Intelligent prediction model of a polymer fracture grouting effect based on a genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation neural network

Polymer grouting can effectively improve the stability of surrounding rock fractures. However, in practical construction, it is difficult to judge the degree of coupling between the slurry and the rock, and the effective grouting range after grouting. Therefore, early prediction of the effect of grouting on the surrounding rock is crucial. In this paper, a new artificial intelligence method is proposed to predict the polymer fracture grouting effect. The genetic algorithm optimized back propagation neural network (GA-BP) is employed to construct an intelligent prediction model. To acquire a substantial dataset for constructing the model, an easily assembled/disassembled test apparatus for polymer fracture grouting is designed. The maximum coupling degree of the fractures and slurry diffusion distance are chosen as the evaluation metrics for the grouting effectiveness. The influences of the fracture characteristic parameters and grouting volume on the grouting effect are investigated. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on the spatiotemporal diffusion characteristics and slurry-rock coupling mechanism of polymer grouting. Compared to traditional BP neural networks, and three other machine learning algorithms (decision trees, random forests and gradient boosting decision trees), the GA-BP model outperforms them in terms of R2 (coefficient of determination), MSE (mean squared error), MBE (mean bias error), MAE (mean absolute error) and RMSE (root mean squared error) in both the test and training sets. The GA algorithm significantly improves the accuracy and robustness of the prediction model. The optimized model demonstrates significant accuracy in predicting grouting results and assessing efficiency, providing a practical reference for grouting construction.

Prediction modeling of cigarette ventilation rate based on genetic algorithm backpropagation (GABP) neural network

AbstractThe ventilation rate of cigarettes is an important indicator that affects the internal quality of cigarettes. When producing cigarettes, the unit may experience unstable ventilation rates, which can lead to a decrease in cigarette quality and pose certain risks to smokers. By establishing the ventilation rate prediction model, guide the design of unit parameters in advance, to achieve the goal of stabilizing unit ventilation rate, improve the stability of cigarette ventilation rate, and enhance the quality of cigarettes. This paper used multiple linear regression networks (MLR), backpropagation neural networks (BPNN), and genetic algorithm-optimized backpropagation (GABP) to construct a model for the prediction of cigarette ventilation rate. The model results indicated that the total ventilation rate was significantly positively correlated with weight (P < 0.01), circumference, hardness, filter air permeability, and open resistance. The results showed that the MLR models' (RMSE = 0.652, R2 = 0.841) and the BPNN models’ (RMSE = 0.640, R2 = 0.847) prediction ability were limited. Optimization by genetic algorithm, GABP models were generated and exhibited a little better prediction performance (RMSE = 0.606, R2 = 0.873). The results indicated that the GABP model has the highest accuracy in the prediction of predicting ventilation rate and can accurately predict cigarette ventilation rate. This method can provide theoretical guidance and technical support for the stability study of the ventilation rate of the unit, improve the design and manufacturing capabilities and product quality of short cigarette products, and help to improve the quality of cigarettes.

Short-term power grid load forecasting based on variable weight combination hybrid model

Abstract The power grid load exhibits non-linearity and volatility, posing challenges to power grid dispatching. To enhance the precision of power grid load forecasting, a variable weight combination forecasting model is suggested to address the issue of inadequate forecasting efficacy of individual algorithms. Considering the impact of various environmental factors on power grid load, a load influence feature dataset is formulated. Initially, support vector machines, genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation (BP) neural networks and radial basis neural networks are employed to forecast individual loads. Subsequently, a variance–covariance weight dynamic distribution method is utilized to merge the prediction results of the three individual algorithms, thereby establishing a short-term power grid load prediction model with variable weight combination. Taking a regional power grid as an example, the simulation results show that the prediction accuracy of the variable weight combination model is higher than that of the single algorithm. Taking the evaluation index MAPE as an example, compared with the three single algorithms, the prediction accuracy is improved by 42.31%, 48.56% and 65.33%. The practice proves that the proposed variable weight combination forecasting model greatly improves the accuracy of power network load forecasting.

Enhanced grip force estimation in robotic surgery: A sparrow search algorithm-optimized backpropagation neural network approach.

The absence of an effective gripping force feedback mechanism in minimally invasive surgical robot systems impedes physicians' ability to accurately perceive the force between surgical instruments and human tissues during surgery, thereby increasing surgical risks. To address the challenge of integrating force sensors on minimally invasive surgical tools in existing systems, a clamping force prediction method based on mechanical clamp blade motion parameters is proposed. The interrelation between clamping force, displacement, compression speed, and the contact area of the clamp blade indenter was analyzed through compression experiments conducted on isolated pig kidney tissue. Subsequently, a prediction model was developed using a backpropagation (BP) neural network optimized by the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA). This model enables real-time prediction of clamping force, facilitating more accurate estimation of forces between instruments and tissues during surgery. The results indicate that the SSA-optimized model outperforms traditional BP networks and genetic algorithm-optimized (GA) BP models in terms of both accuracy and convergence speed. This study not only provides technical support for enhancing surgical safety and efficiency, but also offers a novel research direction for the design of force feedback systems in minimally invasive surgical robots in the future.

Investigation on compressive strength of coral aggregate concrete: Hybrid machine learning models and experimental validation

The compressive strength of coral aggregate concrete (CAC-CS) holds importance in structural engineering and architectural design. Thus, this study establishes machine learning models for the prediction of CAC-CS and assesses their accuracy and generalization capability. The importance of input variables is analyzed by using Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) and single-variable fluctuations. A user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) for CAC-CS prediction is developed to facilitate practical use. The accuracy of the GUI is subsequently validated through experiments. Results demonstrate that the genetic algorithm-optimized backpropagation neural network (GA-BP) model provides predictions that are closely aligned with experimental values. The GA-BP model minimizes the mean and standard deviation of its residual distribution. The performance indicators, including correlation coefficient, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, mean square error, and root mean square error, of the GA-BP model are 0.98, 3.78, 10.95, 11.08, and 3.33, respectively, and are superior to those of the other tested models. The analysis of SHAP values and single-variable fluctuations reveals that among the factors influencing CAC-CS, water-binder ratio and curing age are the most sensitive. Reducing the water-binder ratio and increasing the curing age enhances CAC-CS. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis of mineral admixtures and the water-binder ratio in experiments aligns with the analysis of SHAP values and single-variable fluctuations. The error between the experimental values and GUI predictions for 14 mixture designs is less than 5 %, thus validating the accuracy and generalization capability of the GUI proposed in this study. In conclusion, this research provides practical guidelines for preparing CAC and contributes to the conservation and development of island resources.

Prediction of elastic properties of 3D4D rotary braided composites with voids using multi-scale finite element and surrogate models

The conventional evaluation of 3D braided composites' mechanical properties through numerical and experimental methodologies serves as a hindrance to material application owing to the considerable expenses, time constraints, and laborious efforts involved. Moreover, the presence of void defects induced during the processing exacerbates this challenge. In this study, a multi-scale finite element model (FEM) and a surrogate model are established for predicting elastic properties of three dimensional four directional (3D4D) rotary braided composites with voids for the first time. Based on the established FEM, a comprehensive dataset containing 768 data points is formed, covering the ranges of both design parameters and void defect parameters. The influence of braiding angle, yarn width, and porosity, on the elastic constants of 3D4D rotary braided composites is accurately analyzed. A genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation neural network (GABPNN) model is developed, which possess the capability to replicate FEM outcomes with a commendable R-value of 0.99. The remarkable concordance between the anticipated outcomes and experimental datasets corroborates the triumphant implementation of the present method in unraveling the interconnections between microstructure and properties in 3D4D rotary braided composites containing voids. Consequently, this offers a propitious instrument for expediting the intelligent conception and refinement of composite materials.

Machine learning-assisted correlations of heat/mass transfer and pressure drop of microchannel membrane-based desorber/absorber for compact absorption cycles

Microchannel membrane-based desorbers and absorbers are key components in efficient and compact absorption refrigeration systems. To improve the accuracy of current empirical correlations for describing the heat/mass transfer and solution pressure drop characteristics, more advanced correlation models are urgently needed. This study applies three machine learning algorithms, namely Random Forest (RF), Least-Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM), and Genetic Algorithm-optimized Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (GABPNN), to develop new models for Nusselt number (Nu), Sherwood number (Sh), and friction factor (Fr) of microchannel membrane-based desorber and absorber, respectively, based on experimental results. These machine learning-assisted models effectively improve the prediction accuracy for both the desorber and absorber. Among them, the Random Forest model performs best, improving the prediction accuracy by 12.37% (Nu), 21.49% (Sh), and 14.24% (Fr) for the desorber and 24.28% (Nu), 27.82% (Sh), and 30.47% (Fr) for the absorber, compared to the conventional empirical correlations. Moreover, in relative to the correlations obtained from the literature, the Random Forest model predicts the overall heat transfer coefficient (U), sorption rate (J), and solution pressure drop (DP) with accuracies higher by 44.75%, 64.66%, and 83.52% for the desorber, and 79.66%, 81.52%, and 69.53% for the absorber. This study is expected to facilitate the simulation, design, and optimization of microchannel membrane-based desorbers/absorbers towards more efficient and compact absorption cycles.

Improved artificial neural networks (ANNs) for predicting the gas separation performance of polyimides

This study aimed to establish a quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) model for predicting the gas separation performance of polyimide membranes using neural networks combined with the repeat unit structure of materials. Using a data bank based on 125 polyimides, we calculated a total of 20 descriptors for all polyimides using Yampolskii's group contribution method, which divides polyimides' repeat units into their smallest groups. The number of groups contained in each polyimide is taken as the network input, and the gas permeability as the network output. Two neural network models, back-propagation (BP) and genetic algorithm-optimized back-propagation (GABP) algorithms, were used as the prediction model, and the prediction results were compared. When compared with the previous models used to predict the gas separation performance for all polymers and other machine learning (ML) models, the prediction results obtained using the GABP model are encouraging, showing a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.44 for CO2, indicating that the model is applicable to polyimide. In addition, the GABP model is easy to operate, requires few parameters, it is also applicable to copolyimides. The GABP model based on the group contribution method can thus satisfactorily predict polyimides' gas separation. This is expected to be used to guide the synthesis and structure screening of polyimides for saving resources and commercialization.

Low cycle fatigue life prediction of titanium alloy using genetic algorithm-optimized BP artificial neural network

This paper proposes a novel approach for estimating titanium alloy structural parts’ low cycle fatigue (LCF) life based on the continuous damage mechanics (CDM) model. Using a genetic algorithm-optimized back-propagation artificial neural network (GABP-ANN), the LCF life of titanium alloy structural parts is accurately predicted. Firstly, experimental data and finite element simulation data are combined to constitute a fatigue life database, and the relative error is taken as the training target for the BP neural network. The relationship is established between the relative error and the initial parameters (such as hidden layer nodes and learning rate). Secondly, the GABP-ANN model improves the shortage of the BP model at randomly selected initial training parameters and further enhances the predictive performance. Then, the accuracy and stability of five titanium alloy structural parts under two machine learning (ML) models are analyzed. The experimental values, finite element model (FEM) simulated values, and predicted values of the two ML models are compared and analyzed. It is found that the GABP-ANN model has a significant advantage in predicting the fatigue life of titanium alloy structural parts. Finally, it is verified that the proposed ML models have better data learning ability. The above results indicate that the GABP-ANN technique provides a highly accurate and stable method for predicting the LCF life of titanium alloy structural parts.

Simulation of the Ozone Concentration in Three Regions of Xinjiang, China, Using a Genetic Algorithm-Optimized BP Neural Network Model

Accurate ozone concentration simulation can provide a health reference for people’s daily lives. Simulating ozone concentrations is a complex task because near-surface ozone production is determined by a combination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx emissions, atmospheric photochemical reactions, and meteorological factors. In this study, we applied a genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation (GA-BP) neural network, multiple linear regression (MLR), BP neural network, random forest (RF) algorithm, and long short-term memory network (LSTM) to model ozone concentrations in three regions of Xinjiang, China (Urumqi, Hotan, and Dushanzi districts) for the first time by inputting wind speed, humidity, visibility, temperature, and wind direction. The results showed that the average relative errors of the model simulations in the Urumqi, Hotan, and Dushanzi districts were BP (61%, 14%, and 16%), MLR (97%, 14%, and 23%), RF (39%, 11%, and 14%), LSTM (50%, 12%, and 16%), and GA-BP (16%, 4%, and 6%) and that the significance coefficients R2 were BP (0.73, 0.65, and 0.83), MLR (0.68, 0.62, and 0.74), RF (0.85, 0.80, and 0.88), LSTM (0.78, 0.74, and 0.85), and GA-BP (0.92, 0.93, and 0.94), respectively, with the simulated values of GA-BP being the closest to the true values. The GA-BP model results showed that among the 100 samples with the same wind speed, humidity, visibility, temperature, and wind direction data, the highest simulated ozone concentrations in the Urumqi, Hotan, and Dushanzi districts were 173.5 μg/m3, 114.3 μg/m3, and 228.4 μg/m3, respectively. The results provide a theoretical basis for the effective control of regional ozone pollution in urban areas (Urumqi), dusty areas (Hotan), and industrial areas (Dushanzi) in Xinjiang.

Analysis of the spectral and textural features of hyperspectral images for the nondestructive prediction of amylopectin and amylose contents of sorghum

The contents of amylopectin and amylose are important indicators to evaluate the quality of sorghum. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technology based on machine vision and spectroscopy that has been widely used in the quality evaluation of various foods. Three combined algorithms were used to extract the characteristic wavelengths. The gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was used to extract the textural features. Based on the spectra, textures, and fusion data, genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation neural network (BPNN-GA), cascade forest (CF), and partial least square regression (PLSR) models were established to predict the amylopectin and amylose contents. The BPNN-GA and CF models established using the characteristic wavelengths of visible-light were determined to be the best model, with RPD values of 8.2352 and 26.7308, respectively. These results demonstrated that HSI combined with machine learning algorithms could be used to enable the rapid and nondestructive prediction of amylopectin and amylose contents in sorghum.

Research on User Experience of Sports Smart Bracelet Based on Fuzzy Comprehensive Appraisal and SSA-BP Neural Network.

Due to the marked increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity worldwide and an environment leading to a series of chronic diseases, physical exercise is an important way to prevent chronic diseases. Additionally, a good exercise smart bracelet can bring convenience to physical exercise. Quick and accurate evaluation of smart sports bracelets has become a hot topic and draws attention from both academic researchers and public society. In the literature, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weight method (EWM) were used to obtain the weights from both subjective and objective perspectives, which were integrated by the comprehensive weighting method, and furthermore the performance of sports smart bracelet was evaluated through fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. Also, to avoid complex weight calculations caused by the comprehensive weighting method, machine learning methods are used to model the structure and contribute to the comprehensive evaluation process. However, few studies have investigated all previous elements in the comprehensive evaluation process. In this study, we consider all previous parts when evaluating smart sports bracelets. In particular, we use the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to optimize the backpropagation (BP) neural network for constructing the comprehensive score prediction model of the sports smart bracelet. Results show that the sparrow search algorithm-optimized backpropagation (SSA-BP) neural network model has good predictive ability and can quickly obtain evaluation results on the premise of effectively ensuring the accuracy of the evaluation results.

Designing an intelligent monitoring system for corn seeding by machine vision and Genetic Algorithm-optimized Back Propagation algorithm under precision positioning.

To realize the regulation of the position of corn seed planting in precision farming, an intelligent monitoring system is designed for corn seeding based on machine vision and the Genetic Algorithm-optimized Back Propagation (GABP) algorithm. Based on the research on precision positioning seeding technology, comprehensive application of sensors, Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers, and other technologies, combined with modern optimization algorithms, the online dynamic calibration controls of line spacing and plant spacing are implemented. Based on the machine vision and GABP algorithm, a test platform for the seeding effect detection system is designed to provide a reference for further precision seeding operations. GA can obtain better initial network weights and thresholds and find the optimal individual through selection, crossover, and mutation operations; that is, the optimal initial weight of the Back Propagation (BP) neural network. Field experiments verify the seeding performance of the precision corn planter and the accuracy of the seeding monitoring system. 1. The deviation between the average value of the six precision positioning seeding experiments of corn under the random disturbance signal and the ideal value of the distance is less than or equal to 0.5 cm; the deviation between the average value of the six precision positioning seeding experiments of corn under the sine wave disturbance signal (1 Hz) is less than or equal to 0.4 cm; the qualified rate of grain distance reaches 100%. 2. The precision control index, replay index, and missed index of the designed corn precision seeding intelligent control system have all reached the national standard. During the operation of the seeder, an alarm of the seeder leaking occurred, and the buzzer sounded and the screen displayed 100 times each; therefore, the reliability of the alarm system is 100%. The intelligent corn seeder designed based on precision positioning seeding technology can reduce the seeding rate of the seeder and ensure the stability of the seed spacing effectively. Based on the machine vision and GABP algorithm, the seeding effect detection system can provide a reference for the further realization of precision seeding operations.

Genetic Algorithm – Back Propagation (GA-BP) Neural Network for Chlorophyll-a Concentration Inversion Using Landsat 8 OLI Data

Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) accurate inversion in inland water is important for water environmental protection. In this study, we tested the Genetic Algorithm optimized Back Propagation (GA-BP) neural network model to precisely simulated the Chl-a in an inland lake using Landsat 8 OLI images. The result show that the R2 of GA-BP neural network model has increased 28.17% compared to traditional BP neural network model. Then this GA-BP model was applied to another two scenes of Landsat 8 OLI image with the R2 of 0.961, 0.954 respectively for March 26 2018, October 26 2018. And the spatial distribution have shown a reasonable result of Chl-a variation in Lake Donghu. This study can provide a new method for Chla concentration inversion in urban lakes and support water environment protection on a large scale.

Sound Quality Estimation of Electric Vehicles Based on GA-BP Artificial Neural Networks

The sound quality (SQ) and sound perception assessments of electric vehicles (EVs) clearly differ from those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Therefore, it is essential to describe and evaluate the SQ of EVs. To evaluate the SQ in EVs, it is necessary to organize evaluators for conducting subjective jury tests, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In addition, the evaluation results are subject to the evaluators themselves and other external interferences. With the advancement of machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANNs), this problem can be well solved. This paper outlines a model for SQ estimation in EVs based on a genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation artificial neural network (GA-BP ANN). Moreover, the correlation between the physical-psychoacoustical parameters and the subjective SQ estimations obtained from the jury tests was investigated in this study. It was found that the GA-BP ANN SQ model has many advantages in comparison with the multiple linear regression (MLR) model in terms of precision and generalization. In addition, this method is ready to be applied for rapidly evaluating the SQ in EVs without jury tests, and it can also be of high significance in dealing with the acoustical designs and improvements of EVs in the future.

Optimization design of lightweight structure inspired by glass sponges (Porifera, Hexacinellida) and its mechanical properties

The glass sponge is a porous lightweight structure in the deep sea. It has high toughness, high strength, and high stability. In this work, a super-depth-of-field microscope was employed to observe the microstructure of the glass sponge. Based on its morphological characteristics, two novel bio-inspired lightweight structures were proposed, and the finite-element analyses (FEA) of the structures were carried out under compression, torsion, and bending loads, respectively. The structure samples were fabricated using stereolithography 3D-printing technology, and the dimension sizes of the samples were equal to those of the corresponding FEA models. Mechanical tests were performed on an electronic universal testing machine, and the results were used to demonstrate the reliability of the FEA. Additionally, lightweight numbers (LWN) were proposed to evaluate the lightweight efficiency, and a honeycomb structure was selected as the reference structure. The results indicate that the lightweight numbers of the novel bio-inspired structures are higher than those of the honeycomb structure, respectively. Finally, the proposed structures were optimized by the response surface, BP (Back Propagation) and GA-BP (Genetic Algorithm optimized Back Propagation) method. The results show that the GA-BP model after training has a high accuracy. These results can provide significant guidance for the design of tube-shaped, thin-walled structures in the engineering.

GENDER CLASSIFICATION ON SKELETAL REMAINS: EFFICIENCY OF METAHEURISTIC ALGORITHM METHOD AND OPTIMIZED BACK PROPAGATION NEURAL NETWORK

In forensic anthropology, gender classification is one of the crucial steps involved in developing the biological profiles of skeleton remains. There are several different parts of skeleton remains and every part contains several features. However, not all features can contribute to gender classification in forensic anthropology. Besides that, another limitation that exists in previous researches is the absence of parameter optimization for the classifier. Thus, this paper proposed metaheuristic algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization, Ant Colony Algorithm and Harmony Search Algorithm based feature selection to identify the most significant features of skeleton remains. Once the set of significant features was obtained, the learning rate and momentum of Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) were optimized. This was to obtain a good combination of parameters in order to produce a better gender classification. This study used 1,538 data samples from Goldman Osteometric Dataset which consisted of femur, humerus and tibia parts. Based on the feature selection results, the Optimized BPNN outperformed other methods for all datasets. The Ant Colony Algorithm-Optimized Back Propagation Neural Network produced the highest accuracy for all parts of the skeleton where for femur was 89.44%, the humerus with 88.97% and tibia with 87.52% accuracy. Hence, it can be concluded that optimized parameter is capable of providing a better gender classification performance with the best set of features. Due to good gender classification techniques, the implication of this study is evident in the area of forensic anthropology where the process of developing a biological profile can be shortened which in turn enhances the productivity of anthropologists.

Application of simulated annealing genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation (BP) neural network in fault diagnosis

Optimal weights are usually obtained in neural network through a fixed network conformation, which affects the practicality of the network. Aiming at the shortage of conformation design and weight training algorithm in neural network application, the back propagation (BP) neural network learning algorithm combined with simulated annealing genetic algorithm (SAGA) is put forward. The multi-point genetic optimization of neural network topology and network weights is performed using hierarchical coding schemes and genetic operations. The simulated annealing mechanism is incorporated into the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to optimize the design and optimization of neural network conformation and network weights simultaneously. The SAGA takes advantage of GA excellent ability in grasping the overall ability of the search process, also uses the SA algorithm to control the convergence of the algorithm to avoid premature phenomenon. The fault diagnosis of one certain on-board electrical control box of helicopter and one certain flight control box of aircraft autopilot were used as a test platform to simulate the algorithm. The simulation conclusions reveal that the algorithm has good convergence rate and high diagnostic accurateness.
