Corrosion inhibition of aluminum in 2.0 M hydrochloric acid solution by the acetone extract of red onion skin

The inhibition efficiency of acetone extract of red onion skin on aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions has been evaluated by weight loss techniques. Values of inhibition efficiency obtained are dependent upon the concentration of inhibitor and temperature. Generally, inhibition was found to increase with inhibitor concentration, half-life, activation energy but decrease with temperature and first-order rate constant at the temperatures studied. Physical adsorption mechanism has been proposed for the inhibition and Langmuir adsorption isotherm was obeyed. The compound responsible for the inhibitory action of red onion skin is Quercetin. Red onion skin is an inhibitor of aluminium corrosion in 2 M hydrochloric acid solution. Key words: Corrosion inhibition, aluminium, weight loss, red onion skin, hydrochloric acid.

Corrosion inhibition of aluminum in hydrochloric acid solution by alkylimidazolium ionic liquids

The effects of newly synthesized three alkylimidazolium ionic liquids—1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides (BMIC), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides (HMIC) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides (OMIC)—on the corrosion of aluminum in 1.0 M HCl were investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and weight loss methods. All measurements showed that the inhibition efficiency increased with increase in the concentration of inhibitor and the effectiveness of these inhibitors was in the order of OMIC > HMIC > BMIC. Polarization curves revealed that the studied inhibitors were mixed type inhibitors. The adsorption of the inhibitors on the aluminum surface obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm and had a physical mechanism. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior in the presence of 5 × 10 −3 M of inhibitors was studied in the temperature range of 303–333 K. The associated activation energy of corrosion and other thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy of activation (Δ H), entropy of activation (Δ S), adsorption equilibrium constant ( K ads ) and free energy of adsorption (Δ G ads ) were calculated to elaborate the mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

Corrosion Inhibition of Aluminum in Hydrochloric Acid Solution Using Potassium Iodate Inhibitor

The inhibition effect of potassium iodate on the corrosion of aluminum in 2M HCl has been studied by weight loss, polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. It has been found that KIO3 acts as an excellent inhibitor. Inhibition efficiency with 100 ppm inhibitor was very high. Polarization curves reveal that the used inhibitor is a mixed type inhibitor. The surface adsorption of KIO3 leads to a decrease of double layer capacitance as well as an increase of polarization resistance. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the aluminum surface is in agreement with Temkin adsorption isotherm.

Eco‐friendly corrosion inhibitors: the inhibitive action of Delonix Regia extract for the corrosion of aluminium in acidic media

PurposeTo investigate the inhibitive effect of Delonix regia extracts to reduce the corrosion rate of aluminium in acidic media. The study was a trial to find a low cost and environmentally safe inhibitor to reduce the corrosion rate of aluminium.Design/methodology/approachThe inhibition efficiency was evaluated using the hydrogen evolution technique at 30°C. The mechanism of adsorption inhibition and type of adsorption isotherm was characterised from trends of inhibition efficiency and kinetic data.FindingsDelonix regia extracts inhibited the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing concentration of the inhibitor but decreased with increase in exposure time. The acid extracts (hydrochloric acid seeds extract (HSE) and hydrochloric acid leaf extract (HLE)) were found to be more effective than the ethanolic extracts (ethanol seeds extract (ASE) and ethanol leaves extract (ALE)) and the inhibition followed the order: HSE (93.6 per cent) > HLE (83.5 per cent) > ASE (63.9 per cent) > ALE (60.4 per cent). The low negative values of ΔGad: −20.14 kJ mol−1 for HSE, −18.08 kJ mol−1 for HLE, −15.96 kJ mol−1 for ASE and −15.12 kJ mol−1 for ALE, as calculated from the Langmuir isotherm, indicated that the inhibitor molecules adsorbed onto aluminium by a physiosorption‐based mechanism. A first‐order type of reaction mechanism was obtained from the kinetic treatment of the H2 gas evolution data.Research limitations/implicationsFurther investigations involving electrochemical studies such as polarization method should shed further light on the mechanistic aspects of the corrosion inhibition.Originality/valueThis paper provides new information on the possible application of Delonix regia as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor under the specified conditions. This environmentally friendly inhibitor could find possible applications in metal surface anodizing and surface coatings.

Magnetic field effects on inhibition of aluminium corrosion by cationic surfactant in acidic solution

The inhibiting effect of the cationic surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) on the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions in the presence and absence of external magnetic fields of up to 0·114 T has been investigated by weight loss measurements. It was found that strong magnetic fields affect the corrosion rate. The efficiency with which CTAC inhibits the corrosion of aluminium was increased in the presence of an external magnetic field. The extent of inhibition increased as the external magnetic field was increased. The magneto corrosion inhibition was explained in terms of the field assisted development of a passive layer.

The effect of some Schiff bases on the corrosion of aluminum in hydrochloric acid solution

The inhibition effect of Schiff bases benzylidene-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-amine (A), (2-methoxy-phenyl)-(4-methyl-benzylidene)-amine (B), (4-chloro-benzylidene)-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-amine (C) and (4-nitro-bezylidene)-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-amine (D) on the corrosion of aluminum in 1 M HCl has been studied by polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and weight loss measurements. It has been found that all the studied Schiff bases are excellent inhibitors. Maximum inhibition was obtained for 0.01 M Schiff base A. Results show that the inhibition efficiency increases with decreasing in temperature and increasing in concentration of Schiff base. Polarization curves reveal that the used inhibitors are mixed type inhibitors. The surface adsorption of the Schiff bases leads to a decrease of double layer capacitance as well as an increase of polarization resistance. The inhibitor performance depends strongly on the type of function groups substituted on benzene ring. The adsorption of used compounds on the aluminum surface obeys a Langmuir isotherm and has a physical mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters for both dissolution and adsorption processes were determined. The quantum chemical study of the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the Schiff bases on Al in molar HCl was carried out.

Studies on the inhibition of aluminum dissolution by hexamine–halide blends: Part I. Weight loss, open circuit potential and polarization measurements

Corrosion inhibition of aluminum in hydrochloric acid solution by hexamine–halide blends (HA–KI and HA–CaCl 2) was investigated using gravimetric method, open circuit potential and polarization measurements. Results showed that single additives HA and KI are moderate inhibitors, while CaCl 2 is poor inhibitor for corrosion inhibition of Al in 2 M HCl solution. In the presence of blends HA–KI and HA–CaCl 2, the corrosion resistance of aluminum is improved and the corrosion rate (CR) and corrosion current ( I c) are reduced significantly, so the inhibition efficiency (IE) and polarization resistance ( R p) are increased. With the mixed inhibitors, there is a compact adsorbed film formation on the surface of Al, due to a synergistic action between the halides ions and HA.

Mass loss and thermometric methods have been used to study the inhibition of aluminium corrosion in HCl solution by four Schiff bases: 2-anisalidine-pyridine; 2-anisalidine-pyrimidine; 2-salicylidine-pyridine; and 2-salicylidine-pyrimidine. Values of inhibition efficiency obtained from the two methods are in good agreement and are dependent upon the concentrations of inhibitor and acid.

The inhibitive effect of some quaternary ammonium salts towards corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution

The inhibitive action of some quaternary ammonium salts towards the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid was tested by thermometric, mass loss and polarization measurements. Parallelism between the different methods was established. It is suggested that the tested compounds act as cathodic inhibitors. The inhibitors appear to function through adsorption, following the Temkin adsorption isotherm. The values of free energy of adsorption have been calculated and discussed. The inhibitor character of the additives depends upon the concentration as well as the composition of the inhibitor. Within the given homolegous series the contribution of the functional group to adsorption increases with the length of the chain. The aim of this article is to throw some light on the mechanism of inhibition of these bulky molecules on the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid.

The effect of some ethoxylated fatty acids on corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions

The inhibitive effect of some ethoxylated fatty acids St(EO) 80, OL(EO) 20, OL(EO) 40 and OL(EO) 80 on the corrosion of two types of aluminium, Al(1) and Al(2), has been studied in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution by weight loss method. The effect of inhibitor concentration, temperature and time of immersion have been investigated. The inhibitive effect of these fatty acids is due to their adsorption on aluminium surfaces. The inhibitive efficiency depends on both the type and concentration of additives. Increasing the ethylene oxide units in the molecules and the presence of the double bond in oleate structure will enhance the inhibition efficiency. The activation energy and the thermodynamic parameters for the corrosion process in the absence and presence of the inhibitors were determined. By fitting the corrosion data, it is found that the results agree with Langmiur, Frumkin, Flory-Huggins isotherm and the kinetic thermodynamic model.

Technical Note:Role of Imidazolone Derivatives in Corrosion Inhibition of Pure Aluminum in Hydrochloric Acid Solution

The effect of some triazoline derivatives on Al corrosion in hydrochloric acid (HCl) was studied gasometrically and using the weight-loss and potentiodynamic methods. The three techniques were in agreement for the decrease of inhibition efficiency (%P) with increasing inhibitor concentration.

Inhibitory Effect of some carbazides on corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions

AbstractThe dissolution of aluminium in hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions in the presence of semicarbazide, thiosemicarbazide and sym.diphenylcarbazide as corrosion inhibitors has been studied using thermometric, weight‐loss and polarization methods. The three methods gave consistent results. The higher inhibition efficiency of these compounds in acidic than in alkaline madia may be due to the less negative potential of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution, favouring adsorption of the additive. The adsorption of these compounds were found to obey Frumkin adsorption isotherm.Cathodic polarization measurements showed that these compounds are cathodic inhibitors and their adsorption in the double layer does not change the mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction. The results are analysed in terms of both molecular and cationic adsorption.

Phenyl semicarbazide derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution

Measurements of the corrosion rate of aluminium in 2N HCl at 27°C with and without addition of phenyl semicarbazide derivatives (10−3−10−5 mol/l) were performed. The adsorption of these compounds was elucidated. Results show that phenyl semicarbazide derivatives are adsorbed on the aluminium surface according to the Frumkin isotherm. From the adsorption isotherm some thermodynamic data for the adsorption process (ΔG°ads. andf) are calculated and discussed.

Abstract The inhibition of the corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution by some 4-(m-Substituted phenylazo)pyrazoles has been studied by three different techniques. The inhibitor efficiency calculated from the three techniques are in good agreement. The corrosion rate is a function of temperature, concentration, and nature of the inhibitor. The inhibitors appear to function through general adsorption following the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters for adsorption of inhibitors have been calculated and discussed.

The effect of some B-diketo compounds on the retardation of aluminium dissolution in HCl

The inhibitive action of some B-diketo compounds on the dissolution of aluminium in 2M HCl has been investigated by hydrogen evolution, thermometric and weight loss techniques. The adsorbability of inhibitors is dependent on the basicity of the oxygen and nitrogen sites involved. The dissolution reaction of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solutions is zero order and remains so when B-diketo compounds are present. The rate constant decreases as the inhibition efficiency increases. The activation energy of the dissolution reaction increases with decreasing acid concentration and increasing inhibitor concentration. Values of the Arrhenius activation energies agree with those obtained for an activation controlled process.
