Meta-analysis: The effect of problem-based learning on higher-order thinking skills of Indonesian students

Higher order thinking skills are one of the competencies developed in learning, especially in mathematics. One of the effective learning models to improve higher order thinking skills is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). In this study, a meta-analysis method was used, which involved analyzing various articles that had been collected. Search procedures through Google Scholar and Garuda Portal and found 99 articles that discuss the effect of PBL implementation in Indonesia on students' higher order thinking skills. Of these 99 articles, only 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and were then analyzed using the meta-analysis method. This meta-analysis method provides results in the form of a combined effect size that describes the extent of the influence of PBL implementation on students' higher order thinking skills. Based on the interpretation of the combined effect size, it can be concluded that overall, the application of PBL has a moderate effect on students' higher order thinking skills. In other words, PBL has a positive impact in improving students' ability to think critically, analytically, creatively, and think reflectively. In addition, this study also considered study characteristics, such as education level and year of study. The statistical analysis showed the effect of PBL implementation in improving students' ability to think critically, analytically, creatively, and reflectively.

Problem-Based Learning to Metacognition in Physics Learning in Indonesia: Literature Review

Physics learning encountered a hurdle due to students' insufficient metacognitive abilities, emphasizing the need to improve their understanding of learning and problem-solving procedures. This literature review aimed to explain the results of applying Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to metacognition in physics learning in Indonesia. This literature review was sourced from scholarly articles published between 2013-2023, retrieved via Google Scholar using tools like Publish or Perish and Open Knowledge Map. The search utilized keywords such as “Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah” or “Problem-Based Learning” and “Metacogni*” and “physics”. These criteria included relevance to PBL in physics learning, metacognitive, publication in reputable journals, and full-text availability. From the initial pool of 214 articles, a selection process was applied based on the literature review criteria, including 11 national and one international article. Based on the findings of the literature review analysis, it was discovered that there was limited research on the application of PBL to metacognition in physics education in Indonesia, indicating a need for further exploration. Of the 12 articles examined, only 2 (16.7%) focused on developing PBL tools to facilitate metacognition, ensuring validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing learner metacognition. Additionally, 6 of the 12 articles (50.0%) suggested that implementing the PBL model in physics education improved metacognitive abilities. However, 4 of the 12 articles (33.3%) reported no significant impact on enhancing metacognition through PBL learning methodologies. The results of this study indicated a complex correlation between PBL and the advancement of metacognitive skills in physics education. This underscored the significance of further research to pinpoint the factors influencing these outcomes and to refine PBL instructional approaches.

교직이론 과목에서 현장 역량 강화를 위한 혼합형 PBL 수업 사례 연구

This study attempted to present a specific case of blended Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in teacher education course to enhance the field competency of pre-service teachers. The participants were first-year adult learners majoring in Early Childhood Education who were enrolled in the educational psychology course. The blended PBL process was organized by appropriately combining face-to-face and online sessions, following the sequence of 'Course Introduction,' 'Problem Presentation,' 'Subsequent Problem Steps,' 'Presentation of Results and Discussion,' and 'Review and Evaluation of Learning Outcomes.' Five PBL problems were developed, and during the initial five weeks, students were assigned to individually contemplate one problem per week. In the 10th week, a face-to-face group discussion session was conducted. Subsequently, continuous online communication through Learning Management System (LMS) and Social Networking Services (SNS) was maintained, leading to the group presentation of the final project at the end of the semester. The analysis of reflection journals submitted by students after the class was conducted to assess the effectiveness of a blended PBL course. The case presented in this study proposes a form of instructional design that integrates real-world experiences, suggesting a hybrid approach to PBL in education. Furthermore, the application of blended PBL in educational psychology courses suggests the potential to enhance field competency in teacher education courses.

Problem-Based Learning as a Teaching Method: An Experience at University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) stands as a pedagogical approach that stimulates students’ engagement by immersing them in learning experiences centred around real-world problems or scenarios. Under the guidance of tutors, students work in small groups to identify and resolve issues, drawing insights from various sources such as notes, books, journals, newspapers, and online resources. This paper aims to share the practical application of PBL in both compulsory and elective courses at the University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The purpose of this paper is to integrate Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in their instructional planning and manifest during the facilitation process of PBL as a teaching method. The experience of implementing PBL was witnessed in courses like “Islam and Leadership” with 49 students, Arabic language courses with 16 students and the compulsory course “Philosophy and Current Issues” with around 1200 students. This approach, facilitated by lecturer team, promotes collaborative learning activities, discussions, teaching, observation, and reflective practices. Student-centric PBL offers a positive impact on group collaboration, thereby improving the overall teaching and learning quality.

Penerapan Problem Based Learning Berbantuan Media Puzzle untuk Mewujudkan Karakter Profil Pelajar Pancasila pada Siswa Kelas X-4 SMAN Pakusari

Dunia pendidikan saat ini mengarah pada proses pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa. Kurikulum Merdeka diciptakan sebagai kerangka kurikulum yang lebih fleksibel yang berfokus pada materi penting dan pengembangan bakat dan karakter siswa. Di kelas X-4, siswa kurang antusias dan tertarik dalam proses pembelajaran serta pemahaman terhadap materi biologi yang kurang sehingga Pengembangan Profil Pelajar Pancasila bertujuan untuk membantu siswa mencapai tingkat pemahaman, perilaku, dan karakter yang berlandaskan pada nilai-nilai pancasila. Salah satu cara untuk mengintegrasikan Profil Pelajar Pancasila ke dalam kegiatan pendidikan formal adalah dengan menggunakan model PBL dan untuk menarik perhatian siswa dibantu dengan media puzzle di dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan model pembelajaran problem-based learning berbantuan media puzzle untuk mewujudkan karakter profil pancasila. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan subjek penelitian adalah peserta didik kelas X-4 di SMAN Pakusari. Teknik sampling dalam penelitian ini adalah non-probability sampling. Analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis naratif, dengan instrumen lembar observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran problem-based learning berbantuan media puzzle untuk mewujudkan karakter profil pancasila di kelas X-4 SMAN Pakusari dapat diterapkan dengan baik. Secara keseluruhan, aspek pada Profil Pelajar Pancasila terdapat kaitan dengan sintaks model pembelajaran PBL mulai dari pemberian apresiasi, berdiskusi, presentasi, hingga melakukan evaluasi. Kemudian, model pembelajaran Problem-Based Learning dapat mewujudkan 6 aspek atau dimensi Profil Pelajar Pancasila peserta didik kelas X-4 SMAN Pakusari.

Investigation into the effectiveness of using Problem-Based Learning in Teaching Communication Skills in English to Engineering Students

In the trend of innovating university teaching methods in the direction of student-centered learning, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method is being studied and applied in higher education institutions in many countries. The article proposes the application of a problem-based teaching approach to teaching English communication skills to engineering students. The study included 45 undergraduate students, 42 males and 3 female, majoring in Engineering and Technology of Fast-tracked program and enrolled in an EFL course at University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University. With a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the research has shown the effect of the application of problem-based learning in teaching communication skills in English to engineering students, and shows students' positive attitude towards these activities in their learning. Besides, the research has also found out the main difficulties of students when they implemented group works to solve problems. It came to the conclusion that problem-based learning is an ideal teaching method since it enables engineering students not only to improve significantly their oral and written communication skills but also to apply the content knowledge in their major in the English language course. It is hoped that this study can provide researchers and teachers with useful implication for using English as a medium of instruction in sciences related subjects.
 

Penerapan Model Pembelajaran Problem-Based Learning terhadap Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis dan Aktivitas Belajar Peserta Didik pada Materi Hidrolisis Garam

This research is motivated by the existence of learning problems at MAN 1 Semarang City which still uses conventional learning models, so that students find it difficult to understand the subject matter delivered by the teacher. Therefore the researchers applied the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model with the hope that learning would be more interesting and able to understand students so that the expected results could be achieved. This study aims to find out how students' critical thinking skills and learning activities are carried out through the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model in Salt Hydrolysis material. This research is a quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design method. Methods of data collection using test questions (critical thinking skills) and observation (learning activities). The application of PBL in the learning process can have a positive influence on students' critical thinking skills and activities. This is proven through the t-test analysis of critical thinking skills tcount = 8.071 and ttable =. 2,021. As for learning activities tcount = 5.441 ttable = 2.021, it is concluded that learning using the PBL model is more effective than learning applied using conventional models.

Enhancing Learning in Biology for Engineers: A Problem Based Case Study

Abstract— Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is acknowledged as an effective pedagogical approach that facilitates a deeper understanding of concepts, surpassing a 90% comprehension rate. Renowned as a dynamic and student-centered activity, PBL fosters out-of-the-box thinking, thereby supporting the enhancement of students' skills and creativity. This paper specifically delves into the application of problem-based learning in the context of the third-year undergraduate Biology for Engineers course. PBL activities tailored for the Biology for Engineers curriculum are meticulously crafted to provide students with a progressive and comprehensive grasp of biological concepts, coupled with their practical applications in the realm of engineering. By adopting a creative, applied, and design thinking approach, PBL enables students to traverse the intricacies of the biology course effectively. In the Biology for Engineers course, PBL activities are strategically designed to facilitate a step-by-step acquisition of in-depth knowledge and a nuanced understanding of the real-life applications of biology in engineering contexts.This deliberate approach not only augments students' experiential learning of biology but also nurtures their creativity. Significantly, the PBL methodology empowers students by instilling a sense of ownership over the course, thereby contributing to their overall academic and professional development. The Application of Problem-Based Learning Combined With Case-Based Learning in EEG Teaching.

The aim of this study is to explore the application effectiveness and value of combining problem-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL) in clinical electroencephalography (EEG) education. A total of 104 standardized training for residents and refresher physicians from the Neurology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Neurology Department of Chongqing Yubei Hospital, and Neurology Department of Banan Hospital of Chongqing Medical University were enrolled. According to randomization principles, 52 participants were assigned into the PBL-CBL combination group and 52 subjects were assigned into the control group. We used statistical methods to compare the differences between the 2 groups in basic theory, case analysis, practical assessment scores, and teaching satisfaction. In terms of basic theory, case analysis, practical assessment scores, and teaching satisfaction, there were significant differences between the 2 groups, and the PBL-CBL combination group was superior to the control group (P < .05). In clinical EEG education, the teaching model of combining PBL and CBL has certain application effects and value.

Profile of High School Students' Problem-Solving Skills and the Application of Problem-Based Learning: A Preliminary Study

This study's purpose is to obtain a profile of students' problem-solving skills and describe the achievement of implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in high schools. The profile of problem-solving skills was obtained by giving tests and questionnaires to 53 students, while the achievement of implementing the PBL model was obtained by interviewing six students and one chemistry teacher. The research data obtained is then described. The findings revealed that the students' problem-solving skills remained low, namely in the poor and very poor categories with a percentage of 67.93%. Meanwhile, students' problem-solving skills were in the enough category at 20.75%, in the good category at 11.32%, and in the very good category were not found. This study also demonstrates that the teacher's application of learning with the PBL has yet to lead to students achieving the problem-solving skill indicators that are measured. In addition, students' prior knowledge was found to have contributed to the achievement of these indicators. This study suggests adapting and modifying the PBL model's syntax based on all present constraints to develop a new learning model capable of appropriately training students' problem-solving skills by focusing on the side of students' prior knowledge, formulation hypothesis, and reflection activities in learning.

A case study analysis of problem-based learning within a fabrication laboratory in a southwestern secondary charter school

The purpose of this study was to explore how teachers at a southwestern secondary private charter school utilize the on-campus fabrication lab to promote the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL). Guided by the theory of constructivism, I qualitatively explored the processes teachers engage in when implementing a PBL lesson using a multi-case study design. Five teachers and two fabrication lab directors from various content areas were interviewed and observed. Five overall themes emerged from the data: 1) the differing emphasis on PBL framework components; 2) conflicts, limitations, and constraints perceived with PBL; 3) teachers use of PBL for cognitive development; 4) the role of the environment in PBL; and 5) the role of reflection in the PBL framework. Research recommendations include further exploration into the factors that contribute to a positive environment conducive to PBL, in-depth investigation into the role of each step in the PBL framework, and additional observation periods to elicit the impacts of PBL over time. Recommendations for practice include purposeful teacher reflection, scaffolded planning, strengthening connections between PBL and real-world applications, and strategies for increased student support and encouragement in the classroom.&#x0D;

The Effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model on Students' Critical Thinking Ability in Sound Wave Material

Education is a process of fostering and developing human resources that are directly beneficial for educating the nation's life. This study aims to describe the critical thinking ability of students in class XI of Senior High School with the application of problem-based learning (PBL) physics learning model. The results of the research are in the form of learning implementation, critical thinking ability, and students' responses. The type of research used is Quasi exsperimental design with Non-equivalent control group design. The research instruments consisted of test observation sheets, critical thinking ability test sheets, and response questionnaire instrument sheets. The results showed the results of the implementation of physics learning with a problem-based learning (PBL) learning model on critical thinking ability, which was implemented with a score of 91.11% and 92.85% in the first meeting and second meeting respectively in the very good category. The problem-based learning (PBL) learning model has a significant effect on the critical thinking ability of students on sound wave material by 81.27%. Students' responses after applying the physics learning of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to critical thinking ability get an average percentage of 85.90% in the very good category.

The learning paradigm shift emphasizes the integration of 21st century skills into learning activities. SMAN 4 Malang as a driving school in Malang City has implemented Independent Curriculum in producing students who have the competence and character of the Pancasila Student Profile. The Pancasila Student Profile has relevance to the skills needed in the 21st century. Problem solving skills and creative thinking skills as dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile are classified into the main abilities that students need to have to face the challenges of the 21st century. However, based on observations of problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills of students in class XI MIPA 3 are still low. Efforts can be made by implementing Problem-based Learning. This study aims to improve problem solving skills and creative thinking skills of XI grade students in Biology learning using Problem-Based Learning. This type of research is a Classroom Action Research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle includes planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were students of class XI MIPA 3 totaling 31 students. The research data in the form of qualitative data were reduced, grouped, and narrated. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively inferentially using paired sample t test. The results showed a difference in the average problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills before and after PBL was applied, so this study proves that the application of PBL can improve students' problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills in Biology learning.

Application of Problem-Based Learning in Biotechnology Learning Contains Local Potential Jruek Drien Aceh to Improve Problem-Solving and Self-Directed Learning Skills of High School Students

Mastery of 21st-century skills by students is very dependent on the education and learning process. This research aims to measure the increase in students' problem-solving and self-directed learning skills. One of the biotechnology lessons that highlights the local potential of Aceh's Jrek Drien which can be a solution to overcome this problem. The research method used was quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study was class X (Ten) students with a research sample of two classes, experimental and control classes, the research sample was determined based on convenience sampling. Data collection instruments used a problem-solving skills description test and a self-rating scale self-directed learning (SRSSDL) questionnaire. The results of the research showed that students' problem-solving skills increased with an average gain score for the experimental group of 22.44, while for the control group, it was 15.00 with the N-gain score for the experimental group being in the medium category and the control group being in the medium category of 0.320. Meanwhile, the students' self-directed learning ability obtained an average score of 81.61 for the experimental group and 79.12 for the control group. Students showed a positive response to the implementation of problem-based learning containing the local potential of Jrek Drien in the good category. Based on the research findings and results, it is stated that there is a significant difference in the increase in learning outcomes of students' problem-solving skills and self-directed learning between the experimental and control classes

Research on the Application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Teaching Method in Clinical Emergency Teaching

Objective: To explore the application advantages of problem-based learning (PBL) teaching method in clinical emergency teaching. Methods: Two classes of students in the five-year clinical medicine major of our university were selected as the research subjects and divided into two groups according to different teaching methods. Among them, 50 students who received the traditional teaching method constituted the control group, while 52 students who received the PBL teaching method constituted the observation group. After one semester, an exam was conducted to assess their theoretical knowledge and first-aid practical skills, and evaluate their clinical thinking skills. At the same time, a teaching satisfaction questionnaire was distributed to evaluate the teaching satisfaction. Results: The results of the t-test showed that the observation group was significantly higher than the control group in terms of theoretical assessment, first aid practical assessment, and clinical thinking skills, and the differences were statistically significant (P &lt; 0.05). The results of the χ2 test showed that the difference in teaching satisfaction between the observation group and the control group was statistically significant (P &lt; 0.05), and the teaching satisfaction in the observation group was significantly higher than the control group. Conclusion: Compared with traditional teaching methods, applying PBL teaching method in clinical emergency teaching can achieve more significant teaching effects. Students’ mastery of theoretical knowledge, first aid practical skills, and clinical thinking skills can be effectively strengthened, and it is conducive to improving teaching satisfaction.

Meningkatan Keaktifan Belajar Siswsa Melalui Model Pembelajaran Problem Based Learning (PBL) Kelas IV FASE B Di SDN 16 Menawai Tekam

The purpose of this study is to improve student activeness and learning outcomes through the application of problem-based learning (PBL) learning models.The type of research used is PTK. The subject of research of students of grade IV. Data collection techniques use tests, observation data, activeness assessment rubrics. The data analysis techniques used are descriptive, quantitative and qualitative. The results of the study on learning activity in the precycle (64.87%) 10 inactive students in cycle I increased to (24.32%) 9 students were quite active and in cycle II increased to (83.78%) 14 students who were active. Meanwhile, precycle learning outcomes showed completeness of (41%) 10 students completed then increased in cycle 1 to (54%), 14 students completed and (81%) 14 students completed in cycle II. Thus, through the application of the problem-based learning (PBL) learning model, it can increase the activeness and learning outcomes of grade IV students of SDN 16 Menawai Tekam.

Using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in an Undergraduate Ergonomics Course

Ergonomics courses typically cover a range of topics related to the design and organization of workplaces to optimize human performance and well-being while minimizing injury risk and discomfort. This study introduces the PBL application steps to attract attention to the importance of noise not only in workplaces but also in daily life. The driving question is determined as “How can we assess and minimize the perceived daily noise exposure of people to sustain hearing health?”. Then, the students are asked to evaluate the PBL activities at the end of the term. Among the students who completed all activities, 60% strongly agreed, 32% agreed that PBL contributed to the understanding of the subject, and only 8% stated that PBL didn’t make a significant contribution when learning the topic of concern. The PBL framework developed for “noise” has the potential to be enhanced and adapted for other topics in this course.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the application of problem-based learning to improve creative thinking abilities in economics and business student. This research is classroom action research carried out at Medan City Private Universities in the odd semester 2023-2024. The informants in the research are 10 economics and business students at Medan City Private Universities in the odd semester 2023-2024. Data analysis in this research uses qualitative descriptive. The steps for implementing this research consist of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research results show that problem-based learning can improve creative thinking abilities in economics and business student at Medan City Private Universities in the odd semester 2023-2024.

Application of Problem-Based Learning Improves the Learning Outcomes of Electric Motor Installation for Students of SMKN 1 Kulisusu

This classroom action research aims to improve the learning process by applying a problem-based learning model to improve learning outcomes for the Electric Motor Installation Protection System class XI TITL students of State Vocational High School 1 Kulisusu. This study uses two stages of the cycle. Cycle I students achieved learning outcomes of 45.7% (incomplete) and 54.8% (completed), with an average score of 68.34. Cycle II students achieved learning outcomes of 11.42% (incomplete) and 88.57% (completed), with an average value of 82.51. Applying this learning improves student outcomes in the second cycle stage, namely the achievement results of 88.57% of the total 35 students, with an average value of 82.51. Thus, a problem-based learning model can improve student learning outcomes in class XI TITL State Vocational High School 1 Kulisusu.
