Climate change impacts on the distribution of coastal lobsters

Coastal lobsters support important fisheries all over the world, but there is evidence that climate-induced changes may jeopardize some stocks. Here we present the first global forecasts of changes in coastal lobster species distribution under climate change, using an ensemble of ecological niche models (ENMs). Global changes in richness were projected for 125 coastal lobster species for the end of the century, using a stabilization scenario (4.5 RCP). We compared projected changes in diversity with lobster fisheries data and found that losses in suitable habitat for coastal lobster species were mainly projected in areas with high commercial fishing interest, with species projected to contract their climatic envelope between 40 and 100%. Higher losses of spiny lobsters are projected in the coasts of wider Caribbean/Brazil, eastern Africa and Indo-Pacific region, areas with several directed fisheries and aquacultures, while clawed lobsters are projected to shifts their envelope to northern latitudes likely affecting the North European, North American and Canadian fisheries. Fisheries represent an important resource for local and global economies and understanding how they might be affected by climate change scenarios is paramount when developing specific or regional management strategies.

Imperiled Species Policy Is a Critical Issue for AFS

Abstract The American Fisheries Society (AFS) has a long history of scientific, management, and policy interests in the U.S. Endangered Species Act and other federal, tribal, state, provincial, and international laws pertaining to imperiled species. For decades, AFS has hosted technical sessions, developed policy, and participated in critical discussions pertaining to imperiled species conservation. For this reason, the AFS leadership elected to update the Societys three policy statements on imperiled species, which are no longer official under AFS bylaws because they expired as official AFS policy in 1987, 1993, and 1999. As part of the effort to update, here we (1) review the elements of imperilment, (2) present the history of AFS engagement on imperiled species policy issues, and (3) set the goals to update this policy and the AFS policy process moving forward. Our intent is to launch a dialogue that leads to an AFS policy statement on imperiled species, supported by primary literature, that can be updated with minor revisions every five years.

The Global Repercussions of the 1947 Symposium on Fish Populations in Toronto: Scientific Networks and the Over-fishing Question

A relatively small, contentious, and long-forgotten meeting, the 1947 Symposium on Fish Populations, had enormous and decades-long repercussions for global fisheries policies. Convened in Toronto by Archibald Gowanlock Huntsman, former director of the Atlantic Biological Station, it drew together leading North American fisheries biologists and professional fishermen. By exposing the lack of agreement on, or understanding of, the nature of overfishing, this meeting made it difficult for later scientists to challenge pro-industry fisheries policies. The published proceedings, in-demand by a tight network of fisheries scientists across North America and the North Atlantic, guaranteed this meeting’s disproportionate and unfortunate impact.

Introduction to Bayesian Modeling and Inference for Fisheries Scientists

Bayesian inference is everywhere, from one of the most recent journal articles in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society to the decision‐making process you undergo when selecting a new fishing spot. Bayesian inference is the only statistical paradigm that synthesizes prior knowledge with newly collected data to facilitate a more informed decision—and it is being used at an increasing rate in almost every area of our profession. Thus, the goal of this article is to provide fisheries managers, educators, and students with a conceptual introduction to Bayesian inference. We do not assume that the reader is familiar with Bayesian inference; however, we do assume that the reader has completed an introductory biostatistics course. To this end, we review the conceptual foundation of Bayesian inference without the use of complex equations; present one example of using Bayesian inference to compare relative weight between two time periods; present one example of using prior information about von Bertalanffy growth parameters to improve parameter estimation; and, finally, suggest literature that can help to develop the skills needed to use Bayesian inference in your own management or research program.
