Applications for Children with Autism in Preschool and Primary Education

<p>In this article, we decided to focus on applications for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) knowing the significant influence of them on those children. Below, we analyze the different types of applications that are available for children with ASD. The applications are presenting, have been categorized in three categories. The first category is Diagnostic Tools, the second is Intervention Tools and the third is generally Mobile Apps. This separation was made to give a clear view about the characteristics and the developmental area each application covers. Finally, the applications have been chosen based on positive reviews, in combined with how many had download and install them, whether they were easy to use and if they responded to what their description said they were providing.</p>

User Experiences from L2 Children Using a Speech Learning Application: Implications for Developing Speech Training Applications for Children

We investigated user experiences from 117 Finnish children aged between 8 and 12 years in a trial of an English language learning programme that used automatic speech recognition (ASR). We used measures that encompassed both affective reactions and questions tapping into the children' sense of pedagogical utility. We also tested their perception of sound quality and compared reactions of game and nongame-based versions of the application. Results showed that children expressed higher affective ratings for the game compared to nongame version of the application. Children also expressed a preference to play with a friend compared to playing alone or playing within a group. They found that assessment of their speech is useful although they did not necessarily enjoy hearing their own voices. The results are discussed in terms of the implications for user interface (UI) design in speech learning applications for children.

New Application of Children’s Sign Language Enlightenment Based on Data Glove

In order to enhance the learning interest of deaf-mute children as beginners in sign language and promote the balance of educational reform, we have developed a new application which based on data gloves, to be the enlightenment for children learning sign language. The application mainly includes three parts: data acquisition and conversion, wireless communication, and cartoon interactive application. The application, taking STM32 development board as the control core, is integrated with multiple sensor function modules including Wi-Fi wireless communication, three-axis gyroscope, bending resistor and others, therefore, it can realize the gesture recognition and data transmission. After repeated testing, the system has high accuracy in gesture recognition, not only data transmission is reliable but also the application response timely. Deaf-mute children can use the cartoonish application to get sign language examination questions and to answer by wearing data gloves, and then the system will give a star rating comprehensively based on whether the answer is correct, on whether the cue is clicked in answering question and on other aspects, so as to realize the interaction with the PC program and let deaf-mute children contact and learn sign language in games. The design concept of the application has received favorable response from Qingdao school for the deaf, which has a certain practical and promoted value.

Design and Application of Children's Entertainment Education Software in Preschool Education

The current preschool education children's educational software mostly ig-nores the preschool children's psychological characteristics and rigidly com-bines the educational and entertainment nature of the game, which affects the learning effect of preschool children. Based on the psychological charac-teristics of preschool children, the characteristics of preschool children's de-mand for computer games were deeply analyzed. In addition, the preschool children's entertainment software was designed and developed. The game was built according to the system elements and design principles of the edu-cational games, and the appropriate kindergarten curriculum content was se-lected so that pre-school children can be substituted and truly entertained. The practice showed that the preschool children's educational software cap-tured the psychological characteristics of preschool children. It is concluded that the software effectively promotes preschool children to obtain knowledge in a relaxed gaming environment and improves the learning ef-fect of preschool children.

Influence of Er:YAG Laser on Objective and Subjective Parameters of Stress during Sealant Application in Children.

Acceptance of lasers as alternatives and accessory tools to traditional methods in dental medicine has created an explosion of interest. Er:YAG laser is recommended for enamel conditioning. There is no study evaluating the anxiety in children during fissure sealing procedures when using Er:YAG laser compared to the routine application technique. To evaluate the objective and subjective stress parameters in children during a preventive procedure when using Er:YAG laser for additional enamel conditioning before pit and fissure sealant application compared to the routine clinical application technique. The study included sixty-four 6-12-year-old children, divided into two equal treatment groups. A standardized fissure sealant application was performed, as in the intervention group before acid etching, the occlusal surfaces of teeth were conditioned with Er:YAG laser (2940 nm). During the procedure, objective and subjective stress parameters were recorded. Significantly lower degree of dental anxiety was found at the end of the dental visit of the study group (p<0.001). During the professional cleaning of the tooth surface, the mean heart rate was low (95.55±14.29 bpm) within the physiological normal range. The objective and subjective stress parameters show no significant differences between the two subgroups during sealing procedure (p>0.05). Application of Er:YAG laser during sealant application does not provoke anxiety and is well accepted by children in dental environment. Preventive procedures at the beginning of a dental visit decrease the initial levels of dental anxiety and contribute to an effective treatment process.

Outcome of Topical Steroid Application in Children with Non-retractile Prepuce

True phimosis is overdiagnosed due to the failure to distinguish it from physiological phimosis, which is a normal developmental non retractability of the foreskin. The non-retractile prepuce in children is a cause of parental anxiety and concern. This leads to the majority of the children undergoing surgical procedures. Pathological phimosis needs to be differentiated from physiologic phimosis to avoid unnecessary circumcision. In recent years, topical steroid application use in cases of non-retractile prepuce has shown a good success rate and is well accepted by the parents. It has low risks, is cost effective and avoids anaesthetic and surgical complications.This is an observational study of 100 children with non-retractile foreskin who were managed by local application of topical steroid cream (0.1% Mometasone) over a period of 6 weeks. The non-retractibility was classified according to Kikiro’s classification. These patients were analyzed on the basis of age at presentation, complaints at the first presentation, grade of phimosis at first presentation (as per Kikiro’s classification), results of the topical steroid application as assessed at 6 weeks after starting application and after stopping of the steroid administered for 6 weeks. The results were analyzed on the basis of the resolution of symptoms and the decrease in Kikiro’s grade. Those patients in whom there was no response to treatment or who developed recurrence after stopping steroid treatment underwent circumcision. A total of 19 patients required surgical intervention in the form of circumcision. The use of topical steroids yields satisfactory results in patients with a non-retractile prepuce. It could be a first-line treatment for management in such cases and is an effective alternative designed to avoid unnecessary circumcision.

Adapted Shared Storybook Reading: A Study of Its Application for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders in Home Settings

This study investigated the use of an adapted shared reading protocol with three children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in home settings. Using a multiple baseline across participants design, this investigation replicated and extended a previous investigation by Browder et al. to children with ASD and home settings. In addition, this study was to investigate whether individual components of the intervention package contributed to its overall effectiveness. Finally, the extent to which the participating children generalized their ability to engage in adapted shared reading with the researcher to shared reading with their parents was explored. The results of the investigation indicate that the children with ASD demonstrated improvements in engagement in shared reading and these improvements generalized to shared reading with the children’s parents.

Surface Changes in Primary Teeth after the Application of Children’s Fluoride Toothpaste to Prevent Early Childhood Cavities

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of primary teeth with children’s fluoride toothpaste on enamel remineralization. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Sixty enamel specimens were divided into three groups as follows: Group 1 served as the control group, in Group 2, children’s toothpaste without sodium fluoride (NaF) was applied to the teeth three times a day for three min, and in Group 3, children’s fluoride toothpaste (0.243% NaF) was applied to enamel for four weeks. Each primary tooth surface was measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM; JSM-6300, JEOL, Japan). Findings: The children’s toothpaste containing 0.243% NaF promoted the enamel remineralization of the tooth surface from three weeks of treatment. When the surfaces of primary teeth were examined, the surfaces of teeth treated with toothpaste containing NaF were hardened and smooth. This study demonstrated that children’s fluoride toothpaste with NaF contribute to the improvement of children’s oral healthcare. Improvements/Applications: The children’s fluoride toothpaste containing 0.243% NaF suggests surface remineralization and prevents early childhood cavities.

Pulsed High-dose Dexamethasone Therapy and Its Application in Children with Immune Thrombocytopenia-Review

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the most common immune-mediated acquired bleeding disorders in children. The prognosis of majority of these patient are well, with recent complete remission. However, a few patients are facing the risk of bleeding since they do not respond to the first-line therapy, and need second-line therapy. The present second-line treatments are difficult to be popularized due to their efficacy, side-effects, costs and some other factors. The pulsed high-dose dexamethasone (HDD) therapy with its good effect, small adverse effects and low cost in adults has been used as the first-line therapy in newly diagnosed ITP, which now has attracted the attention of pediatricians. In this review, we briefly summarized the latest progress of pulsed HDD therapy for ITP in children.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of Parenting Style and Dimensions Questionnaire: Application for Children`s Health-related Behaviors

Background: Parenting style is associated with children's health-related behaviors. One of the popularity and applicability assessment tools is Parenting Style and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) that the lack of Iranian version can be seen.This study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of Iranian version of PSDQ.Materials and Methods: This study was done with randomized cluster sampling on 588 parents. Cronbach's α coefficient was used to determine the internal consistency and Pearson`s correlation coefficients was used for test-retest reliability and the construct validity. Conformity factor analysis was also applied to determine the construct validity. Results: Cronbach's α coefficient for two authoritative and authoritarian styles with the highest estimated value were 0.86 and it was 0.41 for permissive style. The results of the correlation test in all three afore mentioned styles were significant. Correlation coefficients between authoritative style and its subscales were about 0.86 to 0.89 and between authoritarian style and its subscales were about 0.81 to 0.87. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that goodness-of-fit indices, including CMIN/DF,GFI, CFI, IFI and RMSEA, were 2.1, 0.91, 0.90, 0.90, and 0.04, respectively, which indicated a good the construct validity of instrument.Conclusion: The PSDQ that has been translated into Persian obtained good reliability and validity. PSDQ questionnaire can be considered a useful tool in the assessments and interventions concerning parenting styles used in Iran.

Modelo teórico para el diseño y evaluación de la calidad en las apps infantiles (0-8 años)

Children are enthusiastic and highly motivated in front of screens of mobile devices. Parents and educators choose which applications and games will be used. But this selection is not supported by clear and founded information about which applications are suitable for children aged 0-8 years. An exploratory analysis of different international selection of top rated children's applications showed that classifications employ basic descriptive criteria and partial and arbitrary indications about the contents of the apps. The inclusion of parameters related to interactive design simplicity, the distribution of the elements on the screen, and the development of the attention and perception process, is discussed. This paper provides a theoretical model for building an effective and literature-based classification system in order to define the suitability of each educational App for children.

Off-Label Use of Ultrasound Contrast Agents for Intravenous Applications in Children: Analysis of the Existing Literature.

The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze the published data related to intravenous (IV) use of ultrasound (US) contrast agents in children. We searched the literature to collect all of the published studies reporting the IV administration of a second-generation US contrast agent in children. We analyzed 9 case series and 5 case reports, as well as 5 individual cases, of pediatric contrast-enhanced US use reported in a study group that also included adults. We found that 502 children underwent contrast-enhanced US examinations (mean age, 9.7 years; range, 1 day-18 years). Most patients (89%) were injected with the sulfur hexafluoride contrast agent SonoVue (Bracco SpA, Milan, Italy). The mean dose used was 1.5 mL (range, 0.1-9.6 mL). Only 10 patients (2%) had adverse reactions related to the contrast agent administration: 1 life-threatening anaphylactic shock and 9 mild transitory adverse effects. We additionally found 38 papers in which the study groups included at least 1 child; thus, we obtained a total of 540 reported cases of off-label use of IV US contrast agents in children. The most frequent target organ was the liver, and most indications were related to space-occupying lesion characterization and abdominal evaluations after blunt trauma. Some studies also evaluated the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced US in different clinical scenarios and found very good accuracy. Concordance between contrast-enhanced US imaging and the respective reference-standard imaging methods ranged between 83% and 100% in different studies. Our results support the idea that the IV use of US contrast agents in children is safe, feasible, diagnostically robust, and effective.

Privileged American Families and Independent Academic Consultants They Employ

This article focuses on how economically advantaged families hire independent educational consultants (IECs) to help them navigate the college application process. We argue that the help provided by IECs embodies the marketization of emotional and relational mediation that many privileged families pursue during times of great anxiety. We offer the concept of “family mediator” to illustrate the relationship between parents, children, and the IECs whom these families employ. First, this article will chronicle why many advantaged parents feel apprehensive about their children's application to college and how they decide to turn to IECs for help. Furthermore, we will demonstrate how privileged parents, especially mothers, rely on IECs to assuage their feelings and emotions. Finally, we will examine how IECs enable parents and children to avoid conflicts and sustain connections to each other. Nevertheless, we find that resorting to IECs as emotional and intergenerational mediators may not always work. Some parents and children occasionally resist the mediation provided by these IECs, just as a few IECs are unwilling to work as the bridge persons in these privileged families in order to protect their professional reputation and boundaries.

Exhaled NO: Determinants and Clinical Application in Children With Allergic Airway Disease.

Nitric oxide (NO) is endogenously released in the airways, and the fractional concentration of NO in exhaled breath (FeNO) is now recognized as a surrogate marker of eosinophilic airway inflammation that can be measured using a noninvasive technique suitable for young children. Although FeNO levels are affected by several factors, the most important clinical determinants of increased FeNO levels are atopy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis. In addition, air pollution is an environmental determinant of FeNO that may contribute to the high prevalence of allergic disease. In this review, we discuss the mechanism for airway NO production, methods for measuring FeNO, and determinants of FeNO in children, including host and environmental factors such as air pollution. We also discuss the clinical utility of FeNO in children with asthma and allergic rhinitis and further useful directions using FeNO measurement.
