Instrumental neutron activation analysis of trace element contents in the rib bone of healthy men

The effect of age on trace element contents in rib bone of 24 healthy 16–55-year old men was investigated by INAA. Mean values (M ± SEΜ) for mass fraction of Co, Fe, Rb, Sr, and Zn (mg/kg on dry weight basis) were: 0.0030 ± 0.0005, 150 ± 20, 1.70 ± 0.30, 260 ± 30, and 76 ± 4, respectively. The upper limit of mean contents of Ce, Cs, Eu, Hg, and Se were: ≤0.03, ≤0.01, ≤0.001, ≤0.008, and ≤0.03, respectively. The contents of Ag, As, Au, Ba, Br, Cd, Cr, Gd, Hf, La, Lu, Nd, Sb, Sc, Sm, Ta, Tb, Th, U, Yb, and Zr were under detection limits. No changes of trace element contents with age were found.

Comprehensive geochemical identification of highly evolved marine hydrocarbon source rocks: Organic matter, paleoenvironment and development of effective hydrocarbon source rocks

This study analyzed the developing environments of hydrocarbon source rocks in the Ordos Basin and evaluated carbonate rocks as hydrocarbon source rocks and their distributions on account of the fact that China’s marine carbonate rocks as hydrocarbon source rocks are characterized by the intensive thermal evolution and relatively low abundance of organic matter, by taking the Lower Paleozoic of the Ordos Basin for example and in light of the calculated enrichment coefficients of trace elements, the profile analysis of trace element contents, ratios of relevant elements, and stable isotopic compositions and their three-dimensional diagrammatization in combination with the necessary organic parameters. As for the Ordos Basin, TOC=0.2% is an important boundary value. Studies have shown that in the strata TOC>0.2%, V/(V+Ni)>0.50, Zr/Rb 30, Z 0.80, Zn and Mo are enriched with a positive δ13Ccarb excursion. All these indicated a stagnant and stratified sedimentary environment that has low energy, anoxia and high salinity in bottom water. In these strata the geological conditions are good for the preservation of organic matter, hence favoring the development of hydrocarbon source rocks. These strata have δ13Corg 1, V/(V+Ni)<0.50, Rb/K<30, Th/U<0.80, Cu, Zn, etc are depleted, and δ13Corg values range from −24‰ to −28‰. All these facts showed that most of the carbonate rocks or mudstones were formed in high-energy oxidizing environments, thus unfavorable to the development of hydrocarbon source rocks. It is feasible to make use of the geochemical method to comprehensively assess the highly evolved marine carbonates rocks as potential hydrocarbon source rocks and their distributions.

Characterization of Balsamic Vinegar by Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Trace Element Content

To characterize vinegars according to the types prescribed by Italian regulations, 8 trace elements (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were determined. The data collected were successively elaborated by 3 statistical techniques: linear principal component analysis (LPCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and cluster analysis (CA). LDA and LPCA best classified and discriminated the 3 types of vinegar under study, separating traditional balsamic vinegars from the other 2 types, nontraditionally aged balsamic vinegars and common vinegars. The latter 2 types were appreciably distinguished only by LDA through bidimensional analysis of discriminant scores.

Multivariate data analysis of trace element content in animal organs measured by simultaneous atomic absorption spectrometry

The simultaneous determination of trace elements in animal organs offers improved possibilities to characterize the geographical origin of the animal by analyzing its pollution characteristics. Pb, Cd, Ni (GF-AAS) and Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn (F-AAS) in kidneys and livers of cows from different sites have been measured using simultaneous AAS. The correct allocation of cows to specific regions shows that multivariate data analysis provides efficient tools for the geographical classification. The consideration of absorbance rather than concentration as the data input simplified the analytical procedures by omitting the calibration step.

Analysis of trace element content in tree cores by PIXE

Nine tree cores of 8 to 12 cm in length from spruce have been scanned using PIXE as a microsonde of millimetre size for the contents and profiles of trace elements. Eighteen elements have been found at ppm to 1000 ppm level. The preliminary statistical analysis of the raw data led to some interesting results. The calcium content decreases with increasing age of the tree. There is a strong correlation between the calcium content and the manganese and strontium content. Several of the core samples have high concentration peaks within one or a few annual rings for the elements iron, titanium, copper, lead and zinc. All peaks can be correlated to a rapid decrease in the growth rate of the tree.
