Seaweeds as Source of Bioactive Pigments with Neuroprotective and/or Anti-Neurodegenerative Activities: Astaxanthin and Fucoxanthin.

The marine kingdom is an important source of a huge variety of scaffolds inspiring the design of new drugs. The complex molecules found in the oceans present a great challenge to organic and medicinal chemists. However, the wide variety of biological activities they can display is worth the effort. In this article, we present an overview of different seaweeds as potential sources of bioactive pigments with activity against neurodegenerative diseases, especially due to their neuroprotective effects. Along with a broad introduction to seaweed as a source of bioactive pigments, this review is especially focused on astaxanthin and fucoxanthin as potential neuroprotective and/or anti-neurodegenerative agents. PubMed and SciFinder were used as the main sources to search and select the most relevant scientific articles within the field.

Caffeoylquinic acid profiling: comparative analysis in yerba mate, Indian camphorweed, and stevia extracts with emphasis on the influence of brewing conditions and cold storage in yerba mate infusion.

Herbal infusions exhibit diverse pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antihypertensive, and antineurodegenerative activities, which can be attributed to the high content of phenolic compounds (e.g., caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs)). In this study, we used ultraperformance liquid chromatography to determine the content of CQAs in the methanolic extracts of model herbs, namely, yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), and Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica (L.) Less.). The results revealed that yerba mate had the highest total CQA content (108.05 ± 1.12 mg/g of dry weight). Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of brewing conditions and storage at 4 °C under dark and light conditions on the antioxidant property and total phenolic and CQA contents of a yerba mate infusion. The analysis of the yerba mate infusions prepared with different steeping times, dried leaf weights, and water temperatures revealed that the amount of extracted CQAs was maximized (∼175 mg/150 mL) when 6 g of dried leaves were steeped in hot water for 10 min. A total of 10-day refrigerated storage resulted in no significant changes in the antioxidant activity and total phenolic and CQA contents of an infusion kept in a brown container (dark). However, the antioxidant properties and total phenolic and CQA contents were negatively affected when kept in a clear container, suggesting the detrimental effect of light exposure. Our study provides practical recommendations for improving the preparation and storage of herbal infusions, thus catering to the needs of consumers, food scientists, and commercial producers. Moreover, it is the first study of the influence of light exposure on the content of crucial quality attributes within plant-based beverages.

S-Triazine Derivatives Functionalized with Alkylating 2-Chloroethylamine Fragments as Promising Antimicrobial Agents: Inhibition of Bacterial DNA Gyrases, Molecular Docking Studies, and Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity.

The spectrum of biological properties of s-triazine derivatives is broad and includes anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and anti-neurodegenerative activities, among others. The s-triazine molecule, due to the possibility of substituting three substituents, offers many opportunities to obtain hybrid compounds with a wide variety of activities. A group of 1,3,5 triazine derivatives containing a dipeptide, 2-ethylpiperazine, and a methoxy group as substituents was screened for their antimicrobial activity. An in vitro study was conducted on pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus, B. subtilis, and M. luteus), yeasts (C. albicans), and filamentous fungi (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, F. solani, and P. citrinum) via microdilution in broth, and the results were compared with antibacterial (Streptomycin) and antifungal (Ketoconazole and Nystatin) antibiotics. Several s-triazine analogues have minimal inhibitory concentrations lower than the standard. To confirm the inhibitory potential of the most active compounds against gyrases E. coli and S. aureus, a bacterial gyrases inhibition assay, and molecular docking studies were performed. The most active s-triazine derivatives contained the -NH-Trp(Boc)-AlaOMe, -NH-Asp(OtBu)-AlaOMe, and -NH-PheOMe moieties in their structures.

Secondary Metabolites of Bird's Nest Fungi: Chemical Structures and Biological Activities.

Bird's nest fungi, a general term for species in the family Nidulariaceae, are named for their fruiting bodies that resemble bird's nests. Two of their members, Cyathus stercoreus (Schw.) de Toni. and Cyathus striatus Will. ex Pers., are known as medicinal fungi in Chinese medicine. Bird's nest fungi produce a variety of secondary metabolites that provide natural materials for screening and developing medicinal compounds. This review presents a systematic summary of the literature on the secondary metabolites of bird's nest fungi up to January 2023, including 185 compounds, mainly cyathane diterpenoids, with prominently characterized antimicrobial and antineurodegenerative activities. Our work aims to advance our understanding of bird's nest fungi and support studies on their natural product chemistry, pharmacology, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.

Ketapang (Terminalia catappa L.): Potential utilization as foodstuffs and traditional medicine

Indonesian local people use Terminalia catappa L. (TC) as a shade, traditional medicine and vegetables. This study aims to examine the utilization and bioactivity of TC. The research method uses online library research, especially from Google Scholar, using the keywords TC, uses TC and bioactivity of TC. The information obtained was synthesized so as to explain the botany and the use of TC in a comprehensive manner. The TC leaves and seeds can be used as food because they are rich in nutrients and mineral salts. TC seeds are carbohydrates, fats, saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids and mineral salts in the form of Calcium, Iron and Zinc. In traditional medicine, TC has been used to treat hypertension, hepatitis, colitis, depression and anti-aging. The bioactivity of TC such as anti-diabetes mellitus, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-neurodegenerative, anti-aging, hepatoprotective, anti-cancer, anti-depressant, anti-hypertensive, anti-ulcer and immunomodulatory activities. The potential of TC as an anti-neurodegenerative and anti-stress needs to be studied further as a new alternative in the treatment of nervous system disorders as well as a source of unsaturated fatty acids.

Eugenia uniflora L. fruit: A review on its Chemical Composition and Bioactivity

Abstract: The fruits (pitanga) of Eugenia uniflora L. (pitangueira) have pleasant sensory attributes, described as acid, sweet and exotic flavors, and high content of bioactive compounds with antioxidant effects. The botanical characteristics, nutritional, sensory and pharmaceutical properties of leaves and fruits of pitangueira have already been described in several publications, but the information available has never been systematized through a wide literature review such as that carried out in the present study.This study reveals that pitanga is a source of fibers, vitamins A and C, minerals, phenolic compounds and carotenoids. The phenolic compounds myricetin and quercetin, and the carotenoids lycopene, γ-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin are the fruit’s major compounds. Furthermore, in the essential oil of this fruit, compounds beneficial to health, such as oxygenated sesquiterpenes, were found. These compounds, in an in vitro study, were related to the reduction/reversal of damage caused by oxidative stress and inhibition of key enzymes linked to diabetes, dyslipidemia and Alzheimer's. Several studies reveal potential health benefits (antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-obesity, anti-proliferative and anti-neurodegenerative activities) resulting from bioactive compounds present in the leaf or fruit of the pitangueira. This review shows the promising use of this species for the prevention and control of different diseases and its potential for pharmaceutical and food purposes.

Phlomis fruticosa L. exerts in vitro antineurodegenerative and antioxidant activities and induces prooxidant effect in glioblastoma cell line.

Despite the significant advances in drug development we are witnessing the inability of health systems to combat both neurodegenerative diseases and cancers, especially glioblastoma. Hence, natural products are comprehensively studied in order to provide novel therapeutic options. This study aimed to explore anti-neurodegenerative and anti-glioblastoma potential of extract of Phlomis fruticosa L. using in vitro model systems. It was found that the methanol extract of P. fruticosa was able to efficiently reduce activities of enzymes linked to neurodegenerative disease including acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase and tyrosinase. Furthermore, P. fruticosa extract has shown excellent antioxidant potential, as evidenced by six different methods. Analysis of cytotoxic effect of P. fruticosa extract on A172 glioblastoma cell line revealed that the concentration of the extract necessary for 50 % inhibition of A172 growth (IC50) was 710 μg/mL. The extract did not induce changes in proliferation and morphology of A172 glioblastoma cells. On the other side, production of ROS was increased in A172 cells treated with the extract. Observed cytotoxic effect of P. fruticosa extract might be based on increase in ROS generation upon treatment. Quantitative chemical analysis revealed the presence of twelve different polyphenols with the cis 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid being the most abundant. This study provided scientific evidence for further exploration of P. fruticosa as a promising natural anti-neurodegenerative therapeutic option.

Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Metabolism of Sennoside A, A Medicinal Plant-Derived Natural Compound.

Sennoside A (SA) is a natural dianthrone glycoside mainly from medicinal plants of Senna and Rhubarb, and used as a folk traditional irritant laxative and slimming health food. Accumulating evidences suggest that SA possesses numerous pharmacological properties, such as laxative, anti-obesity, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-neurodegenerative activities. These pharmacological effects lay the foundation for its potential application in treating a variety of diseases. However, numerous published studies suggest that a long-term use of SA in large doses may have some adverse effects, including the occurrence of melanosis coli and carcinogenesis of colon cancer, thereby limiting its clinical use. It remains to be established whether SA or its metabolites are responsible for the pharmacological and toxicity effects. In this review, the latest advances in the pharmacology, toxicology, and metabolism of SA were summarizedbased on its biological characteristics and mechanism.

Theoretical insights into the direct radical scavenging activities of 8-hydroxyquinoline: Mechanistic, thermodynamic and kinetic studies

A Density Functional Theory study of the mechanisms, thermodynamics and kinetics of some antiradical reactions of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) against •OH is reported. The radical adduct formation (RAF), hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer (SET) mechanisms are investigated. The results indicate that 8HQ is an efficient RAF-dependent direct •OH radical deactivator, in accordance with recent experimental findings that 8HQ is a potent scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ortho and para carbons to the hydroxyl group in 8HQ, not including the bridgehead carbon, are identified as highly favorable RAF sites in polar and nonpolar solvents. Interestingly, RAF via the para carbon is thermodynamically feasible, fast (with apparent rate constants 2.867 × 108 and 1.012 × 107M-1s-1 in water and benzene, respectively), and contributes over 70% of 8HQ’s antioxidant capacity. Our results support the viewpoint that direct ROS scavenging plays a key role in 8HQ’s anti-neurodegenerative activities.

BIOACTIVITIES OF GUETTARDA SPECIOSA L. EXTRACTS

Guettarda speciosa L. is a tree of the Rubiaceae family. G. specious has been used to treat diarrhea, abscesses, wounds, epilepsy, and malaria in ethnomedicinal systems. So far, there is no systematic review for the bioactivities of G. speciosa. Therefore, the purpose of this minireview is to analyze, summarize and document the reported bioactivities of G. speciosa. Major electronic databases (Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Semantic Scholar) were used to identify related studies from 1900 to January 2021. So far, in vivo and in vitro scientific data are available for the bioactivities of this plant species. Studies have reported that G. speciosa contains antidiarrheal, antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, antimalarial, antineurodegenerative, and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, no bioactive compound of G. speciosa has been isolated. This work will be useful for researchers interested in bioactivity and phytochemical researches.

In vitro hypoglycemic, antioxidant and antineurodegenerative activity of chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) leaves

Chokeberries (Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot have recently become one of the most popular and widely used berry fruits, and there are numerous studies dealing with the investigation of their chemical composition and biological activities. Unlike berries, chokeberry leaves were far less investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a bioactivity-based analysis of chokeberry leaves collected after berries were harvested. Chemical analysis of hydroethanolic chokeberry extract and its ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water fractions was performed. Antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and antineurodegenerative activities of the obtained samples were assessed by in vitro tests. The highest total phenolics content was found in n-butanol fraction (221.5 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dw). Fourteen compounds (six phenolic acids and eight flavonoids) were identified in the samples. Caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and quercetin glycosides were dominant phenolic compounds. The highest content of phenolic acids, as well as flavonoids, was recorded in n-butanol fraction (80.75 mg/g dw and 47.79 mg/g dw, respectively). This fraction was the most active in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Also, the n-butanol fraction was the most effective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and tyrosinase (TYR) enzymes. All samples showed a better inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase enzyme with inhibition concentrations IC50 = 4.21 - 9.22 μg/mL, than α-amylase enzymes (IC50 = 14.36 - 88.61 μg/mL). Pearson’s correlation between the content of individual phenolics and the results of biological tests was performed. Thus, hyperoside and isoquercitrin showed a significant correlation with DPPH and ABTS tests, caffeoylquinic acids with FRAP test, quercetin 3-O-vicianoside with β-carotene assay, hyperoside and isoquercitrin with α-amylase inhibition activity, and isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside with α-glucosidase inhibition assay. Considering the obtained results, chokeberry leaves represent a valuable natural source of phenolic compounds with promising potential for the development of new products with beneficial effects on human health.

Nitroxoline: a potent antimicrobial agent against multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

Antimicrobial resistance has become a prime global concern. An ability of the microbes to produce enzymes to destroy antimicrobial drugs is one of the well-known mechanisms underlying the resistance. 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) and derivatives were reported to exert diverse biological effects such as antimicrobial, antioxidant and antineurodegenerative activities. Herein, 8HQ (1), nitroxoline (NQ, 2) and 7-Br-8HQ (3) were investigated for antimicrobial activity against Enterobacteriaceae including extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing and carbapenemase-producing strains as well as the effect of metal ions. These compounds (1-3) displayed the great antimicrobial activity against fifty-eight bacterial isolates of Escherichia coli, Providencia rettgeri and Klebsiella pneumoniae, in which NQ (2) exerted the highest antimicrobial activity with a MIC50 of 42.04 μM (8 µg/mL) and MBC50 of 168.28 μM (32 µg/mL). The MIC values of NQ (2) and 7-Br-8HQ (3) were significantly increased in the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+. This finding reveals that NQ could be an effective compound to be further developed as an antimicrobial agent for combating Enterobacteriaceae infections.

Combating Neurodegenerative Diseases with the Plant Alkaloid Berberine: Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential.

: Neurodegenerative diseases are among the most serious health problems affecting millions of people worldwide. Such diseases are characterized by a progressive degeneration and / or death of neurons in the central nervous system. Currently, there are no therapeutic approaches to cure or even halt the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. During the last two decades, much attention has been paid to the neuroprotective and anti-neurodegenerative activities of compounds isolated from natural products with high efficacy and low toxicity. Accumulating evidence indicates that berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid isolated from traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, may act as a promising anti-neurodegenerative agent by inhibiting the activity of the most important pathogenic enzymes, ameliorating intracellular oxidative stress, attenuating neuroinflammation, triggering autophagy and protecting neurons against apoptotic cell death. This review attempts to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the therapeutic potential of berberine against neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms that underlie its effects on Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases.

Composition and biological activities of Libyan Salvia fruticosa Mill. and S. lanigera Poir. extracts

This study was aimed to analyze the chemical composition and biological activities of extracts of Salvia fruticosa and S. lanigera originated from Libya. Dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, ethanol and water extracts obtained from wild growing plants were analyzed for the composition using HPLC-DAD, which revealed presence of phenolic acids and flavonoids, mainly in alcoholic and water extracts. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as anti-oxidant activity using 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2.2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid diammonium salt (ABTS), ferric reducing anti-oxidant potential (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching (β-CB) assays were determined spectrophotometrically. Extracts of S. fruticosa exhibited stronger activity in all applied assays, especially ethanol extract in DPPH assay (IC50, 29.55 μg/mL) and in β-CB assay (85.11%). The ethanol and water extracts were selected for further investigation, because of their wide usage in phytotherapy. The extracts were screened for the antimicrobial activity against 11 bacteria (six Gram-negative and five Gram-positive) and seven fungi using microdillution method. Ethanol extracts showed stronger activity than water extracts, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria. Trichophyton mentagrophytes was the most sensitive to the water extract of S. lanigera (MIC, minimal inhibitory concentration and MFC, minimal fungicidal concentration, 8 mg/mL). Cytotoxic activity on human carcinoma cell line HCT-116 was determined by 3-(4.5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell viability assay, where only ethanol extract of S. fruticosa demonstrated certain activity (IC50, 375.96 μg/mL). The testing of anti-neurodegenerative activities of extracts showed better tyrosinase inhibiting effect (55.26–74.66%) than standard kojic acid (33.93–51.81%), while the extracts were less effective against acetylcholinesterase compared with standard galanthamine. According to the obtained results, S. fruticosa and S. lanigera originated from Libya have proved to be the promising source of natural compounds possessing a range of biological activities.

Use of Caenorhabditis elegans To Study the Potential Bioactivity of Natural Compounds.

There is growing need and interest in finding specific compounds in natural products that have health benefits. Despite ongoing efforts to discover such compounds, the scientific evidence lags behind the vision, and it is important to find an effective paradigm for discovering such compounds. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans offers a promising solution for studying the potential bioactivity and molecular mechanisms of natural compounds in vivo. This perspective discusses its use to study potential human health benefits, with focus on antioxidative, anti-aging, antimetabolic disorders (diabetes and obesity), and antineurodegenerative activities (Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease), with practical examples. Finally, future directions in using a C. elegans-based model for discovering bioactive compounds for health promotion are discussed.

Polyphenolic Content and Biological Activities of Post-Distillation Waste of Three Sage Species from the Republic of Macedonia

This research was aimed at investigating polyphenolic content, antioxidant and anti-neurodegenerative activities of post-distillation waste extracts of Macedonian Salvia amplexicaulis, S. jurisicii and S. ringens, for the first time. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents varied in a broad range (3.92-146.49 mg GAE/g and 7.11-67.51 mg QE/g, respectively), with the highest values obtained for S. amplexicaulis and S. ringens extracts. Certain S. amplexicaulis and S. ringens extracts neutralized more than 80% of DPPH radicals at the highest concentration, while S. amplexicaulis extracts showed up to ≈50% inhibition of β-carotene oxidation in β-carotene/linoleic acid assay. Post-distillation waste extracts inhibited acetylcholinesterase (25.94-38.15%) and tyrosinase (18.84-59.52%), with the strongest inhibition of S. amplexicaulis extracts. The obtained results suggest that post-distillation waste of tested species, especially of S. amplexicaulis, show antioxidant and anti-neurodegenerative activities and could be considered as potential raw material rich in polyphenols.

6-bromo-indirubin-3\u2032-oxime (6BIO), a Glycogen synthase kinase-3\u03b2 inhibitor, activates cytoprotective cellular modules and suppresses cellular senescence-mediated biomolecular damage in human fibroblasts

As genetic interventions or extended caloric restriction cannot be applied in humans, many studies have been devoted to the identification of natural products that can prolong healthspan. 6-bromoindirubin-3′-oxime (6BIO), a hemi-synthetic derivative of indirubins found in edible mollusks and plants, is a potent inhibitor of Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (Gsk-3β). This pleiotropic kinase has been implicated in various age-related diseases including tumorigenesis, neurodegeneration and diabetes. Accordingly, 6BIO has shown anti-tumor and anti-neurodegenerative activities; nevertheless, the potential role of 6BIO in normal human cells senescence remains largely unknown. We report herein that treatment of human diploid skin fibroblasts with 6BIO reduced the oxidative load, conferred protection against oxidative stress-mediated DNA damage, and it also promoted the activation of antioxidant and proteostatic modules; these effects were largely phenocopied by genetic inhibition of Gsk-3. Furthermore, prolonged treatment of cells with 6BIO, although it decreased the rate of cell cycling, it significantly suppressed cellular senescence-related accumulation of biomolecular damage. Taken together, our presented findings suggest that 6BIO is a novel activator of antioxidant responses and of the proteostasis network in normal human cells; moreover, and given the low levels of biomolecules damage in 6BIO treated senescing cells, this compound likely exerts anti-tumor properties.

Biological activities and chemical composition of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. extracts

This study was aimed to examine chemical composition and biological activities of water, ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. (Lamiaceae). The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that the largest amounts of polyphenols were present in methanol extract, followed by ethanol and water extracts, with the kaempferol glycosides as the most abundant components (>40%). Water extract was the most powerful in 2.2-dyphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching antioxidant assays, while the ethanol extract performed the highest activity in 2.2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt (ABTS) assay. Methanol and water extracts neutralized DPPH radicals more efficiently than standard 3.5-di-tert-butyl-4 hydroxytoluene (BHT) (15.1μg/mL, 15.8μg/mL and 17.9μg/mL, respectively). The antioxidant activity could be possibly attributed to very high content of kaempferol glycosides in the extracts. Ethanol extract was more active against pathogenic bacteria (minimum inhibitory concentrations, MIC, ranged between 30.0mg/mL and 40.0mg/mL) than water extract, which was generally stronger antifungal agent (MIC varied from 8.0mg/mL to 64.0mg/mL). Water extract also showed stronger cytotoxic activity against HCT-116 cells than ethanol extract (IC50 values were 114.1μg/mL and 164.5μg/mL, respectively). The ethanol extract showed slightly stronger antineurodegenerative effects than water extract, especially in tyrosinase inhibition where ethanol extract was considerably effective compared with commercial inhibitor kojic acid. Ethanol and water extracts of S. amplexicaulis showed strong antioxidant and antineurodegenerative activities, which places them among promising natural curative resources for food and pharmaceutical industries.

Composition and biological activities of different extracts of Salvia jurisicii, a rare and endemic Macedonian species

This is the first report on the phenolic composition and biological activities of endemic species Salvia jurisicii Košanin (Lamiaceae) originating from Macedonia. Aerial parts of S. jurisicii were extracted with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, ethanol and water. All extracts were tested spectrophotometrically for total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while their phenolic composition was analyzed using HPLC-DAD. The antioxidant activity of extracts was studied using 2,2-dyphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), ferric reducing ability of plasma and ß-carotene bleaching assays. Being the most frequently used solvents for extraction of bioactive ingredients from medicinal plants, water and ethanol extracts were chosen for further testing of antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antineurodegenerative activities. More polar solvent extracts showed higher total phenolic content and lower flavonoid content. Ethanol and methanol extracts, followed by water extract exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity. Extracts showed antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and micromycetes. The cytotoxicity assay showed slight toxicity to HCT-116 cell line. In the antineurodegenerative assays, the extracts performed lower inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase than standards. According to the results of this study, it can be inferred that more polar extracts of S. jurisicii were quantitatively richer in total phenolics, showing stronger antioxidant activity. Ethanol extract showed stronger biological activities comparing to water extract.
