Farmers’ Attitude towards the Climate-Resilient Technologies of NICRA Project in Anantapur District

Climate change has been perceived with high emphasis from the beginning of this century. Since it directly impacts the ecosystem and agriculture especially over the farmers of dryland regions. The research study has been conducted to assess the farmers’ attitude towards climate-resilient technologies of the National Initiatives on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project by farmers of Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. The sample consists of 60 farmers as beneficiaries from NICRA villages and 60 farmers as nonbeneficiaries from non-NICRA villages were selected randomly. The ex-post facto research design was used in the study. The results of the study showed that more than half of the beneficiaries (51.67 %) and 48.33 per cent of non-beneficiaries had a medium level of favorableness towards climate-resilient technologies of the NICRA project. From the above findings, this is concluded that both beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the NICRA project have a positive favourable attitude towards climate-resilient technologies which is considered as a precursor for adoption of those technologies by the farming community. Hence the results of this research study may help extension organizations for good training and implementation of climate-resilient technologies of National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA).

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and extension advisory service (EAS) stakeholders' prioritisation: a case study of Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract Several climate-smart agriculture (CSA) interventions are promoted by public, private and civil societies in India. However, there is a considerable variation among them. Therefore, to understand the different CSA interventions supported and prioritised by the public and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as their impacts at the farmer level, a case study was undertaken in Anantapur district, as it is highly vulnerable to climate change risks due to the increase in temperature, delayed monsoon, erratic rainfall and frequent occurrence of droughts. A case study research method was followed to assess the CSA interventions promoted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Department of Agriculture, Accion and Adarsha. The findings showed that KVK has focused its extension advisory services on the promotion of field crop (e.g. groundnut)-based CSA. The extension services of NGO-Accion were aimed at promoting horticulture, and Adarsha was prioritised promoting millet-based CSA interventions. Whereas the CSA priority of the department of agriculture was driven by the prevailing zero-budget natural farming project. However, interventions of KVK and NGOs were implemented on a limited scale. Therefore, the recommendations that emerged from the study will help the stakeholders to ensure convergence and foster synergy in implementing CSA interventions at scale. Some challenges faced during the research study were difficulties in the identification of the right stakeholders who were promoting CSA, also their technologies and services related to CSA. However, after a thorough discussion with the extension officers of Anantapur district, the stakeholders were identified and their CSA interventions were ascertained through focus group discussions and secondary data reviewed from magazines and other publications. Furthermore, the present study focused only on the CSA interventions promoted by two public sectors and two NGOs, and there is a wider scope for identifying more stakeholders, e.g. private sector, FPOs and entrepreneurs, and assessing their extent of involvement in the promotion of CSA and prioritisation.

CONSTRAINTS FACED BY FARMERS IN ADOPTION OF CLIMATE RESILIENT TECHNOLOGIES

National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project was launched by ICAR in 2011 to develop climate-resilient agriculture technologies through strategic research. It demonstrates and reinforced to accept better practices and wide-ranging technologies for mitigating climate risk to make farming as a profitable business. The current study was carried out in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The sample consists of 60 farmers as beneficiaries from NICRA villages and 60 farmers as nonbeneficiaries from non-NICRA villages were selected randomly. The ex-post facto research design was used in the study. The constraints faced by the farmers for adoption of climate resilient technologies were lack of sufficient rainfall, lack of owned resources, lack of short duration and drought tolerant crop varieties, lack of knowledge about climate resilient practices, and inadequate financial support. The key suggestions given to the respondents for implementation of climate resilient technologies are the provision of technical guidance and information should be delivered on regular basis, training programs should be conducted about climate resilient practices, financial assistance should be rendered for water and soil conservation and need based technology demonstrations should be given.

Assessment and Modeling of Groundwater Potential Zones by using Geospatial and Decision-making approaches: A case study in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India

Freshwater scarcity is a major issue in Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh (India). Groundwater is the primary source of drinking and irrigation water in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Therefore, it is important to identify areas having groundwater potential; however, the current methods of groundwater exploration consume a lot of time and money. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)-based spatial model is used to identify groundwater potential zones in Anantapur using remote sensing and GIS-based decision support system. Thematic layers considered in this study were geology, geomorphology, soils, land use land cover (LULC), lineament density (LD), drainage density (DD), slope, and rainfall. According to Saaty’s AHP, all these themes and individual features were weighted according to their relative importance in groundwater occurrence. Thematic layers were finally combined using ArcGIS to prepare a groundwater potential zone map. The high weighted value area was considered a groundwater prospecting region. Accordingly, the GWPZ map was classified into four categories: very good, good, moderate, and poor. The very good GWPZ area is 77.37 km2 (24.93%) of the total study area. The northeastern and southeastern sections of the study area, as well as some medium patches in the center and western regions, are covered by moderate GWPZs, which cover an area of 53.07 km2 (17.10%). However, the GWP in the study area’s central, southwestern, and northern portions is poor, encompassing an area of approximately 79.31 km2 (25.56%). Finally, RS and GIS techniques are highly effective and useful for identifying GWPZs.

Occurrence and structures of dolomites in North Eastern part of Anantapur district, and their use in engineering materials

A research was conducted to explore the characteristics of locally accessible dolomite for Engineering applications. Dolomite is a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium (CaCo3, MgCO3). It is one of the important raw materials used in the iron and steel, Ferro-alloys, glass, alloy steels, fertilizer industry, etc. dolomite chips area also used in flooring tiles, Specification of dolomite required for different industries. Dolomite samples from different dolomite mining locations are collected in the Anantapur area for this investigating. SEM, and EDAX are used to study the structure and chemical characteristics of the dolomites, and five sampling sites in the research region are subjected to XRF analysis for the analysis of Major elements. The research findings suggest that dolomite available from the north-eastern section of the research region is being used as a basic refractory material, particularly in the machine-tool and steel-making industries.

A Study on Adverse Transfusion Reactions in a Secondary Care Hospital of Rural India

Aims: The study aims to assess the incidence, causality, and severity of adverse transfusion reactions in patients transfused with blood or blood components at a secondary care referral hospital.
 Study Design: A prospective observational study was conducted in the secondary care referral hospital located in rural settings of Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. The study was conducted for a period of six months from May 2019 to October 2019
 Methodology: All the patients transfused with blood or blood components in the hospital located in Andhra Pradesh during those six months study period were included. The transfusion reactions were reported to the blood bank in the Adverse Transfusion Reaction Report Form (ATRRF). Descriptive statistics were used to represent the adverse transfusion reactions.
 Results: From 2549 transfusions, 30 adverse transfusion reactions were reported (1.17%).Most of the reactions reported were febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions FNHTRs (73.3%) followed by allergic reactions (20.0%). Transfusion reactions were predominant in females 21 (70.0%) than males 9 (30.0%). Most of the reactions were confirmed/definite (46.6%) in causality assessment and moderate (63.3%) in severity assessment. The incidence of adverse transfusion reactions was found to be 1.17%.
 Conclusion: The study concludes that there was a low incidence of adverse transfusion reactions indicating probably underreporting in the healthcare system. This would be due to lack of knowledge regarding importance of surveillance and reporting of adverse transfusion reactions by blood or blood components. There was a need to conduct continuous educational programs (CEP) on hemovigilance system towards healthcare providers to improve the reporting practice. The study provides insights about type of adverse transfusion reactions and their causality and severity. This data helps in motivating the healthcare staff to report ATRs and also to develop strategies to handle preventable ATRs.

Evaluation of Performance of IHI Global Trigger Tool in Identification of Adverse Drug Events: A Prospective Observational Study

Aims: The study aims to evaluate the performance of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) global trigger tool in the identification of adverse drug events.
 Study design: Prospective observational study.
 Place and duration of study: The study was conducted in a General Medicine department of a secondary care referral hospital located in rural, resource-limited settings of Bathalapalli, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. The study was conducted for a period of six months, from June 2019 to November 2019.
 Methodology: A pre-designed data collection form was used to collect the data from the study participants. The required data was obtained from the patient case sheet, lab reports, treatment charts, daily nursing notes, daily physician notes, and direct patient interviews. The global trigger tool developed by IHI was used for the rapid review of inpatient medical records and to generate clues for the identification of ADEs. Descriptive statistics were used to represent the findings of demographics, clinical characteristics, ADE profiles, IHI triggers, and clinical alterations. ADE incidence was shown in a measure of ADE per 1000 patient days. IHI global trigger tool performance in detecting ADE was measured by sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value.
 Results: A total of 192 patients were enrolled in the study. Among them, 225 triggers and 123 ADEs were detected. The incidence of ADEs in the inpatients estimated by the IHI method was estimated as; 20.2 ADEs per 1000 patient days,64.0ADEs per 100 admissions, 56.2percent of admissions with ADE. Majority of ADEs are shown possible relationship with drug (60; 48.7%), level-2 severity (49; 39.8%), and not preventable (52; 42.2%). Most IHI global triggers showed high sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value for detecting ADEs.
 Conclusion: The study shows that most of the triggers in the IHI Trigger tool have shown good accuracy in identifying ADEs. Thus, using the IHI Trigger Tool to identify ADEs can help to improve patient safety. Therefore, the study recommends incorporating IHI global trigger tool in routine, conventional ADE screening techniques to improve the detection rate and promote drug safety.

Native Gold and Au-Pt Alloy in Eclogite Xenoliths of Kalyandurg KL-2 Kimberlite, Anantapur District, South India

Abstract The paper pertains to the studies carried out on the eclogitic xenoliths of KL-2 kimberlite of Kalyandurg kimberlite cluster in south India. Petrographic studies revealed bi-mineralic and kyanite-bearing eclogitic xenoliths in KL-2 kimberlite. The bi-mineralic and kyanite-bearing eclogites of Kalyandurg KL-2 kimberlite pipe show variation in modal proportion of garnet, omphacite, clinopyroxene and kyanite. The paper reports discovery of native gold grains and Au-Pt alloy in the kyanite-bearing eclogite xenoliths of KL-2 kimberlite. The flaky gold grains occurring in the matrix of kyanite-bearing eclogite are homogeneous and two grains of Au-Pt alloy with Au and Pt in the proportion of 9.8:1.2 are also present. This is the first report of gold and gold-platinum alloy specs from eclogitic xenoliths of Indian kimberlites.

Delineation of groundwater potential zones in semi-aridregion (Ananatapuram) using geospatial techniques

The aim of the examination is undertaken to delineation of groundwater potential areas demarked by geospatial technologies in semi arid region, Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. From the processing of LANDSAT data processed in GIS software, prepared a various thematic maps (Geology, Geomorphology, Lineaments, Lineaments density, Drainage, Drainage density, LU/LC, Soils groundwater potential maps). Majority of the focused region occupied with fallow land, shale's and tuff, Pediment-Pedi Plain Complex, dendritic drainage. Geomorphology point of view pediment and pediplain complex which is contain the moderate groundwater, flood plain contains very good groundwater, and denudational hill contains the poor groundwater in the study area. The results of the study are in four categories viz., poor 28.89(9.53%)km2, moderate 145.73(48.09) km2, good92.57 (30.55%)km2 and very good 36.13(11.92%)km2, groundwater potential zones.The groundwater potential map which is helpful for comprehend, planning and management activity of current study area.

A Study of the Value Orientation of Degree College Students

The present study has been conducted to investigate the value orientation of degree college students. The sample consisted of 200-degree college students from Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh. The data so collected was analysed using Mean, S.D. and t-test. The findings of the study revealed that value orientation of degree college students differed with age. The study also showed that the value orientation of degree college students did not differ with reference to sex and type of family variables. The study also projected that the degree College students preferred venturesome values while least preference was shown for traditional values.

Dwakra sangham (SHG) socio-economic's impact on women in Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh

Microfinance supports individuals in modest sums and allows them to participate in financial inclusion. Based on the idea of microfinance, a small group of women form self-help organizations and support themselves equally with government loans, allowing them to grow their enterprises and raise their families' quality of life. Microfinance and business development aid in the eradication of poverty on a local level. The research's objectives are to evaluate the possible function of Dwakrasangham in imparting financial knowledge to women and to assess the improvement in the quality of life of women who are members of Dwakrasangham. The hypothesis is evaluated using an independent t-test, and the research uses primary data. A basic percentage method is used to analyze the data. The results indicate that members' financial understanding has increased significantly, and that earnings generated have enhanced the quality of life of Dwakra Sangham's female members.

An explorative study on usage pattern of pesticides among tomato growing farmers in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh

Tomato is the most important vegetable in the culinary tables of India. Tomato is cultivated widely across the regions. A study was conducted in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh to understand the pest incidence in tomato crop and how the farmers address this problem with application of pesticides. Pesticides on vegetables have a direct ill heath effect on consumers. A total of ninety tomato cultivating farmers were interviewed for the purpose in the district. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis and Garette ranking techniques were used for analyzing the collected information. The usage pattern examined included the nature and type of pesticide used, major pest occurrence, length of usage, seasons of usage, method of pesticide application, timing of application, dosage and source of information for purchase of pesticides. The factors influencing the preference of the farmers towards pesticides were analyzed through factor analysis and four important factors like promotional attributes, flexibility, innovativeness and product acceptance were identified.
