Research Progress of Single-Photon Emitters Based on Two-Dimensional Materials

From quantum communications to quantum computing, single-photon emitters (SPEs) are essential components of numerous quantum technologies. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have especially been found to be highly attractive for the research into nanoscale light–matter interactions. In particular, localized photonic states at their surfaces have attracted great attention due to their enormous potential applications in quantum optics. Recently, SPEs have been achieved in various 2D materials, while the challenges still remain. This paper reviews the recent research progress on these SPEs based on various 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and twisted-angle 2D materials. Additionally, we summarized the strategies to create, position, enhance, and tune the emission wavelength of these emitters by introducing external fields into these 2D system. For example, pronounced enhancement of the SPEs’ properties can be achieved by coupling with external fields, such as the plasmonic field, and by locating in optical microcavities. Finally, this paper also discusses current challenges and offers perspectives that could further stimulate scientific research in this field. These emitters, due to their unique physical properties and integration potential, are highly appealing for applications in quantum information and communication, as well as other physical and technological fields.

Coherent Microwave, Optical, and Mechanical Quantum Control of Spin Qubits in Diamond

AbstractDiamond has emerged as a highly promising platform for quantum network applications. Color centers in diamond fulfill the fundamental requirements for quantum nodes: they constitute optically accessible quantum systems with long‐lived spin qubits. Furthermore, they provide access to a quantum register of electronic and nuclear spin qubits and they mediate entanglement between spins and photons. All these operations require coherent control of the color center's spin state. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state‐of‐the‐art, challenges, and prospects of such schemes, including high‐fidelity initialization, coherent manipulation, and readout of spin states. Established microwave and optical control techniques are reviewed, and moreover, emerging methods such as cavity‐mediated spin–photon interactions and mechanical control based on spin–phonon interactions are summarized. For different types of color centers, namely, nitrogen–vacancy and group‐IV color centers, distinct challenges persist that are subject of ongoing research. Beyond fundamental coherent spin qubit control techniques, advanced demonstrations in quantum network applications are outlined, for example, the integration of individual color centers for accessing (nuclear) multiqubit registers. Finally, the role of diamond spin qubits in the realization of future quantum information applications is described.

Optical control and coherent coupling of spin diffusive modes in thermal gases

Quantum science and technology devices exploiting collective spins in thermal gases are extremely appealing due to their simplicity and robustness. This comes at the cost of dealing with the random thermal motion of the atoms which is usually an uncontrolled source of decoherence and noise. There are however conditions, for example, when diffusing in a buffer gas, where thermal atoms can occupy a discrete set of stable spatial modes. Diffusive modes can be extended or localized, have different magnetic properties depending on boundary conditions, and can react differently to external perturbations. Here, we selectively excite, manipulate, and interrogate the longest-lived of these modes by using laser light. In particular, we identify the conditions for the generation of modes that are exceptionally resilient to detrimental effects such as light induced frequency shifts and power-broadening, which are often the dominant sources of systematic errors in atomic magnetometers and comagnetometers. Moreover, we show that the presence of spatial inhomogeneities in the pump introduces a coupling that leads to a coherent exchange of excitation between the two longest-lived modes. Our results demonstrate that systematic engineering of the multi-mode nature of diffusive gases has great potential for improving the performance of quantum sensors based on alkali-metal thermal vapors, and opens new perspectives for quantum information applications. Limitations in design and applications of ultra-small mode volume photonic crystals

Ultra-small mode volume nanophotonic crystal cavities have been proposed as powerful tools for increasing coupling rates in cavity quantum electrodynamics systems. However, their adoption in quantum information applications remains elusive. In this work, we investigate possible reasons why, and analyze the impact of different low mode volume resonator design choices on their utility in quantum optics experiments. We analyze band structure features and loss rates of low mode volume bowtie cavities in diamond and demonstrate independent design control over cavity-emitter coupling strength and loss rates. Further, using silicon vacancy centers in diamond as exemplary emitters, we investigate the influence of placement imprecision. We find that the benefit on photon collection efficiency and indistinguishability is limited, while the fabrication complexity of ultra-small cavity designs increases substantially compared to conventional photonic crystals. We conclude that ultra-small mode volume designs are primarily of interest for dispersive spin-photon interactions, which are of great interest for future quantum networks.

Single-Photon Emission from Point Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Induced by Plasma Treatment.

Solid-state quantum emitters are gaining significant attention for many quantum information applications. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is an emerging host material for generating bright, stable, and tunable single-photon emission with narrow line widths at room temperature. In this work, we present a facile and efficient approach to generate high-density single-photon emitters (SPEs) in mechanically exfoliated h-BN through H- or Ar-plasma treatment followed by high-temperature annealing in air. It is notable that the postannealing is essential to suppress the fluorescence background in photoluminescence spectra and enhance emitter stability. These quantum emitters exhibit excellent optical properties, including high purity, brightness, stability, polarization degree, monochromaticity, and saturation intensity. The effects of process parameters on the quality of quantum emitters were systematic investigated. We find that there exists an optimal plasma power and h-BN thickness to achieve a high SPE density. This work offers a practical avenue for generating SPEs in h-BN and holds promise for future research and applications in quantum photonics.

Method to deterministically generate large-amplitude optical cat states

Cat states, as an important resource in the study of macroscopic quantum superposition and quantum information applications, have garnered widespread attention. To date, preparing large-sized optical cat states has remained challenging. We demonstrate that, by utilizing interaction-free measurement and the quantum Zeno effect, even a fragile quantum microscopic system can deterministically control and become entangled with strong light fields, thereby generating large-amplitude optical cat states. During the entire preparation process, our method ensures that the microscopic system functions within a weak field environment, so that its quantum property can be protected. Furthermore, we show that the preparation of cat states is possible even when the quantum microsystem suffers from significant photon loss, provided that optical losses from classical devices are kept low, which implies that the fidelity of the cat state can be enhanced by improvements to and the perfection of the classical optical system.

Intelligent Structure Searching and Designs for Nanoclusters: Effective Units in Atomic Manufacturing

Clusters, an aggregation of several to thousands of atoms, molecules, or ions, are the building blocks of novel functional materials by atomic manufacturing and exhibit excellent applications in catalysis, quantum information, and nanomedicine. The evolution of cluster structures has been studied for many years. Many effective structural search methods, such as genetic algorithm, basin‐hopping, and so on, have been developed. However, the efficient execution of these methods relies on precise energy calculators, such as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Up to now, limited by computational methods and capabilities, the researches mainly focus on free‐standing clusters, which are different from clusters in practical applications. Recently, the rapid development of big data‐driven machine learning is expected to replace DFT for high‐precision large‐scale computing. In this review, the present cluster search methods and challenges currently faced have been summarized. It is proposed that the development of artificial intelligence has the potential to solve some practical problems including the structural and properties evolution of clusters in complex environment, causing revolutionary developments in the fields of catalysis, quantum information, and nanomedicine based on clusters.

Maxwell Demon and Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen Steering

Research of Maxwell demon and quantum entanglement is important because of its foundational significance in physics and its potential applications in quantum information. Previous studies on the Maxwell demon have primarily focused on thermodynamics, taking into account quantum correlations. Here we consider from another perspective and ask whether quantum non-locality correlations can be simulated by performing work. The Maxwell demon-assisted Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering is thus proposed, which implies a new type of loophole. The application of Landauer’s erasure principle suggests that the only way to close this loophole during a steering task is by continuously monitoring the heat fluctuation of the local environment by the participant. We construct a quantum circuit model of Maxwell demon-assisted EPR steering, which can be demonstrated by current programmable quantum processors, such as superconducting quantum computers. Based on this quantum circuit model, we obtain a quantitative formula describing the relationship between energy dissipation due to the work of the demon and quantum non-locality correlation. The result is of great physical interest because it provides a new way to explore and understand the relationship between quantum non-locality, information, and thermodynamics.

Broadband silicon nitride integrated polarization rotators at 780 nm

Polarization management, and in particular polarization rotation, is becoming increasingly important for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). While fiber-optic networks are generally polarization insensitive, the large aspect ratio of high-index-contrast PIC waveguides leads to a large polarization-dependent response of integrated components such as waveguides, optical cavities, couplers, etc. Although foundry-processed polarization rotators operating at telecom and datacom wavelengths (C- and O-band) have been demonstrated, to date, there have been few reports of devices operating at shorter wavelengths. This work demonstrates silicon nitride (SiN) polarization rotators operating from λ=700-1000 nm (the I/Z-band) that take advantage of optical coupling between two waveguiding layers in a standard foundry process. We demonstrate a broadband white-light polarization measurement setup that enables precise characterization of the polarization-dependent transmission of photonic waveguide devices. Measurements on foundry-processed devices confirm full TE-to-TM rotation exhibiting a maximum polarization extinction ratio (PER) approaching 20 dB (limited by our measurement setup), and an exceptionally large bandwidth of up to 160 nm with an insertion loss less than 0.2 dB. Beam propagation method (3D-BPM) simulations show good agreement with experimental data and enable the device parameters to be adjusted to accommodate different operating wavelengths and geometries with no changes to the existing foundry process. This work opens up opportunities for applications in quantum information and bio-sensing where operation at λ<1000nm is needed.

Trade-off relations of quantum resource theory in Heisenberg models

Studying the relations between entanglement and coherence is essential in many quantum information applications. For this, we consider the concurrence, intrinsic concurrence and first-order coherence, and evaluate the proposed trade-off relations between them. In particular, we study the temporal evolution of a general two-qubit XYZ Heisenberg model with asymmetric spin-orbit interaction under decoherence and analyze the trade-off relations of quantum resource theory. For XYZ Heisenberg model, we confirm that the trade-off relation between intrinsic concurrence and first-order coherence holds. Furthermore, we show that the lower bound of intrinsic concurrence is universally valid, but the upper bound is generally not. These relations in Heisenberg models can provide a way to explore how quantum resources are distributed in spins, which may inspire future applications in quantum information processing.

Weakly Confined Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots as High-Purity Room-Temperature Single Photon Sources.

Colloidal perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as highly promising single photon emitters for quantum information applications. Presently, most strategies have focused on leveraging quantum confinement to increase the nonradiative Auger recombination (AR) rate to enhance single-photon (SP) purity in all-inorganic CsPbBr3 QDs. However, this also increases the fluorescence intermittency. Achieving high SP purity and blinking mitigation simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Here, we transcend this limitation with room-temperature synthesized weakly confined hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) QDs. Superior single photon purity with a low g(2)(0) < 0.07 ± 0.03 and a nearly blinking-free behavior (ON-state fraction >95%) in 11 nm FAPbBr3 QDs are achieved at room temperature, attributed to their long exciton lifetimes (τX) and short biexciton lifetimes (τXX). The significance of the organic A-cation is further validated using the mixed-cation FAxCs1-xPbBr3. Theoretical calculations utilizing a combination of the Bethe-Salpeter (BSE) and k·p approaches point toward the modulation of the dielectric constants by the organic cations. Importantly, our findings provide valuable insights into an additional lever for engineering facile-synthesized room-temperature PQD single photon sources.

CrSBr: An Air-Stable, Two-Dimensional Magnetic Semiconductor.

The discovery of magnetic order at the 2D limit has sparked new exploration of van der Waals magnets for potential use in spintronics, magnonics, and quantum information applications. However, many of these materials feature low magnetic ordering temperatures and poor air stability, limiting their fabrication into practical devices. In this Mini-Review, we present a promising material for fundamental studies and functional use: CrSBr, an air-stable, two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor. Our discussion highlights experimental research on bulk CrSBr, including quasi-1D semiconducting properties, A-type antiferromagnetic order (TN = 132 K), and strong coupling between its electronic and magnetic properties. We then discuss the behavior of monolayer and few-layer flakes and present a perspective on promising avenues for further studies on CrSBr.

Optical Properties of Low‐Defect Large‐Area Hexagonal Boron Nitride for Quantum Applications

Intrinsic defects and their concentrations in hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) play a key role in single‐photon emission. In this study, the optical properties of large‐area multilayer h‐BN‐on‐sapphire grown by metal‐organic chemical vapor deposition are explored. Based on the detailed spectroscopic characterization using both cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements, the material is devoid of random single‐point defects instead of a few clustered complex defects. The emission spectra of the measurements confirm a record‐low‐defect concentration of ≈104 cm−2. Post‐annealing, no significant changes are observed in the measured spectra and the defect concentrations remain unaltered. Through CL and PL spectroscopy, an optically active boron vacancy spin defect is identified and a novel complex defect combination arising from carbon impurities is revealed. This complex defect, previously unreported, signifies a unique aspect of the material. In these findings, the understanding of defect‐induced optical properties in h‐BN films is contributed, providing insights for potential applications in quantum information science.

Quantum α-fidelity of diagonalizable second-order Hamiltonians in multi-dimensional systems

How to characterize the similarity between two quantum states has received much attention recently. Motivated by the continued push in this direction, we propose a computable analytical formula for the quantum α-fidelity between diagonalizable second-order Hamiltonians, which is simply expressed in terms of the matrix representation of operators. Further, using this analytical formula, we calculate the α-fidelity of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional displaced-squeezed thermal states, the Liu-Tombesi oscillators, and twin-beam amplitude-squeezed states. Since α-fidelity can precisely characterize the approximation accuracy between two quantum states by adjusting the value of the parameter α, our results offer a richer fidelity family to quantify the similarity between diagonalizable second-order Hamiltonians in multi-dimensional systems, and hence may have potential applications in quantum information and quantum computing.

The future of quantum technologies: superfluorescence from solution-processed, tunable materials

Abstract One of the most significant and surprising recent developments in nanocrystal studies was the observation of superfluorescence from a system of self-assembled, colloidal perovskite nanocrystals [G. Rainò, M. A. Becker, M. I. Bodnarchuk, R. F. Mahrt, M. V. Kovalenko, and T. Stöferle, “Superfluorescence from lead halide perovskite quantum dot superlattices,” Nature, vol. 563, no. 7733, pp. 671–675, 2018]. Superfluorescence is a quantum-light property in which many dipoles spontaneously synchronize in phase to create a collective, synergistic photon emission with a much faster lifetime. Thus, it is surprising to observe this in more inhomogenous systems as solution-processed and colloidal structures typically suffer from high optical decoherence and non-homogeneous size distributions. Here we outline recent developments in the demonstration of superfluorescence in colloidal and solution-processed systems and explore the chemical and materials science opportunities allowed by such systems. The ability to create bright and tunable superfluorescent sources could enable transformative developments in quantum information applications and advance our understanding of quantum phenomena.

Tuning Excitation Transport in a Dissipative Rydberg Ring

We demonstrate the flexible tunability of excitation transport in Rydberg atoms, under the interplay of controlled dissipation and interaction-induced synthetic flux. Considering a minimum four-site setup, i.e., a triangular configuration with an additional output site, we study the transport of a single excitation, injected into a vertex of the triangle, through the structure. While the long-range dipole-dipole interactions between the Rydberg atoms lead to geometry-dependent Peierls phases in the hopping amplitudes of excitations, we further introduce on-site dissipation to a vertex of the triangle. As a result, both the chirality and destination of the transport can be manipulated through the flux and dissipation. In particular, we illustrate a parameter regime where our Rydberg-ring structure may serve as a switch for transporting the injected excitation through to the output site. The underlying mechanism is then analyzed by studying the chiral trajectory of the excitation and the time-dependent dissipation. The switchable excitation transport reported here offers a flexible tool for quantum control in Rydberg atoms, and holds interesting potentials for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information.

Identification of an X-Band Clock Transition in Cp'3Pr- Enabled by a 4f25d1 Configuration.

Molecular qubits offer an attractive basis for quantum information processing, but challenges remain with regard to sustained coherence. Qubits based on clock transitions offer a method to improve the coherence times. We propose a general strategy for identifying molecules with high-frequency clock transitions in systems where a d electron is coupled to a crystal-field singlet state of an f configuration, resulting in an MJ = ±1/2 ground state with strong hyperfine coupling. Using this approach, a 9.834 GHz clock transition was identified in a molecular Pr complex, [K(crypt)][Cp'3PrII], leading to 3-fold enhancements in T2 relative to other transitions in the spectrum. This result indicates the promise of the design principles outlined here for the further development of f-element systems for quantum information applications.

Entanglement Routing Design Over Quantum Networks

Quantum networks have emerged as a future platform for quantum information exchange and applications, with promising capabilities far beyond traditional communication networks. Remote quantum entanglement is an essential component of a quantum network. How to efficiently design a multi-routing entanglement protocol is a fundamental yet challenging problem. In this paper, we study a quantum entanglement routing problem to simultaneously maximize the number of quantum-user pairs and their expected throughput. Our approach is to formulate the problem as two sequential integer programming problems. We propose efficient entanglement routing algorithms for these two optimization problems and analyze their time complexity and performance bounds. Evaluation results highlight that our approach outperforms existing solutions in both the number of quantum-user pairs served and network throughput.

Enhancing quantum features and teleportation fidelity of two-mode non-Gaussian states using conditional measurements

The family of two-mode non-Gaussian entangled states, including the pair coherent states (PCSs) and their genealogies, has been extensively investigated regarding their quantum properties and their practical applications in quantum information. Specifically, certain states, such as the multiphoton catalytic pair coherent states (MCPCSs), have been newly introduced under specific experimental conditions. For a more feasible approach, in this paper, we introduce novel nonclassical states obtained by subtracting photons through conditional measurements using beam splitters applied to the two modes of the PCSs. These states are called pair coherent states with conditional measurements (PCSCMs). Our purpose is to demonstrate that the quantum features, such as entanglement, Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) correlation, EPR steering, and the average fidelity in teleportation can be enhanced in comparison with both the original PCSs and the MCPCSs. In specific cases, several characteristics are observed in PCSCMs but not inspected in both PCSs and MCPCSs. In our findings, we prove that the quantum characteristics within the PCSCMs are influenced not just by the number of detected photons, denoted by variables k and l, but also by the discrepancy in photon numbers, especially by the difference of k − l.
