SMART TRAVELLING WITH RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is being widely used now-a-days and is becoming more popular with every passing day. There are varied ap plications of this technology in various fields suc h as industry, communication, travel and transportation. Roads, rail ways, air traffic and container vessel shipping all share underlying abstractions of trans portation nets with hubs. This study is concerned w ith applications of RFID technology with Cloud computing, innovation in the field of travelling and its applications for different modes of transportation at Harbors, airports, train stations, road intersec tions providing security, coordination, to the users. Com bined with other technologies, RFID technology is b eing used for modern airports baggage system, for railro ad car identification, in container transportation systems, for fuel supply control of vehicles, in traffic man agement system and in travelling information system.

A Study on Exploring the Variables Influenced by Utilization of “Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)” Technology in Iran

The purpose of this paper is to introduce one of the leading new technologies, “Radio-frequency identification (RFID)”, and investigate the effects of applying this technology on target environment in Iran. The variables, affected by application of RFID technology in various environments, were extracted through the review of literature then a research was carried out in this field, and the obtained variables were localized by consulting with the experts in this area. A questionnaire was developed through using these variables and distributed among a sample of RFID technology providers and users after testing its the reliability and validity. Finally, the statistical tests on the obtained results from the research led to the discovery of components. The findings of this paper would be discovered components, which are affected by application of RFID technology, are as follows:Tracking quality, decision-making improvement, error control, warehouse management, cost leadership, level of assurance, inventory data, speed of provided service, data monitoring and order management. Considering the prevalent use of RFID technology in various industries around the world, the need for this technology and its benefits becomes obvious to everyone. This paper has created a proper vision of RFID for readers through collecting a wide range of RFID technology benefits as well as discovering the major components associated with application of this technology. Applications of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology with eMaintenance cloud for railway system

Radio frequency identification (RFID) helps automatic identification of objects using radio waves. This is not a new technology instead decades old and has been used during the World War II, when it was used by allied ground forces to track German bombers. It is a technology for wireless communication between a reader and a transponder/tag. This technology permits the transfer of data to the most diverse objects without the need for physical contact and uses intelligent barcodes to track items and have been successfully applied in military, security, healthcare, real time location tracking, vehicle identification and other areas. This paper is based on applications of RFID technology with eMaintenance cloud for railway system to analyze and visualize data of trains for the cost effective maintenance planning. Further, cloud computing is an emerging research area that can be utilised for acquiring an effective and efficient information logistics. Specifically, the widespread use of RFID will enable wagons to be tracked leading to better resource utilization, lower freight costs, and better maintenance. Therefore, it helps to provide greater control of the train carriages, making it easier to plan resources. However, RFID is a powerful tool that can help to improve industry proficiency, implementing this technology is not easy. Furthermore, operating RFID systems can be a challenging process. Thus, this paper is based on the application of RFID in the context of railway operation.

Application of RFID technology in error-free transfusion management in hospital wards

Application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) into transfusion management in hospital wards,for elimination of errors from transfusion.Its clinical practice in three years has significantly improved transfusion efficiency,optimized workflow and reduced nursing errors.In the meantime,it has improved informationization of supplies satisfactorily.The paper also discussed the merits and defects of RFID for reference and review of the readers. Analysis of the Auto Intelligent Control Based on RFID Technology

The control system is the main device to carry out executive action in enterprise, which assists the drivers' action inside the vehicles based on the actual route and maintains the running stability of the car so as to reduce the negative impact from the outside conditions on vehicle performance. In essence, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology belongs to the application of communications technology, which uses wireless transmission signal to identify and lock target identification, and then establishes corresponding information transmission mode, thus providing a virtualized operation platform for the target operation and control. This paper firstly analyzes the defects of the current auto control system, introducing the characteristics of RFID technology's application to auto control. Secondly this paper analyzes the design of GPS navigation control system based on RFID technology, so as to hope to make a useful contribution to the follow-up research.

Implementasi Rfid pada Perusahaan Penyewaan Mobil

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an identification technology based on radio waves. At this time, we will describe the application of RFID technology in a rental car company. The study discusses about information about how to implement RFID within the enterprise, the role of RFID in the enterprise, how to use RFID, and everything else related to RFID in the enterprise. The main purpose of writing this paper is to make easy for reader finding information about general description of RFID and its application to a car rental company. Furthermore, methodology components are type and source of Data, data collection technique, hypotheses and data analysis technique. Finally, a conclusion is made that that RFID is an identification technology that is relatively new and feasible at the car rental company which is an alternative to barcodes that have been widely used. The presence of RFID also provides a very beneficial effect to the company, as has been displayed through charts of various aspects of the company in the results section.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Application in Remanufacturing Operations

Remanufacturing operations deal with numerous types of used products and parts. For that reason, any missing parts will lead to the extension of remanufacturing lead-time because searching for the missing parts is time consuming. In order to detect the real-time locations for used parts, this paper proposes the application of RFID technology. A proof of concept RFID system is developed on SISCOM Assembly Cell-200. SISCOM is assumed as a small scale remanufacturing facility. The RFID system middleware is developed using LabVIEW 9 and the database is built using PHP & phpMyAdmin. With the availability of this system, the location of missing parts can be detected and the remanufacturing labor hours can be focused on value added activities.

Integrating patient digital photographs with medical imaging examinations.

We introduce the concept, benefits, and general architecture for acquiring, storing, and displaying digital photographs along with medical imaging examinations. We also discuss a specific implementation built around an Android-based system for simultaneously acquiring digital photographs along with portable radiographs. By an innovative application of radiofrequency identification technology to radiographic cassettes, the system is able to maintain a tight relationship between these photographs and the radiographs within the picture archiving and communications system (PACS) environment. We provide a cost analysis demonstrating the economic feasibility of this technology. Since our architecture naturally integrates with patient identification methods, we also address patient privacy issues.

The Application of Automatic Identification Technologies by the Czech Post

This article deals with the question of practical use of automatic identification technologies in postal sector, with special focus on using barcode technologies and radio frequency identification in Czech Post. After introductory section, which is aimed at description of current situation and analysis of crucial factors of choosing automatic identification technologies, there are subchapters discussing the theoretical base of both technologies, as well as their practical use in postal sector. In the part of practical application of both identification technologies is specified the basic structure of barcodes used by Czech Post and also the description of international project UNEX, which deals with the measurement of the quality aspects of selected postal products and services. Concluding part contains a brief outline of possible radio frequency identification technology application.

Applying RFID Technology in Tourism Industry: The Case Study of Hotel in Taipei

The study analyzes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology developments reported in tourism industries, methods used, contexts covered, and provides an overview of the wide range of ways that RFID is being applied to improve tourism processes in hotel. The study develops a research framework: RFID Technology Application Model and stresses that RFID application brings many benefits for hotel, the study summarizes their readiness on different attributes into the two approaches: operations-centric approach and technology-centric, and evaluates the major applications of the two approaches for the case study of hotel in Taipei. The findings show that different RFID applications in tourism industry lead the different benefits. The study offers hotel some managerial implications of how to gain benefits, and make suggestions for internal operating management, as well as recommendations for future research directions. It would be beneficial for future research to study similarities and differences in best practices for RFID implementations not only between different sectors within tourism, but also across industries.

The Application of RFID Technology in the Dangerous Goods Logistics

A Study on RFID Adoption in the Grocery Retailing Industry of Thailand

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an emerging technology for supply chain management suitable for the retail industry. Large distributing companies such as Wal-Mart, Tesco, and Target have adopted RFID for real-time tracking and efficient order assortment of fast moving products. An agriculture-based developing country with a huge population and strong internal consumption, Thailand has a big grocery retailing industry that provides ample opportunities for the application of RFID technology. Through a questionnaire survey, this study investigated the current status of RFID adoption in the grocery industry of Thailand. The findings reveal that the industry is aware of the potential benefits that RFID may bring but also concerned with the various challenges in implementation. Although companies surveyed are planning to adopt the technology, none have fully implemented an RFID system. This reveals that RFID adoption is still in its infancy in the grocery retailing industry of the country. The major concerns of the firms include high implementation cost and low return on investment, different system designs and multiple standards, and the lack of technical expertise and management experience to ensure success in adopting the technology.

Security Threats and Challenges for RFID and WSN Integration

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are the combined technologies that will spread in the near future to enter all of our everyday activities. However, the security of these technologies is very much vulnerable. Adding some security measures to small computation powered devices that cannot handle the available security algorithms is considered a challenge. However, even low powered devices must be protected in ways that will present sufficient computational challenges to adversaries. This paper introduces suggested steps to build a secure protocol for the combined RFID and WSN technology application systems. Moreover, it demonstrates the possible attacks and threats on these combined technologies by analyzing their system environment and finally it discusses the possible threats that may occur.

Cell controller design for RFID based flexible manufacturing systems

A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a complex system with high synchronicity. The cell controller is the central nervous system to control the entire FMS. It is no simple task to construct a good cell controller, able to effectively display synchronicity, solve conflicting events and analyse an entire system; thus, this study adopts the colour Petri net (CPN) method to construct and analyse the model, and utilises a multi-level distributed control framework to analyse the entire FMS, thus, solving all levels of control and coordination problems. This study also employs a modular design to develop an FMS cell controller based on radio frequency identification (RFID). Data values carried by CPN colour tokens, which represent real-time information, may be written to the RFID Tag. This article takes a virtual FMS in the MIBI Laboratory of the National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) as the test object, and aims to write a program for a cell controller, which is connected with the virtual machines, and to validate the feasibility of the proposed integration method. Using a failure model analysis/repair line (FMA/R Line) of the Thin Film Transistor/Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) plant as an object for validation, this article discusses the feasibility of applying this method to a real production line. It is intended that the proposed method of developing a cell controller could serve as a reference template for tracking and control, facilitating the rapid introduction and application of RFID technology into industrial FMS in the future.

Implementation of Automatic Identification Technology in a Process of Fixture Assembly/Disassembly

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology presents automatic identification technology that can be used in product life cycle various phases, especially in the manufacturing phase. The analysis of possible application of RFID technology in machining and inspection operations for fixture manufacturing assembly/disassembly process is presented in this paper. Furthermore, assemble/disassemble fixture manufacturing system structure and conception is presented. An analysis involves hardware and software components that the designed system for assembly/disassembly needs to have. Suggested system verification was done in laboratory conditions. Verification uses ninety-six parts and adequate fixtures. The paper concludes with final remarks, discussing advantages and disadvantages of the developed system.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) methodology for product tracking based on radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology

Existing product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions today do not support product tracking. These solutions only support data exchange in company about products. Recent investigations indicate growing need to trace and manage data on products even when they leave the original production system, covering other product lifecycle stages such as exploitation, servicing, EoL (End of Life) warehousing, disassembly, recycling, and re-assembly. This paper describes radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based model, as part of a PLM solution, which allows updating of all critical product management information pertaining to changes in product status during its lifetime. The developed model allows application of RFID technology through dedicated software and hardware solution and software tools for decision making based on product information obtained by continuous tracing and updating, from the moment of delivery to end-user, to the moment of its life end. The model was verified on a circulation pump case study. The results gained in this study have shown that the proposed RFID-based PLM model is sufficiently generalized and with some adjustments could be used for various products.

RFID Technology and its Application to Port-Based Container Logistics

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is among the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have been proposed for substantially improving performance of container port operations. In addition, more implementation is to be expected in the field of container yard and depot as well as in logistics-related activities. Seaports, especially container terminals, are expected to become one of the efficient nodes among all logistics activities with the help of IoT technology in the operation practice of sea port, which plays an essential role in transportation; there is a trend that IoT technology, including RFID technology, is to be adopted to fulfill future electronic identity verification and remote location and control over cargo. A goal of this article is to critically evaluate RFID application for operational procedures in port-based container logistics. Based on that, some previously used technologies are briefly introduced with their effectiveness and efficiencies so that comparison can be made. We also discuss current application of RFID technology in the field of container logistics. Furthermore, RFID application trend from wider perspectives is also observed. That is to say, applications derived from cargo demand side and supply chain/network management side can also be triggers that lead to increase in the number of application in the near future.

Machining fixture assembly/disassembly in RFID environment

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a novel approach for identification of machining fixtures, and their elements in an assembly/disassembly process.Design/methodology/approach – Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is applied to identification of physical machining fixtures and their basic elements.Findings – Based on comprehensive testing in industrial conditions it was established by this research that the use of RFID technology contributes to significant reduction of assembly/disassembly time of machining fixtures.Practical implications – Practical applicability of RFID technology is emphasized and demonstrated in the paper. The suggested system is proven superior in comparison with conventional methods for identification of fixtures/fixture elements which qualifies it for real industrial application.Originality/value – To the best of authors' knowledge there are no previous reports of successful application of RFID technology on identification of fixtures/fixture elements.

Factors that influence the implementation of collaborative RFiD programs

Purpose – Radio frequency identification (RFiD) programs are being mandated by many entities, such as Wal‐Mart and the Department of Defense, but what factors lead to successful implementation of these programs by their business partners?Design/methodology/approach – This paper is conceptual in nature. It briefly reviews current applications of RFiD technology and proposes a model for RFiD implementation through partners.Findings – While some companies are quickly adopting RFiD technology, little is known regarding important factors for successful implementation.
