Phonon Blockade in a Hybrid Quadratically Coupled Optomechanical System

AbstractPhonon statistics in a hybrid optomechanical system, where a mechanical resonator is quadratically coupled to a cavity and couples with another resonator via Coulomb interaction is studied. It is found that the conventional and unconventional phonon blockade can be both achieved at the same parameter regime, which is confirmed by analytical and numerical results. By analyzing the energy level structure, it is found that the anharmonicity of the system is the joint action of both the Coulomb interaction and the optomechanical coupling, where the nonlinearity introduced by the latter has a more significant effect on one branch of the conventional phonon blockade. In addition, the phonon blockade can be enhanced by introducing the mechanical parametric amplifier with optimal parameters, where the physical mechanism underlying comes from the multi‐pathway destructive interference. It is found that the phonon blockade is fragile toward thermal noise due to the weak quantum interference, which can be overcome by increasing the driving strength and applying the mechanical parametric amplifier with suitable parameters. This work may provide a way to manipulate the phonon blockade and can be helpful to the application of quantum information processing.

Topological protection of dual-polarization biphoton states in photonic crystals

Polarization control is a major issue in topological quantum optics that limits reliable generation and transmission of quantum states. This study presents what we believe to be a novel topological photonic crystal design that provides topological protection for biphoton pairs for both TE and TM polarization. By well-designed cell configurations within the lattice, two topological boundaries emerge that can accommodate TM and TE modes at the same time. By adjusting the dispersion curves, we can further design nonlinear four-wave mixing processes within the topological photonic crystals and provide theoretical explanations for the entanglement of the dual-polarization biphoton states. Numerical results confirm the robust transport of entangled photon pairs, even when subjected to sharp bending. Moreover, combining the dual-polarization topological photonic crystal with a polarization beam splitter enables the preparation of polarization-encoded maximally entangled states. Our work exhibits significant potential for applications in robust optical quantum information processing and quantum secure communication.

Trade-off relations of quantum resource theory in Heisenberg models

Studying the relations between entanglement and coherence is essential in many quantum information applications. For this, we consider the concurrence, intrinsic concurrence and first-order coherence, and evaluate the proposed trade-off relations between them. In particular, we study the temporal evolution of a general two-qubit XYZ Heisenberg model with asymmetric spin-orbit interaction under decoherence and analyze the trade-off relations of quantum resource theory. For XYZ Heisenberg model, we confirm that the trade-off relation between intrinsic concurrence and first-order coherence holds. Furthermore, we show that the lower bound of intrinsic concurrence is universally valid, but the upper bound is generally not. These relations in Heisenberg models can provide a way to explore how quantum resources are distributed in spins, which may inspire future applications in quantum information processing.

Helicity-Sensitive Terahertz Detection in Monolayer 1T'-WTe2.

Valleytronics, identified as electronic properties of the energy band extrema in momentum space, has been intensively revived following the emergence of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as their valley information can be controlled and probed through the spin angular momentum of light. Previous optical investigations of valleytronics have been limited to the visible/near-infrared spectral regime through which the carriers of most TMDCs can be excited. Monolayer 1T'-WTe2 with broken time-reversal symmetry provides a fertile platform to study the long-wavelength photonic properties in different valleys. Here, we employed a circularly polarized terahertz (THz) laser to selectively excite the valley of monolayer 1T'-WTe2 and demonstrate that the helicity-dependent photoresponse is generated via the photogalvanic effect (PGE). We also observed that the photocurrent is controlled by circular polarization and the external electric field. Because of the tunable Berry curvature dipole derived from the nontrivial wave functions near the inverted gap edge in monolayer WTe2, the bandgap can be tuned efficiently. Our results provide a versatile venue for controlling, detecting, and processing valleytronics and applications in on-chip THz imaging and quantum information processing.

Microwave assisted Fraunhofer diffraction pattern in a four-level light–matter coupling scheme

The experimental realization of two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetically induced grating is explored by monitoring the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern in a microwave-driven four-level Y-type atomic medium under the action of two orthogonal standing-wave (SW) fields. Due to the position-dependent atom–field interaction, the information about the high diffraction order of the probe light can be obtained via the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the probe light. It is found that the diffraction behavior is significantly improved due to the joint quantum interference induced by the SW and microwave-driven cycling fields. Most importantly, the amplitude and phase diagram of the transmission function of the probe light can be modulated at a particular position and the probe energy may transfer to the high orders of the diffraction by properly adjusting the system parameters. The proposed scheme may provide a promising way to achieve highly sensitive diffraction patterns with applications in quantum information processing.

High efficiency independent modulation at dual-wavelength based on Pancharatnam–Berry and propagation phases

Metasurfaces capable of controlling multiple wavelengths independently have attracted broad interests these years due to their significance in multi-channel information processing applications. Previous solving strategies include spatial multiplexing or extensive searching for appropriate structures, both of which have their own disadvantageous, such as low efficiency, large computer resource requirement, or time consumption. In this paper, by combining the Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase and propagation phase, we propose a strategy to simplify the design complexity in a dual-wavelength metasurface system, in which two simple rectangular-shaped dielectric pillars (T1 and T2) with different aspect ratios are chosen as basic structures and crossed at the geometric center to achieve manipulation. The larger pillar T2 controls the longer wavelength through the PB phase while the smaller T1 acts as a perturbation to T2. The crossed T1&T2 is studied as a whole to tune the short wavelength. The investigations by the multipole expansion method reveal that the polarization conversion ratio of the meta-atoms is dependent on the interference of the formed multipoles. To validate the proposed strategy, a dual-wavelength achromatic metalens and a wavelength-multiplexed holographic metasurface operating at the infrared thermal imaging band are designed. Our design strategy can find widespread applications in metasurfaces where multiple objectives are required to be realized.

Near-unity asymmetric transmission of linearly polarized light with high Q-factor based on the coherent coupling of dual resonances in bilayer dielectric chiral metasurfaces

This report shows that near-unity asymmetric transmission (AT) of linearly polarized light with high Q-factor can be realized in bilayer dielectric chiral metasurfaces, the unit cell of which consists of silicon slab with rectangular holes on its both sides which are arranged perpendicularly to each other. The preceding work has revealed that the theoretical upper limit of the AT is given as the amplitude reflection coefficient of background system without nanostructure, when a single resonance mainly contributes. If double resonances with overlapping spectral shapes concurrently contribute to the AT, however, their coherent coupling enables breaking the above upper limit and near-unity AT can be obtained. As one of the contributing resonances in the metasurface is quasi-BIC, the resultant AT has also high Q-factor in addition to the near-unity value. Thus, the presented photonic system exhibits highly efficient asymmetric third-harmonic generation behavior, which has the efficiency ratio between forward and backward pumping in the orders from several hundreds to thousands. High-Q near-unity AT shown in this work will find practical applications for direction-dependent nonlinear frequency conversion, information processing, optical sensing, and polarization multiplexing.

Multifunctional dual stimuli-triggered metadevice in terahertz regime

Multifunctional metadevices have garnered substantial attention because of their optical characteristics for operation within the terahertz regime. However, metasurfaces have unalterable geometrical configurations that represent a limitation in this context, thus necessitating dynamic adjustability of the structures. In this study, a development strategy is used that involves a dual stimuli-responsive programmable terahertz metamaterial based on indium oxide (In2O3). When exposed to light irradiation, the resonant frequency of this metamaterial undergoes a red shift of up to approximately 100 GHz when compared with the original resonant frequency. The processed terahertz signal is then used for binary coding as well as computer color coding through two active stimulation methods. This dual stimuli-triggered metamaterial concept can be extended to other frequency bands and thus offers a promising route toward electromagnetic information processing applications.

Testing the one-way steering with any bipartite entangled state: a numerical simulation with electrons on liquid Helium

Quantum entanglement is one of the basic features of the quantum system, and it can be divided into three kinds: non-steering, one-way steering, and multi-way steering. The multi-way steering is mutual for the bipartite system, i.e., Alice can steer Bob and Bob can also steer Alice. While one-way steering is asymmetrical, it provides various potential applications for quantum information processing. The existence of one-way steering has been experimentally tested with certain specific bipartite entangled states, typically such as the optical Werner states. Here we show that any bipartite entangled state can be experimentally determined to be one-way steering or not by testing the relevant linear steering inequality. By constructing the proper unitary operations, we show that the required joint projective measurement can be performed for the tests. Specifically, we demonstrate the experimental feasibility of the proposal with a typical solid-state experimental platform, i.e., electrons trapped on liquid Helium, by applying the electron trap and microwave driving techniques.

Thermally generated magnonic spin currents in a polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

Rare-earth iron garnets (REIGs) are the benchmark systems for magnonics, including the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE). While most research has focused on single-crystalline REIGs on complimentary garnet substrates, moving to more, cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible substrates is important to integrate REIG thin films with existing technology. In this regard, we grow a 130 nm-thick polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) film on the Si/SiO2 substrate and investigate the temperature-dependent LSSE. Interestingly, the polycrystalline GdIG film exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature which is induced by tensile in-plane (IP)-strain originating from the thermal-expansion mismatch between the GdIG film and the substrate during rapid thermal annealing. Further, a spin-reorientation transition from the out-of-plane IP direction below TS = 180 K is observed. Additionally, the film reveals a magnetic compensation temperature, TComp, of ≈240 K. The LSSE voltage not only demonstrates a sign-inversion around TComp, but also shows noticeable changes around TS. As compared to a single-crystalline GdIG film, the lower LSSE voltage for the polycrystalline GdIG is attributed to the higher effective magnetic anisotropy and enhanced magnon scattering at the grain boundaries. Our study not only paves the way for the cost-effective growth of CMOS-compatible REIG-based systems with PMA for magnonic memory and information processing applications, but also highlights the fact that the spincaloritronic and spin-insulatronic properties of the polycrystalline REIGs follow those of their single-crystalline counterparts with reduced spin-to-charge conversion efficiency through LSSE which can be tuned further by controlling the average gran size and interface engineering.

Squeezing and entangling two microwave modes of electro-optomechanical systems with two driving lasers

We propose an effective scheme to generate the squeezed vacuum states of two microwave fields, bipartite and genuine tripartite entanglement in a compound four-mode electro-optomechanical system with two driving lasers of different amplitudes. We find that two microwave fields can be squeezed simultaneously when the effective coupling constants between mechanical oscillator and two microwave fields are chosen appropriately. In particular, the squeezing of one microwave mode can be larger than 3 dB even at high temperature. We also find that bipartite and genuine tripartite entanglement can be generated in this system which are robust against thermal fluctuations. Our scheme may have potential applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology.

Role of S-Vacancy Concentration in Air Oxidation of WS2 Single Crystals.

Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a class of two-dimensional materials with potential applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, valleytronics, and quantum information processing. Understanding their stability under ambient conditions is critical for determining their in-air processability during device fabrication and for predicting their long-term device performance stability. While the effects of environmental conditions (i.e., oxygen, moisture, and light) on TMD degradation are well-acknowledged, the role of defects in driving their oxidation remains unclear. We conducted a systematic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study on WS2 single crystals with different surface S-vacancy concentrations formed via controlled argon sputtering. Oxidation primarily occurred at defect concentrations ≥ 10%, resulting in stoichiometric WO3 formation, while a stable surface was observed at lower concentrations. Theoretical calculations informed us that single S-vacancies do not spontaneously oxidize, while defect pairing at high vacancy concentrations facilitates O2 dissociation and subsequent oxide formation. Our XPS results also point to vacancy-related structural and electrostatic disorder as the main origin for the p-type characteristics that persists even after oxidation. Despite the complex interplay between defects and TMD oxidation processes, our work unveils scientifically informed guidance for working effectively with TMDs.

Dissipative stabilization of high-dimensional GHZ states for neutral atoms

High-dimensional quantum entanglement characterizes the entanglement of quantum systems within a larger Hilbert space, introducing more intricate and complex correlations among the entangled particles' states. The high-dimensional Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state, symbolic of this type of entanglement, is of significant importance in various quantum information processing applications. This study proposes integrating a neutral atom platform with quantum reservoir engineering to generate a high-dimensional GHZ state deterministically. Leveraging the advantages of neutral atoms in a modified unconventional Rydberg pumping mechanism, combined with controlled dissipation, we achieve a three-dimensional GHZ state with a fidelity surpassing 99% through multiple pump and dissipation cycles. This innovative approach paves the way for experimentally feasible, deterministic preparation of high-dimensional GHZ states in Rydberg atom systems, thereby advancing the capabilities of quantum information processing.

Extreme single-excitation subradiance from two-band Bloch oscillations in atomic arrays

Atomic arrays provide an important quantum optical platform with photon-mediated dipole–dipole interactions that can be engineered to realize key applications in quantum information processing. A major obstacle for such applications is the fast decay of the excited states. By controlling two-band Bloch oscillations of single excitation in an atomic array under an external magnetic field, here we show that exotic subradiance can be realized and maintained with orders of magnitude longer than the spontaneous decay time in atomic arrays with the finite size. The key finding is to show a way for preventing the wavepacket of excited states scattering into the dissipative zone inside the free space light cone, which therefore leads to the excitation staying at a subradiant state for an extremely long decay time. We show that such operation can be achieved by introducing a spatially linear potential from the external magnetic field in the atomic arrays and then manipulating interconnected two-band Bloch oscillations along opposite directions. Our results also point out the possibility of controllable switching between superradiant and subradiant states, which leads to potential applications in quantum storage.

Identifying families of multipartite states with non-trivial local entanglement transformations

The study of state transformations by spatially separated parties with local operations assisted by classical communication (LOCC) plays a crucial role in entanglement theory and its applications in quantum information processing. Transformations of this type among pure bipartite states were characterized long ago and have a revealing theoretical structure. However, it turns out that generic fully entangled pure multipartite states cannot be obtained from nor transformed to any inequivalent fully entangled state under LOCC. States with this property are referred to as isolated. Nevertheless, multipartite states are classified into families, the so-called SLOCC classes, which possess very different properties. Thus, the above result does not forbid the existence of particular SLOCC classes that are free of isolation, and therefore, display a rich structure regarding LOCC convertibility. In fact, it is known that the celebrated n-qubit GHZ and W states give particular examples of such classes and in this work, we investigate this question in general. One of our main results is to show that the SLOCC class of the 3-qutrit totally antisymmetric state is isolation-free as well. Actually, all states in this class can be converted to inequivalent states by LOCC protocols with just one round of classical communication (as in the GHZ and W cases). Thus, we consider next whether there are other classes with this property and we find a large set of negative answers. Indeed, we prove weak isolation (i.e., states that cannot be obtained with finite-round LOCC nor transformed by one-round LOCC) for very general classes, including all SLOCC families with compact stabilizers and many with non-compact stabilizers, such as the classes corresponding to the n-qunit totally antisymmetric states for n≥4. Finally, given the pleasant feature found in the family corresponding to the 3-qutrit totally antisymmetric state, we explore in more detail the structure induced by LOCC and the entanglement properties within this class.

All-optical ultrafast polarization switching with nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces.

Optical switching has important applications in optical information processing, optical computing, and optical communications. The long-term pursuit of optical switch is to achieve short switching time and large modulation depth. Among various mechanisms, all-optical switching based on Kerr effect represents a promising solution. However, it is usually difficult to compromise both switching time and modulation depth of a Kerr-type optical switch. To circumvent this constraint, symmetry selective polarization switching via second-harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear crystals has been attracting scientists' attention. Here, we demonstrate SHG-based all-optical ultrafast polarization switching by using geometric phase controlled nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces. A switching time of hundreds of femtoseconds and a modulation depth of 97% were experimentally demonstrated. The function of dual-channel all-optical switching was also demonstrated on a metasurface, which consists of spatially variant meta-atoms. The nonlinear metasurface proposed here represents an important platform for developing all-optical ultrafast switches and would benefit the area of optical information processing.

Efficient bosonic nonlinear phase gates

Continuous-variable (CV) quantum information processing harnesses versatile experimental tools that leverage the power of infinite-dimensional oscillators controlled by a single qubit. Increasingly available elementary Rabi gates have been proposed as a resource for implementing universal CV gates, but the requirement of many weak, non-commuting gates is a bottleneck in scaling up such an approach. In this study, we propose a resource-efficient technique using Fourier expansion to implement arbitrary non-linear phase gates in a single oscillator. This method reduces the number of sequentially required gates exponentially. These gates represented by cubic, quartic, and other arbitrary nonlinear potentials have applications in CV quantum information processing with infinite-dimensional oscillators controlled by a single qubit. Our method outperforms previous approaches and enables the experimental realization of a wide range of applications, including the development of bosonic quantum sensors, simulations, and computation using trapped ions and superconducting circuits.

Enhanced magnon blockade in a magnomechanical system

Magnon blockade is one of the effective methods for realizing single magnon sources which have great potential application in quantum information processing and quantum computing. To enhance single-magnon blockade effect, we introduce a two-magnon driving to the magnomechanical system, which is used to form the multipath destructive interference. Our result shows that both the conventional magnon blockade (CMB) and unconventional magnon blockade (UMB) can be achieved due to nonlinear term of the magnon-mechanical oscillator and magnetic parametric amplification term(MPA) induced by two-magnon driving. By setting certain parameters of MPA, we combine the effect of CMB and UMB. As a result, the single-magnon blockade effect is enhanced, and the disadvantage of rapid oscillations of the time-delay second-order correlation function g (2)(τ) with UMB is overcome, which makes high time resolution not necessary in the detection of second-order correlation function.

Hybridized magnonic materials for THz frequency applications

The capability of magnons to hybridize and strongly couple with diverse excitations offers a promising avenue for realizing and controlling emergent properties that hold significant potential for applications in devices, circuits, and information processing. In this Letter, we present recent theoretical and experimental developments in magnon-based hybrid systems, focusing on the combination of magnon excitation in an antiferromagnet with other excitations, namely, plasmons in a topological insulator, phonons in a 2D antiferromagnetic (2D AFM), and photons. The existence of THz frequency magnons, plasmons, and phonons makes magnon-based hybrid systems particularly appealing for high-operating-speed devices. In this context, we explore several directions to advance magnon hybrid systems, including strong coupling between a surface plasmon and magnon polariton in a topological insulator /AFM bilayer, a giant spin Nernst effect induced by magnon–phonon coupling in 2D AFMs, and control of magnon–photon coupling using spin torque.

Triple electromagnetically induced transparency generated slow light for multiple carbon nanotube resonators

Hybrid spin-mechanical systems offer a promising platform for advancing quantum science and technology. However, practical implementation of applications within these hybrid quantum systems demands the seamless integration of supplementary physical components. In this context, we present a proposal for a multi-mode spin-mechanical setup, featuring the utilization of three-mode coupling nanomechanical carbon nanotube (CNT) resonators. These resonators interact with each other via a phase-dependent phonon-exchange mechanism, which is coupled to the same nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Based on the modulation of the phonon–phonon coupling phase and leveraging the triple Fano-like resonance phenomenon, a tripling of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) becomes achievable within the system. This tripling is accompanied by swift dispersion, leading to a subtle advancement or delay in outcomes. The phenomenon of triple Fano-like resonance, alongside the resulting triple EIT, engenders noteworthy slow-to-fast and fast-to-slow light effects, which is theoretically demonstrated in CNT resonators, with both identical and distinct frequencies. The findings underscore that CNT resonators with varying frequencies can evoke a more pronounced transition in the slow–fast–slow and fast–slow–fast light effects. This study lays the foundation for the application of phonon-mediated optical information storage and processing.
