Evaluating Organizational Level IT Innovation Adoption Factors among Global Firms

This study explores a range of organizational factors that drive success in organizational level information technology (IT) innovation adoption. A comprehensive model of organizational level IT innovation adoption is presented based on a context-mechanism-outcome perspective and by drawing on relevant theories. The proposed model is empirically tested using data from 1988 company executives across a wide range of organizations globally. A research model and the related hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. The study found that organizational level IT innovation readiness conceptualized through technology readiness and internal expertise is a key mediator for successful organizational level technology adoption. Other organizational factors such as top management support, organizational structure, and organization culture, were positively related to the overall level of IT innovation readiness and organizational level technology adoption. Considering that there are many organizational factors that influence the adoption of technology, future research should extend the research framework and include additional variables that could support IT innovation adoption outcomes. The study makes a significant contribution to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence related to the organizational factors necessary for a successful IT innovation adoption at an organizational level.

Context is key: The joint roles of transformational and shared leadership and management innovation in predicting employee IT innovation adoption

This study investigates how transformational leadership, through shared leadership, predicts followers’ information technology (IT) innovation adoption at work. We further examine how management innovation acts as an organizational-level enabler, enhancing the impact of leadership on followers’ IT innovation adoption. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a multi-source, multi-level field study of 5884 employees and 92 of their leaders in small- and medium-sized German companies. Data were analyzed by applying multi-level moderated-mediation analysis. The study findings revealed that shared leadership mediated the relationship between perceived transformational leadership and followers’ IT innovation adoption at the individual level. Moreover, organizational-level management innovation moderated the relationship between transformational leadership and IT innovation adoption, mediated by shared leadership. Taken together, our findings indicate that transformational leadership has the power to motivate followers to lead themselves toward implementing digital change. Our study contributes to shaping a multi-level organizational context that promotes IT innovation adoption at work.

Farmer Cards: Model, Database, Accuracy, and Improvement in Goverment Quality Service

This study aims to test the model adoption of farmer card innovation by farmers. Data were collected through the use of the survey technique. The respondents were obtained through cluster sampling from six districts that included the greatest numbers of farmer card users in central Java. Data analysis was done through the SEM technique. As a result, from the five variables included, reconstruction and merging of the independent variables were then carried out so that three important antecedent variables appeared regarding influencing the adoption of farmer cards, namely leadership, facility conditions, and the role of government mediated by perceptions of card technology. The application of farmer cards produced such a farmer database, accuracy improvement, and government service to farmers. Future research needs to be directed toward carrying out development research related to increasing the capacity of information technology regarding farmer cards; hence it will bring better welfare to farmers. No previous research has explained how small farmers adopt information technology provided by the government. Many events have transpired, but these dynamics have not been revealed in previous research. This research resulted in an adoption model that enriches the previous Rogers’ innovation adoption theory, especially how leadership factors play an important role in the adoption of information technology innovations

Analysis of User Resistance Towards Adopting E-Office: A Case from A Governmental Organization

The advancement in information technology is accelerating, affecting many industries. Government entities are one of the industries that have been affected. They adopt information technology (IT) to replace disorganized traditional business processes. This study observes that the IT innovation adoption in an organization will lead to some resistance. We bring a case of IT adoption to replace one part of a manual business process (letter management system) into a digitalized system called E-office in one of Indonesia’s governmental organizations. The adoption of IT causes some resistance within the organization, which motivates us to identify resistances before and during the adoption. We interview a team who oversees handling E-office implementation and discovered two types of resistances in technology adoption: delaying resistances and opposition resistances. Meanwhile, there are two types of behavioral resistances: reluctant compliance resistance and misguided application resistance. This research further provides details on the approaches used by the organization to mitigate resistances before and during the adoption of the E-office project's implementation.

Anger and fear: effects of negative emotions on hotel employees' information technology adoption

PurposeThe use of information technology (IT) in the hospitality industry is driven by the need to improve and refine customer service. However, it is unlikely that new IT will be successfully implemented if employees' roles and emotions are overlooked. The purpose of this study is to examine the interplay of negative emotions (anger and fear), coping strategies (venting anger and psychological distancing), perceptions of an IT innovation and intention toward adopting it.Design/methodology/approachA research model is developed based on the cognitive appraisal theory of emotion, coping theory and innovation diffusion theory. An online survey was conducted among employees working for hotels that had deployed a new reservation system, and 234 responses were collected.FindingsThe results indicate that employees' negative emotions (anger and fear) have negative and significant effects on their perceptions of adopting a new reservation system through coping strategies (i.e. venting anger and psychological distancing). Furthermore, employees' perceptions of adopting an innovative reservation system have a positive effect on their adoption intention toward the system.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first research to address the impact of distinct emotions on IT innovation adoption, as well as explaining the relation between affective and cognitive effects. The findings demonstrate the importance of examining negative emotions in IT innovation adoption. In addition, the model developed in this study confirms that an appraisal tendency approach better specifies the conditions under which different emotions are triggered to predict and explain how emotions relate to IT use through adaptation behaviors when compared with a valence-based approach.

Blockchain technology in supply chain management: an empirical study of the factors affecting user adoption/acceptance

Blockchain overcomes numerous complicated problems related to confidentiality, integrity, availability of fast and secure distributed systems. Using data from a cross-sectoral survey of 449 industries, we investigate factors that hinder or facilitate blockchain adoption in supply chains. To capture the most vital aspects of blockchain adoption in supply chains, our conceptual model integrates the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model with the task-technology fit (TTF) and information system success (ISS) models, with trust-based information technology innovation adoption constructs. Using structural equation modelling, we find that the ISS, TTF, and UTAUT models positively influence the key factors affecting supply chain employees’ willingness to adopt blockchain. Our results show that the UTAUT’s social influence factor has no significant effect on the intention to adopt blockchain, while inter-organisational trust has a significant effect on the relationship between the UTAUT dimension and intention to adopt blockchain.

Cloud computing technology adoption: an evaluation of key factors in local governments

PurposeThe significance of cloud services in information technology (IT) is increasing as a means of achieving enhanced productivity, efficiency and cost reduction. Through cloud-based service, the reliability and scalability of an organization’s systems can be enhanced since organizations such as local governments are able to concentrate on their main business strategies. This research seeks to identify critical factors that may have an impact on the acceptance of cloud-based services, where the organizational context is based on local governments in Australia.Design/methodology/approachTo formulate a more comprehensive IT innovation adoption model for cloud technology, factors from the technology-organizational-environment framework, desires framework and diffusion of innovation model were integrated. Data was obtained from 480 IT staff working in 47 local government organizations.FindingsThe research results show that the factors which had a statistically significant and positive impact on the adoption of cloud-based services in local governments were compatibility, complexity, cost, security concerns, expected benefits and organization size. It is likely that the outcomes from this research will provide insights to any organization seeking to make investment decisions on the adoption of cloud-based services.Research limitations/implicationsLimitations include generalizability of the findings since the data is restricted to local government areas in Queensland, Australia. Further, the sample mostly included individuals with managerial positions and may not completely capture the cloud adoption factors relevant for front line IT employees. Another limitation is the possible omission of factors that may be relevant but not considered due to the selected theories. Lastly, this research did not differentiate between different types of cloud adoption such as private, public, community and hybrid models that are possible in this context.Originality/valueThe paper provides a combination framework of cloud-based service adoption based on a literature review on cloud adoption from an IS perspective. It adapts integrated model to establish a more comprehensive innovation adoption framework for cloud technology.

How “smart cities” will change supply chain management

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of smart city initiatives and big data on supply chain management (SCM). More specifically, the connections between smart cities, big data and supply network characteristics (supply network structure and governance mechanisms) are investigated. Design/methodology/approach – An integrative framework is proposed, grounded on a literature review on smart cities, big data and supply networks. Then, the relationships between these constructs are analyzed, using the proposed integrative framework. Findings – Smart cities have different implications to network structure (complexity, density and centralization) and governance mechanisms (formal vs informal). Moreover, this work highlights and discusses the future research directions relating to smart cities and SCM. Research limitations/implications – The relationships between smart cities, big data and supply networks cannot be described simply by using a linear, cause-and-effect framework. Accordingly, an integrative framework that can be used in future empirical studies to analyze smart cities and big data implications on SCM has been proposed. Practical implications – Smart cities and big data alone have limited capacity of improving SCM processes, but combined they can support improvement initiatives. Nevertheless, smart cities and big data can also suppose some novel obstacles to effective SCM. Originality/value – Several studies have analyzed information technology innovation adoption in supply chains, but, to the best of our knowledge, no study has focused on smart cities.

Mindfulness and Quality of Innovation in Cloud Computing Adoption

The emergence of cloud computing is quickly redefining the information technology (IT) and business landscape. Cloud computing involves delivery of IT infrastructure, software and platforms as a service to the end users. This IT acquisition model saves organizations from huge capital expenditures on IT and the burden of keeping a huge IT department to provide system support. Cloud computing as an IT innovation is steadily generating a lot of interest within IT innovation researchers and practitioners. Extant research in IT innovation has heavily relied on the dominant paradigm which explains and predicts innovation adoption on the basis of economic-rationalistic models. These models assume a direct relationship between an organization’s innovator profile and the quantity of adoption in terms of earliness, frequency and extent of adoption. Further, they have always assumed a positive relationship between the quantity of innovation and quality of innovation. The advent of radical IT innovations like cloud computing calls for a rethinking of the dominant paradigm in terms of its efficacy in explaining innovative behaviors in organizations. Organizations hoping to adopt cloud computing are in need of a unifying IT innovation model that will help them discern whether, when and how to innovate. That is, they are concerned about the quality of innovation. This study proposes an IT innovation adoption model that incorporates the concept of mindfulness as a moderating factor between quantity of innovation and quality of innovation. The proposed conceptual model is a result of a thorough literature review of the IT innovation adoption research. This study, though conceptual, enriches cloud computing research by proposing an IT innovation model that suits its radical nature compared to other IT innovations. The proposed model once validated will also be of valuable use to practitioners and researchers interested in cloud adoption.

Analysing the diffusion and adoption of mobile IT across social worlds.

The diffusion and adoption of information technology innovations (e.g. mobile information technology) in healthcare organizations involves a dynamic process of change with multiple stakeholders with competing interests, varying commitments, and conflicting values. Nevertheless, the extant literature on mobile information technology diffusion and adoption has predominantly focused on organizations and individuals as the unit of analysis, with little emphasis on the environment in which healthcare organizations are embedded. We propose the social worlds approach as a promising theoretical lens for dealing with this limitation together with reports from a case study of a mobile information technology innovation in elderly home care in Denmark including both the sociopolitical and organizational levels in the analysis. Using the notions of social worlds, trajectories, and boundary objects enables us to show how mobile information technology innovation in Danish home care can facilitate negotiation and collaboration across different social worlds in one setting while becoming a source of tension and conflicts in others. The trajectory of mobile information technology adoption was shaped by influential stakeholders in the Danish home care sector. Boundary objects across multiple social worlds legitimized the adoption, but the use arrangement afforded by the new technology interfered with important aspects of home care practices, creating resistance among the healthcare personnel.

ESTABLISHING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INNOVATION CHARACTERISTICS AND IT INNOVATION ADOPTION IN ORGANISATIONS: A META-ANALYSIS APPROACH

This paper presents the findings of a meta-analysis of innovation characteristics that influence the adoption of information technology (IT) in organisations. Past studies that examine the determinants of IT innovation adoption have produced inconsistent and contradictory results and deducing a definitive set of attributes for innovation adoption has become impractical. The study has aggregated findings of past research on IT adoption using meta-analysis to identify key factors in terms of innovation or technology that influences adoption of IT in organisation. Six innovation characteristics most commonly examined by researchers have been analysed. The results of this meta-analysis confirm that relative advantage, compatibility, cost, observability and trialability are strong determinants of IT innovation adoption. However, the study found no association between complexity and IT innovation adoption. The effect of stage of innovation, type of innovation, type of organisation and size of organisation as four moderating conditions has also been examined.

IT innovation adoption by enterprises: Knowledge discovery through text analytics

Enterprise adoption of information technology (IT) innovations has been a topic of tremendous interest to both practitioners and researchers. The study of technological, managerial, strategic, and economic factors as well as adoption processes and contexts has led the field to become a rich tapestry of many theoretical and conceptual foundations. This paper provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary classification and analysis of the scholarly development of the enterprise-level IT innovation adoption literature by examining articles over the past three decades (1977–2008). We identify 472 articles and classify them by functional discipline, publication, research methodology, and IT type. The paper applies text analytic methods to this document repository to (1) identify salient adoption determinants and their relationships, (2) discover research trends and patterns across disciplines, and (3) suggest potential areas for future research in IT innovation adoption at the enterprise level.

The entrepreneur’s perception on information technology innovation adoption: An empirical analysis of the role of precipitating events on usage behavior

The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) is a fairly developed model. Like any model, however, it has limitations, mainly in its relationship between the intention and use behavior. This paper will attempt to explain the influence of external factors that potentially inhibit or facilitate the performance of a behavior, as well as effects of the propensity to act on determinants toward intention for action. Based on the UTAUT limitations, we added precipitating events to measure the effect of external factors (such as government policy, financial crisis, and new market) on IT innovation and adoption and examined the effect of the propensity to act as a moderator on the relationship between the determinants intention and usage behavior, and hypothesized that in the condition where propensity to act is high, taking action will be more predictable. The data used to test the hypotheses were collected from a varied spectrum of Malaysian industries and entrepreneurs (SMEs owners). A total of 1,000 businesses were identified and questionnaires were distributed in person by the authors, and 420 completed questionnaires were returned. The research model used structural equation modeling techniques, and the current study validated the UTAUT model in the entrepreneurship context while showing that performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence were all positive influences on behavior intention. Facilitating conditions and behavior intention are important variables for determining the origins of behavior for IT innovation. The results of the study confirmed the moderating effects of propensity to act and precipitating factors in the model. Results indicated that precipitating events can capture the influence of external factors on the behavioural intention to take action, improve the model, and fill the intention–behaviour gap. The current study shows the significant effect of life events on the behavioural intention to take action.

USING AN INNOVATION DIFFUSION THEORY FRAMEWORK TO EXPLORE WEB SITE ADOPTION BY SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED ENTERPRISES

Some research studies indicate that small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have had mixed success in the adoption of information technology innovations in the past as compared to larger organizations. However if SMEs can successfully adopt advanced Internet-based technologies then they may be able to overcome some of their inherent limitations and improve their ability to compete with larger organizations in today's global marketplace. SMEs differ widely in the degree to which they have adopted advanced Internet-based technologies. This study focuses on only one Internet-based technology that a SME may choose to adopt: a web site. A research framework is developed based upon Rogers' Innovation Diffusion Theory and is used to interpret the results of a case study of SME web site adoption. The study findings illustrate the utility of Rogers' Innovation Diffusion Theory for exploring this complex innovation adoption phenomenon. In addition, the study findings suggest that personal innovativeness may be an important factor to include in future studies. An analysis of the case study findings also suggest actions that change agents could take to increase the likelihood of successful web site adoption among SMEs.

The Effect of Perceived Novelty on the Adoption of Information Technology Innovations: A Risk/Reward Perspective

ABSTRACTA fundamental characteristic of any innovation is its novelty, the newness or freshness of the innovation in the eyes of the adopter. Past research has often considered novelty to be inherent to an information technology (IT) innovation, yet it is also likely that perceptions of novelty differ widely across individuals. Nevertheless, the role that the novelty of an IT innovation plays in adoption is not well understood. The primary goal of this research effort is to frame the perceived novelty of an IT innovation as a salient affective belief in the nomological network related to adoption. Further, we examine how perceived novelty influences the way individuals reconcile their perceptions of risk versus reward when considering the adoption of an IT innovation. Two empirical studies with 424 and 138 participants, respectively, examine the effect of perceived novelty on IT innovations from a risk/reward perspective. Results indicate that perceived novelty is a salient affective belief that plays a significant role in the adoption of IT innovations. Implications for both theory and organizational decision making are examined.

Organizational Slack and Information Technology Innovation Adoption in SMEs

This study explores the relevant dimensions of organizational slack in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and investigates their impact on adoption of different types of information technology (IT) innovations. Using recent data from a representative sample of 2,296 U.S. SMEs, we find that the slack-innovation relationships previously described in larger firms do not hold well for SMEs. Our results show potential slack (measured as access to external credit) to be a strong predictor of technology adoption in SMEs. By contrast, available slack appeared not to be a significant factor in SME innovation adoption. Moreover, the direction of the effects of potential slack was moderated by the capital-intensity of the innovation. In particular, e-commerce, which required lesser financial resources for SME adoption, was found to be pursued by those with lesser potential slack. We argue that, in some cases, innovation adoption may represent a form of “bricolage” by resource constrained SMEs.
