redefines the concept of archives, challenges traditional assumptions and encourages more critical approaches to archival materials. Results. The archival turn has led to ontological shifts, expanding the definition of archives beyond institutional repositories. Epistemologically, it has reframed archives as sites of knowledge production and power rather than neutral collections. Methodologically, it has encouraged critical archival engagement, rethinking provenance and addressing archival silences. However, scholars debate whether the archival turn has substantively transformed historiographical methodologies or if it remains primarily a theoretical abstraction disconnected from archival practice. Conclusions. The archival turn has enriched interdisciplinary scholarship and challenged traditional notions of archives. However, tensions persist between theoretical conceptualisations in the humanities and the practical concerns of archival studies. While it has reshaped scholarly perspectives on archives, its impact on archival methodologies and professional practice remains a subject of ongoing debate.

Fashion has consistently served as a powerful medium for self-expression, identity formation, and social commentary. This research delves into the intricate relationship between fashion and feminism, investigating how clothing has been both a reflection of feminist ideologies and a catalyst for social change. The study traces feminist movements across history, showing how fashion- from suffragette symbolism to 70’s unisex styles to digital-age activism -has expressed and shaped gender politics. The research focuses on the symbolic, practical, and performative dimensions of fashion in feminist movements, exploring how clothing challenges societal norms, asserts individual and collective agency, and fosters solidarity within and across communities. It critically examines the duality of fashion as both a tool for empowerment and a site of potential compromise, where commercialism and patriarchal influences may dilute feminist intentions. By employing a mix method approach—including quantitative and qualitative interviews with activists and designers, content analysis of media representations, and archival studies of feminist artifacts, Results show that fashion plays a significant role in self-expression and it helps individuals express their empowerment and identity. However, concerns for commercialization dilutes feminist messages increasing its susceptibility to commodification. Other influencing factors include social, economic, cultural and other social factors. The study contributes valuable insights to the discourse on fashion and feminism and underscores the need for raising awareness how market forces can exploit feminist ideals that might help individuals make informed choices and push for ethical and purpose-driven fashion.

“This little thing of ours”—beautifully ornamented tortoise shell containers filled with fragrant powdered herbs and plants—comprises an important part of Ju|’hoansi cultural practice in contemporary Omaheke, Namibia. Used for various purposes associated with potency and protection, the !’hurasi can be found back in time and throughout space, in the Kalahari ethnographies, ethnographic artifact collections, myths, narratives, and rock art, but it has seldom received any scholarly attention. In this article, we aim to document how aspects of a distinct San material culture are still made, used, and engaged with in the western Kalahari today, in ways that would, despite the popular belief in a general loss of traditions and ancestral knowledge in the area, be recognizable and meaningful for members of the ancestral communities a hundred years ago. Both ethnographic sources and present-day documentation strongly suggest, we argue, that the !’hurasi represents a continuation in practice, linking the Omaheke Ju|’hoansi with important San ontological concepts, and that they have played an important role in the preservation, resilience, and development of modern Ju|’hoan culture. In a first-of-its-kind study of San tortoise shell containers, the research data that form the empirical ground of our argument is gathered from ethnographic field work among Ju|’hoansi communities in Omaheke in 2022, as well as through archival studies in the ethnographic artifact collection of the Museum Africa in Johannesburg.

PurposeA high-profile career debut refers to one’s first prominent and publicly visible appearance in their career, characterized by varying levels of performance across individuals. Despite its significance, particularly in professions that attract widespread public attention, there is little empirical evidence on its impact on career trajectories. Adopting the path dependency perspective, this study explores the relationship between high-profile career debut performance and objective career success.Design/methodology/approachAn archival study was conducted on male professional tennis players who once competed in Grand Slam tournaments (N = 327) during a specific time period.FindingsThe results reveal a “high-profile career debut effect,” indicating that performance during a high-profile career debut is positively associated with objective career success. This effect is particularly pronounced for male players who debuted at a younger age. Additionally, a supplementary archival study of scholars affiliated with top business schools further corroborates the main findings.Practical implicationsPractitioners, especially those in publicly visible and well-documented careers, are advised to excel at key career landmarks. This is especially important for those who achieve such milestones at a young age.Originality/valueThis study pioneers the exploration of a high-profile career debut as a critical career landmark, identifying the path dependency effect of performance during such debuts on future objective career success and delineating boundary conditions for specific populations.

This essay considers the impact of censorship on the work of a range of Soviet song composers. Arguing that song has been relatively little studied in comparison to the supposedly “major” genres of Soviet music (opera, symphony, etc.), it speculates that song may have been less caught up in egregious instances of censorship precisely because its status as a “minor” form protected it from obvious scandal. It also argues that because most composers turned to printed sources when it came to selecting the poetic texts they would set to music, this prior process of official approval also lent song a degree of protection. However, the ubiquity of censorship within the Soviet cultural system meant that song was in no way immune from its influence, and the article details instances of where songs were deemed problematic, as well as noting instances of where composers may have internalised practices of self-censorship that were widespread within Soviet culture. Finally, it notes that until detailed archival studies of the operation of the entire system of Soviet music-making are available, the field remains beset by instances of mythology and misrepresentation.

The work readiness of graduates of the archival study program is an important concern in responding to the challenges of an increasingly competitive world of work. Students' readiness to enter the workforce must be prepared from the educational stage. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing archival students' readiness for the professional world. This study uses an associative quantitative research design, and applies a survey method with a Likert scale questionnaire in data collection. The sample was determined using a simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicate that archival education, internship experience, and work motivation play a role in students' readiness to work in the archival field. Work motivation has a significant impact on job readiness, while archival education not only significantly affects job readiness but also influences work motivation. In contrast, internship experience does not have a direct significant effect on job readiness but significantly contributes to increasing work motivation in the archival field.

Price negotiation is often a zero-sum interaction where one party's gain is another's loss. In such contexts, a buyer's willingness to negotiate can depend on the perceived justifiability of negotiation. This research examines how political ideology shapes these perceptions. Two archival studies (N = 56,615) and four preregistered studies (N = 3,157) show that conservative buyers are more likely to negotiate prices for houses and used cars. Conservatives also hold stronger beliefs that buyers should negotiate prices regardless of the seller's identity-be it a professional dealer, an ordinary seller, a stranger, or a friend. This heightened propensity to justify price negotiation is rooted in conservatives' endorsement of free-market ideology, which motivates and even moralizes the pursuit of economic self-interest in marketplace interactions. These findings offer a nuanced account of interactions in the marketplace, demonstrating that marketplace behaviors are influenced not only by economic considerations but also by ideological beliefs.

The present study aimed to investigate the peculiarities of the evolution of Orthodox religious art in South Albania in the 16th-19th centuries. The basis for the analysis was the iconographic and technological aspects of the exhibits from the collection of the Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë. The results of the study identified four main stages in the development of local Orthodox art – from Onufry’s workshop to the work of the Chetiri family. The study determined that walnut wood was used in 63% of iconographic works, and two-layer plaster with the addition of organic fibres served as the basis for the works. The study of temple paintings demonstrated the transformation of Byzantine canons, which were supplemented by regional elements, both in the modelling of forms and in decorative decoration. The study of monastery archives made it possible to trace the structured system of training painters, which involved the gradual mastery of techniques and the heredity of skills. The study of the architectural characteristics of the churches revealed a close relationship between the building forms and the concept of paintings. The active use of local building materials and the introduction of technical solutions for the preservation of wall paintings were identified. The study identified the main stages of the development of Orthodox art in the region, revealed technological and artistic features, and established the mechanisms of interaction between different artistic traditions in the formation of the local school of church painting.

Often culture and identity are expressed through architecture. In fact, architecture as tangible material culture, represents and communicates the cultural themes of a community. Mbari houses that have existed in Nigeria before the twentieth century comprises sculptures and architectural components relevant to understand certain aspects of cultural identity. In this context, this study examines the historic Mbari houses in the Imo state of Nigeria and how their architecture expresses culture. The research employed a mixed method approach. The qualitative and quantitative techniques of data collection involved archival research and case studies. Archival data such as literature, photographs and records were obtained from the Enugu and Ibadan National Archives in Nigeria. Case study involved observations, and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders, along with storytelling through unstructured interviews with elders within the research community. An in-depth case study of an existing Mbari house at Umunakara - Imerienwe, Ngor-Okpala local government area in Imo State, Nigeria, was carried out through a visual and measured survey involving sketches. Since Mbari houses are largely extinct, typical and critical sampling criteria were adopted, based on availability of a possibly unimpaired archetypal model within any community in the ‘Mbari-building’ region. A chain-referral technique for snowball sampling was used in locating the community. The only existing and suitable model found in the Umunakara community was chosen as the Case Study. Logical argumentation was applied as an analytical strategy by identifying and examining the architectural components, while utilizing mathematical-cultural techniques to explain relationships between culture and the Mbari house. The results revealed that the central chamber of a Mbari house, is an architectural depiction of cultural relevance in the community. The basic geometric forms used as components and motifs of the central chamber express cultural meanings unique to the ‘mbari-building’ communities. The study further illustrates how elements of culture and identity, are structurally represented in a Mbari house.

This article examines the transformation of the meaning of the Quran in the context of death rites and death commemorations in Javanese society, especially in Central Java and Yogyakarta, during the period 2000–2023. This research approach is qualitative by utilizing ethnographic data, archival studies, ritual documentation, and in-depth interviews with ritual practitioners. The use of the Quran, which was originally a sacred Islamic text with normative content, has undergone a transformation of meaning when adapted into traditional Javanese rites. The process of cultural acculturation that occurred illustrates the dynamics between ancestral traditions and Islamic values, which provide space for the reinterpretation of religious symbols by local communities (Anderson, 2003; Suryadi, 2011). The historical analysis method and the theory of cultural transformation proposed by Clifford Geertz are used to explain the evolution of the use of the sacred text and highlight the role of ritual as a medium for negotiating meaning between cultures. The results of the study show that the insertion of Quranic verses into Javanese mantras not only functions as a sacred element, but also as a tool for social legitimacy and cultural identity of the Javanese people. This finding opens up opportunities for further study on the integrative role of ritual in shaping religious and cultural identity in Indonesia.

Of the 330 million residents of the United States, over 40 million were born abroad. Such individuals are routinely referred to using labels such as “alien,” “foreigner,” and “noncitizen.” In this multimethod project relying on data from 5437 U.S. citizens in experimental studies and 193,649 U.S. citizens in archival studies, we examine implicit (automatic) evaluations of non-Americans in the United States, their effects on impression formation, and their ecological correlates in the form of real-life outcomes. In Studies 1A–1C, the labels “alien,” “foreigner,” and “noncitizen” were found to be highly and similarly implicitly negative. In Studies 2A–2D, applying these labels to specific individuals created immediate implicit negativity toward them, irrespective of their gender or race. Finally, pro-American/anti-foreigner implicit evaluations predicted anti-immigrant policy positions at the level of individuals (Study 3A), and a conceptually and statistically related implicit White–American/Asian–foreign implicit stereotype predicted anti-immigrant voting patterns in 18 relevant ballot initiatives at the level of U.S. counties (Study 3B). Across studies, implicit anti-foreigner bias generalized across participant demographics but was somewhat stronger among men and political conservatives. Together, this work highlights the cognitive underpinnings and real-world correlates of robust and pervasive anti-foreigner biases in the United States.
