Carbon footprint analysis of wastewater treatment processes coupled with sludge in situ reduction

The goal of this study was to assess the impacts or benefits of sludge in situ reduction (SIR) within wastewater treatment processes with relation to global warming potential in wastewater treatment plants, with a comprehensive consideration of wastewater and sludge treatment. The anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) and the sludge process reduction activated sludge (SPRAS), two typical SIR technologies, were used to compare the carbon footprint analysis results with the conventional anaerobic - anoxic - oxic (AAO) process. Compared to the AAO, the ASSR with a typical sludge reduction efficiency (SRE) of 30 % increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1.1 - 1.7 %, while the SPRAS with a SRE of 74 % reduced GHG emissions by 12.3 - 17.6 %. Electricity consumption (0.025 - 0.027 kg CO2-eq/m3), CO2 emissions (0.016 - 0.059 kg CO2-eq/m3), and N2O emissions (0.009 - 0.023 kg CO2-eq/m3) for the removal of secondary substrates released from sludge decay in the SIR processes were the major contributor to the increased GHG emissions from the wastewater treatment system. By lowering sludge production and the organic matter content in the sludge, the SIR processes significantly decreased the carbon footprints associated with sludge treatment and disposal. The threshold SREs of the ASSR for GHG reduction were 27.7 % and 34.6 % for the advanced dewatering - sanitary landfill and conventional dewatering - drying-incinerating routes, respectively. Overall, the SPRAS process could be considered as a cost-effective and sustainable low-carbon SIR technology for wastewater treatment.

Microbial community structure of an anaerobic side-stream coupled anoxic-aerobic membrane bioreactor (AOMBR-ASSR) for an in-situ sludge reduction process.

With the anoxic-aerobic membrane bioreactor (AO-MBR, CP) as a reference, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to reveal the characteristics of the microbial community structure in the anaerobic side-stream anoxic-aerobic membrane bioreactor sludge reduction process (AOMBR-ASSR, SRP). After the stable operation of two processes for 120days, the average removal efficiencies of TN and TP in the effluent of SRP were increased by 5.6% and 29.8%, respectively. The observed sludge yields (Yobs) of the two processes were 0.14 and 0.17gMLSS/(gCOD), respectively, and the sludge reduction rate of the SRP was 19.5%. Compared to the CP, the microbial richness and diversity index of SRP increased significantly. Chloroflexi, which is responsible for the degradation of organic substances under an anaerobic condition, seemed to be reduced in the SRP. Meanwhile, other phyla that involved in the nitrogen cycle, such as Nitrospirae and Planctomycetes, were found to be more abundant in the SRP than in the CP. A total of 21 identified classes were observed, and primarily hydrolyzed fermented bacteria (Sphingobacteriia, Betaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria) and slow-growing microorganisms (Bacilli) were accumulated in the SRP. At the genus level, the inserted anaerobic side-stream reactor favored the hydrolyzed bacteria (Saprospiraceae, Rhodobacter and Candidatus_Competibacter), fermented bacteria (Lactococcus and Trichococcus), and slow-growing microorganisms (Dechloromonas and Haliangium), which play a crucial role in the sludge reduction. Furthermore, the enrichment of bacterial species related to nitrogen (Nitrospir and Azospira) provided the potential for nitrogen removal, while the anaerobic environment of the side-stream reactor promoted the enrichment of phosphorus-accumulating organisms.

The anaerobic exposure time (AET) as a novel process parameter in the anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR)-based process for excess sludge minimization

Minimization of excess sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants has become a topical theme nowadays. One of the most used approaches to achieve this aim is the anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) process. This is considered affected by the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the anaerobic reactor, the anaerobic sludge loading rate (ASLR) and the sludge interchange ratio (SIR), although, studies available in the literature did not reflect a clear relationship with the sludge minimization yields.To overcome this, a novel parameter namely anaerobic exposure time (AET) was defined and related to reduction of the observed yield coefficient (Yobs) in a lab-scale plant implementing the ASSR process. Furthermore, the AET was validated by performing a detailed and thorough review of previous literature. Excess sludge production was successfully reduced (10–60 %) with the increase of the AET (7.9–13 h/d), although maintaining the same HRT in the ASSR and a constant sludge interchange ratio (SIR) (100 %). A strong correlation (Pearson = 0.763) was found between the AET, and the Yobs reduction reported in previous studies, also indicating a linear relationship (R2 = 0.92) between these parameters. Contrarily, the correlation between the Yobs with the ASLR and the ASSR-HRT resulted moderate (Pearson = 0.186) or weak (Pearson=−0.346), respectively. Overall, while operating at low AET (< 6 h), maintenance and uncoupling metabolism were found the main sludge reduction mechanisms. Increasing the AET (>8 h) favoured the occurrence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) hydrolysis and endogenous decay mechanisms, which improved excess sludge reduction. To conclude, the AET could be considered a reliable parameter to be used for design or control purposes for the ASSR-based process.

Influence of the Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) Process on Methane Production by Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

The present study evaluated different sludge-reduction mechanisms in the oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process in terms of their effects on methane productivity by anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Two different layouts were investigated for the sludge return from an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) to the anoxic (scheme A) or the aerobic (scheme B) reactor of a pre-denitrification plant. Biochemical methane-potential (BMP) assays performed on the excess sludge revealed that scheme A promoted an overall increase of methane production in the OSA (20 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, +19%), although compared with a control CAS plant a significant decrease in the excess sludge production (31%) was obtained. Operating conditions in scheme A caused the occurrence of cell lysis and EPS hydrolysis, thereby increasing the biodegradability of sludge. In contrast, scheme B favoured the occurrence of uncoupling and a maintenance metabolism that did not involve sludge hydrolysis. Consequently, despite a higher reduction of excess sludge (82%), a significant decrease in methane productivity in the OSA (4 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, −41%) was observed. Based on the results, implementing the OSA process may allow high levels of methane production by anaerobic digestion to be maintained if specific sludge-reduction mechanisms are triggered in the waterline, also raising the possibility of co-digestion with other feedstocks.

A comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis of innovative methods employing cutting-edge technology to improve sludge reduction directly in wastewater handling units

Sludge reduction technologies can be used as an alternative plan to dispose of excess sludge in wastewater treatment plants, but the sustainability of these strategies is a challenging task. In this study, the potential environmental implications of innovative technologies based on lab-scale results published in the literature were assessed from the life cycle assessment (LCA) view point. Accordingly, three different scenarios using various sludge reduction mechanisms were selected and analyzed. The scenarios include (1) an integrated oxic-setting-anaerobic and ultrasound process; (2) a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with an anaerobic side-stream reactor to its return activated sludge line; and (3) the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic system in conjunction with an ozone reactor. LCA was conducted through the CML-IA (baseline 2000) method. A sensitivity analysis was also done in order to determine how changes in the inputs are affecting the overall sustainability of the system. The environmental impact evaluation of three scenarios indicated that the integrated SBR with an anaerobic side-stream reactor was the most efficient and sustainable alternative in environmental terms. Although the upgraded SBR system was not the best alternative in terms of sludge reduction (65 % versus 78 % for Scenario 1 and 70 % for Scenario 3), it showed the highest overall performance and also demonstrated the lowest environmental impact compared to other scenarios. Because the scenarios studied were cutting-edge and provided novel sludge reduction strategies based on lab-scale results published in the literature, a comprehensive economic analysis and scale-up considerations are recommended to effectively assist decision-makers in guiding the development of emerging technologies.

Sludge decay kinetics and metagenomic analysis uncover discrepant metabolic mechanisms in two different sludge in situ reduction systems

A comparative study was conducted between an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) process and a sludge process reduction (SPR) activated sludge (SPRAS) process for uncovering crucial metabolic mechanisms governing sludge reduction. Both of two processes were efficient in removing pollutants, while the SPRAS (62.3 %) obtained much higher sludge reduction than the ASSR (27.9 %). The highest rate coefficients of sludge decay, heterotroph lysis and particles hydrolysis were 0.106, 0.219 and 0.054 d−1 in the SPR module, followed by ASSR with coefficients of 0.060, 0.135 and 0.047 d−1. The SPR module achieved an 81.9 % higher sludge decay mass with a 32.8 % smaller volume than the ASSR module. The SPR module preferentially enriched hydrolytic/fermentative and slow-growing bacteria. Metagenomic analysis revealed that SPR strengthened the key hydrolases and L-lactate dehydrogenase in the glycolysis pathways and weakened the citrate cycle, inducing metabolic uncoupling due to the reduced biosynthesis of ATP. Inserting ASSR only altered the ATP biosynthesis pathway, but maintenance metabolism was dominant for sludge reduction, with a long sludge retention time prolonging the food chain for predation.

A review of sludge production in South Africa municipal wastewater treatment plants, analysis of handling cost and potential minimization methods

Abstract The government of South Africa through the department of water and sanitation has installed numerous activated sludge systems in most of the municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) to ensure adequate sanitation. However, secondary sludge generation and handling is a major challenge of the AS process. This work reviews the sludge production potential in selected regions in South Africa including Midvaal, Emfuleni and Lesedi municipalities. Further, the sludge handling cost and potential methods of sludge minimization are discussed. This study found that the selected MWWTPs discharge effluent volume of between 3 and 65 ML/day with average COD of about 350 mg/L leading to sludge production of between 5 and 23 tons/day with an estimated handling cost of €57,000 to €320,000 per year. Some of the technologies reviewed for sludge minimization to cut down plant operation cost include chemical oxidation using ozone and potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), application of oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process, anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (AAO) combined with K2FeO4 oxidation side stream reactor (SSR), SANI® technology and use of anaerobic side stream reactor (ASSR) in the conventional activated sludge (AS) line.

Integrating electrochemical pretreatment (EPT) and side-stream sulfidogenesis with conventional activated sludge process: Performance, microbial community and sludge reduction mechanisms

• Coupling EPT and sulfidogenic side-stream reactor (ESSR) with CAS process was studied. • EPT at 15 V/5min with 125 mg S/L of SO 4 2− dosage improved sludge reduction. • The ESSR could be designed with a very short SRT of 2.5 days. • The integrated process (ESSR-CAS) was operated over 200 d with good performance. • Possible reasons for fast sludge hydrolysis in ESSR-CAS were discussed. Recently, inserting an anaerobic side-stream reactor into a conventional activated sludge (CAS) process for upgrading biological wastewater treatment plants with in-situ sludge reduction function has been extensively studied. A typical example is an oxic-settling anaerobic (OSA) process, which can achieve efficient sludge reduction, but requires ample space, limiting its application potential. Optimizing the conventional OSA process towards compact and energy-efficient is necessary. This paper studied a new method by integrating electrochemical pretreatment (EPT) and sulfidogenesis-enhanced anaerobic treatment with a conventional OSA process to achieve considerable in-situ sludge reduction with a limited side-stream size requirement (i.e. short sludge retention time (SRT)). The proposed idea was verified experimentally – first, batch experiments were conducted to determine the effective sulfate concentration for the EPT and sulfidogenic side-stream reactor (ESSR); then, the ESSR-CAS process (upgrading CAS with a new ESSR) and a stand-alone CAS process (control) were operated in parallel for 200 days. The experimental results showed that: The new ESSR, with approximately 125 mg S/L of sulfate dosed and 5 min electrochemical sludge pretreatment at 15 V, can successfully accelerate anaerobic reactions, resulting in a short SRT of 2.5 days. The ESSR-CAS process can reduce sludge production by 61%, with high soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of 96% and 70% respectively. The possible mechanisms of ESSR for the augment of sludge hydrolysis (sludge floc disintegration, extracellular polymer destruction, and cell structure breakage) as well as the economic considerations of this new sulfur-cycle bioprocess are discussed.

Elucidating the intensifying effect of introducing influent to an anaerobic side-stream reactor on sludge reduction of the coupled membrane bioreactors

Three anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactors (AO-MBRs) coupled with the anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) with different influent flow distribution ratios (IFDRs) were assessed to elucidate how IFDR in the ASSR affected pollutants removal, sludge reduction, membrane fouling, and potential co-occurrence network of microorganisms. When the IFDR in the ASSR was increased from 0% (ASSR0-MBR), to 25% (ASSR25-MBR) and 75% (ASSR75-MBR), chemical oxygen demand removal was enhanced and nutrient removal was comparable. Compared to ASSR0-MBR, ASSR25- and ASSR75-MBR further improved the sludge reduction by 7.6% and 10.9%, respectively. ASSR25-MBR followed cake-complete model due to the weak membrane surface scouring and high concentration of extracellular polymeric substances, while ASSR0- and ASSR75-MBR fitted cake-standard model. The increased IFDR in the ASSR boosted the relative abundance of hydrolytic and slow-growing bacteria. The co-occurrence networks of sludge reduction, nutrient removal and membrane fouling propensity indicated that the symbiotic relationships were dominant.

Membrane fouling in anoxic/oxic membrane reactors coupled with carrier-enhanced anaerobic side-stream reactor: Effects of anaerobic hydraulic retention time and mechanism insights

Membrane fouling mechanism of membrane reactors (MBR) coupled with anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) has been extensively studied, while the homologous mechanism in carrier-enhanced ASSR process remained unclear. Anoxic/oxic MBR and three carrier-enhanced ASSR coupled anoxic/oxic MBRs (ASSR-MBRs) were operated in parallel to investigate the effect of hydraulic retention time of ASSR (HRTSR) on membrane filtration performance and fouling tendency. ASSR-MBR with HRTSR of 2.5, 5.0 and 6.7 h achieved the sludge reduction efficiency of 24.6%, 32.2%, and 41.0%. The foulant layer resistances were in the order of anoxic/oxic MBR (5.40 ± 0.32 × 1012 m−1) > ASSR2.5-MBR (5.39 ± 0.30 × 1012 m−1) > ASSR6.7-MBR (3.33 ± 0.42 × 1012 m−1) > ASSR5.0-MBR (2.38 ± 0.45 × 1012 m−1). The improved sludge dewaterability and more stable sludge structure in carrier-enhanced ASSR caused membrane fouling less severe than that in anoxic/oxic MBR. The results of extracellular polymeric substances identified incomplete and over hydrolysis of cell lysate at HRTSR of 2.5 and 6.7 h, respectively. CLSM results indicated that ASSR-MBR with HRTSR of 5.0 h achieved the best filtration performance because of the enhanced protein degradation ability of membrane surface microbes. MiSeq sequencing indicated that fouling-eased group bacteria (responsible for the alleviation of membrane fouling) were enriched in ASSR-MBRs, while fouling-caused group bacteria (responsible for the aggravation of membrane fouling), such as filamentous bacteria, were dominant in anoxic/oxic MBR. This study bridged a gap between sludge redcution and membrane fouling in carrier-enhanced ASSR-MBR.

Bacterial and Microfauna Mechanisms for Sludge Reduction in Carrier-Enhanced Anaerobic Side-Stream Reactors Revealed by Metagenomic Sequencing Analysis.

Packing carriers into the anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) can enhance sludge reduction and save footprint by investigating ASSR-coupled membrane bioreactors (AP-MBRs) under different hydraulic residence times of the ASSR (HRTSR). Three AP-MBRs and an anoxic-aerobic MBR (AO-MBR) showed efficient chemical oxygen demand (>94.2%) and ammonium nitrogen removal (>99.3%). AP-MBRs have higher (p < 0.05) total nitrogen (61.4-67.7%) and total phosphorus (57.5-63.8%) removal than AO-MBRs (47.8 and 47.7%). AP-MBRs achieved sludge reduction efficiencies of 11.8, 31.8, and 36.2% at HRTSR values of 2.5, 5.0, and 6.7 h. Packing carriers greatly improved sludge reduction under low HRTSR and is promising for accelerating sludge reduction in compact space. Metagenomic sequencing analysis showed that genes responsible for metabolism were enriched in AO-MBRs, while genes related to cellular motility and cell signaling were more abundant in the AP-MBRs. A longevity-regulating pathway showed that long lifespan provided more opportunities for worms to prey bacteria. Microscopic examination revealed that some specific protozoa (Arcella, Clathrulina, Aspidisca, Litonotus, Chiloclonella, and Vorticella) and metazoa (Rotaria and Aeolosoma hemprichi) were enriched in ASSRs. Aeolosoma hemprichi was only detected in ASSRs, and unique Cylops appeared on carriers. These results contribute to growing understanding of micrometabolic mechanisms including functional genes and microfauna-driving sludge reduction.

Responses of microbial structures, functions and metabolic pathways for nitrogen removal to different hydraulic retention times in anaerobic side-stream reactor coupled membrane bioreactors

Synchronous sludge reduction and nitrogen removal have attracted increasing attention, while the underlying mechanisms of diverse nitrogen metabolism within the complicated processes remain unclear. Four anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactors, three of which were upgraded by anaerobic side-stream reactors (ASSR) and carriers (APSSR-MBRs), were operated to determine effects of hydraulic retention time of ASSRs. APSSR-MBRs achieved more significant nitrogen removal and higher nitrate uptake rate because of more denitrifying bacteria and the supernumerary release of secondary substrates. Ammonia uptake rate showed the diverse Nitrospira preceded over anaerobic decay and sulfide inhibition in the ASSR, and made the reactor exhibit higher nitrification capacity. Metagenomic analysis indicated that APSSR-MBRs showed higher abundances of genes related to nitrogen consumption processes, and higher abundances on the carriers, confirming their pivotal roles in nitrogen metabolism. This study provided novel perspectives to build a bridge between process model and nitrogen metabolism in the sludge reduction system..

Sludge reduction by an anaerobic side-stream reactor process: A full-scale application

In the present paper, a new process, whose acronym is UTN (University of Trento) system, is proposed and tested at full scale for reducing the amount of sludge of the wastewater treatment plant. The UTN system allows sludge reduction in conventional activated sludge (CAS) due to the cell lysis, the sludge decay and, above all, to the selection of slow growing microorganism. In this study, the first full-scale UTN system was tested by retrofitting an existing wastewater treatment plant located in Marmirolo (Lombardia, Italy) having a treatment capacity of 6,000 population equivalent (PE). Performances of the UTN system were evaluated in terms of sludge reduction, together with organic carbon and nutrients removal efficiencies. Results obtained over 10 month of monitoring period, divided in period I (7 months) and period II (3 months), characterized by different operative conditions, have reported a specific sludge production of 0.37 and 0.23 kg TSS per kg of COD removed, respectively; which is 50% and 69% lower than that observed in the reference period when the plant worked under conventional activated sludge process. Furthermore, results revealed that the UTN system allows a high removal of wastewater typical pollutants, without causing negative effects on the effluent quality, always ensuring compliance with the regulatory discharge limits.

Investigation of sludge solubilization and phosphorous release in anaerobic side-stream reactor with a low pressure swirling jet hydrodynamic cavitation treatment

In this study, the feasibility of a novel hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) system was evaluated to speed up the biological sludge reduction mechanisms of the anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) process. In the first part of the research, HC was performed on ASSR sludge by using a low pressure swirling jet cavitation system, named Ecowirl – EW 25. The effects of the Ecowirl – EW 25 system, in terms of sludge solubilisation, disintegration degree and microbial activity, were investigated considering two different injection plates, respectively, with two and four injection slots and four different treatment times, from 10 to 80 minutes. The best results were achieved after 80 min of HC treatment, using the plate with two injection slots and with a specific supplied energy (SE) equal to 12670 kJ kg TSS-1. Respirometric tests showed an increase in the readily biodegradable COD through the HC treatment of sludge. Moreover, low endogenous decay rates (bH) were measured on the ASSR sludge for SE lower than 6340 kJ kg TSS-1 revealing that the sludge solubilization was due to a modification in the floc structure rather than a decrease in the biomass viability. In the second part of the research, the solubilized sludge, after HC treatment, was used as carbon substrate for the biological activity of bacteria into the ASSR, such as total phosphate accumulating organisms (TPAOs). Results revealed that the phosphorous releasing and uptake rate, obtained using the HC treated sludge as carbon source, were comparable with those obtained with the addition of a ready biodegradable carbon source such as acetate.

Understanding mechanisms of sludge in situ reduction in anaerobic side-stream reactor coupled membrane bioreactors packed with carriers at different filling fractions

An anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor (AO) and three pilot-scale anaerobic side stream reactors (ASSR) coupled MBRs (ASSR-MBRs), packed with 0%, 25% and 50% carriers in ASSRs, were continuously operated to study the mechanisms for sludge reduction. Four systems showed efficient COD and NH4+-N removal, while packing carriers significantly enhanced nitrogen removal. 25% filling fraction (AP25) achieved the highest sludge reduction efficiency of 50.5% compared to 0% (21.7%) and 50% (39.7%). Compared to ASSR-MBR, carriers enhanced the release of dissolved organic matters, and accelerated the secretion of enzyme for cell lysis and hydrolysis. In AP25, the presence of carriers prompted the formation of environment propitious to sludge reduction in bulk sludge. AP25 tended to enrich hydrolytic, fermentative and denitrifying bacteria to accelerate hydrolysis process, while excessive carriers had negative effect on biomass stability and movement of carriers.

Repurposing hydrolysis acidification tank in municipal wastewater treatment plants for sludge reduction and biological nutrient removal

The hydrolysis acidification tank (HAT) was usually selected as the pretreatment of combined industrial and domestic wastewater for municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs). Strict source control and urbanization substantially reduced industrial wastewater fed into MWWTPs, and thus HAT should be repurposed. Long-term survey of a full-scale MWWTP showed HAT had adverse effects on biological nutrient removal (BNR) of subsequent activated sludge systems because it increased difficulty of BNR owing to carbon source loss, and generated sulfide preferentially combining with ammonia monooxygenase in anaerobic phase of posterior biological treatment process to significantly inhibit activities of nitrifiers. Full-scale experiment of bypassing HAT achieved more efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and thus three pilot-scale systems were designed to investigate process performance by upgrading HAT to anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) and anaerobic main-stream reactor (AMSR). The three systems were equally effective in chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus and ammonium nitrogen removal. Upgrading HAT to ASSR and AMSR enhanced total nitrogen removal from 63.3 to 65.1 and 72.0%, and achieved sludge reduction of 15.4 and 40.5%. Intrasystem flow analysis confirmed that upgrading increased proportion of COD utilized for denitrification. MiSeq sequencing results showed that AMSR enriched hydrolytic and predatory bacteria for sludge reduction, while ASSR favored the growth of slow growers. The results confirmed that AMSR is a cost-effective and advantageous strategy for HAT upgrading with higher nitrogen removal, efficient sludge reduction, and improved sludge settleability and dewaterability.

Effects of bioporous carriers on the performance and microbial community structure in side-stream anaerobic membrane bioreactors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a volcanic rock porous carrier (VRPC) on sludge reduction, pollutant removal, and microbial community structure in an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR). Three lab-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs), including an anoxic-oxic MBR, which served as the control (C-MBR), an ASSR-coupled MBR (A-MBR), and an A-MBR filled with VRPC (FA-MBR) were stably and simultaneously operated for 120 days. The effect of the three reactors on the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was almost negligible (all greater than 95%), but the average removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus was significantly improved by the insertion of an ASSR, especially when the ASSR was filled with VRPC. Finally, A-MBR and FA-MBR achieved 16.2% and 26.4% sludge reduction rates, with observed sludge yields of 0.124 and 0.109 g mixed liquid suspended solids/g COD, respectively. Illumina MiSeq sequencing revealed that microbial diversity and richness were highest in the VRPC, indicating that a large number of microorganisms formed on the carrier surface in the form of a biofilm. Abundant denitrifying bacteria (Azospira, Comamonadaceae_unclassified, and Flavobacterium) were immobilized on the carrier biofilm, which contributed to increased nitrogen removal. The addition of a VRPC to the ASSR successfully immobilized abundant hydrolytic, fermentative, and slow-growing microorganisms, which all contributed to reductions in sludge yield.

Effects of interchange ratio on sludge reduction and microbial community structures in an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process with combined anaerobic side-stream reactor.

Oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process is effective in minimizing sludge production, by inserting an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) in the recycling bypass. Interchange ratio (IR), the quantity ratio of sludge entering the ASSR to the sludge in the main stream reactors, is one of the most important parameters for OSA process. In the present study, a laboratory-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) process combined with an ASSR (A2/O-ASSR) was operated for 366 days in parallel with a conventional A2/O process to investigate the effects of IR on sludge reduction. IR was assigned values of 5%, 8%, 10%, and 15%, and the A2/O-ASSR process achieved 14.0%, 16.0%, 24.1%, and 13.7% of sludge reduction, respectively. At the optimum IR of 10%, high through-put sequencing analysis showed that the microbes responsible for pollutant removal and ubiquitous in wastewater treatment remained predominant in the two systems, and slow-growing microbes related to hydrolysis, nitrogen and phosphorus removal increased in the A2/O-ASSR process, which probably played a key role in sludge reduction. 40.6-58.6% of sludge reduction was caused by sludge decay in the ASSR. The tiny amount of extracellular polymeric substance released in the A2/O-ASSR process was subthreshold to cause remarkable sludge reduction.

Evaluating influence of filling fraction of carriers packed in anaerobic side-stream reactors on membrane fouling and microbial community of the coupled membrane bioreactors

An anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactors (AO-MBR) and three identical anaerobic side-stream reactor coupled with anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactors (ASSR-MBR) were constructed and operated in parallel to investigate the appropriate filling fraction of carriers packed in ASSR, influences on pollutants removal, sludge reduction, membrane fouling and microbial community of ASSR-MBR. Inserting ASSR achieved efficient COD removal and nitrification, and packing carriers in ASSR obtained the highest sludge reduction efficiency of 50.5 % at filling fraction of 25 %. Compared to AO-MBR, inserting ASSR without carriers induced the release of viscous components in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the formation of calcium carbonate-related bacteria on membrane surface, and thus deteriorated membrane fouling. Packing carriers with 25 % filling fraction promoted the hydrolysis of soluble microbial products and EPS, whilst reduced the viscoelasticity of sludge flocs. Higher filling fraction of 50 % increased the shear forces to the biofilm and biomarkers related to membrane fouling, and thus showed little improvement to alleviate membrane fouling. MiSeq sequencing revealed that although it enriched in the bulk sludge of conventional ASSR-MBR and the coupled reactor with filling fraction of 50 %, the floc-forming, hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria were more inclined to attach on the membrane surface and alleviate fouling process.

Biological nutrient removal in the anaerobic side-stream reactor coupled membrane bioreactors for sludge reduction

An anoxic-aerobic membrane bioreactor (AO-MBR), an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) coupled MBR (A-MBR), and an MBR with ASSR packed with carriers (AP-MBR) were operated parallelly to investigate biological nutrient removal, microbial community structure and mass balance of nutrients in sludge reduction systems. Compared to AO-MBR, A-MBR and AP-MBR were both efficient in COD and NH4+-N removal, had significantly higher nitrogen removal, reduced sludge production by 35.0% and 45.9%, but deteriorated biological phosphorus removal. Nitrosomonadaceae and Nitrospira were major bacteria responsible for ammonium and nitrite oxidation in the three systems. Inserting ASSR and packing carriers both favored denitrifying bacteria enrichment and organic substances release, and thus resulted in higher nitrate uptake rate (NUR) in the anoxic tank. Higher endogenous NUR in ASSR than in anoxic tank also indicated that ASSR and carriers both accelerated sludge decay. Denitrification and sludge reduction occurred in ASSR played important roles in biological nutrient removal.
