Association between inflammatory potential of diet and anthropometric indicators of adiposity among a sample of Turkish university

Purpose The inflammatory potential of diet may play a role in the regulation of low-grade chronic inflammation derived from obesity. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and anthropometric indicators of adiposity among Turkish adults. Design/methodology/approach The study sample consisted of 833 young adults (mean age = 23 ± 5.2 years). The inflammatory potential of the diet was evaluated with a DII. Data on dietary intake were collected by a single 24-h dietary recall, and DII was estimated from 25 dietary components. Also, the Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) adherence screener was applied using the 14-item assessment tool. Findings The proinflammatory diet was statistically associated with young (p < 0.001), singles (p < 0.001), high school degree (p = 0.011), students (p < 0.001), not working or unemployed (p < 0.001), eating outside (p = 0.016) and lower adherence to a Med-Diet (p = 0.027). There was a statistically significant positive relationship between the DII score and body weight (BW), waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (r = 0.107; p = 0.002, r = 0.092; p = 0.008, r = 0.115; p = 0.001, respectively). Besides, there was a statistically significant negative relationship between MED score and BW, WHtR and neck circumference (r = −0.101; p = 0.004, r = −0.084; p = 0.016, r = −0.175; p = 0.000, respectively). Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this was the first Turkish study to assess the association between the anthropometric indicators of obesity and DII or adherence to Med-Diet in young adults. Lower DII scores and higher adherence to Med-Diet are related to the better status of anthropometric indicators of adiposity.

The relationship between anthropometric indices and the presence of hypertension in an Iranian population sample using data mining algorithms.

Hypertension (HTN) is a common chronic condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Anthropometric indices of adiposity are known to be associated with a risk of HTN. The aim of this study was to identify the anthropometric indices that best associate with HTN in an Iranian population. 9704 individuals aged 35-65 years were recruited as part of the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study. Demographic and anthropometric data of all participants were recorded. HTN was defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg, and/ or a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg on two subsequent measurements, or being treated with oral drug therapy for BP. Data mining methods including Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), and Bootstrap Forest (BF) were applied. Of 9704 participants, 3070 had HTN, and 6634 were normotensive. LR showed that body roundness index (BRI), body mass index (BMI) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were significantly associated with HTN in both genders (P < 0.0001). BRI showed the greatest association with HTN (OR = 1.276, 95%CI = (1.224, 1.330)). For BMI we had OR = 1.063, 95%CI = (1.047, 1.080), for VAI we had OR = 1.029, 95%CI = (1.020, 1.038). An age < 47 years and BRI < 4.04 was associated with a 90% probability of being normotensive. The BF indicated that age, sex and BRI had the most important role in HTN. In summary, among anthropometric indices the most powerful indicator for discriminating hypertensive from normotensive patients was BRI.

Anthropometric indicators of adiposity and risk of primary liver cancer: A systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis

Background and aimsAdiposity is associated with an increased risk of primary liver cancer (PLC). As the most commonly used indicator of adiposity, the body mass index (BMI) has been questioned for its limitations in reflecting visceral fat. This study aimed to investigate the role of different anthropometric indicators in identifying the risk of PLC by accounting for potential non-linear associations. MethodsSystematic searches were conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Sinomed, Web of Science, and CNKI databases. Hazard ratios (HRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the pooled risk. The dose-response relationship was assessed using a restricted cubic spline model. ResultsSixty-nine studies involving more than 30 million participants were included in the final analysis. Regardless of the indicator used, adiposity was strongly associated with an increased risk of PLC. When comparing the HRs per 1-standard deviation increment across indicators of adiposity, the association was strongest for waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (HR = 1.39), followed by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (HR = 1.22), BMI (HR = 1.13), waist circumference (WC) (HR = 1.12), and hip circumference (HC) (HR = 1.12). A strong non-linear association was observed between each anthropometric parameter and the risk of PLC, regardless of whether the original or decentralised value was used. The positive association between WC and PLC risk remained substantial after adjusting for BMI. The incidence of PLC was higher with central adiposity (52.89 per 100,000 person-years, 95% CI = 50.33–55.44) than general adiposity (39.01 per 100,000 person-years, 95% CI = 37.26–40.75). ConclusionCentral adiposity seems to contribute more to the development of PLC than general adiposity. A larger WC, independent of BMI, was strongly associated with the risk of PLC and might be a more promising predictive indicator than BMI.

Association between dietary inflammatory index and anthropometric indicators of adiposity in Brazilian adolescents.

Diet may play a role in the regulation of obesity-related low-grade chronic inflammation. Assess the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with anthropometric indicators of adiposity in Brazilian adolescents. Data were collected from 71 740 adolescents (12-17 years old) examined in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents. Food consumption was assessed by means of one 24-h dietary recall, and DII was estimated using 39 food parameters. The body mass index (weight/height2 ) for age and sex was used to define overweight (>1 z-score). Abdominal obesity was indicated by waist circumference (WC) values >80th percentile and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) > 0.50. The association between DII and anthropometric indicators was assessed using logistic regression models. The mean DII score was higher in girls than in boys (0.77; SD=0.04 vs. 0.04; SD=0.05). Adolescents in the 4th quartile of DII, compared with those in the 1st quartile, had increased odds of being overweight (boys: OR=1.76; 95% CI: 1.37; 2.25; girls: OR=1.63; 95%CI: 1.36; 1.95), having abdominal obesity (boys: OR=1.61; 95%CI: 1.33; 1.95; girls: OR=1.73; 95%CI: 1.48; 2.03), and having high WHtR (boys: OR=1.91; 95%CI: 1.52; 2.39; girls: OR=1.75; 95%CI: 1.46; 2.11). The findings showed a direct association between the dietary inflammatory potential measured by DII and adiposity.

Associations between Sleep Duration and Anthropometric Indices of Adiposity in Female University Students.

Objectives: To examine associations between sleep duration as well as time of going to sleep and anthropometric indices related to the amount and distribution of adiposity. Material: A total of 969 female university students, aged 19–24 years. Methods: Participants self-reported their sleep duration. Body weight, height, and waist circumference were measured. BMI, WHR and WHtR were calculated. Statistical analyses of results involved logistic regression models. Socioeconomic status and level of stress were added as covariates. Results: In 15% of the sample, sleep was too short (<6 h), and 10% slept too long (>8 h). Compared to women who followed the recommended sleep duration, among short sleepers, both underweight and overweight were more frequent, while long sleepers were more likely to be overweight. A higher prevalence of abdominal obesity and increased risk of metabolic syndrome were observed in both short and long sleepers than in recommended sleepers. Irregular sleep times were connected with higher OR, both for BMI < 18.5 and BMI > 25, for WC > 80, and WHtR below 0.4 and above 0.5. Irregular sleep times also led to an increased risk of metabolic diseases prevalence. Conclusions: Both too long and too short sleep increases the risk of overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity and, as a consequence, the risk of metabolic syndrome in young women.

Relative fat mass, a new index of adiposity, is strongly associated with incident heart failure: data from PREVEND

Body-mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio are commonly used anthropometric indices of adiposity. However, over the past 10 years, several new anthropometric indices were developed, that more accurately correlated with body fat distribution and total fat mass. They include relative fat mass (RFM), body-roundness index (BRI), weight-adjusted-waist index and body-shape index (BSI). In the current study, we included 8295 adults from the PREVEND (Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-Stage Disease) observational cohort (the Netherlands), and sought to examine associations of novel as well as established adiposity indices with incident heart failure (HF). The mean age of study population was 50 ± 13 years, and approximately 50% (n = 4134) were women. Over a 11 year period, 363 HF events occurred, resulting in an overall incidence rate of 3.88 per 1000 person-years. We found that all indices of adiposity (except BSI) were significantly associated with incident HF in the total population (P < 0.001); these associations were not modified by sex (P interaction > 0.1). Amongst adiposity indices, the strongest association was observed with RFM [hazard ratio (HR) 1.67 per 1 SD increase; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.37–2.04]. This trend persisted across multiple age groups and BMI categories, and across HF subtypes [HR: 1.76, 95% CI 1.26–2.45 for HF with preserved ejection fraction; HR 1.61, 95% CI 1.25–2.06 for HF with reduced ejection fraction]. We also found that all adiposity indices (except BSI) improved the fit of a clinical HF model; improvements were, however, most evident after adding RFM and BRI (reduction in Akaike information criteria: 24.4 and 26.5 respectively). In conclusion, we report that amongst multiple anthropometric indicators of adiposity, RFM displayed the strongest association with HF risk in Dutch community dwellers. Future studies should examine the value of including RFM in HF risk prediction models.

Role of C-reactive protein and gamma-glutamyl transferase in the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome

Previous studies have reported that metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an increased risk of major cardiovascular events and levels of C-Reactive protein (CRP) can be considered as markers of MetS and its constituent components. Oxidative stress plays a major role in the development of MetS, and levels of gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) change with response to oxidative stress are also associated with MetS, which may be modulated by CRP. This study was conducted to identify the role of GGT and CRP as biomarkers in the diagnosis of MetS, a high-risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. One hundred and fifty patients meeting the diagnostic criteria of MetS and an equal number of controls were included in the study. The cases were selected from pathology and molecular biology laboratories, Karachi, while the controls came from the general population. Anthropometric indices of adiposity and blood pressure were recorded for both cases and controls. Blood samples were taken from all subjects to determine the levels of CRP and GGT. All those cases and control height, weight, hip waist circumference were noted and the comparison of CRP and GGT by applying students' t-test as markers for detection of metabolic syndrome. p-value 0.001 was considered as significant. This study suggests that in patients with metabolic syndrome were found to have raised the basal metabolic rate, C-reactive protein and GGT were synergistically associated with MetS independently of another confounding factor in the general population. Waist-to-height ratio, an optimal anthropometric indicator for metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease in the Western Chinese male population

BackgroundNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been entitled as metabolic-dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Therefore anthropometric indicators of adiposity may provide a non-invasive predictive and diagnostic tool for this disease. This study intended to validate and compare the MAFLD predictive and diagnostic capability of eight anthropometric indicators.MethodsThe study involved a population-based retrospective cross-sectional design. The Fangchenggang area male health and examination survey (FAMHES) was used to collect data of eight anthropometric indicators, involving body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-hip ratio (WHR), body adiposity index (BAI), cardiometabolic index (CMI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and abdominal volume index (AVI). Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and the respective areas under the curves (AUCs) were utilized to compare the diagnostic capacity of each indicator for MAFLD and to determine the optimal cutoff points. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for all anthropometric indicators and MAFLD. The Spearman rank correlation coefficients of anthropometric indicators, sex hormones, and MAFLD were also calculated.ResultsAll selected anthropometric indicators were significantly associated with MAFLD (P < 0.001), with an AUC above 0.79. LAP had the highest AUC [0.868 (95% CI, 0.853–0.883)], followed by WHtR [0.863 (95% CI, 0.848–0.879)] and AVI [0.859 (95% CI, 0.843–0.874)]. The cutoff values for WHtR, LAP and AVI were 0.49, 24.29, and 13.61, respectively. WHtR [OR 22.181 (95% CI, 16.216–30.340)] had the strongest association with MAFLD, regardless of potential confounders. Among all the anthropometric indicators, the strongest association was seen between LAP and sex hormones.ConclusionAll anthropometric indicators were associated with MAFLD. WHtR was identified as the strongest predictor of MAFLD in young Chinese males, followed by LAP and AVI. The strongest association was found between LAP and sex hormones.

Anthropometric indicators of adiposity as predictors of hypertension

Rationale: Adiposity, especially abdominal, is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and the accuracy of anthropometric indicators to verify the association between adiposity and hypertension it is still little explored. We proposed to evaluate the capacity of anthropometric indicators in the identification of adiposity its relationship with hypertension.

Relationships between anthropometric adiposity indexes and bone mineral density in a cross-sectional Chinese study

Background ContextPrevious studies have reported conflicting results for the relationships between anthropometric adiposity indexes and bone mineral density, based on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, few studies were published based on quantitative computed tomography (QCT), especially for Chinese population. PurposeTo evaluate the associations of spine bone mineral density (BMD) with body mass index (BMI), waist circumstance (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and a body shape index (ABSI) using QCT. Study Design/SettingA Cross-sectional study. Patient SampleAround 3,457 participants in multiple communities across 7 administrative regions of China. Outcome MeasuresSpine BMD was measured using QCT, and the classification of osteoporosis was defined as follows: 1) osteoporosis if BMD <80mg/cm3, 2) osteopenia if BMD 80–119 mg/cm3, and 3) normal bone mass if BMD≥120 mg/cm3. MethodsThis study was conducted using convenient sampling between 2013 and 2017. Multivariable linear regression model and logistic regression models were used for the associations of continuous and categorical BMD, respectively. ResultsAround 3,405 participants were included in the final analyses, including 1,272 males and 2,133 females, with spine BMD of 111.00±35.47 mg/cm3 and 99.38±40.60 mg/cm3, respectively. Spine BMD decreased significantly with the increase of ABSI in females (adjusted β, −5.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], −8.50 to −2.98), and this trend also was kept in females aged at less than 60 years (adjusted β, −14.54; 95% CI, −20.40 to −8.68), and females with age ≥60 years (adjusted β, −7.59; 95% CI, −10.91 to −4.28). However, this inverse association was observed only in males with age ≥ 60 years (adjusted β, −5.19; 95% CI, −10.08 to −0.29). Except ABSI, negative associations of Spine BMD with WC (adjusted β, −0.46; 95% CI, −0.77 to −0.15), WHR (adjusted β, −6.25; 95% CI, −10.63 to −1.86), WHtR (adjusted β, −6.80; 95% CI, −11.63 to −1.97) were shown in females aged at <60 years, and positive association with BMI in males with age ≥60 years (adjusted β, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.29–1.55). ConclusionsABSI had more remarkable association with spine BMD, compared with the other four indexes.

Evaluation of Different Adiposity Indices and Association with Metabolic Syndrome Risk in Obese Children: Is there a Winner?

Body shape index (ABSI) and triponderal mass index (TMI) have been recently associated with cardiovascular risk in adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between different anthropometric adiposity indexes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Caucasian obese children and adolescents. Consecutive obese children aged ≥7 years have been enrolled. Anthropometric parameters, body composition (by bioelectrical impedance), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure have been measured. Fasting blood samples have been analyzed for lipids, insulin, glucose. A multivariate logistic regression analyses, with body mass index z-score, waist to height ratio, ABSI z-score, TMI, conicity index as predictors for MetS (IDEFICS and IDF criteria according to age) has been performed. Four hundred and three (179 boys and 224 girls) obese children, aged 7–20 years, have been evaluated. When we explored the joint contribution of each anthropometric and adiposity index of interest and BMIz on the risk of MetS, we found that the inclusion of ABSIz improved the prediction of MetS compared to BMIz alone. ABSI-BMI can be a useful index for evaluating the relative contribution of central obesity to cardiometabolic risk in clinical management of obese children and adolescents.

Multiple Points Change in the Association of Blood Pressure Subtypes with Anthropometric Indices of Adiposity among Children in a Rural Population.

Background: Hypertension has gained global significance and risk of cardiovascular disease, and adiposity is the most important of the conditions associated with and considered responsible for hypertension in children. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine whether indices of adiposity independently predicted blood pressure at multiple points in gender-specific groups. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 10 randomly selected primary schools within the Ellisras Longitudinal Study, and involved 1816 adolescents (876 girls and 940 boys) aged 8 to 17 years. All the anthropometric indices and blood pressures (BP) were examined according to the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry protocol. Results: In an adjusted linear quantile regression analysis of boys, waist circumference (WC) was associated with BP across all multiple points of systolic blood pressure (SBP). Furthermore, the triceps skinfold site was associated with high SBP. In girls, body mass index (BMI) was significantly associated with SBP after adjustment for potential confounders. Other anthropometric indices of adiposity, including WC, biceps, and triceps skinfold sites were not associated with SBP. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that in black South African children, variables such as WC and triceps skinfold site may provide stronger explanatory capacity to SBP variance and systolic hypertension risk in boys than other adiposity indices; whereas in girls, only WC and BMI predict diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and SBP, respectively.

INDICATORS OF ADIPOSITY ASSOCIATED WITH LOW BODY ESTEEM IN ADOLESCENTS.

ABSTRACTObjective: To investigate the association between weight status and anthropometric indicators of adiposity with body esteem.Methods: Cross-sectional study including 305 adolescents from a public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. The Body-Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults was used to evaluate total body esteem and the “appearance”, “weight”, and “attribution” domains. Body mass index (weight/stature2) was applied to assess weight status and waist circumference, the central body adiposity. The association between indicators of adiposity and body esteem was assessed using Student’s t-test or Mann-Whitney’s test and linear regression models, stratified by sex and age group.Results: Overweight/obesity was observed in 46% of younger adolescents (10 to 13 year-old girls, 10 to 14 year-old boys), 38% of older boys (15 to 18 year old), and 16% of older girls (14 to 18 year old). For both boys and girls in the younger age group, body mass index and waist circumference (as continuous variables) were inversely associated with total body esteem and weight domain. Overweight/obesity was associated with the appearance body esteem domain only among younger male adolescents; no association was found between either the body mass index or waist circumference and the attribution domain.Conclusions: Indicators of adiposity were associated with low body esteem. These findings underscore the fact that considering adolescents’ feelings concerning their body and appearance is important to promote a healthy control of weight.

Obesity in benign prostatic enlargement: A cross-sectional study comparing sonographic and anthropometric indices of adiposity in a tertiary hospital in Southwestern Nigeria.

Findings from studies on obesity and benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) have been inconsistent. With a previous study done in our facility showing no correlation between anthropometric indices of obesity and BPE, this study aimed at reevaluating the association between obesity and BPE using sonographic indices of abdominal/central obesity. Ninety consenting subjects with clinically confirmed BPE had their height and weight [(to calculate body mass index (BMI)] as well as waist and hip circumference [to calculate waist-hip ratio (WHR)] done. The subcutaneous, preperitoneal, and visceral fat thicknesses (SFT, PFT, and VFT, respectively) of these subjects and their prostate volumes were measured on transabdominal Ultrasonography (USS). Transrectal USS was also done to measure the total prostate and transitional zone volumes. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. WHR and waist circumference correlated positively with SFT (r = 0.325, P = 0.002 and r = 0.370, P = 0.000, respectively) and PFT (r = 0.209, P = 0.048 and r = 0.313, P = 0.003, respectively). While BMI correlated positively (r = 0.23, P = 0.029) with transrectal transitional zone volume, all three sonographic indices of adiposity correlated negatively (SFT: r = -0.223, P = 0.035; PFT: r = -0.321, P = 0.002; VFT: r = -0.242, P = 0.021) with transrectal total prostate volume. In addition, PFT correlated negatively with transabdominal prostate volume (r = -0.222, P = 0.037) and transrectal transitional zone volume (r = -0.211, P = 0.046). The relationship of BMI with transrectal transitional zone volume was a direct one, while that of SFT, PFT, and VFT with transrectal total prostate volume as well as PFT with transabdominal prostate volume and transrectal transitional zone volume was an inverse one.

Associations of anthropometric adiposity indexes with hypertension risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis including PURE-China.

Background and objective:The association between hypertension and obesity has been confirmed, while no agreement has been reached about which anthropometric adiposity index is the best. This meta-analysis aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the associations of hypertension risk with body mass index (BMI), waist circumstance (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and a prospective urban and rural epidemiology study from China (PURE-China) was added into this meta-analysis as an individual study.Methods:Systematic literature searching was conducted to identify relevant articles published up to September 2018 in CNKI, WANFANG Data, Web of Science, SinoMed, PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and cross-referencing. Literature reporting the association of hypertension risk with BMI, WC, WHR, and WHtR were defined as eligible. PURE-China data were analyzed and included as 1 eligible study into meta-analyses. Summary odds ratio (OR) and area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were pooled using meta-analysis methods. Heterogeneity and publication bias were evaluated. Subgroups based on gender, country and study design were conducted as well.Results:Thirty-eight original articles including PURE-China were included into meta-analyses, involving 309,585 subjects. WHtR had the strongest association with hypertension risk (OR, 1.68; 95% confidence interval, [CI]:1.29–2.19) and prediction ability (AUC, 70.9%; 95% CI: 67.8%–74.2%), which were also confirmed in subgroup analyses based on gender and country. However, BMI was found to have the highest prediction ability in adjusted models of PURE-China and followed WC, both of which were superior to WHtR (73.7% and 73.4% vs 73.2%).Conclusions:Our overall meta-analysis further confirmed WHtR as a good indicator at discriminating those individuals at increased risk of hypertension, and in some cases, it is better than BMI, WC, and WHR.

Body composition and dairy intake in sedentary employees who participated in a healthy program based on nutrition education and Zumba

The dairy intake is associated with body composition; however, its effect is controversial and remains unknown in relation to exercise interventions as Zumba Fitness®. Thus, we analyzed the body composition and its relation to dairy intake in sedentary employees who participated in a healthy program based on nutrition education and Zumba Fitness®. Sixty-nine sedentary employees (age=38.41±7.45-yr, 81.16% women) participated in a healthy program (16-weeks) based on nutrition education (2 sessions, 1st and 10th week) and Zumba Fitness® (ZF) exercise programs [2 interventions: a) ZF, 1h of ZF/3day/week; b) ZF+BW, 1h of ZF/3day/week plus 20min of bodyweight training]. Body composition (body weight, height, BMI, waist-hip index, ∑6-skinfolds, fat mass and muscle mass), blood pressure and dairy intake (milk, yogurt and cheese) were assessed at baseline and after interventions. Participants were categorized into normal weight (NW, BMI=18.5-24.9Kg/m2) and excess weight (EW, BMI≥25Kg/m2). Dairy intake and changes in BMI (ΔBMI=BMI after intervention-BMI at baseline) were divided into tertiles (T). Only muscle mass (Kg) differed between ZF and ZF+BW (baseline and 16-weeks). Anthropometric indicators of adiposity were lower in NW than EW group (baseline). The ∑6-skinfolds and fat-mass decreased, while muscle mass increased in ZF and ZF+BW, and in NW and EW groups (16-weeks). The most consumed dairy was milk (baseline). Participants of T1 of cheese intake (baseline) had a higher reduction in BMI (0.42±0.56 vs 0.62±1.42Kg/m2) and in ∑6-skinfolds (40.23±13.13 vs 23.51±10.84mm) than individuals in T3 (16-weeks). Employees who presented higher weight loss (T3, BMI decrease>0.50Kg/m2) consumed lower cheese than the weight gain group (T1, BMI increase≥0.33Kg/m2) (baseline). Healthy programs based on nutrition education and Zumba Fitness® improve body composition both in EW and NW sedentary employees. ZF is as effective as ZF+BW. A lower cheese intake, at baseline, but not milk or yogurt, was related to a weight loss.

A6435 Relationship between anthropometric adiposity indexes and hypertension among Chinese adults aged 35–70 years

Objectives: To analysis the association of hypertension risk with body mass index (BMI), waist circumstance (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) based on China part of the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology study (PURE-China). Methods: 44,258 participants were recruited between 2005 and 2009 from urban and rural area of 12 administrative regions in China. Hypertension was defined when met one of the following items: taking antihypertensive drugs; history of hypertension diagnosis; SBP ≥ 140 mmHg and or DBP ≥ 90 mmHg. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratio (OR) and area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) as well as their respective confidence interval (CI) to evaluate the above-mentioned associations. Results: The highest OR was observed for WHtR in both women (OR 2.15, 95% CI: 2.06–2.25) and in men (OR 2.45, 95% CI: 2.31–2.60) in adjusted models. WHtR had the strongest predication abilities of hypertension risk (AUC 66.5%, 95% CI: 66.0%–67.1%) in unadjusted models, but BMI showed strongest prediction abilities in adjusted models (AUC, 73.7%; 95% CI, 73.2%, 74.2%) among both gender, as well as males (AUC, 71.1%, 95% CI, 70.4%, 71.9%) and females (AUC, 75.6%, 95% CI, 75.0%, 76.2%) (Table 1). Conclusion: WHtR had the strongest associations with hypertension risk, but BMI may not be ignored in the screening of hypertension risk.

Relationships of Anthropometric Indices of Centripetal Adiposity With Essential Hypertension and Type - 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Kano Metropolis

The use of centripetal indices of adiposity for cardiovascular risk prediction is gaining popularity over body mass index (BMI). The objectives of the study were to investigate the relationships of centripetal adiposity indices with essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus and find sexual dimorphism in such relationship in Kano. Also to determine the correlation between centripetal adiposity indices and BMI. The study included 405 registered hypertensive, diabetic or hypertensive – diabetic subjects (215 females and 190 males) with mean age of 53.4±0.36. The adiposity indices [BMI, waist circumference (WC) hip circumferences (HC) and waist to hip ratio (WHR)] were obtained using standard protocol. Chi-square and Pearson correlation were used to test for relationship. The results showed that WC was not significantly associated with essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus in females, but was significant in males (P = 0.04). In both sexes, WHR was significantly associated with essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, however, relationship was stronger in the males (P < 0.0001 for males, P = 0.023 for females) In males where both WC and WHR had significant relationship with essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, the relationship was stronger for WHR (P < 0.0001 for WHR, P = 0.04 for WC). In conclusion, WC in males and WHR in both sexes had significant association with essential hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus and compared to WHR, WC correlated better with BMI.

Associations between anthropometric indicators of adiposity and body fat percentage in normal weight young adults

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between various anthropometric adiposity screening indices and body fat percentage estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A total of 186 (95 male and 91 female) normal weight (body mass index [BMI] = 18.5- 24.9 kg/m2) young adults (mean age= 20.96 ± 2.03 years) were measured on body fat percentage, body height, body mass, waist and hip circumferences. Abdominal volume index, body adiposity index, BMI, body roundness index, conicity index, reciprocal ponderal index, waist to height ratio, waist to height 0.5 ratio, and waist to hip ratio were calculated accordingly. Results revealed significant gender effects in all main anthropometric measurements. Except for waist to hip ratio, results indicated significant associations between anthropometric indices and BIA in both male and female participants. BIA results were found to be largely associated with BMI and abdominal volume index in both genders. Bland- Altman analysis showed good agreements between these indices and BIA. Considerable associations and agreements highlight the potential importance and the use of several anthropometric proxies to estimate body adiposity among male and female non-overweight/obese young adults. Despite continuing discussion regarding its accuracy, BMI seems to be useful for monitoring body adiposity within this cohort.
