Second-Order Terminal Sliding-Mode Speed Controller for Induction Motor Drives With Nonlinear Control Gain

For the high-end industrial application of induction motors (IMs), the speed controller is expected to possess strong torque rejection capability to suppress the speed fluctuation. To accomplish this goal, this paper proposes a second-order terminal sliding-mode (SO-TSM) speed controller with nonlinear control gain. First, a SO-TSM manifold is designed to introduce the convergence trajectory without speed overshoot. Second, an integral term control law is constructed to compensate external disturbance with the anti-windup mechanism. The analysis of convergence trajectory shows that the torque rejection capability of the studied method is represented by the gain value of the integral term. Thus, the studied nonlinear control gain can improve the torque rejection capability and suppress the chattering simultaneously. Finally, the experimental results from a 3.7kW IM test bench reveal the strong torque rejection capability of the studied method.

Design of Sliding Mode Control Strategy for Induction Motor

Abstract: The design and application of sliding mode control (SMC) techniques for an induction motor are the main topics of this research article. The main goal is to compare the performance of three different sliding surfaces and a proportionalintegral-derivative (PID) controller with other SMC controllers. The study examines how the PID and SMC controllers react to a variety of operational circumstances, such as load disturbances and parameter changes. The simulation results show the benefits and drawbacks of each controller, giving important information about how SMC approaches can be used for induction motor control. This study adds to the body of knowledge in the field of control systems by offering a thorough examination of various sliding mode control schemes for induction motor applications.

Development of a Novel High Strength Aluminum-Cerium Based Rotor Alloy for Electric Vehicle Induction Motor Applications

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">To increase vehicle range, light weighting of electric vehicles has been extensively researched and implemented by using aluminum intensive solutions. With regards to traction motors, aluminum alloys that have a desired combination of high electrical conductivity and strength are required for high power output and efficiency. In this research, a novel Al-Ce based alloy, with minor additions of Si and Mg for strengthening, was investigated in different heat treatment tempers to maximize mechanical properties while maintaining a high electrical conductivity. This new alloy system appears to have addressed the classic conundrum of the inverse relationship of mechanical performance verses electrical conductivity for traditional aluminum alloy systems. The results suggest that the Al-Ce-Si-Mg alloy had yield strength in excess of 120 MPa and electrical conductivity of at least 50 %IACS in the T5 and T6 conditions. Simulations of a squirrel cage induction machine show that this combination of properties resulted in similar motor performance to other rotor Al alloys. As a result, the Al-Ce-Si-Mg alloy is a promising alternative to the near pure Al or Cu-based alloys that are currently used in induction motor rotor castings.</div></div>

Regression Based Performance Analysis and Fault Detection in Induction Motors by Using Deep Learning Technique

The recent improvements related to the area of electric locomotive, power electronics, assembly processes and manufacturing of machines have increased the robustness and reliability of induction motors. Regardless of the increased availability, the application of induction motors in many fields alleges the need for operating state supervision and condition monitoring. In other words, fault identification at the initial stage helps make appropriate control decisions, influencing product quality as well as providing safety. Inspired by these demands, this work proposes a regression based modeling for the analysis of performance in induction motors. In this approach, the feature extraction process is combined with classification for efficient fault detection. Deep Belief Network (DBN) stacked with multiple Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) is exploited for the robust diagnosis of faults with the adoption of training process. The influences of harmonics over induction motors are identified and the losses are mitigated. The simulation of the suggested approach and its comparison with traditional approaches are executed. An overall accuracy of 99.5% is obtained which in turn proves the efficiency of DBN in detecting faults.

Evolution of Controllers for the Speed Control in Thyristor Fed Induction Motor Drive

Induction Motors (IMs) are now becoming the pillar of almost all the motoringapplications related to the industry and household. The practical applications of IMs usually requireconstant motoring speed. As a result, different types of control systems for IM's speed controlling havebeen shaped. One of the important techniques is the utilization of thyristor fed drive. Although, thethyristor fed induction motor drive (TFIMD) offers stable speed performance, the practical speed controldemand is much more precise. Hence, this drive system utilizes additional controllers to attain precisespeed for practical applications. This paper offers a detailed review of the controllers utilized with thethyristor fed IM drive in the past few decades to achieve good speed control performance. The clear intentof the paper is to provide a comprehensible frame of the pros and cons of the existing controllers developedfor the TFIMD speed control requirements.

Saturated PI Optimization Induction Motor with Integral

A high precision feedback control system with a given excitation current speed vector modulation and an integral saturated PI regulator is proposed for multi-scenario application of induction motor with wide speed and load in machine tool processing. Considering the characteristics of the variable range of voltage and current of the induction motor, the constraints of the excitation current of the motor and the slip frequency and other factors, the angular velocity vector of the induction motor, the given excitation current and the given speed variable are extracted as the adjusting variables of the feedback speed loop, and the transformation is carried out in combination with the relationship between the speed and the voltage of the modulation vector. The speed, torque, flux and three-phase stator current variables of the induction motor under the condition of constant torque, constant speed and torque and speed variables change were observed. By comparing the performance improvement of the proposed method with that of the conventional method, the effectiveness of the proposed method and the optimization characteristics of parameters were verified.

Harmonic generation of variable speed drive under complex-voltage unbalance conditions

Efficiency in the industrial sector is a priority when seeking to minimize production costs and reduction in losses. Harmonic generation and associated losses need to be treated carefully with broad implementation of variable speed induction motor applications. The effect of these induced losses can add up to a significant loss. This study uses statistical tools alongside synthesized models to deduce and compare outcomes from regulated and unregulated converters in which harmonics may be triggered by switching algorithm of modern switch-mode power supplies and other inductive loads attached to supply bus system. These harmonics accumulate over time due to losses propagating through connected equipment when changes occur on the bus system. In this regard, results obtained from investigating and comparing three original equipment manufacturer variable speed drives that were exposed to voltage unbalance and complex harmonic conditions are presented in this study. A conclusion accomplished from the investigation and comparison suggests that generation of 6-pulse uncontrolled rectifier losses is negligible. Experimental validation confirms that unregulated 6-pulse converter produces on average more harmonics compared to the regulated converter of standard as recommended in guideline to permissible harmonic tolerance.

Ethernet Packet to USB Data Transfer Bridge ASIC with Modbus Transmission Control Protocol Based on FPGA Development Kit

This paper proposes an Ethernet packet transformation and transmission architecture between Modbus transmission control protocol (Modbus TCP) and universal serial bus (USB) 3.0 developed with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development kit. The proposed architecture is used to complete packet transformation and transmission between Ethernet and USB 3.0 for application in induction motor (IM) control. The Ethernet receiver receives and analyses Modbus TCP packets and sends the source address, destination address, IP header, and Modbus TCP header to the register to verify the correctness of the packet. The Modbus TCP packet is stored in static random access memory and awaits access through a USB 3.0 module. An FPGA development kit (Intel DE10-Standard) is used for functional verification. The measured results show that the latency, throughput, and dynamic power are 18.845 μs, 950.31 Mbps, and 142.17 mW, respectively, at a voltage of 1.8 V and an operating frequency of 125 MHz. The main advantage is that the proposed Ethernet and USB bridge performs high throughput and short latency with FPGA development kit and that an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is provided with low power consumption. The robustness and convenience of the proposed ASIC are especially advantageous. The motivation is to resolve an existing problem that Ethernet and USB operate on different platforms.

A Novel space vector modulated DTC scheme of induction motor drive with a single PI controller for electric vehicles

Facilitating instantaneous torque and smooth speed of Electric vehicle (EV) largely relies on modulation scheme employed and type of controller used for motor drive system. The DTC-SVM (Space Vector Modulation) approach with two PI controllers has an excellent steady state and transient response. However, there is still a need to reduce stator current and torque ripples in induction motor for application in Electric vehicle. This paper presents a new approach to minimize stator current harmonics, torque ripple of an induction motor drive with appropriate gain value for torque PI controller. Good performance of the induction motor drive is achieved using a single PI controller. Both flux and torque are controlled effectively with less torque ripple. In this study, torque and current ripples are obtained at full, one-half and one-fourth of the rated speeds at rated torque value. This work analyzes the transient operation of the drive for unit step change in command torque at various rotor speeds. Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) of the drive at constant switching frequency is presented. Modeling and Simulation is performed in the stationary reference frame theory. The performance is observed during steady state and transient operations. The settling time of torque responses and stator currents are obtained during transient conditions. Torque ripples are obtained during steady state. A comparison with DTC-SVM with two PI controllers for the same Torque commands is well understood. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in the motor input current at different reference fluxes are tabulated for classical, two PI controllers and a single PI controller. The proposed DTC-SVM scheme with single PI controller is found to be robust with good steady state and transient characteristics with less settling time and is validated with flux vector trajectories.

Al Alloys and Casting Processes for Induction Motor Applications in Battery-Powered Electric Vehicles: A Review

With the rapid expansion of battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) in the automotive industry, research interest in lightweight Al alloys as well as their casting processes and applications has increased considerably. The substitution of castable aluminum alloys with superior strengths and electrical conductivity for copper reduces the weight and size of electric induction motors, and improves the energy efficiency and driving range of the BEVs. The present article was intended to give a general introduction into the common cast Al aluminum alloys and their relevant processes, as well as to motivate the development of high strength and conductive Al alloys for the practical realization of Al applications in the motors of the BEVs. A number of cast alloy systems containing Cu, Si, Ni, Mg, Fe, and Ti were evaluated, in comparison to nanostructured wrought Al alloys. The conventional casting processes suitable for Al alloys, high pressure die casting, squeeze casting, and sand casting were described. Strengthening mechanisms including solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, dislocation accumulation strengthening, and grain boundary strengthening were presented. The phenomenon of electrical conduction for Al alloys was outlined. The mechanical properties and electrical properties of the recently developed Al alloys for casting and deformation processes were comprehensively listed and critically reviewed in association with microstructural characteristics.

Smoothed Kalman MRAS observer for speed sensorless indirect vector controlled induction motor drives

This paper proposes a modified Kalman filter algorithm based on fixed lag smoothing which can be used to estimate the rotor speed and flux of three phase induction motor. The behaviour of a typical extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is influenced by the process and measurement error covariance matrices. In EKF, these matrices are chosen by trial and error method and have to be varied according to the varying operating conditions of the motor. In this paper a smoothing-based extended Kalman filter (SKF) algorithm which uses additional data points for estimation is proposed. Since additional data is used, the algorithm is able to give a better estimate, with the same values of process and measurement error covariance matrices. The performance of the proposed algorithm is explored for sensorless indirect vector control application of three-phase induction motor. Finally, in order to validate the superiority of this algorithm, it is compared with the performance of EKF algorithm for various reference speeds in real-time.

Relevance For the operation of a closed-loop sensorless electric drive as part of an electrical complex, it is necessary to ensure adequate restoration of the vector of state variables of an induction motor using a customizable mathematical model in the control system. The accuracy of restoring the state variable vector depends on two factors. The first factor is the mathematical description of the substitution circuit of an asynchronous motor by a system of differential equations with certain assumptions that reliably reflects the physical processes occurring in an asynchronous motor. Used in the electric drive control system, T- and L-shaped equivaent circuits of an asynchronous motor, described by a system of differential equations in a customizable mathematical model, are universal and allow simulating the behavior of an asynchronous motor in all operating modes: «start», «load surge», «load shedding», «reverse», «stop», which is a sufficient condition for their use without modifications within the framework of this article. The second factor — the coefficients in the system of differential equations with some error correspond to the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of an asynchronous motor. In turn, the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of an asynchronous motor are unique for each motor and cannot be used in a system of differential equations without their refinement, i.e. no identification process. There are several types of identification of the electrical parameters of an induction motor: by the experience of idling and short circuit, by catalog data, by induction motor attenuation with a locked rotor of an induction motor, and others. The described methods for identifying parameters in most cases require the decommissioning of an asynchronous motor and conducting separate experimental studies, after which the electrical parameters in the equivalent circuit are considered constant and unchanged during operation. It is known that when an asynchronous motor is heated during operation, the active resistances of the stator and rotor circuits change. The inductance of the main magnetization circuit, stator and rotor circuits vary depending on the shape of the supply voltage and the operating modes of the asynchronous motor. Changing these parameters means that the restoration of the state variable vector will occur with a larger error. Given the above, the development of a methodology for adaptive identification of the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of an asynchronous motor during operation, without decommissioning and shutting down the entire electrical complex, is an urgent scientific and practically significant task. Aim of research Development and experimental study of a method for determining the electrical parameters of the stator winding in steady-state operation modes without decommissioning and stopping the electrical complex. Research methods Systems of nonlinear equations, iterative procedures, Newton's method, numerical methods, state space method, optimization methods. Results A method of adaptive identification of the electrical parameters of the stator winding replacement circuit in steady-state operation based on the power balance has developed and experimentally tested, which allows for accurate estimation of the parameters of the stator winding replacement circuit during induction motor operation. The developed technique in the future, with the expansion of the mathematical apparatus, will allow determining the parameters of both the stator and rotor windings of the induction motor when the electric drive is operating as part of an electrical complex. The practical application of open woundrotor induction motor is not possible, therefore this article is of a research nature and is intended only for experimental confirmation of the operation of the technique.

Models and Methods of Designing Linear Electric Motors for Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Applications

Through substitution of rotating induction motor drives with linear ones, one can enhance the reliability and decrease the materials capacity of electrical equipment utilized by the non-ferrous metals industry. At the same time, each particular case requires a feasibility study to justify the application of the linear induction motor. Such feasibility study is based on the key technical data of the unit obtained through mathematical modelling. The authors carried out an analysis of the existing linear induction motor models. The aim of this research is to develop a number of analytical design models. This paper looks at flat double-sided linear induction motors with a short and long secondary element. Possible applications are described for such linear induction motors in the non-ferrous metals industry. A design approach and a mathematical model were developed to calculate the magnetic vector potential and the pull force of the linear induction motor with a long secondary element. An accurate solution for the magnetic vector potential was found through Fourier transformation, which, together with the expression for the pull force, provides a design model of the motor. The model parameters were chosen based on the desired mechanical performance of the motor. A linear induction motor with a long secondary element was designed for the force of 1,000 N and the speed of 2–3 m/sec. The paper describes the modelling results, as well as the technical data of the motor. Alternative design models of the motor were compared. The authors describe a design approach and a mathematical model for calculating the magnetic vector potential and the pull force of the linear induction motor with a short secondary element. The Bubnov-Galerkin method was used to find an approximate solution for the magnetic vector potential. On the basis of that solution, a linear induction motor with a short secondary element was designed for the force of 528 N and the speed of 2–3 m/sec. This paper describes some economic aspects related to the adoption of linear induction motors. It is pointed out that the low probability of failure characteristic of linear induction motors helps lower the losses related to the emergency shutdowns and unscheduled maintenance. High torque and excessive vibration on the induction motors under special voltage fluctuation conditions

Purpose Voltage fluctuation (flicker) is a power quality disturbance that can produce several undesirable effects on industrial equipment. This paper aims to present the methodology and results of investigations undertaken to examine the speed and torque of an induction motor (IM) under voltage fluctuation conditions. Design/methodology/approach The IM response to different characteristics of voltage fluctuations is presented. It will be shown that under a special condition the IM torque can even reach two times the rated torque. To show how this occurs, a qualitative discussion is given on the motor response by linearized equations. Findings The small-signal analysis was used to determine the frequency which leads to maximum speed fluctuations. It was shown that, if the motor is excited with a modulation frequency (resonant frequency) which is one of its natural frequencies (modes), the mode will act as a fluctuating amplifier and greatly increase the amplitude of torque and speed fluctuations. Sensitivity analysis is also carried out to evaluate the influence of motor parameters on the resonance frequency. The results show that the resonance frequency is not affected at all by the changes in magnetizing reactance. This has been shown that magnetic saturation does not have any impact on the resonance frequency. The most effective parameters are rotor and stator resistances. Originality/value With the increasing popularity and use of arc furnace loads in the metallurgy industry and due to the wide application of large IMs in the industry, it is possible that the frequency of torque pulsation locates near a natural frequency and then will create an oscillation with a large magnitude, potentially leading to accelerated fatigue or severe damage of shaft. However, if this phenomenon occurs in industries, the resonance frequency must be filtered from the input voltage. Experimental results on a 1.1 kW, 380 V, 50 Hz, 2 pole IM are used to validate the accuracy of simulation results.

Analisis Pengaruh Sudut Penyalaan TRIAC terhadap Pengaturan Kecepatan Motor Induksi Satu Fasa Menggunakan Cycloconverter

ABSTRACTA single-phase induction motor is one type of electric motor that is most widely used in everyday’s life, especially for running small loads. The application of this single phase induction motor is not only in households but also in shops, shopping centers, and industry. In its operation, single-phase induction motors can be operated with constant speed and variable speed. The operation of a single-phase induction motor at a constant speed can be done by inputting the nominal voltage and frequency of the motor. Meanwhile, the operation of a single-phase induction motor with varying speeds can be done by adjusting the input frequency of the motor. In this study, an induction motor speed control was carried out using a cycloconverter to regulate the speed of a single-phase induction motor by changing the input frequency of the motor into three variations, namely f / 1, f / 2 and f / 3 at the base frequency of 50 Hz. The cycloconverter switching was designed using TRIAC and then a study was carried out on the effect of the TRIAC’s firing angle on the speed, voltage and output power of the motor by varying firing angles by 0?, 30?, 45?, 60? and 90?. The result show, it is found that increasing the firing angle, the motor output voltage decrease, the motor output power also decrease, except at the angle of 60 ? rises then at the angle of 90 decrease again, while the motor speed increases at the same frequency.
