Dextromethorphan‐bupropion shows efficacy in two depression trials

A medication combining dextromethorphan and bupropion was more efficacious than an active comparator and placebo in reducing depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder, a pair of trials has found. Remission rates with dextromethorphan‐bupropion separated from the comparator and placebo by week 2 of treatment in each study, according to researchers. Results of the Phase 2 trial of the medication were published online May 18 in the American Journal of Psychiatry, and results of the Phase 3 trial were published online May 30 in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

An impact factor is a bibliometric calculation that describes the level of importance of a journal’s published output on the scientific literature by measuring how much the work it publishes is cited by others.The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) remains an elite publication in all of science, as this year its impact factor rose above 19. The score can be interpreted as an average, where every article that the journal published in the reporting period (that is, during the years 2019 and 2020) was cited by more than 19 articles in 2021. This impact factor score ranks AJP among the highest not just in the category of psychiatry, but also among all the 21,430 indexed journals in scientific, technical, engineering, and medical publishing. AJP’s impact factor of 19.242 places it in the top 200 of all journal titles, ahead of 99% of the rest of the publishing world.The new impact factor for Psychiatric Services rose above 4 to 4.157. Of the journals included in the Health Policy & Services category, Psychiatric Services is the highest ranked mental health journal. Lack of Representation in Psychiatric Research: A Data-Driven Example From Scientific Articles Published in 2019 and 2020 in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

The authors examined representation and accuracy of descriptions of sociodemographic identities in psychiatric research through quantifying data contained in recently published articles from a high-impact psychiatry journal. Sociodemographic data were aggregated from articles (i.e., studies that provide information on individual samples) published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 2019 and 2020 (N=125). Articles were coded by two raters for sociodemographic data, acknowledgment of lack of representation as a limitation, and focus on health disparities or inequities. While 90% of studies provided the age of participants and 84% provided information about the sex/gender of participants, only 43% presented information about the racial or ethnicity identities of participants. One study reported the sexual identity of participants. Lack of representation relative to 2019 U.S. Census data was found for multiple racial groups, Latino/Hispanic individuals, and women (genetic studies only). Only 25% of studies acknowledged lack of representation as a limitation, and two studies focused on health disparities or inequities. These findings highlight a need to increase representation in psychiatric research and improve accuracy of language when describing the sociodemographic characteristics of participants.

Study: Digital therapy may improve cognitive impairment in adults with MDD

New research involving video game digital‐based therapy has found significant improvement in cognitive functioning in adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) who are being treated with antidepressant therapy, according to researchers of a study published online April 12 in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Ketamine infusions promote abstinence in patients with alcohol use disorder

Combining ketamine with mindfulness‐based relapse prevention therapy resulted in a significant increase in alcohol abstinence among patients with severe alcohol use disorder, a Phase 2 placebo‐controlled study has found. However, ketamine treatment, which consisted of three weekly infusions, did not differ significantly from placebo in improving alcohol relapse rates at 6‐month follow‐up. Study results were published online January 11, 2022, in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Review finds inadequate research base for cannabinoids in psychiatric care

A comprehensive review of studies published through July 2021 has found limited evidence supporting the use of cannabis or cannabinoids in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The strongest evidence for use of cannabinoids appears to be for the management of chronic pain. Results were published online Dec. 8, 2021, in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Deaths by intentional ODs increase among young people

Intentional drug overdose deaths — suicides — have increased in young people aged 15–24, according to a study published this month. The study also found women were more likely to die from intentional drug overdoses. Cannabis, alcohol, and psychosis links scrutinized by AJP

The January issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) focuses on the interactions between alcohol use, cannabis use, substance use disorders (SUDs), and other psychiatric illnesses. One of the biggest questions for clinicians treating patients with first‐episode psychosis when cannabis has been involved is the chicken‐and‐egg question — was the psychosis brought on by cannabis use or was the patient using it to self‐medicate?
