For some time it has been known that there are eosinophil cells in the secretion of the nose of patients, suffering from allergic rhinitis. The secretion, subject to examination, is not homogeneous, however, which brings about an uneven distribution of cells, with regard to quantity and quality, when the cells are spread out on the slide and, consequently, differential counting of such substance is unreliable in most cases.For this reason, we have worked out the following, method of homogenization. During a secretionary attack, the patient is requested to blow out the greatest possible quantity of secretion into a flat-bottomed glass of 2 × 5.5 cm3. Before this 1 drop of 10 per cent neutralized ammonium benzoate has been dried in the glass in order to prevent decomposition of the secretion before the examination.
