Archaeological Survey in the Arizona Papaguería

Archaeological survey and test excavation on the Sells Papago Indian Reservation, Arizona, provide new information indicating that specialized techniques of data recovery and analysis are necessary for this desert area. The survey of road paving projects recorded information which supports statements made by Haury (1950) about the type and distribution of archaeological remains in the Papagueria. Haury's observations, and the previously undescribed archaeological patterns resulting from this survey both confirm the need for use of analytical and interpretational procedures which do not rely upon the presence of painted ceramics and architectural remains.

The Iroquois: Archaeological patterning on the tribal level

Abstract This study attempts to infer aspects of early seventeenth‐century Iroquois political organization from archaeological information, especially the existence of the League of the Iroquois. Ceramic patterning within and between Iroquois village sites was considered. The existence of the League of the Iroquois was not reflected ceramically. The relevance of the results to questions concerning warfare, trade and the emergence of a new tribe were then considered.
