AbstractThe influence of phenol, p‐cresol, o‐cresol, m‐cresol, pyrogallol, résorcinol and P‐thiocresel on the corrosion of A1 3 S in 0.5 n hydrochlorid acid has been studied; the cathodic behaviour was investigated by a galvanostatic method. The efficiency of the inhibitors depends from the substituents and their position in the ring. It decreases in the order p‐thiocresol — py‐rogallol — resorcinol — phenol—p‐cresol — m‐cresol — o‐cresol. The inhibitors are preferentially adsorbed at the cathodic sites.

Action of phenols on the corrosion of 3S aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions

AbstractThe inhibiting effect of some phenols on the corrosion of iron in 0.5 N hydrochloric acid depends from the concentration and the constitution of the particular inhibitor. The effect decreases in the following order; p‐thiocresol > pyrogallol > resorcinol > phenol > p‐cresol > m‐cresol > o‐cresol. The low inhibiting power of the cresols appears to be due to the cresol appears to be due to the electron donating capacity of th CH3 groups and their interaction with OH groups which is an electron donator, too. The SH and OH groups appear to facilitate the adsorption on cathodic sites as do the π‐electrons of the aromatic annulus.

A study on the effect of some carbonyl compounds on the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution

It was found that chloral hydrate, methyl ethyl ketone, pinacolone and mesityl oxide have an inhibitive effect on the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution. Adsorption of these carbonyl compounds occurs in two steps yielding a monolayer of the adsorbate on the metal surface followed by the formation of a second layer on the primarily adsorbed monolayer. The results indicate that all the compounds can be classified as weakly adsorbed substances.

Nicotinic Acid as an Inhibitor of Corrosion of Pure Aluminium in Hydrochloric Acid Solutions

Nicotinic acid has been found to be a fairly satisfactory inhibitor for the corrosion of pure aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions, the efficiency being in the 59 to 98% range. Anode polarisation is low, whereas the cathode polarisation is considerable. The corrosion process seems to be essentially under cathodic control.

AbstractThe corrosion rates and inhibitor efficiencies have been determined for 99.5% aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions, with the following inhibitors : acridine, thiourea, nicotinic acid, dextrin and tannic acid, of which acridine is the best. Polarisation studies with thiourea show that anodic polarisation is negligible, whereas cathodic polarisation is considerable, so that the corrosion process with this inhibitor appears to be essentially under cathodic control.
