Carica seeds (Carica pubescens) contain alkaloid, saponin, and flavonoid compounds, which have pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antihyperlipidemic properties, but their bioavailability is low. Nanotechnology has significantly advanced in drug delivery systems because it can enhance absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing entry into the bloodstream. This study aims to create and evaluate the characteristics of carica seed extract nanoparticles with varying concentrations of chitosan. The carica seed extract was obtained using the maceration method with 70% ethanol as the solvent. The Carica seed extract was then formulated into nanoparticles using the ionic gelation method with varying concentrations of chitosan: NaTPP, specifically formulas FA (0.3:1), FB (0.2:1), and FC (0.1:1). The resulting nanoparticle colloids were characterized for particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), percent transmittance (%T), and specific functional groups. The results showed that the particle sizes for formulas FA, FB, and FC were 243.7 nm, 47.96 nm, and 116.6 nm, respectively. The PDI values for formulas FA, FB, and FC were 0.378, 0.357, and 0.52, respectively. The percent transmittance for all three formulas ranged from 99.5% to 99.6%. The characterization of functional groups indicated interactions between the carica seed extract, chitosan, and NaTPP, with the presence of OH, N-H, aliphatic CH, P=O, and PO3 groups. These interactions were observed based on the shift in wavenumbers in the FTIR results for each sample. All carica seed nanoparticle formulas showed particle sizes within the nanometer range (<1000 nm), polydispersity indices less than 1, percent transmittance close to 100%, and specific functional groups indicating interactions between the extract and the coating polymer. Formula FB was the optimal formula, with the smallest nanoparticle size (<100 nm), a PDI value of <0.5, and a percent transmittance of >99%.

Exploring the therapeutic potential: A comprehensive review on the Phytochemistry of Curcuma aromatic

Curcuma aromatic Salisb. (C. aromatica) is commonly known as wild turmeric mentioned as ‘Vanaharidra’ in Ayurveda, belongs to the ‘ginger family’ Zingiberaceae. It is a perennial herb with characteristic aromatic rhizomes used in many traditional systems of medicines in India, China and other Southeast Asian countries. The rhizome of the plant is rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, curcuminoids, tannins and terpenoids which are reported to be the reasons for its various pharmacological properties. The extraction of compounds in different solvents shows that the plant contains curdione, neocurdione, germacrone as its major components. Extensive literature survey showed that the plant has anti- angiogenic, cholerectic and cholagougic, anthelmintic, antimicrobial, wound healing, anticancer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammmatory, analgesic, antitussive, larvicidal, antimelonogenic, anti-nephrotic, antiplatelet, anti-hyperlipidemic, antivenom, and neuroprotective properties. The plant thus proves to be a promising candidate for the development and designing of modern drugs for several diseases. The present study was aimed to review the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of C. aromatic Salisb.

A review on pharmacological studies of Clitoria ternatea

The butterfly pea, a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family, is found extensively globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Locals often utilize butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) as a medicinal resource due to its flavonoid compounds, predominantly present in its roots, leaves, and flowers. Flavonoids, which are phenolic compounds, possess antioxidant properties that safeguard against cell damage caused by free radicals. This review of the literature aims to explore the various health benefits associated with the butterfly pea. The approach conducted in writing this article involves sourcing information from diverse journal articles available online, including Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Based on the review, butterfly pea flowers are recognized for their advantageous qualities, including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, hypoallergenic, antitussive, anti-aging, and antidepressant properties.

Effect of Furocyst on Lipid Profile and Insulin Resistance Across Different Categories of Body Mass Index in Women With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

Introduction Insulin resistance is a fundamental factor in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)and has been found to mediate a close association with obesity and dyslipidemia. While the anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek seed extracts have been demonstrated, research on its anti-hyperlipidemic properties is still in its novice stage, with inconclusive evidence. The present study assessed the impact of fenugreek seed extracts rich in furostanolic saponins (Furocyst) on lipid profiles across different categories of body mass index (BMI) in women with PCOS. Methodology The study was a single-blinded, randomized clinical study conducted among 230 patients between 18 and 45 years of age, presenting to the Gynecology and Obstetrics OPD for treatment of PCOS. After screening for eligibility, patients were enrolled and randomized into the experimental group (receiving Furocyst BD for three months) and the placebo group. Blood samples collected before treatment and after the completion of treatment were investigated for insulin resistance and lipid profile. The final analysis was conducted on 188 patients (104 in the Furocyst group and 84 in the placebo group) and stratified for different categories of BMI (based on WHO classification). Results A significant reduction in the mean BMI in all patients overall and in patient subgroups according to BMI was noted after 12 weeks of treatment with Furocyst, which was statistically significant in the obese (p<0.001). The HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) index was also reduced in the Furocyst group across all BMI categories, including sub-classes of obese (p<0.001). The lipid-lowering effects of Furocyst were observed on total cholesterol, triglyceride, and VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) in all patients, irrespective of the initial BMI category (p<0.05). The drug did not affect the mean serum HDL (high-density lipoprotein) levels. In obese patients, Furocyst also exhibited a statistically significant reduction in LDL-HDL ratio and cholesterol-HDL ratio. Conclusion The present study demonstrates the insulin-sensitizing, glucose-regulating, anti-obesity, and anti-hyperlipidemic properties of Furocyst in women with PCOS. The overweight and obese seem to benefit most from the drug. The use of Furocyst may be considered a pragmatic approach to treating PCOS-related symptoms and improving metabolic disturbances, specifically by optimizing the lipid profile in the affected women and lowering cardiovascular risk factors in the long term.

A Comprehensive Review on Nutrient Profile and Pharmacological Benefits of Musa paradisiaca

The Banana (Musa paradisiaca Linn., Family: Musaceae) is one of the oldest and most widely cultivated fruit plants, dating back to prehistoric times. Bananas are rich in minerals and phytochemicals, contributing to their significant culinary, nutritional, and medicinal properties. This review analyzes 191 peer-reviewed articles published between 1981 and July 2023 to comprehensively assess the health benefits of bananas. Studies highlight their effectiveness in reducing inflammation, cancer, diabetes, depression, diarrhea, urolithiasis, and ulcers. Additionally, bananas exhibit antibacterial, antiviral, antihyperlipidemic, antiatherosclerotic, hepatoprotective, hair-growing, wound-healing, and antihypertensive properties. The articles were sourced from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using keywords like Musa paradisiaca, health benefits, inflammation, cancer, diabetes, and phytochemicals. Inclusion criteria included original research, clinical trials, in vitro and in vivo studies, and reviews focused on banana’s medicinal properties, while non-peer-reviewed papers and studies not directly related to Musa paradisiaca were excluded. This review reinforces the comprehensive health-promoting benefits of bananas and sets the stage for future research, which should focus on large-scale clinical trials, phytochemical standardization, and sustainable utilization of banana plant components. Bananas hold immense potential as both a functional food and a medicinal plant, making them a promising subject for future studies in nutraceuticals and sustainable agriculture.

Persicaria minor (Huds.) Opiz Exhibits Antihypertensive Effects by Inhibiting the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme/Angiotensin II Type 1 Receptor Pathway in Human Endothelial Cells.

Overactivation of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)/angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) pathway leads to vasoconstriction and elevated blood pressure. Persicaria minor (Huds.) Opiz is an herbal plant known for its antioxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-atherosclerotic properties, with bioactive compounds that exhibit antihypertensive effects. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antihypertensive effects of the standardized aqueous extract of P. minor leaf (AEPM) through the ACE/AT1R pathway in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) induced with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). HUVECs were stimulated with PMA to induce ACE, with or without AEPM or captopril treatment, for 24 h. Subsequently, ACE mRNA expression, ACE protein levels, ACE activity, angiotensin II levels, and AT1R expression were measured. The results demonstrated that AEPM treatment significantly reduced ACE mRNA expression, ACE protein levels, ACE activity, angiotensin II levels, and AT1R expression in PMA-induced HUVECs. The modulatory effects of AEPM on the ACE/AT1R pathway were comparable to those of captopril. Ex vivo experiments further confirmed that AEPM reduced the contraction responses of rat aortic rings to PMA. In conclusion, P. minor effectively inhibits the ACE/AT1R pathway in PMA-induced HUVECs, suggesting its potential as a natural antihypertensive agent.

Evaluation of bioactive components of Alchornea cordifolia leaf extract and its in vitro antidiabetic and in vivo anti-hyperlipidemic properties in Wistar rats with hyperlipidemia induced by P407

BackgroundAlchornea cordifolia is a shrub or small tree common in tropical Africa as it serves as food and traditional medicine in many local communities. The current research was carried out to determine the nutritional, phytochemical, in vitro antioxidant as well as the in vivo anti-hyperlipidemic effects of the ethanolic extracts of A.cordifolia (EEAC) leaf on experimentally induced hyperlipidemia. MethodologyA total number of 30 rats comprising experimental and control animals were used in this study. Wistar rats with poloxamer-47 induced hyperlipidemia as well as control were randomly divided into five groups of six animals each viz. Normal control group (I), induced rats with 500 mg/kg of P-407 receiving distilled water only group (II) induced rats with 500 mg/kg dose of P-407 and treated with Atorvastatin (ATV) at 20mg/kg body weight/day (III). Induced rats with 500mg/kg dose of P-407 and treated with A.cordifolia leaves extract (AC) at 500mg/kg body weight/day (IV), induced rats with 500 mg/kg dose of P-407 and treated with A.cordifolia leaves extract (AC) at 1000 mg/kg body weight/day (V). The administration of all treatments was through oral gavage and the duration was 21 days. ResultsThe proximate, phytochemical, vitamins and minerals analysis showed that A. cordifolia leaf extract is rich in Carbohydrates, protein, crude fibre Vitamins A and B with a moderate amount of Vitamins B and C, sodium, calcium, and iron. The phytochemical analyses revealed that the leaf extract of A.cordifolia has a high amount of phenolics, flavonoids, and to a lesser extent phytosteroids, coumarins, alkaloids, terpenoids, and glycosides. in vitro antioxidant analysis showed A.cordifolia demonstrated dose-dependent percentages of Apx, ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities. The animal studies showed that A.cordifolia extract significantly reversed the complications exerted by poloxamer-407 on Wistar rats. Extract characterization by Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) identified cyanidin-3-galactoside-5-(6-p-coumarylglucoside) (RT=37,945), 2, 3-dihydroxystearic acid (RT=21,850) and 9, 12, 15-octadecatrienal (RT=18,200) as the three most abundant bioactive compounds that could be responsible for the bioactivity of the plant. ConclusionIn conclusion, the ACEE can be considered a promising alternative therapeutic option for the management of hyperlipidemia owing to its antihyperglycemic, hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects in hyperlipidemic rats.

A comprehensive review on chemical and pharmacological potential of Synsepalum dulcificum (Schumach. &amp; Thonn.) Daniell

The fruit of plant Synsepalum dulcificum(Schumach. &amp; Thonn.) Daniell, is found native to tropical regions of West Africa, and vernacularly recognized as the “Miracle Fruit” by Africans. The property of the plant has traditionally been employed in many food industries, besides its ethnopharmacological significance. The phytochemical analysis from literature reveals that various parts of plant contains many bioactive components including alkaloids, lignans, phenolic acids, glycoproteins and flavonoids. Recent studies exhibit its pharmacologicalpotential such as antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemia and anti-convulsant properties. Therefore, this review aims to systematically summarizes scientific evidences with the therapeutic, ethnopharmacological and traditional claims found in literature. However, the data acquired is still very imperfect, thus future research is hopeful to discover the precise mechanism of action of its bioactive components to explore chemical constituents, and their nutraceutical and clinical uses of this multipurpose plant to employ its valuable effects on human beings.

Deciphering the ameliorative effect of Aloe vera (L.) burm. F. extract on histopathological alterations in Streptozotocin-induced WNIN/GR-ob rats

Ethnopharmacological relevanceNatural products have emerged as a novel source in the management of non-communicable diseases, more so in diabetes mellitus and its comorbidities. Aloe vera is widely recognized for its anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic properties and numerous researchers have identified component (s) from Aloe vera attributing to these therapeutic effects. Aim of the studyThe current work was undertaken to gain insight into the protective effect of Aloe vera (L.) Burm. f. extract to study the cytoarchitecture/histopathological alterations in the target organs in mutant Obese WNIN/GR-Ob rats that were made frank diabetic with streptozotocin. Materials and methodsRats were divided into five groups. 1)WNIN-GR-Ob/control group 2)WNIN-GR-Ob treated with STZ 3)WNIN-GR-Ob + STZ + Sitagliptin 4)WNIN-GR-Ob + STZ + Aloe vera 5)WNIN-GR-Ob/control group + Aloe vera. Histopathological analysis of the pancreas, kidney, liver, and adipocytes was done after 4 weeks of treatment. ResultsThe histopathological examination of STZ-induced diabetic rats revealed significant changes in all the vital organs including cell infiltration, degeneration, and necrosis. Treatment with A. vera negated most of the histopathological changes seen in STZ induced rats. Sitagliptin—which served as a positive control in the present study—reversed the alterations seen in streptozotocin rats. ConclusionConsidering the hypoglycaemic and hypolipidemic activities of Aloe vera that have been previously demonstrated by us, the present study further re-instates the therapeutic efficacy of Aloe vera towards vital organs. It was able to restore islet cells and reduce β-cell damage. In addition, it was also able to aid in kidney tubular regeneration and reverse the degenerative changes brought on by streptozotocin on liver. Further, Aloe vera treated group exhibited moderate hyperplasia with decreased size of adipocytes and reduced macrophage infiltration. Thus, our findings advocate its application as an important nutraceutical in the therapeutic management of diabetes mellitus and associated complications.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anti-hyperlipidemic Effect of Tridax Procumbens L. Flower Extract by in Vitro Method

This study assessed the in vitro antioxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic properties of Tridax procumbens Linn methanolic and hydro alcoholic flower extract. The amount of antioxidant activity was measured using techniques including DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl) and nitric oxide. We analyzed the percentage of different free radicals that were scavenged using ascorbic acid, a common antioxidant. Using the TBARS assay and lipid peroxidation measurements, the extracts anti-hyperlipidemic potential was also assessed. Furthermore, the phytochemical analysis of the floral extracts that were methanolic and hydroalcoholic revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenols, saponins, terpenoids, triterpenes, alkaloids, glycosides, and tannins in substantial amounts. Significant antioxidant activity was found (P&lt;0.001) for DPPH scavenging at various flower extract doses. The methanolic extract's IC50 value and % inhibition were higher than hydro-alcoholic extracts.

Comparative phytochemical, antioxidant, and hemostatic studies of fractions from raw and roasted sea buckthorn seeds in vitro

Various seeds, including sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) seeds, are sources of different bioactive compounds. They can show anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antibacterial, antioxidant, or other biological properties in in vitro and in vivo models. Our preliminary in vitro results have demonstrated that the extracts from raw (no thermal processing) and roasted (thermally processed) sea buckthorn seeds have antioxidant potential and anticoagulant activity. However, it was unclear which compounds were responsible for these properties. Therefore, in continuation of our previous study, the extracts were fractionated by C18 chromatography. Phytochemical analysis of three fractions (a, b, and c) from raw sea buckthorn seeds and four fractions (d, e, f, and g) from roasted sea buckthorn seeds were performed. Several in vitro assays were also conducted to determine the antioxidant and procoagulant/anticoagulant potential of the fractions and two of their major constituents—isorhamnetin 3-O-β-glucoside7-O-α-rhamnoside and serotonin. LC–MS analyses showed that serotonin is the dominant constituent of fractions c and f, which was tentatively identified on the basis of its HRMS and UV spectra. Moreover, fractions c and f, as well as b and e, contained different B-type proanthocyanidins. Fractions b and e consisted mainly of numerous glycosides of kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. The results of oxidative stress assays (measurements of protein carbonylation, lipid peroxidation, and thiol groups oxidation) showed that out of all the tested fractions, fraction g (isolated from roasted seeds and containing mainly dihexoses, and serotonin) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant properties.

Soursop leaf extract and fractions protects against L-NAME-induced hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

Despite the high phenolic content of Annona muricata, little is known about its anti-hypertensive and antihyperlipidemic properties. This study evaluated the anti-hypertensive and antihyperlipidemic potential of A. muricata leaf extracts. Forty-two male Wistar rats were divided into seven groups of six animals each. N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) was used to induce hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Phytochemical screening of Annona muricata leaf extracts (AMLE) revealed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, steroids, terpenoids, and phenols. Comparing the methanol extract with the ethyl acetate fraction, quantification revealed that the methanol extract contained more phenolics, flavonoids, and alkaloids. The AMLE rats significantly reduced triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, atherogenic index, coronary risk index, and blood pressure. The significant decrease in GSH, catalase, SOD, GST, and oxidative stress markers (MDA, nitrites, and MPO) was reversed by AMLE in a dose-dependent manner. Also, the elevated serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in the hypertensive rats were attenuated in the treatment groups. This study suggests the potential ameliorative effects of Annona muricata leaf extracts against L-NAME-induced hypertension in rats. Notably, the study showed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of A. muricata leaf extracts, which is seen in its ability to attenuate oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines in L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats. A. muricata extracts also decreased atherogenic risk and improved lipid profiles.

Lipid-lowering drugs like statins can reduce LDL levels by 25-60%, but they have negative impacts on clinical outcomes. Lipoprotein metabolism involves various enzymes, and atherosclerosis accumulates fat, cholesterol, and calcium in artery linings, creating fibrous plaques that reduce blood flow and oxygen supply, leading to heart damage and death. Atherosclerosis accumulates fat, cholesterol, and calcium in artery linings, creating fibrous plaques. This leads to reduced blood flow and oxygen supply, causing heart damage and death. REVIEW ON CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF GENUS JUNIPER

Juniper species belonging to the family Cupressaceae are evergreen shrubs or trees that thrive in dry, rocky, or sandy soils. There are roughly 67 species in the genus, all indigenous to the northern hemisphere. Several species of this genus have been reported to have a variety of pharmacological activities, including diuretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, and anti-hyperlipidemic properties. Additionally, some species have been shown to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective properties in Parkinson's disease patients. The majority of these activities are caused by the phytochemical constituents found in these species. This article covers most of the constituents of plants of the genus juniper reported from 2010 to 2023. Furthermore, the biological activities of plants of the genus juniper are presented.

Exploring the potential therapeutic role of benzofuran derivatives in cancer treatment

Benzofuran serves as the primary active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in a plethora of both naturally occurring and synthetic drugs known for their potent biological activities. The diverse array of biological effects demonstrated by benzofuran and its analogues encompasses anticancer, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, analgesic, anti-parasitic, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-convulsant, antipyretic, anti-tubercular, anti-Alzheimer, and antioxidant properties, among others. Given this extensive range of therapeutic potentials, benzofuran and its derivatives have garnered significant attention and are extensively utilized in pharmaceutical research and development. This review article focuses specifically on the anti-cancer properties of benzofuran and its derivatives, underscoring the pivotal role of benzofuran as a prominent and versatile scaffold for designing and developing novel therapeutic agents.

Black Goji Berry (Lycium ruthenicum) Juice Fermented with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG Enhances Inhibitory Activity against Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV and Key Steps of Lipid Digestion and Absorption.

With the global increase in hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, there is an urgent need to explore dietary interventions targeting the inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) and lipid digestion and absorption. This study investigated how Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) affects various aspects of black goji berry (BGB) (Lycium ruthenicum Murr.) juice, including changes in physicochemical and functional properties, as well as microbiological and sensory attributes. Throughout the fermentation process with 2.5-10% (w/v) BGB, significantly improved probiotic viability, lactic acid production, and decreased sugar content. While total flavonoids increase, anthocyanins decrease, with no discernible change in antioxidant activities. Metabolite profiling reveals elevated phenolic compounds post-fermentation. Regarding the inhibition of lipid digestion and absorption, fermented BGB exhibits improved bile acid binding, and disrupted cholesterol micellization by approximately threefold compared to non-fermented BGB, while also increasing pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity. Furthermore, a decrease in cholesterol uptake was observed in Caco-2 cells treated with fermented BGB (0.5 mg/mL), with a maximum reduction of 16.94%. Fermented BGB also shows more potent DPP-IV inhibition. Sensory attributes are significantly improved in fermented BGB samples. These findings highlight the potential of BGB as a bioactive resource and a promising non-dairy carrier for LGG, enhancing its anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic properties.

Role of Arthrospira Platensis in Preventing and Treating High-Fat Diet-Induced Hypercholesterolemia in Adult Rats.

Hyperlipidaemia is a recognised risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In this study, the antihyperlipidaemic properties of spirulina (Arthrospira platensis, strain S2 from Serbia) were tested in adult Wistar rats before and after induction of hypercholesterolaemia by a high-fat diet (HFD) to compare the preventive with the curative effect. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels were measured in the blood samples. The chemical composition (lipids, proteins and cholesterol) and the content of bile acids in the faeces of the animals were also analysed. Feeding rats with an atherogenic diet for 10 weeks led to the successful development of hyperlipidaemia, as serum TC and LDL-C levels as well as lipids, cholesterol and bile acids in the animals' faeces were significantly increased. Pre- and post-treatment with spirulina led to a reduction in serum LDL, TC and ALT levels. Administration of spirulina resulted in both a significant increase in primary bile acids excretion and a decrease in bile acids metabolism, with pre-treatment being more effective than post-treatment in some cases. These results suggest that increased excretion of bile acids as well as an effect on the gut microbiota may be the mechanism responsible for the anti-hyperlipidaemic activity of the tested spirulina strain.

Prediction by DFT and synthesis of new xanthene derivatives: Evaluation of their toxicity and antihyperlipidemic properties in-vivo and in-silico

The current research focuses on the synthesis of novel Xanthene-based heterocyclic compounds and the evaluation of their toxicity and antihyperlipidemic effect. Our approach consists of exploring this synthesis and its mechanism theoretically via DFT calculations, and carrying out the synthesis in the laboratory. The Xanthene derivatives were synthesized by O-p-methylbenzylation and O-benzoylation, and their structures were established using standard spectroscopic methods. The experimental results obtained are in good agreement with the theoretical data. Furthermore, the synthetized Xanthene compounds were evaluated for their acute oral toxicity, and the results suggest the safety of oral administration of these compounds at a dose equal to or less than 2000 mg/kg. These Xanthene derivatives were then evaluated in Triton-induced hyperlipidemic rats and their effects were compared to those of the norm. They were found to have good antihyperlipidemic activity, comparable to that of the marketed antihyperlipidemic drug. In addition to in vivo investigations, in silico studies involving molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, as well as ADME analyses, were carried out to support and explain the experimental results. Additionally, docking results showed that the compounds exhibited robust binding interactions with key residues of the target receptor. Furthermore, the stability of the formed ligand-protein complexes was demonstrated through 100 ns MD simulations. Lastly, the prediction of ADME properties shows that Xanthene compounds possess good and favorable pharmacokinetic profiles.

A Review on Chemical Constituents and Pharmacological Action of the Genus Lindera

The genus Lindera consists of approximately 100 species that are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. It is represented by widely well-known medicinal and aromatic plants that produce various phytochemicals with potential pharmacological actions. This review attempts to summarize the information on the phytochemicals of Lindera species together with their biological properties. The data and information were collected via an electronic search engine which are Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, PubMed, and SciFinder. Sesquiterpenes represent the major chemical compounds that have been characterised in Lindera species, as well as alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolics. These compounds were shown to possess anticancer, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, cytotoxic, antiallergic, and antihyperlipidemic properties. The outcome of these studies will further support the therapeutic potential of the genus Lindera and provide convincing evidence for its future clinical applications in modern medicine.
